  • E-readers’ next chapter might not have happy ending | CES 2010 – CNET

LAS VEGAS–There were e-readers aplenty at the Consumer Electronics Show, but there’s substantial doubt if there are enough interested buyers to go around.

Amazon talks up the Kindle as its best-selling product, but even the market leader won’t say how many digital readers it has sold. Sony has long had its own readers and Barnes & Noble has jumped into the fray with the Nook. But it hasn’t stopped there.

Plenty of other would-be rivals showed up at CES, each hoping to make a name for themselves. But, that could be tough, analysts say.

  • Dodge announces upgraded lineup for 2010 including Nitro Detonator

2010 Dodge special edition models – Click above for high-res image gallery

A few weeks ago, everyone, including us, was wondering when The Chrysler Group was going to have anything new to show us at next week’s Detroit Auto Show. You can look at the latest news about potential Ram models, Chrysler’s special editions and Dodge‘s just-unveiled offerings either as wheezing gasps, or signs of pointing in the right direction. Since it’s a new year, we’re going to give Chrysler (and Fiat) the benefit of the doubt… for now.

Dodge says it “has taken ‘base model’ out of its vocabulary” by moving heaps of kit from the Options column to the Standard column on cars like the Journey, which for 2010 will automatically receive 17-inch aluminum wheels, cruise control, sunscreen glass, body-color mirrors, floor mats and passenger grab handles. It has also added “Heat,” “Hero,” “Crew,” and “Uptown” packages to the Journey’s options list for those who like trim names that sound like they came from an SNL skit.

To match its Chrysler 300 siblings, the Dodge Caliber gets a restyled interior “executed with premium materials and detailed craftsmanship” alongside its new instrument panel. Not left out of the marketing brainstorm, the Caliber wears a number of new trim monikers as well, including “Express,” “Mainstreet,” “Heat,” “Uptown” and “Rush.”

Four of Dodge’s other models – the Nitro, Avenger, Challenger, and Viper SRT10 – get their loving spoonfuls as well. You can read all about them in the Pasternak-length press release after the jump, and check out the Nitro Detonator and Viper ACR in the high-res gallery of photos below.

  • Consumer Credit Plunges Record 8.5% In November

    fedjan8th

Consumers have been hoarding cash and doing little spending. Finally, that tactic has paid off, as Americans have reduced their overall combined debt by 8.5% or $17.49 billion.

Analysts had only been looking for a drop of $5 billion.

    It’s the largest drop ever.

Marketwatch: This is the record tenth straight monthly drop in consumer credit. Consumers have retrenched since the financial crisis hit in full force in September 2008. Credit has fallen in every month except January 2009. Economists surveyed by MarketWatch expected consumer credit to decline by $3.9 billion. In the subcategories, credit-card debt fell $13.7 billion, or 18.5%, to $874.0 billion. This is the record 14th straight monthly drop in credit card debt. Non-revolving credit, such as auto loans, personal loans and student loans fell $3.8 billion or 2.9% to $1.59 trillion.

  • America’s Youth Realize That Working Just Doesn’t Make Sense Anymore

Research from the Atlanta Federal Reserve shows how the proportion of young people ages 16 to 24 in the work force has collapsed.

If this was simply a phenomenon of the recent crisis, then perhaps it wouldn't be too surprising given the paucity of jobs these days. But there's more to it: Ever since 2000, fewer and fewer young people have been working.

See for yourself; even between recessions the green line below has been falling:

    chart614

Federal Reserve of Atlanta: Moreover, the most recent recession has seen youth participation rates decline at a rate similar to that seen in the early 2000s. In contrast, the labor force participation by individuals over 24 years of age has varied much less, implying that the decline in youth labor force participation has been a major contributor to the reduction in the overall rate of labor force participation (see the above chart).

It also appears that the decline in youth participation is most dramatic among teenagers, and for that group it is an equally sized decline for both males and females (see the next two charts).

So, first of all, as stated above, the decline in labor participation from America's young accounts for the majority of the decline in overall labor market participation. So it's not that older workers are dropping out of the rat race, it's that the younger people are.

The Economist's Free Exchange thinks this could be partly a good thing -- falling labor market participation is a function of more young people focusing on education. Maybe, but at the same time it might just be that, for some reason, they find less reason to work, or have less "fire in the belly."

Free Exchange: That makes the decline seem a little less troubling. At least those not able to find work in the labour market are actively investing in human capital. But this also suggests that young people are developing far less work experience in early adulthood than did previous generations—a factor which could make it more difficult for them to find work when they finally leave school, and which may influence things like levels of student indebtedness in the meantime.

  • Artie Lange Released From Hospital

Howard Stern sidekick Artie Lange has been released from the Jersey City hospital where he has been recovering from a suicide attempt last weekend. The troubled comedian stabbed himself nine times in his Hoboken, NJ, apartment before his mother discovered his bloodied body and called 911 early last Saturday.

“Mr. Lange was found by his mother at 9:36 a.m. on Saturday,” Hoboken Police Det. Lt. Mark Dompetello told E! News today. “She called 911 when she found him in a pool of blood. He was semiconscious [and] then became unconscious. Our medics came. Apparently he had nine self-inflicted knife wounds, and it was ruled to be an apparent attempted suicide. There’s no active criminal investigation.”

The tragic comedian has battled depression, weight problems, and drug and alcohol addiction for the better part of his life. This suicide attempt by Artie was not his first. In his book, Too Fat To Fish, the Stern colleague details attempting suicide back in 1995 by overdosing on thirty pills of Resterol (a sleep aid), Excedrin PM, and a pint of whiskey.

Hopefully, this time Artie will get the help he needs.

  • Palo Alto will be prototype for revised Apple Store design

Apple is planning to build a new Palo Alto store to serve as a “prototype” for future Apple Stores, featuring a completely transparent front and an indoor atrium “feel.” The revised, more open design will serve as a “commons for [Apple’s] community to gather,” according to documents filed with the City of Palo Alto’s Architectural Review Board.

Though Apple is not named in the filing, uncovered by Silicon Valley Mercury News, the architect for the project is Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, who also designed the 5th Avenue Apple Store in New York. That store is well known for its large glass cube entryway for the underground retail area, open 24/7. Palo Alto planning manager Amy French told the Mercury News that it is her understanding that the location will be a new Apple Store.

“Apple is pretty secretive about that kind of stuff,” ARB chair Alexander Lew told the Mercury News. “But at the same time, when you look at it, the design is pretty unique—I think a lot of people have kind of guessed [that it’s an Apple Store],” he said.

The filing notes that the project will replace the façade of the current unoccupied retail structure at 340 University Avenue with a glass front that will make the street “part of the store’s interior” so that “the energy of the store is shared directly with the street and the larger community.”

In addition to the open glass façade in front, the roof will be modified to include large, open skylights. The natural light coming in will help three large trees, planted near the rear of the store, to grow inside. These features, along with materials choices and other energy efficiency design cues, will qualify the remodeled building for LEED certification.

The renovated location will occupy 10,700 square feet. The existing Palo Alto Apple Store, located just a block away, is about 6,500 square feet. The added space will include plenty of room to offer training for businesses and individual consumers.

The ARB recommended that the city approve Apple’s proposed renovations in a unanimous vote.

Prosecutors in Los Angeles will seek an involuntary manslaughter indictment against the doctor suspected of giving Michael Jackson a lethal dose of a sedative, The Associated Press reported Friday.

A law enforcement source told The AP that Houston physican, Dr. Conrad Murray, will be prosecuted on a theory of gross negligence.

Dr. Murray, who had been hired to help the King of Pop prepare for a marathon London concert series, was at the 50-year-old singer’s rented mansion when paramedics arrived on June 25, finding him unconscious. Suspicion has swirled around the doctor, who had offices in Las Vegas and Houston, ever since. Investigators have searched his home, offices and a storage locker he used.

  • Yet Another App Store. This Time, It’s Intel

    appstore-h1-text

Intel CEO Paul Otellini at CES announced an app store for applications on netbooks. The store is called AppUp Center, and it’s a place where users can purchase programs that cater to a netbooks’ unique screen size and mobility. Intel AppUp center launched today for Windows and will support Moblin-based open source operating systems and a number of runtime environments later this year.

The first set of apps are now available for download, for free or to purchase, and more will be added as they are validated. App categories include entertainment, business, games, education, health and social media. Additionally, Acer, ASUS, Dell and Samsung have announced plans to collaborate with Intel on their own app stores.

According to Intel, by participating in the program, developers gain access to the fast-growing, consumer-centric computing netbook category. In addition, developers gain revenue opportunities from the netbook-installed base, and potentially hundreds of millions of other Intel processor-based computers and devices — should Intel and partner storefronts expand into new market segments.

Intel is also working with partners to bring the app stores to consumers. The partner stores give access to the developer and store services the Intel AppUp center offers. The services include validating and categorizing apps and utilizing a common transaction infrastructure to administer purchases and downloads for these tailored stores.

  • Memorex shows off some Wii stuff, and a seriously nice pocket cam

IMG_0513We had a chance to meet with Memorex this morning, and spotted a few cool items for you. Specifically, a charging device for you iProduct, some Wii accessories, and a pretty interesting mini-camcorder with a touch screen.

XtremeMac showed us a combination wall charger and li-ion battery pack. It’s got dual USB ports on the bottom, and has a 1 amp outbput to charge your devices quickly, and a fold out arm which turns it into a viewing stand. MSRP is $79.99, which seems a little steep for a fancy battery pack. Maybe we’ll see it a little cheaper when it actually comes out in 2Q2010.

For the Wii, Memorex has a new racing wheel that ensures that you have access to all your buttons (including the trigger underneath), and supports the MotionPlus. The best part is the price, it comes individually for $9.99, or as a family three pack for $24.99.

The most interesting thing we saw was a new mini-camcorder. It’s got a few features to set it out from the pack; it shoots in full 1080p, the entire back of it is a touch screen, and it will reportedly support an external microphone and there are even rumors of a wireless setup, making this a potentially great camera for video blogging. The new camera should be available this fall, with an MSRP of $169.

We also saw some new iPhone/iPod docks, which are necessarily a new thing, but they are a little different. The design is definitely sleek, and what made me notice them is that the iPhone or iPod is actually protected when it’s docked. We don’t have a lot of information about these products yet, but we’ll let you know the details when we find out more.

  • DeLorme’s PN-60w GPS Communicator Uses Satellite to Connect to SMS, Facebook, Twitter [GPS]

If you’re out in the middle of the Yukon wilderness and really have to send a tweet about the moose you just killed and ate with your bare hands, Delorme’s PN-60w GPS is just the device you need.

Leveraging the SPOT satellite communicator/ messenger service to connect to internet services such as Twitter and Facebook, not to mention as SMS, you can maintain communications with the mainstream world even when you’re literally in the middle of nowhere (and no cell towers are to be seen). Going beyond a list of pre-written form messages, you can type custom message of your own to update the masses on your activities and whereabouts. The only problem? There’s no keypad, keyboard or touchscreen on the thing.

There’s also standard GPS features like mapping, a compass, emergency assistance and geocaching. As for availability, the PN-60w will be available in the spring for $450 on its own and $550 bundled with the SPOT communicator. In short, this thing is good if you’re a man of the wild, not so good if you spend most your time hunting for machiattos. [Delorme]

  • Even Brooke Shields is upset with AT&T

    23321_605

Phonescoop grabbed a quick interview with Ms. Blue Lagoon herself, Brooke Shields at the LG booth. While she recited the regular marketing claptrap she had a little bit to say about AT&T and the iPhone:

PS: Why did you get an iPhone?

Brooke: First I got it because it was cool. I felt comfortable with the touch screen. The email was great. Texting was great. I was so happy that I could film my kids and take pictures of them and share them with my husband, The phone was a big problem, though. My time is limited, and when I have a few moments to call my kids, I don’t want the call to drop. That’s what happened with the iPhone.

If Ms. Shields is against you, AT&T, who can be for you?

Congrats to Phonescoop’s Eric Zeman, above, for being allowed to go near women again.

  • Hands-on with Kodak’s Playsport and Slice Cameras

    scaled.IMG_0460
Kodak showed us their clever little Slice and Playsport cameras. The Slice is a touchscreen point and shoot and the SportPlay is a completely waterproof mini-camcorder. Both aren’t quite ready and will be available in the Spring of this year but both are pretty cool.

The Slice has a large rear screen with touch controls. You slide through photos with your fingers and then tap little icons to set sharing. Dave wrote up the main specs:

The cutely named Slice is a seemingly typical P&S camera, albeit with a 14MP sensor and the previously mentioned touchscreen interface. It’ll shoot 720p 30 FPS video, features image stabilization and a lithium ion battery, just like the other cameras in this market segment. Kodak really isn’t doing anything new with the Slice, however I will have to admit I do like the look of the little guy. The price may be a bit of a problem though, it’s going to MSRP for $350 which might be a bit steep for the casual purchaser. Expect to see the Kodak Slice at your favorite electronics retailer sometime in April 2010.

    Video after the jump.

The Playsport shoots at 1080p and has an HDMI out along with an SD card slot for expansion. It is rubberized and the slots are kept safe and dry with little flaps. It will cost $140 Both will be available in April.
