    Welcome back to a new year of Ask TUAW, our weekly troubleshooting Q&A column. This week we’ve got questions about cheap scanners, encrypting backups, recovering deleted files, troubleshooting new hardware, and more.

    As always, your suggestions and questions are welcome. Leave your questions for next week in the comments section at the end of this post. When asking a question, please include which machine you’re using and what version of Mac OS X is installed on it (we’ll assume you’re running Snow Leopard on an Intel Mac if you don’t specify), or if it’s an iPhone-related question, which iPhone version and OS version you have.

    I am looking for a scanner similar to a ScanSnap or NeatReceipts for my dorm. I get a lot of handouts from classes (among other things), and keeping track of them all is a hassle (and makes studying more difficult). However, ScanSnap and NeatReceipts mobile scanners run along the lines of $200… perhaps you know of a cheaper alternative, or a place to get them for less?

    It hasn’t been released yet, but there’s been some buzz around the net for the Doxie Scanner at $129. Now you’d have to ask yourself if you could really stand the pink hearts, but it does seem like it might work out for you. That said, I recently picked up a ScanSnap 300M on eBay for $150 and love it (it works great with Evernote), so you might also be able to score one that way.

    Is it possible to make an encrypted backup using Time Machine? I am worried that if I make a backup on an external drive and lose the drive (or it gets stolen), all my data will be accessible. I would really like to make use of Time Machine.

    Ah, possible is one of those tricky words. I have found a tutorial for creating an encrypted Time Machine sparsebundle, however it’s frankly quite a bit of a hack. My suggestion is a bit different. Do you really need your whole backup (music, videos, etc.) to be encrypted? For most people I would think that there are actually only a few things you’d need encrypted (e.g. financial documents, etc.). In that case, what I would do is create an encrypted disk image to store the sensitive stuff and then just let Time Machine do its normal thing. Keep in mind that any change to the contents of the encrypted disk image means that the whole thing will get backed up again, so don’t make it any bigger than you need it.

    If you happen to have a hard drive that does encryption in hardware (like this one), then you don’t need to worry; your Time Machine backups will be uncrackable along with any other data on the drive.

    I have an early 2009 Mac mini that I use as my regular computer and and also as an HTPC. I have a 17″ 1280×1024 LCD on my desk connected via a mini-DVI-to-DVI adapter. My 720p (1368×768) TV is connected via a DisplayPort-to-DVI adapter. I am considering getting a bigger monitor for my desk. What would be the maximum resolution I could go that will allow me to continue to use my TV the way I am using it right now?

    Another reader helpfully pointed to this Apple Tech Spec for the mini which reveals that the mini “simultaneously supports up to 1920 by 1200 pixels on a DVI or VGA display; up to 2560 by 1600 pixels on a dual-link DVI display using Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter.” In other words, you can pretty much get any monitor you want to replace the 17″ up to and including a huge 30″ dual-link. Now I wouldn’t expect much 3D performance out of it, but it should get the job done for normal usage.

    I accidentally delete my video files on my external hard drive, how do I recover these? Running two machines, one with Snow Leopard and the other Leopard. Any solution that’s FREE?

    In a case like this the first thing to do is stop using the drive immediately. There is a free command line tool that you could try first: Photorec. It may be a bit tricky to use, but the price is right. Traditionally the go-to application for data recovery on the Mac is Data Rescue III from Tech-Pro ($99). They do have a demo that should at least tell you if it’ll work for you before you buy.

    Santa brought me a new 500GB HDD and 4GB of RAM from OWC for my black MacBook 2.4 running Snow Leopard. I used SuperDuper! to clone the drive and I noticed when I was done the original drive had 224.49GB on it while the new cloned drive had 221.49. I contacted the folks at SuperDuper about the 3GB lose and they said it was normal to loose files so I went ahead and installed the new drive and RAM and it booted just fine but now Safari, iTunes, Handbrake and others crash constantly. I can’t have multiple applications open without crashes. Syncing an iPhone will cause iTunes to crash. I get notices of plug-ins missing like Flash for Safari, etc. I don’t know if the problem is with the HDD, the new RAM (which seems slower than the 2GB I removed) or with the cloned made with SuperDuper!. Any thoughts before I reinstall everything to original and return the gifts?

    Here’s what I would do: I doubt it’s the RAM, but it should be easy enough to switch your old RAM back in and see if you’ve still got the problem. If so, what I would do is get a cheap USB to SATA adapter (like this one) and try booting from you old drive to see if you still have the problems (or just get a cheap USB or FireWire case and then you can use the old drive for backups). If the old drive still works as the boot disk, you could try cloning that drive to the new drive one more time, perhaps this time with Carbon Copy Cloner, just to see if it might help.

    When I got my new MBP 17″ I used Time Machine to move my apps and files over from my old MBP 15″. Since then, I have upgraded to snow leopard, and cut the cords and went all Intel apps, and didn’t install rosetta. This has been fine for months, but all of a sudden, I am getting the message “To open Microsoft Sync Services, you need to install Rosetta. Would you like to install it now?” I don’t know what application/service is prompting me for this, but I would like it to stop!

    It’s almost certainly Microsoft Entourage that’s causing the problem. Are you trying to use Office 2004 perhaps? If not, perhaps there’s some crud (technical term) from an older upgrade of Microsoft Office? If that’s the case it might be helpful to re-install Office 2008 to get rid of the problem.

    In any event, it’s fine to go ahead and install Rosetta automatically — it won’t slow you down.

    I was wondering if there is a program out there for organization that would be a kind of mind mapping meets Spotlight (for documents, images, keywords, whatever) meets Voodoo Pad meets Tinderbox. I would love to be able to jot notes down and have a program organize it based on other information it had in live updating, whether it’s other notes or information I’ve linked to it. Is there anything out there like that? The best would be if it gave it in a visual medium much like a mind map, but linked through multiple bubbles.

    It’s not a visual mapper, but I would point you toward DEVONthink Pro. It features some automatic sorting and filing technologies that sound somewhat similar to what you’re trying to do. That said, it doesn’t display these relationships in a visual way like Tinderbox.

    I’ll enlist the help of our resident mindmap maven and see if there are any other suggestions to add.

  • CES: Steve Ballmer Keynote [Digital Daily]

    ballmer_fonzieSteve Ballmer is delivering his annual state-of-Microsoft address at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas tonight — the second he’s given since taking over duties for former CEO Bill Gates. If it’s anything like last year’s, it will offer a broad overview of Microsoft’s (MSFT) consumer strategy for the year, touching on everything from the company’s hardware-software ecosystem to its home entertainment offerings. Likely to figure prominently in tonight’s address, Windows 7 and the new touch-enabled PC form factors it has evidently inspired, Bing and Natal, Microsoft’s controllerless game control system which will launch in time for the 2010 holidays.

  • General Motors teases GMC Urban Utility Concept

    “Efficient. Compact. Fashionable.”

    That’s how General Motors sums up its teaser of the GMC Urban Utility Concept before it’s official reveal next week at the Detroit Auto Show. Although GM Labs doesn’t divulge much about the concept, the second teaser and few lines from the site provide a clear indication of what GMC is attempting to produce: a Kia Soul, Nissan Cube and Scion xB competitor.

    Like its boxy brethren, GMC is pitching the Urban Utility Concept as the mobile home-away-from-home for the modern youth, calling it “a new breed of truck that’s as efficient as it is chic, innovative as it is functional.” The popularity of the aforementioned four-wheeled refrigerator boxes notwithstanding, does a compact trucklet really fit in with GMC’s “Professional Grade” image?   • Pandora and Pioneer test drive internet radio in cars

    Pioneer AVIC-U220With the auto industry seeing the second straight monthly gain in auto sales, it’s the perfect time for Pioneer Electronics, a manufacturer of car audio systems, and Pandora, the popular web based radio service, to announce a partnership  that could shake up how we listen to music while we’re on the go.

    Pioneer will be making a device that will not only automatically detect Pandora settings on either an iPhone or iPod touch and display them on the navigation screen, but also host navigation and other entertainment features.

    The device isn’t cheap at $1,200, but Pioneer isn’t worried because it targets some 42 million Pandora users who might be willing to pay for a complete Pandora experience both on and off the web. That large user base is partly why no cash has been exchanged in this deal as Pioneer is now able to reach a large new target market, according to The Wall Street Journal.

    This isn’t the first time an internet radio advancement has been unveiled at CES. Last year, Blaupunkt, a car stereo maker, and miRoamer, the web-based radio service, announced the launch of two stereo head units for consumers to play internet radio in their vehicles. Thanks to a plug and play SIM, the device runs on a 3G network similar to a cell phone. There hasn’t been much follow up since the announcement, but both devices are available on the Blaupunkt web site.

  • Saygus Vphone Runs On Android, Claims it Can Make Video Calls Over EDGE [Smartphones]

    Wired got a hands on with the mysterious Saygus Vphone, that popped up over at the FCC back in November. They say the Android phone is capable of making video calls—even over EDGE.

    Saygus CEO Chad Sayers told Wired that the company developed a proprietary video algorithm for the CDMA handset that allows them to transfer video data at 18-22 frames per second over EDGE and up to 30 fps over 3G. Sayers also said that 10,000 minutes of video conferencing would only take up 5 gigabytes of bandwidth.

    As for specs, the Vphone has a 3.5-inch screen, a 624 MHz Marvell processor, and a 5-megapixel camera with autofocus and flash. Wired says the phone looks and feels like the droid, but with a better keyboard. And apparently the Vphone is in carrier testing (possibly Verizon?). [Wired]

    La aerolínea creo una filíal con la línea Santa Bárbara Airlines también de Venezuela, con quien emprende la expansión internacional, la llamada ahora SBA Airlines pretende operar desde Caracas a Bogotá, Lima, Miami, Europa y otras localidades. Por otro lado colabora con la aerolínea dominicana Pan Am World Airways Dominicana mejor conocida como Pawa, Simeón García tenia un porcentaje de las acciones de esta línea vendiéndola en abril pasado 2009, actualmente mantiene colaboración indirecta con Pawa a quien le renta 4 DC9.

  • David Hasselhoff Leaving “America’s Got Talent”

    David Hasselhoff is leaving America’s Got Talent. After four seasons on NBC’s popular summer talent show, the troubled former actor/singer is walking away from the judges’ panel he shares with pundits Sharon Osbourne and Piers Morgan.


    “I am proud that I was part of making America’s Got Talent the No. 1 rated show for the past four summers. It’s been a rewarding experience and now I’m thrilled to be able to follow my dream to do my own TV show, which will be announced very shortly,” Hasselhoff, 57, said in statement issued late Wednesday. “I want to thank my friend, (executive producer) Simon Cowell, and everyone at NBC and Fremantle for the opportunity for four great years.”

    While The Hoff has not revealed exactly what he’ll do next, but a trip to rehab might be in order. The star of the ‘80 TV smash Knightrider was hospitalized twice for alcohol-related illnesses in the past year.

    “David’s been an integral part of the success of America’s Got Talent and we are sad to see him go. We wish him all the best with his new show,” NBC said of Hasselhoff’s departure.

    A replacement has not yet been named.

    The new SC-HTB1 home theater audio system is fed up with subwoofers thinking they’re sooooo special. So it decided to put the bass in its place: inside the soundbar.

    An all-in-one speaker system is a boon to the space-challenged studio dwellers out there: the entire set-up is a single soundbar that rests in front of your TV.   • Does Pandora for Cars Spell Death for Deejays?

    pandora_logo_jan09a.jpgThe only reason streaming web music hasn’t completely killed all other forms of music distribution is the fact that it’s not available when you’re traveling across wireless networks – say, in a car. Well hold on to your hats and start canceling your satellite radio subscriptions, Pandora is taking to the road.

    radiotower.jpgAccording to a recent Paid Content article, Pandora announced a partnership with Pioneer at the Consumer Electronics Show. The speaker manufacturer will begin selling a device in March that detects users’ Pandora settings via their iPhones. While the $1200 dollar price tag for the connection device is high, the fact that the service is free will theoretically save consumers from paying monthly radio subscription fees.

    However, if Pioneer manages to partner with other music providers like Microsoft with Zune Marketplace, Spotify or MOG, then web subscriptions will simply be cross-platform music accounts. While Paid Content suggests that we’re looking at the end for satellite radio companies like Sirius XM, we think the greater effect of web-enabled cars might be the end of professionally curated music.   • First hands on: Samsung E6 e-book reader

    So Matt and I just got our hands on the Samsung E6, the company’s first electronic book reader. As a device it’s not bad, but compared to what’s out there you just know that Samsung was all, “We need to release something to get a foothold in the market.”

    The 6-inch e-redaer slides open, quite possibly like a phone you once owned. It’s only black and white, too, so those of you expecting Samsung to usher in the era of color e-reaers will be disappointed.

    The fact is, all of these e-readers are so similar that it really does come down to where you can get books from. For the E6, Samsung partnered with Google to bring its vast collection of public domain books to the reader. And while a partnership with Google is great, and may well lead to future fun and excitement, the idea of partnering up with someone just to get public domain books is sorta weird. Whereas the nook and Kindle are backed by the Barnes and Noble and Amazon bookstores, respectively, the E6 doesn’t have that same commercial relationship, at least not yet.

    So, again, as a device not too bad, but e-readers are so similar these days (at least until a company releases a full-color one) that it’s sorta like choosing between an Xbox 360 an PS3: which exclusive games (read: books) are you most interested in reading? And you go from there.

    It should be available in March (such are the current plans) for $399, with a 10-inch version costing $599.

    Samsung’s New E-book Series Boasts First-of-its-Kind Functionality with a Precision Stylus Pen

    Las Vegas, January 6, 2009 – Samsung Electronics America, Inc., a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics Corporation, today unveiled its first e-book devices, with six-inch and ten-inch screen size offerings, at the 2010 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. The E6 and E101 further solidify Samsung’s position as a global leader in display technology by raising the bar on the quality of writing capabilities for e-books.

    “We’ve used our expertise to create a high-quality e-book with today’s on-the-go consumer in mind,” said Young Bae, director of display marketing, Samsung Information Technology Division. “Samsung is addressing a common frustration that users experience with many of today’s digital readers with a stylus that allows them to annotate their favorite works or take notes. Coupled with wireless functionality that enables sharing of content, this is a truly multi-faceted device..”

    Handwriting Capabilities

    Unlike other e-book devices, Samsung’s E6 and E101 enables handwriting directly onto the display, allowing users to annotate their reading selections, calendars and to-do lists with a built-in electromagnetic resonance (EMR) stylus pen. This dedicated pen prevents mistypes caused by hands and other objects that may graze the screen’s surface. A variety of pen and eraser thicknesses make the Samsung e-books perfect for drawing and writing.

    Low Power Consumption

    The Samsung e-book displays reflect light naturally and deliver an appearance similar to that of printed paper, allowing people to read more naturally than they would with other backlit electronic paper devices. The E101 boasts a ten-inch screen, while the E6, is the more portable sibling at six inches. Because Samsung’s e-book is not backlit, the power consumption is lower than that of other portable display devices. Only four hours of charging prepares the battery for up to two weeks of use, depending on the extent of daily use.

    Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Wireless

    Samsung’s e-books are equipped for wireless connectivity as well. Wi-Fi 802.11b/g allows users to download content such as books and newspapers from a server wirelessly, as well as to share certain content with other devices. Bluetooth 2.0 is also a built in feature.
    The Samsung E6 and E101 will be priced at $399 and $699, respectively. They will be available in early 2010.
