  • Microsoft CES keynote wrap-up: Prototype HP Slate, Project Natal and T-Mobile HD2 unveiled

    M18

Microsoft just wrapped its CES keynote speech and it was predictably uninspiring. Despite its blandness, Ballmer and Bach did reveal some information that qualifies as borderline newsworthy. First up, Microsoft debuted a prototype tablet powered by Windows 7 and manufactured by HP. Sadly, the rumored Courier was no where to be found. Mr. Ballmer also unveiled the T-Mobile HD2 but thanks to T-Mobile’s twitter account, we had advance warning. Last but not least and probably the best news of all is Project Natal, Microsoft’s motion controlled gaming peripheral, is slated to arrive in time for the holiday 2010 shopping season. For those that want a closer look at the prototype HP Slate, a few press photos are after the jump.

  • Municipal fiber needs more FDR localism, fewer state bans

How frustrating to be the mayor of a small town without good broadband access today. Imagine trying to entice businesses or entrepreneurs to a region where the best Internet option is the slow DSL most of us discarded nearly a decade ago for faster speeds.

The “broadband market” in much of the US happily provides snail-speed connections at inflated prices when compared to many of our peer nations. Cable and telephone companies see little reason to upgrade these networks—the low population density does not lend itself to quickly recovering investments.

  • Samsung’s pico projecting W9600 gets a brief hands on

Samsung made a fairly tame showing at CES but we did bump into a rather sweet bit of integrated projection fun. The W9600 replaces last year’s W7900, and, like its predecessor, the specs are pretty thin. We do know, however, know that it uses Texas Instruments’ WVGA chip for the projection, has a 5 megapixel cam, a completely beautiful touchscreen AMOLED display, and can project vids, pics, and even the phone’s interface. We’ve always felt that projection phones are pretty toys but ultimately, we didn’t see a really solid reason they existed when we first saw them, and we still don’t with the W9600. That being said, this phone doesn’t feel so much like a work in progress, the focus wheel, finish, branding and the rest make this feel a bit more like a real phone and less like a dummy phone. Of course, the whole point is moot as the Anycall-branded W9600 will likely never make its way to our pockets, let alone our carriers. But do feel free to wander the gallery and take in the sights.

  • LG eXpo projector hands-on

You’ll be familiar with the LG eXpo and its specs already — which include a slideout QWERTY keyboard and 1GHz Snapdragon under the hood — but we thought we’d go try the handset out for ourselves and tell you what we thought. Construction on this little machine was plenty sturdy to withstand the bumps associated with its unusual shape, while the keyboard slider mechanism had a reassuring feel to it. On the whole our impression was that you’ve got a middle of the road modern phone with a sales hook that depends on just how into projecting your images you are. Trust us, the sharp and large picture you may hope for from this device is possible only in very limited circumstances — even a moonlit night seems likely to mess with your enjoyment of the attached pico projector’s output. For the most part, you’ll have to be content with either watching 14-inch movies with the curtains drawn, or projecting ill-defined naughty pictures on the whiteboard while the teacher isn’t looking. Even if neither of those sounds like your kind of thing, feel welcome to peruse the hands-on gallery below.

  • HP Mini Android smartbook hands-on

Okay, so it isn’t the HP Slate, but this Qualcomm Snapdragon-powered, Android-running Mini is definitely a departure from all the netbooks they’ve been putting out lately. At this point, this is just a concept and the white plastic chassis is far from pretty or final, and frankly it just looks like a last generation HP Mini. The 10-inch resistive touch display was responsive to finger taps from what we could see in our brief fondling. Oh and the Android we know and love was, you know, running. It all looks interesting, but for now we were way more impressed with Lenovo’s Skylight. Video coming soon.

  • Eyes-on with DirecTV 3D

Panasonic invited us to a sneak peak of 3D at its booth tonight and representatives from DirecTV were there showing off its new 1080p 3D HD demo feed. The quality was pretty good and quite enjoyable. There were no noticeable compression artifacts in the demo loop which included soccer, College Football, Avatar, Toy Story 3, and a few documentaries with awesome architecture and breathtaking views of mountains and ocean wildlife. We also had the chance to speak with the DirecTV technical staff which told us that the 1080p24 3D signal doesn’t take any more bandwidth than 2D content at the same resolution and frame rate. We were told the demo was indeed real and that we were actually watching the signal you’ll be able to watch in June — after your existing set-top gets a simple firmware update and assuming you have a 3D HDTV, that is. We have to say this is something we’re looking forward to and with every demo we become more convinced that 3D is actually going to take off.

  • MyFord dash and Sync App Ecosystem hands-on

MyFord dash and Sync App Ecosystem make us want a blue oval
You’ve read the PR, seen the press shots, and probably snickered a little at the quote from Ford’s Derrick Kuzak indicating that his company’s latest tech “will cause people to fall in love with their vehicles again.” After getting a chance to play with a few entrants into the company’s so-called Sync App Ecosystem, and getting behind the wheel of a MyFord-equipped mockup vehicle, we’re not laughing — but we are smiling. It’s impressive tech, so read on through to see some videos and check our impressions.

  • Dell goes pro with 27-inch UltraSharp U2711 WQHD LCD monitor (hands-on)

Dell’s laptop and desktop lineups may hog all of the attention, but the company’s range of LCDs have proven to be contenders over the years. Not one to shy away from the professionals in attendance, the company has today released its first-ever WQHD monitor: the 27-inch UltraSharp U2711. Boasting a native 2,560 x 1,440 resolution, this beast just may pack enough pixels to sway you back into the single-monitor camp. Dell’s also trumpeting the unit’s “billion-color depth and IPS technology,” and the 6-millisecond response time, 1,000:1 contrast ratio, 350 nits of brightness and a 12-bit internal processing help to round things out. For the pros who make ends meet by editing photos or video, you’ll probably enjoy knowing that this one boasts a 110 percent color gamut, factory-tuned Adobe RGB and sRGB modes (alongside a color calibration report), custom color adjustments and a smattering of mounting options.

You’ll also find just about every port known to man: HDMI 1.3, DisplayPort, DVI-D (x2), VGA, composite, component, USB (x4) and an 8-in-1 multicard reader. ‘Course, the actual aesthetics are nothing to write home about, but again, this one’s being targeted at end users who care less about the bezel and more about true-to-life pixel performance. We had a chance to toy around with the new beast, and frankly, we were mesmerized. Without an in-house color calibrator, we can’t speak for those who need oodles of numbers and bar charts to tell if a monitor is performing correctly, but we can say that the panel was remarkably sharp, crisp and accurate — more so than our (much adored) 24-inch 2408WFP, that’s for sure. Be prepared to catch this one next month with an MSRP of $1,049.

Aluratek hasn’t been one to really rival the mainstays in the digiframe and e-reader markets, but the outfit’s latest portable media player looks atypically slick. Boasting an expansive 8.9-inch display and an almost slate-like look, the Cinepal arrives with 4GB of inbuilt memory, an SD / SDHC expansion slot, 720p display and a built-in Li-ion good for up to six hours of continuous use. Aside from playing back WMA and MP3 jams, it’ll also handle DRM-laced DivX files along with the usual assortment: AVI, VOB, DAT, MPEG, H.264, MKV, JPEG, etc. Best of all, the player is priced at just $179, and it’ll be available next month for the Yanks who care.

  • Acer rolls out new budget-focused Core i3 and Core i5 Aspire laptops

Those Intel Core i3 and Core i5 mobile processors we’ve been hearing about for quite awhile now are finally finding a home, and one of their first stops is Acer’s Aspire lineup. Notoriously known as solid performing and affordable rigs, both the new 15.6-inch Aspire AS5740 and 17-inch Aspire AS7740 will start at under $800. Not too shabby considering the $750 AS7740 configuration includes a 2.14GHz Intel Core i3-330M CPU, 4GB of RAM, Windows 7 Home Premium and a Blu-ray drive. While the $750 AS5740 doesn’t have Blu-ray, its got a 2.2GHz Intel Core i5-430M processor, 4GB of RAM, and discrete ATI graphics. Acer will offer lots of variations on the specs, but at the end of the day these guys are talking performance and a price we can get behind.

  • Nairobi: $20 million a year in bribes?

Nairobi buses on strike over police shakedowns

Times-News, The (Twin Falls, ID) – Monday, January 4, 2010

Thousands of Nairobi residents are being forced to walk long distances to work after the owners of privately owned buses that many laborers depend on began a three-day strike Monday to protest police shakedowns.

Dickson Mbugua, the chairman of an association representing the bus owners and workers, said transport drivers pay police more than $20 million a year in bribes. Mbugua says the shakedowns are crippling their businesses and that no action has been taken by the government despite numerous complaints.

"A police officer from the traffic department goes home every day with no less than 5,000 shillings ($65) in his pockets … all gained through extortion," Mbugua said.

The average monthly salary for a Nairobi police officer is about $200.

The international anti-corruption watchdog Transparency International ranks Kenya’s police force as East Africa’s most corrupt institution.

National police spokesman Eric Kiraithe said steps have been taken to apprehend police officers demanding bribes from public transport operators.

" Bus operators and the public in general are assured that every possible effort is being made to ensure that traffic police officers are courteous and honest in their dealings with motorists," Kiraithe said in a statement.

The strike was timed to coincide with the first day of business after the holiday season. Mbugua estimated that 51,000 vehicles participated in the strike.

  • hint.fm: The Joy of Revelation through Expressive Visualization

    hint_fm.jpg
Two of the very best visualization designers and researchers around today, Fernanda Viegas and Martin Wattenberg, have started a new website, titled Hint.fm [hint.fm] (or it exists much longer and I just didn’t know). The website collects their past presentations, publications, exhibitions, press coverage, and all of their works, of which Many Eyes, FleshMap, and Phrase Nets are just a few. Most projects are remarkable in their apparent focus on combining the aspects of beauty and story-telling through the presentation data. As they state themselves in the colophon, “Unlike … traditional uses, we believe visualization to be an expressive medium that invites emotion.

Two latest project stand out. “Flickr Flow” is based on a large collection of photographs of the Boston Common taken from Flickr. A specifically design algorithm calculates the relative proportions of different colors seen in photos taken in each month of the year, and plotted them on a wheel. The resulting diagram picks up the ebb and flow of seasonal colors.

Web Seer” attempts to visualize people’s innermost thoughts by using data originating from Google Suggest (the drop-down box that guesses your search query while you write). The interactive tool contrast two separate search queries, as it highlights the commonly shared and opposite suggestions proposed by the Google algorithm. The arrow thicknesses show the number of web pages for each question. Insightful examples include “are Democrats” versus “are Republicans“, or “shopping for men” versus “shopping for women“. Both authors describe a qualitative analysis of the resulting graphs at a recent op-ed (“op-chart”) in The New York Times.

  • Rugged Olympus Stylus Tough 3000 Camera Adds 720p Recording and Dog Tracking [Cameras]

Olympus’ Stylus Tough 3000 camera is bascially identical to last year’s Stylus Tough 6000. Same sensor (TruePic III), same ruggedness (waterproof to 10 ft, shockproof to 5 ft), same megapixel count (12mp). The difference this year? 720p video recording.

This year’s model also gets a drop in price, starting at $230, down from the $300 price tag on the Stylus Tough 6000. It is not as rugged as the 8000 series, though, which goes deeper.

RETURN FROM LIFE’S EVERYDAY ADVENTURES WITH HIGH DEFINITION PROOF: THE NEW OLYMPUS STYLUS TOUGH-3000

CENTER VALLEY, Pa., January 6, 2010 – Olympus unveils the STYLUS TOUGH-3000, a shockproof, waterproof and freezeproof compact camera designed to capture all of life’s adventures from the extreme to the everyday. As the first Stylus Tough camera with High-Definition (HD) video, features like Magic Filter that expand your creativity and AF tracking to keep subjects in focus, the STYLUS TOUGH-3000 is as smart as it is durable. It’s also the first of several Stylus Tough cameras to be launched in 2010.

The STYLUS TOUGH-3000 also offers a new graphical user interface (GUI) for intuitive operation and new OLYMPUS [ib] software for rapid downloading and enhanced photo organization with Geotagging and Face Recognition functionality.

“The STYLUS TOUGH-3000 is the latest in the Stylus Tough series, a family of compact cameras designed for the places where families really go, like the pool, the slopes and the great outdoors,” said Nadine Clark, product manager, Olympus Imaging America Inc. “With HD video and 12 megapixels of resolution, you’ll relive life’s adventures.”

HD Videos and HDMI Control for a Home Theater Experience

The STYLUS TOUGH-3000 shoots gorgeous 720p HD videos using a dedicated one-touch button, so you’ll always capture the scene. Playback is also a breeze. Now, you’ll be the hit of the party or any family function when you proudly display your brilliant images and videos on high-definition televisions. Simply connect the camera to an HDTV with an HDMI™ cable, which can be purchased separately at any consumer electronics store. With HDMI Control, you can use your HDTV’s remote to control playback functions and navigate the camera’s menus from the comfort of your favorite couch.

AF Tracking for Friends and Man’s Best Friend

AF Tracking technology locks your fast-moving subject in focus, and continuously adjusts focus and brightness. This enables you to keep in focus fast-moving and unpredictable subjects like snowboarders on your favorite mountain, tropical fish while snorkeling or children at play anywhere in the great outdoors to capture the perfect shot. There’s even a specially designed AF Tracking “Pet Mode” for animal lovers.
Express Your Inner Artist with Magic Filter

In-camera Art Filters debuted on Olympus E-System DSLR (digital single lens reflex) cameras last year. Similar technology, called Magic Filter, has been developed for the new STYLUS TOUGH-3000. The Magic Filter enables the user to enhance and customize images as they’re being captured. This translates into more fun and flexibility as customization is no longer limited to using expensive and time-consuming computer software.

    The new Magic Filter includes:

    * Pop Art – Enhance and saturate colors to create vivid, high-impact pictures that express the joyful, lighthearted feeling of the Pop Art style of the 1960s;
    * Pin Hole – Reduce the peripheral brightness of an image as though it were shot through a pin hole, connecting the viewer intimately with the subject at the center;
    * Fish-Eye – Emulate the wide-angle of a fish-eye lens by taking extremely wide, hemispherical images and magnifying the center of the frame; and
    * Drawing – Turn your image into a sketch outline for children to color.

Nothing Can Shock This Tough Camera

Afraid the mountain wind might sweep a camera out of your hands and dash it on the rocks below? Never fear, the STYLUS TOUGH-3000, available in fun and sporty red, pink, blue and green, can withstand a five-foot drop thanks to the Stylus Tough series’ shock-absorbing technology, which minimizes the impact on the lens and circuitry.

    Point-Dunk-and-Shoot Cameras

Stylus Tough series cameras perform as well underwater as they do on land because their lightweight, yet durable exteriors are matched with interior rubber gaskets and O-rings to seal out the elements. The STYLUS TOUGH-3000 can be submerged up to 10 feet underwater. The inclusion of four preset underwater scene modes makes this camera perfect for taking photos while swimming, snorkeling or simply having worry-free fun in the pool. It can also capture HD movies underwater. The camera features a water-repellent lens coating to prevent water droplets from forming on the lens and enabling you to get crystal-clear shots no matter how wet the shooting environment.
    Freezeproof for Arctic Adventures
Whether you’re in the arctic tundra or building a snowman in your backyard, the STYLUS TOUGH-3000 camera can still perform when the temperature dips well below freezing (14 degrees Fahrenheit; -10 degrees Celsius). Stylus Tough cameras continue to enable you to capture great images in freezing situations where most traditional cameras would fail.
Wide-Angle Optical Zoom Captures It All

The STYLUS TOUGH-3000 features a 3.6x wide-angle optical zoom (28-102mm equivalent in 35mm photography, f3.5-5.0) so that even more of the subject makes it into each shot – perfect for underwater photography. The lens does not protrude from its body so it is further protected from harsh conditions.

Cut Out the Blur with Dual Image Stabilization

Dual Image Stabilization combines two technologies – mechanical Sensor-Shift Image Stabilization and Digital Image Stabilization – to provide one powerful anti-blur solution for capturing great images whether the photographer or the subject is moving. Olympus’ mechanical Sensor-Shift Image Stabilization keeps images sharp by adjusting the internal image sensor to compensate for camera movement, even in low-light conditions when shutter speeds are slower. Additionally, Digital Image Stabilization freezes the action with high ISO sensitivity and fast shutter speeds that prevent blurry images often caused by a moving subject.

Hit Them with Your Best Shot: Tap Control

The Stylus Tough cameras can be controlled with a simple tap on their top, back or sides, which is made possible thanks to their internal 3D accelerometer that detects the direction of the force on the camera’s body. In adverse climates, Tap Control ensures fast adjustment of settings even if you are wearing gloves that make pressing traditional buttons nearly impossible.

12 Megapixels for Superior Image Quality

The STYLUS TOUGH-3000 camera offers a 12-megapixel image sensor enabling consumers to achieve consistently sharp and vivid images when producing large-format prints or cropping/enlarging a portion of an image.

    Can’t Hide with Face Detection!

Portrait and group shots make family reunions live beyond the short event, and with Face Detection you’ll capture even the shyest relatives. The STYLUS TOUGH-3000 detects up to 16 faces within the frame and automatically focuses and optimizes exposure to capture sharp, brilliant portraits and group shots. Thanks to the unrivaled durability of the Stylus Tough series, you’ll capture amazing photos even if your next family reunion is at a national park, a water park or a ski slope!

    Intelligent Auto Thinks for You

Skating at night? You won’t be the last one on the ice setting your camera. Intelligent Auto Mode automatically identifies what you are shooting (i.e., Portrait, Night + Portrait, Landscape, Macro and Sports) and adjusts the camera’s settings to capture the best quality results. First-time users can jump into this quick and hassle-free feature that does the thinking for them and produces incredible images.

Broaden Your Horizons with In-Camera Panorama

The places you can take Stylus Tough cameras – the rocky terrain of the Grand Canyon, the arctic glaciers of Alaska or the volcanic sand beaches of Hawaii – are locations where you want to capture as much of the scene as you can. In-Camera Panorama mode makes it easy by capturing three images and stitching them together to create one amazing panoramic picture. Simply press the shutter button and slowly pan across a panoramic scene. The second and third images will be captured automatically and stitched together with the first image – resulting in one seamless panorama-size picture. To create the ultimate panoramic picture, consumers can use the OLYMPUS [ib] Software to stitch up to 10 images together.
    TruePic™ III Image Processor

Olympus developed its exclusive TruePic III image processor for the demanding performance of digital SLR (single lens reflex) cameras. Olympus’ enhanced TruePic III Image Processor produces crystal-clear photos using all the pixel information for each image to deliver superior picture quality with more accurate colors, true-to-life flesh tones and faster processing speeds. TruePic III also captures crisp, clear images at high ISO settings, which are traditionally associated with increasing image noise or producing grainy photos.

OLYMPUS [ib] Software and In-Camera Manual

All Spring 2010 digital compact cameras, including the Stylus Tough series, will offer the new OLYMPUS [ib] software. The new software includes photography workflow, browsing, editing and unique photo organizing functions. You can organize your photos by person with automatic face recognition technology, by location with a Geotagging function or by event. You can easily view photos on an HDTV or on the camera’s LCD with the Photo Surfing or Slideshow functions. The name [ib] stands for image bridging, image browsing and brighten images. The new software will be available for Windows operating systems only.

The STYLUS TOUGH-3000 will come equipped with the instruction manual saved on the camera’s new internal memory. This translates into easily referencing instructions while shooting on the go. The internal memory also enables in-camera image playback in an organized fashion. Eliminating a paper or CD-Rom instruction manual is part of Olympus’ ongoing environmental commitment to conserve natural resources and reduce its carbon footprint.

    SD Compatibility

Olympus’ new Spring 2010 digital compact cameras offer SD capability for up to 32 gigabytes of capacity.

    Availability

The STYLUS TOUGH-3000 will be available in February 2010. It includes: wrist strap, camera WIN/Mac USB cable, audio/video cable, Li-Ion rechargeable battery, warranty card and manual and OLYMPUS [ib] Software on the camera.

  • Beyonce Dies Photos

Beyonce, with the current top hit song Sweet Dreams (Beautiful Nightmare), Single Ladies, and Halo has been on of the most popular female performer today.

Seeing from the Honda Tech Forums, the current trend says this hoax has been around for more than a year already. While on the Topix Forums, it says something like this:
What caused the death of troubled socialite and heiress Casey Johnson, who was discovered dead in her LA home yesterday? It’s too soon to say since toxicology results are pending, although at least one tabloid is suggesting prescription pills may have been involved. In a bizarre twist to the story, Johnson’s “fiancée,” reality TV star/fame addict Tila Tequila, tweeted last night that Johnson hadn’t actually died and was really in a coma, before backtracking a little while later and acknowledging what had already been confirmed by the police. Tequila’s also believed to be the last person to have seen the Johnson & Johnson heiress alive.
Singer Beyonce Knowles has been reported to be in serious condition and taken to Golden State Regional Hospital after a minor traffic accident that escalated into a physical altercation in Fullerton CA, a suburb 30 minutes south east of Los Angeles.

Witness reports indicate that Beyonce Knowles’s BMW struck a pick up truck towing landscaping equipment. Three men exited the truck and extracted her from the vehicle then began kicking and punching the singer before fleeing the scene.
She didn’t have a chance against these men who attacked her before she said a single word to them, replied a visibly shaken onlooker.

Beyonce Knowles was unresponsive upon the arrival of police officers and EMT’s, but appeared to be breathing according to eyewitness reports.

But seeing the news appeared August 10, 2009 and since then, the top news sites haven’t put anything about it, then it should be a hoax. And yes, she just performed during the Miss Universe 2009.
