  • Elizabeth Hanson Colby, Elizabeth Hanson Colby College

Ms. Hanson’s report, “Faithless Heathens: Scriptural Economics of Judaism, Christianity and Islam,” carried a title far more provocative than its contents, said the professor who advised her. But it may have given a hint of her career to come, as an officer for the Central Intelligence Agency specializing in hunting down Islamic extremists.

That career was cut short last week: Ms. Hanson was one of seven Americans killed in a suicide bombing at a C.I.A. base in the remote mountains of Afghanistan.
The victims there included the unidentified chief of the post at FOB Chapman, a mother of three young children, as well as two contract employees of Xe (formerly known as Blackwater), and four CIA employees whose families have released their names: Harold E. Brown Jr. of Massachusetts, 37; Scott Michael Roberson of Ohio, 39, a former U.S. Navy Seal; and Jeremy Wise of Arkansas, 35. Brown left behind his college-sweetheart wife and three children. Roberson was a security officer new to the agency, whose wife is due to give birth to their first child next month. Wise, who is survived by a wife and young son, was memorialized in a Facebook posting.

Another slain CIA officer was Elizabeth Hanson, 31, an Illinois native and a 2001 graduate of Colby College. A family friend posted notice of her death to friends on Facebook, describing Hanson as “effervescent” and “vibrant.”

I first saw the somber CIA Memorial Wall and book at the side of Henry “Hank” Crumpton, a legendary former CIA officer. Hank’s almost-mythic reputation has been chronicled in bits and pieces – though usually pseudonymously. He was simply called “Henry” by the 9/11 Commission Report and in Bob Woodward’s “Bush at War,” and “Hank” in others. His full name is Henry A. Crumpton, a wiry Georgian who spent the greatest part of his adult life hidden in the covert world of espionage and counterterrorism in Africa and South Asia.

  • New Core i7, i5, and i3 Processor Family: Did We Mention They’re Fast [Intel]

You’re going to be seeing Intel’s latest iteration of high-powered processors popping up all over the place soon—specifically, more than 400 PC platform designs and 200 embedded devices. Time to meet your next computer’s guts:

Intel is announcing 27 new Core processors in total, covering the mobile, desktop, and embedded chips developed with Intel’s new 32nm manufacturing process. The flagships have already been benchmarked and so far seem to deliver on the promise of being about twice as fast as comparable PCs currently available. The Core i5-670 desktop processor has been clocked at 3.46GHz, while the mobile Core i7-620M has a listed speed of 2.66GHz. With Intel’s Turbo Frequency mode, they can achieve speeds of up to 3.73HGz and 3.33Ghz, respectively

The energy reductions are described as “significant,” but there’s no real metric to judge it by.

All of the current chips are either currently available or will be in the next two weeks. There’s no word yet on when we might see new 32nm quad core processors, although we’re told it’s going to be in the near future.

Intel’s also rebranded Centrino to cover its wireless products, and today announced three new Intel Centrino Wireless adaptors with dual-band Wi-Fi support and 802.11n multistream capabilities.

Honestly, there’s not a ton of new information being announced this morning, which makes sense with Intel Big Boss Paul Otellini delivering a keynote this afternoon. We’ll be on hand for that as well, looking out for any bombshells. The entire spec rundown can be found here. Full release ahoy!

Intel Unveils All New 2010 Intel® Core™ Processor Family
Industry’s Smartest, Most Advanced Technology Available in Variety of Price Points

INTERNATIONAL CONSUMER ELECTRONICS SHOW, Las Vegas, Jan. 7, 2010 – Intel Corporation introduced its all new 2010 Intel® Core™ family of processors today, delivering unprecedented integration and smart performance, including Intel® Turbo Boost Technology1 for laptops, desktops and embedded devices.

The introduction of new Intel® Core™ i7, i5 and i3 chips coincides with the arrival of Intel’s groundbreaking new 32 nanometer (nm) manufacturing process – which for the first time in the company’s history – will be used to immediately produce and deliver processors and features at a variety of price points, and integrate high-definition graphics inside the processor. This unprecedented ramp and innovation reflects Intel’s $7 billion investment announced early last year in the midst of a major global economic recession.

Intel is unveiling several platform products, including more than 25 processors, wireless adapters and chipsets, including new Intel Core i7, i5 and i3 processors, Intel® 5 Series Chipsets, and Intel® Centrino® Wi-Fi and WiMAX adapters that include new Intel® My WiFi features (see charts below). More than 400 laptop and desktop PC platform designs are expected from computer makers based on these products, with another 200 expected for embedded devices.

New 2010 Intel Core processors are manufactured on the company’s 32nm process, which includes Intel’s second-generation high-k metal gate transistors. This technique, along with other advances, helps increase a computer’s speed while decreasing energy consumption.

“For the first time, there’s a new family of Intel processors with the industry’s most advanced technology available immediately at virtually every PC price point,” said Sean Maloney, executive vice president and general manager of the Intel Architecture Group. “These smart processors adapt to an individual’s needs, automatically providing a ‘boost’ of performance for everyday applications. They become energy efficient to the point of shutting down processing cores or reducing power consumption to provide performance when people need it, and energy efficient when they don’t.”

    Speed Meets Intelligence
Based on Intel’s award-winning “Nehalem” microarchitecture, these new desktop, mobile and embedded processors deliver smart performance for music, gaming, videos, movies, photos, social networking and other demanding mainstream applications. In addition, ultra-thin laptops with all new 2010 Intel Core processors inside provide a balance of performance, style and long battery life for sleek systems less than an inch thick.

New Intel Core i7 and Core i5 processors also feature exclusive Intel Turbo Boost Technology1 for adaptive performance, and thus smarter computing. Intel Turbo Boost Technology1 automatically accelerates performance, adjusting to the workload to give users an immediate performance boost when needed. Intel® Hyper-Threading Technology2, available in Intel Core i7, Core i5 and Core i3 processors, enables smart multi-tasking by allowing each processing core to run multiple “threads,” providing amazing responsiveness and great performance, balanced with industry-leading energy efficiency when processing several tasks simultaneously.

Supporting the all new 2010 Intel Core™ processors, the Intel 5 Series Chipset is the company’s first single-chip chipset solution, evolving from simply connecting components to providing a range of platform innovation and capabilities. The Intel Core family also has power-saving techniques like one Intel calls “hurry up and get idle” or “HUGI,” which enable processors to finish tasks quickly, while preserving battery life.

The all new 2010 Intel® Core™ processor family is the first to integrate graphics into mainstream PC processors. With Intel® HD Graphics, the processors deliver stunning visuals and smooth high-definition (HD) video playback. It’s also the industry’s first integrated solution to deliver multi-channel Dolby* TrueHD and DTS* Premium Suite home theater audio. In addition, Intel HD Graphics support mainstream and casual 3-D gaming without the need for an add-in video card, and offer full support for the new Microsoft Windows* 7 operating system.

Another intuitive feature available to mainstream notebook buyers includes Intel Switchable Graphics, which allows users who play very graphics-intense games to automatically switch between Intel’s integrated graphics to a discrete version on the fly, without having to re-boot, for optimal battery life and performance.

Beyond Laptops and Desktops – Embedded Processors
The new 2010 Intel® Core™ embedded processors target devices that leverage PC-like operations in the smarter connected world, including ticket kiosks and self check-out machines, ATMs, digital signs, medical equipment, communications gear and industrial machines. For example, system owners at a bank or retail store can better manage their ATMs, kiosks or a smart register using these processor platforms. These embedded devices can optimize workloads, conserve power consumption, remotely manage their connected network, and even gather metrics based on video analytics for more effective advertising campaigns.

Intel also expanded the performance-per-watt platform choices for embedded by adding error correcting code memory for applications that require a higher data integrity standard. The embedded processors, together with Intel 5 Series chipsets, offer an extended, seven-year life cycle that better matches how long these devices are in the marketplace.

    Wireless Products, WiMAX and More
The Intel Centrino® brand now represents Intel’s wireless products, targeting a broader range of users than ever before. Three new Intel® Centrino® Wireless adapters feature advanced 802.11n multi-stream capabilities and dual-band support for WiFi, offering users up to 8 times greater speed3, consistent coverage and reliable connectivity while consuming minimal power.

Intel offers a complete line of high-quality adapters and its integrated WiMAX/WiFi adapter supports 2.3, 2.5 and 3.5GHz WiMAX bands delivering up to 20Mbps on the go.

All the adapters support Intel® My WiFi® Technology, which allows users to turn their laptop into a virtual hotspot and directly connect wireless devices to their laptop. Remote WiFi client management with Intel Embedded IT and Intel® Active Management Technology 6.0 also helps enable remote client management for the enterprise.

In addition, entry-level workstations now available based on Intel Core i5 with Intel HD graphics or an Intel® Xeon® 3400 series processors and the Intel® 3450 Chipset give users access to a workstation platform built around the efficiency, power and reliability demanded of a professional workstation. Intel will also offer the new 2010 Intel Core processor family on Intel® vPro™ Technology later in the quarter to help IT managers and corporations take advantage of hardware-assisted security and manageability capabilities.

  • Mariah Carey Acceptance Speech 2010

Nice Mariah Carey may be, but her chances at the Oscars seem to be pretty nil at this point. The Academy, after all, is full of divas, and critics’ groups have mostly ignored her. The one running away with every best supporting actress award out there is Mo’Nique, who also seems to be very nice even though she plays a diva from hell in Precious.

Addendum: Some have said that Carey’s speech at the People’s Choice Awards was weird and incoherent. She sounded perfectly coherent while talking to reporters backstage.
Mariah opted for a white halter-style gown with blinged-out earrings while Nick went for the classic look in a black tuxedo complete with a black bowtie.

The night got even more exciting when Ms. Carey was announced as the Best R&B Artist and graciously accepted her trophy onstage.
Newly engaged Carrie Underwood had plenty to smile about, too. The singer, who picked up three awards last year, was named favorite country artist.

Other major winners included Lady Gaga (favorite pop artist), Johnny Depp (favorite movie actor) and Miley Cyrus (breakout movie actress). Woo hoo!

  • Google Revenues Could Get Rare New Business Boost By Nexus One (GOOG)

    Nexus One Customer Rep

Google (GOOG) has a problem most businesses would love to have: Its ~$22 billion search advertising sales are so huge, that it’s hard for the company to come up with new lines of business that produce enough revenue to move the needle.

So, when Goldman Sachs analyst James Mitchell says HTC’s new Google-issued phone, the Nexus One, could increase Google’s annual revenues by 9%, it’s time to snap to attention — even if James only thinks the phone will increase Google profits 0% to 2%.

Here’s James in a note today:

We look into unit volumes and costs at HTC, the Nexus One manufacturer, with Robert Chen, our colleague who covers HTC stock. We conclude that 3.5 mn Nexus One sales could boost Google’s 2010 revenue by about 9%, reduce its operating margin by 200 bps, and increase its EBIT by 0%-2%.

VOLUME: We estimate Google may sell 3.5 mn Nexus Ones in 2010, based on first-year sales for other HTC Android models of 1.5-4.0 mn; we adjust up for Google’s brand and down for limited availability in retail outlets.

REVENUE: 3.5 mn units at $530 per unit add $1.9 bn, or 9%, to Google’s 2010 net revenue. Google will book the full unit sales price (including carrier subsidy on locked phones) to its “licensing and other” line item.

MARGIN: We estimate HTC’s component cost at $300 per unit, boosted by the OLED screen and CPU. We assume HTC bears warranty, after-sale service, & R&D expenses of $50, and retains a $75 profit. We estimate Google’s R&D & marketing expenses at $50 or more, for a margin to Google of up to $55 per unit, or up to 10%, and a boost to Google’s EBIT of up to $190 mn, or 0%-2%.

    Implications

Though the Nexus One should reduce Google’s margins, we assume few investors will penalize Google’s stock given: (1) We still expect Nexus One to be neutral-to-positive for Google’s absolute earnings. (2) We believe the real value of Nexus One lies in it helping accelerate mobile search activity on Google Android smartphones, as opposed to devices such as the iPhone, where Google pays traffic acquisition costs to Apple.

    Valuation

Our 6-month target price of $670 is based on DCF and P/E to normalized growth, and equates to 24X our 2010E EPS of $28.38.

    Key risks

Tougher competition in search once Microsoft’s alliance with Yahoo! receives regulatory approval; Apple retaliating in handsets.

  • Motorola’s Backflip Could Be Lost in Nexus One Buzz

Despite the buzz around Google’s Nexus One smartphone, other Android device makers are working to rise above the noise at this week’s Consumer Electronics Show. Motorola’s latest Android smartphone is the Backflip, but analysts aren’t too sure the market will do cartwheels over the device, especially in the wake of Google’s big announcement.

The Backflip promises social savviness and multitasking capabilities with a unique reverse flip design that aims to make it easier for consumers to watch videos, look at pictures, and listen to music. The device offers a QWERTY keyboard and a high-resolution 3.1-inch screen.

“Since introducing our first MOTOBLUR-based device, we’ve remained focused on differentiating the Android experience and bringing it to new carrier partners around the globe,” said Sanjay Jha, co-CEO of Motorola and CEO of Motorola Mobile Devices. “Backflip maximizes the multitasking and multifunctional potential of MOTOBLUR with its unique design elements, making it as smart as it is social.”

    Motorola’s Reverse Design

The phone is called the Backflip because it reverses the traditional design by flipping in the opposite direction. When the device is in reverse-flip, tabletop mode, users can listen to music or watch videos hands-free. And a trademarked feature called Backtrack, a touch panel located on the other side of the device, lets users scroll through the Web, texts, e-mails and news feeds without obscuring the home-page view.

Backflip offers a full HTML browser with a touch display, 3G speed, and Wi-Fi access. The device boasts a five-megapixel camera with flash and the ability to upload photos to social-networking sites. Users can also tap into the Android Market and its more than 18,000 apps and widgets that allow smartphone customization.

The Backflip will be available in North America, Latin America, Europe and Asia in the first quarter. But will it and other yet-to-be-announced Android smartphones be overshadowed by the…

It’s always tough for a plain-old point-and-shoot camera to stand-out at CES, so Olympus has wisely gone and played the tried-and-true move of dumping a whole slew of them at once to avoid getting lost in the shuffle . Leading those off are four new 14-megapixel FE Series cameras — the FE-5030, FE-4040, FE-4030, and FE-47 — which all pack either a 4x or 5x optical zoom, a 2.7-inch LCD, digital image stabilization (and added mechanical stabilization in the FE-4040), and a double-layered Crystal Shell finish in your choice of a range of colors. Those are complemented by the µ-5010, µ-7030, µ-7040, and µ-9010, which all pack the same 14 megapixels but expand your optical zoom options to 5x, 7x and 10x — plus some HD video recording on the µ-7030. Rounding things out all by its lonesome is the 12-megapixel µ Tough 3000, which packs a 3.6x wide angle zoom, a 2.7-inch LCD and, most importantly to live up to its name, some water-proofing, shock-proofing and freeze-proofing measures. Dive into the links below for the complete details, and look for the whole lot to be available in March.
