  • Sony Won’t Support Its Own Movie For An Oscar Over Misplaced Piracy Fears [Voices]

    By Mike Masnick, Editor, Techdirt

One of Jack Valenti’s final battles while still in charge of the MPAA was his silly, misguided war on DVD screeners. Screeners are copies of the movie (on DVD, obviously) that are sent out to people to view (to “screen”) for awards shows and the like. Valenti freaked out that since these screeners went out before the official DVDs were out, they would lead to people uploading them online, creating a piracy problem.

  • New book: The last pharaohs

    What’s New in Papyrology
The Last Pharaohs: Egypt Under the Ptolemies, 305-30 BC
    J. G. Manning

Introduction is available as a PDF

The history of Ptolemaic Egypt has usually been doubly isolated–separated both from the history of other Hellenistic states and from the history of ancient Egypt. The Last Pharaohs, the first detailed history of Ptolemaic Egypt as a state, departs radically from previous studies by putting the Ptolemaic state firmly in the context of both Hellenistic and Egyptian history. More broadly still, J. G. Manning examines the Ptolemaic dynasty in the context of the study of authoritarian and premodern states, shifting the focus of study away from modern European nation-states and toward ancient Asian ones. By analyzing Ptolemaic reforms of Egyptian economic and legal structures, The Last Pharaohs gauges the impact of Ptolemaic rule on Egypt and the relationships that the Ptolemaic kings formed with Egyptian society.

  • Who Are The Most Successful Dropouts?

Who says you actually have to complete you education to change the world? Well, tons of people, really. But, still. There have been, and there still are, plenty of very successful people out still that gave up on school to achieve their dreams. And they did. In a big, big way.

    Walt Disney

Back in 1918, Walt Disney, the man that would one day on to be one of the most recognizable names in the world, was merely a high school student that had dreams of being a cartoonist. To take his first step in to this world, he supplemented his high school education with night classes at Chicago’s Academy of Fine Arts.

By 16, Disney was fed up with school and decided that it was time to join the army, but he ran in to a bit of a problem: He was too young. So he joined the Red Cross with a fake birth certificate. Why he didn’t just use the fake birth certificate to get in to the army is anyone’s guess, but it worked and Disney was off to a World War 1 France where he was an ambulance driver. In love with drawing, Walt decorated the sides of the ambulance with large pictures of some characters of his own creation.

After the war, Walt found himself back in America without a job. He picked up a few paying art gigs with magazines, movie theaters and such, but nothing that stuck. He partnered up with a buddy of his, Ub Iwerks. Together they formed Iwerks-Disney Commercial Artists. It was with Iwerks that Walt Disney co-created the now globally known character of Mickey Mouse.

Disney would eventually go on to become a multi-millionaire and, at the age of 58, was given an honorary high school diploma.

    John D. Rockefeller

If the name isn’t familiar to you, it’s okay. Rockefeller was only the world’s first recorded billionaire and founded one of the biggest oil companies the world has ever seen in Standard Oil. But before all that, he was a high school student…

…and then he wasn’t when he dropped out of high school 2 weeks before his graduation. He immediately enrolled in Folsom Mercantile College (which he also dropped out of), and later started various small businesses. But in 1870, Rockefeller started the Standard Oil Company of Ohio and quickly became richer than he could have ever imagined.

Rockefeller was a very different kind of billionaire than the ones of today. He gave and gave tons of his own money to charity and to health causes. In fact, the last 40 years of his life was basically on big spending spree as it seemed like he just keep throwing more and more money at charitable causes. And, to top it all off, the self-made billionaire that didn’t graduate high school even helped people all over America receive an education with his many donations.

    Thomas Edison

You know those glasses you’re wearing? Edison. The cameras that the movie you just watched used? Edison. All of those light bulbs you see everywhere, wherever you go? Edison. Thomas Edison invented all of those things, held about 1,000 other patents, was a millionaire and won a Congressional Gold Medal. Pretty good for a person that not only never graduated high school, but only received 3 months worth of an education in his entire life. 3 months!

You see, when Edison was just a boy, he was very sickly. He suffered from Scarlet Fever and, as a result, had middle ear infections. His aliments prevented him from starting school with all the other kids his age, so he just stayed home and was taught by his mother, who was a teacher at one point. When his infections subsided, he finally attended a real school but, as mentioned, only went for about 3 months before he found his mind to wander and he was being made an example of by his teacher.

    Richard Branson

There’s something about the age 16 that just makes brilliant people give up on formal education and just reach for the stars. Modern day billionaire Richard Branson is one of them. Suffering from a cast of mild dyslexia, Branson dropped out of high school because he lagged behind in his studies and his grades were poor.

An entrepreneur at heart, Branson started selling records that he purchased wholesale from manufacturers to large retail stores. After partnering up with some friends, Branson eventually called their company Virgin, the name being a reference to the fact that neither he nor his friends knew a thing about the world of business. He went on to open his own record store, which earned him enough money to purchase a plot of land that he built a recording studio on. As made more and more money off of the studio, Branson decided to turn Virgin in to music production company, signing various artists to deals.

As he made money off of the record company, Branson branched out and tried other ventures; buying night clubs and television stations. By the 1980, Branson had made so much money that he decided to open his own airline called Virgin Air. This eventually led to perhaps his greatest and what will probably be his most lasting achievement: Offering normal people (albeit, very rich people…for now) the chance to fly to space with his new business venture Virgin Galactic.

The man that didn’t graduate high school and couldn’t pay attention to save his life is now offering people the chance to go to space. Pretty astounding.

    Charles Dickens

Sure, one can make the argument that you can still become a successful business man while never going to school. But being a successful writer is a different matter. Well, again, that’s very wrong, as proven by one of the world’s most renowned fiction writers, Mr. Charles Dickens.

At the age of 12, Dickens’ father was sent to prison due to some very heavy debts that were left unpaid. Needing money, Dickens left school and started working 10-hour work days in a shoe factory. As the years past, Dickens held various writing-related jobs including court stenographer and law clerk. This led to a job in journalism, specifically, court reporting. Once he caught the writing bug, Dickens began to write his own short stories, which were eventually collected and printed as his first book, Sketches by Boz.

This opened the doors to his first of many classic novels, The Pickwick Papers.

    Bill Gates

Everyone knows the story of one of the richest men in the world, Bill Gates, so I’ll keep this one quick.

In short, Bill graduated high school and went on to Harvard University. He was doing fairly well until his junior year when he read an article in Popular Electronics magazine about a microcomputer called Altair. Bill was so passionate about technology that he deiced that he was going to make himself a career in technology rather than have to wait another young year to graduate, and then try to find a job.

After partnering up his friend Steve Ballmer (the man that would eventually become the CEO of Microsoft), Bill had a long conversation with his parents about dropping out and his plans for the future. After the talk, Bill had his parent’s blessing to do as he pleased. What he pleased was to create a software company. The company’s name was Micro Soft. The space was later removed.

  • How to import JVC TOD camcorder video files to Final Cut Express?

Have you collected a ton of TOD video files captured by JVC Everio video camcorders? Do you want to import the TOD files to Final Cut Express for editing? Or while you plan to import the TOD files to Final Cut Express, this editing program can not read the TOD video files. Actually I just encountered the issue last week. In order to solve the problem, I searched some related info about it. Now I will share with you the useful info here.

From wikipedia.org, I find that only the following JVC TOD camcorders generate videos in the format of TOD:

    2007: GZ-HD7 (HDD, SD/SDHC card), GZ-HD3 (HDD, SD/SDHC card)

March 2008: GZ-HD5 (HDD, MicroSDHC card), GZ-HD6 (HDD, MicroSDHC card)

June 2008: GZ-HD30, GZ-HD40 (HDD, MicroSDHC card, dual TOD and AVCHD recording)

In other words, all these camcorder users may meet the trouble about importing their camcorder videos to Final Cut Express, since Final Cut Express now can only accept the video formats MOV, MPEG-4, and DV. How to make it if I want to import the TOD files to Final Cut Express? I guess you may have the doubt like this.

Don’t worry. There is Mac TOD Converter in the market now which is designed to convert TOD to any other popular video or audio format with ease, including converting TOD to MPEG-4, MOV, and DV.

Part one: Convert TOD to Final Cut Express with the best easy-to-use Mac TOD Converter

After launch this Mac TOD Converter here, install and run it. Click “Add” button to load the TOD files into this program. Then you can select the output format from the drop-down list “Format” as MOV, DV or MPEG compatible to FCE. If you need, you can also click the “Settings” button to adjust resolution, the aspect ration, bit rate, frame rate, codec and so on.

    Tips:

this Mac TOD Converter is also a good editor which offers the special editing functions like cropping, trimming, merging/joining, effects and watermarks to improve and perfect the TOD files by clicking the “Edit” button on the main interface beside the “Add” button. Remember select the video files you want to edit before you click the button. Otherwise, the button will not active.

Click the “Convert” button to start video conversion. This program supports batch conversion if you need you can use the function.

Part two: Import the converted video files to Final Cut Express

Once the video conversion is finished, you can get the converted files from the destination and then import them to Final Cut Express as below:

Launch Final Cut Express, click on “File” ] Import files to import the converted video files to it. Then you can preview them from the screen on the right as well as edit them with FCE.

That’s all. Hopefully this article will greatly help you.

  • Fastest Porsche ever: 9ff TR 1000

After the GT9-R and its 1,120 hp, the German tuner 9ff has hit the mark again, producing the fastest Porsche in the world with 1000 hp and 1040 Nm of torque. It has reached a top speed of 391 km/hr at the Papenburg testing circuit in Germany.

The flat six engine of the 911 has larger turbochargers, sport camshafts, a sport air filter, revised ECU and high performance exhaust system to create the TR-1000. 9ff reckon they could beat that top speed record again, exceeding 400 km/hr with the right aerodynamic kit.

Acceleration times are: 0-100 km/h in 3.2 sec, 100-200 km/h in 4.8 sec, 200-300 km/h in 8 sec and finally 300-360 km/h in 16 seconds. Other modifications to keep the TR 1000 stable include a splitter, changes to the side skirts, a rear wing and some adjustments to the suspension. It also has high performance brakes and aluminium dampers.

The modifications to the 911 Turbo cost about 130,000 euros and have apparently been done for the girlfriend of a Greek millionaire. Here’s hoping she can drive. Check out the 9ff GT9-R as well for some more serious Porsche tuning.

  • End of an era for Open Text?

It’s not often that a well-known vendor simply vacates a particular software space, effectively forfeiting a chunk of the market to competitors. But that’s what Open Text has decided to do with its main enterprise search product.

Late last year, in the course of updating our Search & Information Access Research, we were informed by Open Text Corporation that a decision had been made to discontinue the company’s Discovery Server search offering. Open Text will continue to apply its search technology to their other products, but no longer sell it as a free-standing offering.

A spokesperson for the Waterloo, Ontario-based company explained: "We have altered our strategy away from dividing our development efforts between the standalone offering (Discovery Server) and the search of our ECM Suite, to focusing solely on the search capabilities of our Suite." Accordingly, "Open Text is no longer actively marketing Discovery Server to the standalone Enterprise Search market. We have committed to key customers that we will support them going forward."

Regular readers of our Search & Information Access Research already know that Open Text has, for quite some time now, effectively treated Discovery Server as an upsell piece for its existing ECM customers rather than a true standalone search offering in the spirit of Oracle Secure Enterprise Search, say, or IBM OmniFind Enterprise Edition. It’s been years since Open Text put any significant marketing muscle behind Discovery Server (to the extent that it ever did).

Still, it’s unusual to see a company with a long history of distinguished R&D in information-retrieval technology (Open Text was originally founded as a data-retrieval tech firm) remove itself from the search market in order to concentrate on ECM technologies.

Is this the beginning of a trend? Probably not. You shouldn’t expect to see Oracle "EOL" the SES brand (or IBM ditch the OmniFind moniker, or Autonomy walk away from IDOL) any time soon. The search market is as robust as ever, and we don’t expect other ECM titans to forgo their pieces of the search pie.

However, the Open Text experience does tend to show that doing "productized search" in depth is not a trivial undertaking. It’s a complex product space and it requires serious commitments in terms of R&D, sales, support, and all the rest. Search is not something you "also offer." It’s a first-class, tier one undertaking.

And that’s how you, as a customer, should look at it too: Search is a complex problem space. Give it the attention it deserves (confront your needs head-on, without underestimating them), or walk away. There’s no in-between.

  • Gettin’ Swole

It’s 4:23 p.m. on a dull Thursday afternoon and I’m staring at an untouched problem set due in less than 24 hours. Meandering into the common room, I contemplate turning on ESPN, the typical immediate remedy to my procrastination, but today I can’t afford to waste away on the couch.

AUDRIE LIN/Staff PhotographerThere’s only one solution: it’s time to get my swell on.

The bike ride to the Tresidder Fitness Center elapses like the minutes before midnight on New Year’s Eve, and unachievable workout goals are made like ludicrous New Year’s Resolutions.

As I make my grand entrance into the workout facility, I swipe my card, give a little “what up” head nod to the cute girl at the front desk and put down my red bookstore bag in a Kindergarten-like cubby. Gathering my iPod and water bottle, I go through a quick, preliminary scouting of the gym.

The small cardio section is halfway full, occupied by two Kappas on the elliptical machines, a 60-something-year-old professor on a treadmill and two freshmen in “Stanford Beirut” shirts talking about the upcoming weekend’s ragers while biking next to each other.

“It’s gonna be fucking sick!” one says to the other.

    He’s the man.

As I walk over to the stationary bicycles on the opposite side of the gym, I recall one of my aforementioned lofty goals: a solid cardio workout for 30 minutes.

    Did I say 30? Let’s aim for 10.

After giving a half-assed effort on the bike while listening to Kid Cudi, I decide that it’s go time and head over to the free weight section.

Two fairly thin Asian pals are spotting each other on the bench, both attempting what appears to be an impossible rep of 150 pounds.

“Come on man, you got this,” the taller of the two says to his friend. As he helps his friend unrack the bar, I watch in disbelief as the lifter’s face turns a shade of red that belittles the “Asian glow.” He struggles with the bar on his chest and, with obvious assistance from his spotter, re-racks the weights with a tremendous exhale.

    “Damn, I was so close!”

    No. No, you weren’t.

I regain focus after unknowingly staring at these two for about five minutes and decide to get involved in a little dumbbell press action. I pick up 45-pound weights for a warm-up set, when, out of nowhere, one of the giant regulars comes and starts curling the 50s.

So, that’s how it’s going to be?

With a quick and awkward exchange of subtle snarls in the mirror, the game of dumbbell chicken is on. I do a quick set and go for the 55s. He immediately grabs the 60s.

Come on, bro; throw me a goddamn bone.

I can still lift the 55s, but I know that I am headed for trouble. Grabbing for the 65s, I see that he goes for the 70s. I struggle through a small set and pick up the 75s, praying for surrender. He glances at the weight in my hands, gives a bull-like huff and walks with a little swag over to the rowing machine.

Can I comfortably chest press 150 pounds? You bet your sweet ass I can’t. Did I win? Absolutely.

As I move onto a new exercise, I spot two more frequenters. As I discreetly turn down the volume of my music, I hear them discuss, what else? Lifting weights.

“I maxed 300 the other day,” one says. “I’m pumped.”

This means one of two things: He’s either really excited to have accomplished a significant workout milestone, or he’s geeked up after snorting a line of creatine. My money is on the second, as the veins in his right forearm are bigger than my biceps.

As I chuckle to myself about the douchiness of many of the gym rats, I get caught in a swarm of hypocrisy. After a set of triceps pushdowns, I catch myself flexing to the beat of Alice Deejay’s techno anthem, “Better Off Alone.”

Shit, I am such a tool.

After pumping a little more iron and undergoing several more moments of awkward mirror eye contact, I decide that my work here is done. I gather my things and give yet another head nod — if only my game with the ladies were as strong as my dumbbell chicken skills.

As I’m exiting the gym, I overhear a conversation between the Asian pair.

    “I just wanna get big.”

    Don’t we all?

    psp_pink

Gamers who’ve always wanted to own a PSP in pink, here’s your chance: Sony Computer Entertainment Japan today announced [JP] exactly that, a limited edition of their handheld system in so-called blossom pink. Needless to say that technically, this pink PSP 3000 isn’t different from a standard model.

  • Michael Jackson ‘This is It’ PS3 bundle makes it a better place for you and me

This is it! And by “it” we, of course, mean corporate synergy, as Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sony Computer Entertainment Japan reach across the cultural divide to bring America’s late King of Pop to the island of Japan in the form of a bundled Blu-ray and “Special Pack” PlayStation 3 SKU. Oof, that last one was bad.
