  • Google Nexus One to rock out on AT&T?

This isn’t completely confirmed, but we’ve heard from a source that there will be an AT&T 3G-compatible version of the Google Nexus One. Our connect described it as being a “second” unlocked model, with the T-Mobile-subsidized unit being locked to T-Mobile. Our tipster was so impressed by a Nexus One in person, they said they would 100% give up their T-Mobile BlackBerry 9700 for one when it’s available. We’ll see what happens on the 5th…

  • You Don’t Mean Average, You Mean Median

Every quarter, without fail, a bunch of articles appear talking about the venture capital industries investment pace as a result of the PWC MoneyTree report.  I used to get calls from all of the Denver / Boulder area reporters about my thoughts on these – that eventually stopped when I started responding “who gives a fuck?”

A few days ago I got a note from Steve Murchie about his new blog titled Angels and Pinheads.  I’m glad Steve is blogging about this as he’s got plenty of experience and thoughts around the dynamics of angel investors – some that I agree with and some that I don’t.  Regardless, my view is that there more there is out there, the better, as long as people engage in the conversation.

In his post Mind the Gap he made an assertion that “the VC industry has effectively stopped investing in seed stage ($500K and less) and startup-stage ($2M and less) opportunities.”  As a VC who makes lots of investments between $250k and $2M, and who has plenty of good friends who happen to be VCs that also make investments in this range (such as Union Square Ventures, First Round Capital, True Ventures, SoftTech VC, FB Founders, Alsop Louis, O’Reilly Alpha Tech, and Highway 12), I thought Steve’s assertion was wrong and I told him so in the comments.  He countered with the PWC Moneytree data on Q3 VC investments.

    Stage Total $M % of Total # Deals Avg / Deal $M
    Later Stage 1611 33.49 168 9.6
    Expansion 1610 33.48 185 8.7
    Early Stage 1081 22.49 198 5.5
    Startup/Seed 507 10.54 86 5.9

Steve’s response to the Startup/Seed “Average Deal Size” was “WTF??!”  While that is the correct reaction, his conclusion (that VCs aren’t investing between $250k and $2M) is incorrect for two simple reasons: (1) the data is the PWC MoneyTree Report is incorrect and incomplete and (2) the interesting number to look at, assuming the data is correct, is the Median, not the Average.  If you wonder why, Wikipedia’s explanation is pretty good: “The median can be used as a measure of location when a distribution is skewed, when end values are not known, or when one requires reduced importance to be attached to outliers, e.g. because they may be measurement errors.”

Let’s look at the underlying data in Silicon Valley (that results in the above table) to understand this better.  Going to the PWC Moneytree Startup/Seed investments in Silicon Valley for Q309, you get the following:

    image

The first six “startup/seed” investments each raised $10M or more.  Now, I’ll accept that these might be classified as “startup rounds” (e.g. the first round of investment) but no rational person would categories these as seed investments.  But, for purposes of this example, let’s keep them in the mix.  The average is $6.4M and the median is $5.0M.  Now, let’s toss out only the ones $10M or great since these clearly aren’t “seed” investments.  Our average is now $3.4M and the median is now $2.0M.

I’m still feeling generous (e.g. I’ll waive reason #1 – that the data is incorrect / incomplete – for the time being).  Let’s look at the PWC Moneytree Startup/Seed investments in New England  for Q309.

    image

The average is $8.4M and the median is $5M.  Now, toss out everything above $10M.  The average is now $3.9M and the median is $4M.

But it gets better.  Let’s take all of the PCW Moneytree Startup/Seed Investments in the US for Q309.  There are 86 of them and as we know from the first table the average is $5.9M.  But the median is $4M.  Now, toss out the ones above $10M.  The average is now $4M and the median is now $3M.  This exercise – again – assuming the data is correct – shows the difference between average and median, as well as how much the numbers are skewed upward by “startup/seed” investments $10m or more.

I’m not going to try very hard to show that that the data is incorrect, but I’ll give you two examples.  The first is FourSquare, a well known seed investment led by Union Square Ventures and O’Reilly AlphaTech.  It was a $1.35M financing, has three employees, and occurred in 9/09.  This is about as close to the definition of a seed investment as you can get.  Yet, PWC Classifies it as Early Stage (plus they got the investment amount wrong as they list it as $1.15M.)  For reference, Dow Jones VentureSource classifies this as a seed investment and gets the amount right.

Let’s do another one.  This time look at what PWC MoneyTree has on First Round Capital

    image

compared to what Crunchbase has on First Round Capital for Q309.

    image

The differences that I think are incorrect on PWC’s part are that (1) GumGum is missing, (2) CoTweet is classified as Early Stage instead of Seed, (3) BigDeal is missing, (4) DNAnexus is missing (although it looks like it might have happened in Q2 even though it was widely reported in August), (5) Continuity Engine is classified as Early Stage instead of Seed, (6) ClickEquations is missing, (7) Sofa Labs shows up twice, and (8) Sofa Labs is classified as Early Stage instead of Seed.  Now Crunchbase is missing Project Fair Bid (even though they reported on it) so they aren’t perfect, but at the minimum the misclassification between Seed and Early Stage is dramatic.  Just for grins I looked these up in Dow Jones VentureSource and their data is closer to CrunchBase’s (especially the Round Type), but there are still differences.

Ever since I started investing in 1994 I’ve heard people spouting VC investment statistics to justify different viewpoints.  I’ve always felt this was a “garbage in / garbage out” phenomenon.  While there are some academics that do rigorous work around this (and understand the difference in importance between averages, medians, and er – statistically significant results), they are few and far between.  And – most of the data people actually use and discuss is stuff like the PWC Moneytree Report.

I keep fantasizing that this madness will stop, but I doubt it will.  In the mean time, I think I’ll go for an average run at a median pace.

  • Fox, Time Warner Cable agree to deal: Your NFL football is safe!

    c250

Fox an Time Warner Cable struck a deal last night that prevented the unthinkable: no NFL football (and Fox News, and Fox Soccer Channel, etc.) for millions of Americans in the some of the biggest TV markets in America, like New York City and Los Angeles! The terms of the deal weren’t announced, but at last check-in, Time Warner Cable was prepared to give Fox between 20 and 30 cents per subscriber (Fox was asking for $1 per subscriber). You knew the deal was going to happen, didn’t you?

So yeah, Fox had threatened to pull the many channels it owns off Time Warner Cable systems, the biggest ones being New York City, Los Angeles, and Dallas. Fox, looking to make up for the loss of revenue it has seen for a variety of reasons, including a downturn in ad revenue, was looking to bully Time Warner Cable into paying $1 per subscriber in order to have Fox-owned stations on its systems.

Other providers had taken advantage of the mess. Dish Network had been offering next-day installation to people in the affected Time Warner Cable market. (Though let’s face it: it would be a pain in the ass to convince the average New York City landlord to install a dish.)

The beauty is that there may well have been a riot had tomorrow’s NFL games not aired in the affected markets. The lesson is, don’t mess with people’s NFL.

    All in all, crisis averted.

    Travis Pastrana - Record Mundial

  • Top 10 Mind Hacks for Making Your Resolutions Stick

Nothing but the strength of your convictions can keep a self-improvement promise going for at least 365 days. You can, however, boost your chance at success and outwit your worst habits with some motivational devices and clever thinking.

Image from Monina Velarde’s New Year’s Resolution Generator.

    10. Roll 12 habits into one resolution

Blogger John Richardson believes in the power of habits, the kind that your mind can subconsciously stick to after 21 days of reinforcement. Rather than make some over-reaching resolution like “Be better about spending,” he crafted 12 different specific micro-habits to act upon in 2006, one for each month. The original link is lost to a WordPress re-design and site migration, it appears, but as Gina noted, by making those resolutions specific and measurable—drinking two quarts of water per day instead of “drink more water”—you can also track them, as covered below, and combine them into one big life-improving resolution.

    9. Distract yourself at the moment of temptation

It seems cruel, but researchers have learned a lot from tempting kids with an immediate sugary treat versus a more substantial treat if they wait it out. What did the kids who successfully avoided eating marshmallows right away have in common? According to NPR’s story on The Marshmallow Test, they distracted themselves whenever the lure of the fluffy white puffs became too strong—twirling their hair, counting to some random number, singing a song. Anything that got their mind off what it was consciously trying to avoid worked better than just torturing themselves over it, and we adults can probably learn a thing or two from those exercises. What better reason, really, to keep an engaging, entertaining game handy on your cellphone for immediate playing whenever temptation strikes? (Original post)

    8. Create a reminder network

Before an action you want to do every day becomes a real habit, something you do without thinking and mindlessly benefit from, it requires a lot of reminders and dragging yourself to do it. To get there, learning trainer Dr. Stephanie Burns suggests setting up external triggers and reminders. Not just sticky notes on the bathroom mirror (though those can help), but a whole multimedia onslaught of conscious-mind triggers: clock alarms, devoted friends who call at the same time every day, rubber bands, locks on the cupboard containing the too-hard-to-resist treats, and so forth. Once you get use to doing the same thing, in the same place, in the same surroundings, you’ll have the efficiency of a self-winding wristwatch. Until then, it takes a stage director’s skill to set up an entire world of nag-y reminders. Photo by Haundreis. (Original post)

    7. Pick only one actual resolution

The part of your brain that willpower stems from, the prefrontal cortex, is just behind your forehead. Like any other tissue in your body, it has its limitations, and overloading it with short-term memory tasks, stress management, and five or six different day-to-day resolutions is just too much. It’s best explained in the scientific studies highlighted by the Wall Street Journal, in a piece on the science behind failed resolutions:

In a 2002 experiment, led by Mark Muraven at the University at Albany, a group of male subjects was asked to not think about a white elephant for five minutes while writing down their thoughts. That turns out to be a rather difficult mental challenge, akin to staying focused on a tedious project at work. (A control group was given a few simple arithmetic problems to solve.) Then, Mr. Muraven had the subjects take a beer taste test, although he warned them that their next task involved driving a car. Sure enough, people in the white elephant group drank significantly more beer than people in the control group, which suggests that they had a harder time not indulging in alcohol.

… When we ask the brain to suddenly stop eating its favorite foods and focus more at work and pay off the Visa…we’re probably asking for too much.

Yep—one seriously taxing resolution is the probably the most you should fight for, given that your brain is constantly failing in an attempt to fight off drunken white elephants trying to get into your thoughts. Or something along those lines—we forgot already.

    6. Use a timer

This year, you’ve sworn to anyone who’ll listen that your office will stay clean. All it really takes, you figure, is about five to ten minutes of pick-up every day, if that. Those minutes aren’t coming on an engraved invitation every day, though—you have to carve them out yourself. Do what a self-made millionaire mom (original link since removed), a finance blogger, and productive dude Merlin Mann do: set a timer and just crank on it. Nothing is all that awful if you know you can wander away from it in 10 minutes, and there’s something about the no-nonsense nature of a physical kitchen-style timer or stopwatch that makes it harder to ignore than a little screen icon. Get good at doing whatever you’re doing, and you eventually might not even need it.

    5. Utilize public shame

Notable funny guy and Deadspin blogger Drew Magary has to lose 50 pounds to deal with back pain. How’s he getting there? Eating and drinking less, actually, but also through posting his weight every day in what he’s calling the Twitter Public Humiliation Diet. Maybe his followers aren’t calling him out every single day that he doesn’t make progress, but having committed to publicly fessing up to his weight is more direct and persuasive than a background thought about long-term health. Geek singer/songwriter Jonathan Coulton took on a similar task with his Thing A Week project, knowing that if his fans were waiting for new content every week and he didn’t deliver, it’d be humiliating on a wider scale than just missing a personal deadline. Don’t have a fanbase waiting to see you fall? Try telling your mom, or your wife, or the best friend who’s not afraid to give you crap, about this new thing you’re doing—you will not want to let them down. (It’s part of how Adam motivated himself to run a marathon in 2006.) Photo by a2gemma.

    4. Make it into a geeky data game

The downward-sloping curve of your weight, the upward-sloping curve of your savings—for some folks, visual cues to success are understandably addictive and motivating. Lifehacker alumnus Kyle Pott used personal finance site Mint.com to get control of his fancy coffee spending, and Gina showed us how graphing your life with webapps can tame big stuff like budgets and small stuff like soda addictions.

    3. Conquer huge backlogs with a DMZ or half-life approach

Want to clear out your inbox for the new year and keep it that way? Good idea, but what about the 1,438 items that are staring at you, just daring you to try and “process” them? Do what an out-of-time college kid does when the parents are visiting—create a “DMZ” space (demilitarized zone), and shove it all in there, heading back to it when you need to grab something or have the proper time set aside to really crank on replies/deletions/archiving. Can’t bear the thought of misplacing a crucial message? Follow Jason Clarke’s Inbox 0.5 approach, shelving half of your emails today, another half tomorrow, and so on, until you’ve stashed and sorted all your mail in its proper place without declaring email bankruptcy.

    2. Set up a scheduled review

It’s all too easy to lose track of your goals if you have no idea how much you’ve succeeded, or slipped, as time goes by. The weekly review method that’s an essential piece of the Getting Things Done methodology is meant for tracking productivity goals, but getting into the weekly review habit is a good idea for any resolution you make. If you prefer a more intense, and far more old-school approach, try Benjamin Franklin’s personal daily goal tracker, which can be modified to fit your non-18th-century needs. (Original post: Benjamin Franklin).

    1. Think progress, not perfection

You are not Vulcan, Cylon, or any other science fiction race that has perfect, programmatic willpower. You are human, and you will, inevitably, give into your cravings, whether on special occasions or when faced with gourmet tiramisu. When you do, don’t consider your resolution failed, but consider that any massive change will have setbacks and mistakes. As they say, moderation in all things—including moderation. If food is your particular vice, we’ve found foodie and Lifehacker reader Sally’s thoughts on low-fat eating to be inspiring. It’s not what you eat, but the spirit in which you eat it. Same goes for most anything you promise yourself, really. Photo by cherryjet. (Original post).

What mental notes, tricks, or other hacks have you utilized in getting yourself to stick to something that’s better for you? We can all use some inspiring advice and success stories in the comments—quickly, please, before the frappuccino urge sets in.

  • Palm’s WebOS Now Has 1,000 Apps. Only 99,000 To Go To Catch Up To Apple.

Palm’s App Store has reached a milestone. According to WebOS School, Palm now offers 1000 apps to its mobile users on its App Catalog. Of course, this number has to be taken with a grain of salt. Apple’s App Store has over 100,000 apps and the Android market has over 16,000 apps, making Palm’s achievement a little less thrilling.

The relatively small amount of apps for Palm isn’t surprising; Palm has had a lag in adding apps to its store for some time now and has not been able to match the speed or breadth of Apple’s App ecosystem. But it’s safe to assume that Palm may be adding apps more quickly now, after the company announced an easier approval process for apps and the ability to allow developers to fully distribute their apps via the web. What this means is that developers can simply submit their apps to Palm, and Palm will return to them a URL that they can then blog, tweet, do whatever they want to share it. When a person then clicks on that URL they can easily install the app, bypassing any kind of store. Palm realizes that it has to play nice with developers in order to get them to build on top of its software.

Will the App Catalog ever catch up to Apple’s App Store? Probably not, but Palm’s strategy could definitely still make the mobile device company a player in the mobile device world.

Here’s a list of the most downloaded apps from Palm’s App Catalog (they are all free) and a breakdown by type of app:

O Judiciário a serviço do DF é federal.

  • High Numbers-Basal?

Hi all and Happy New Year!

Around a week ago I experienced some unusually high numbers which were primarily bedtime, fasting and my dinner post prandial. Since my Lantus was on its 21st day the first thing I decided to do was start a new one. But I have been noticing my dinner pp and my bedtime have been a bit higher than I like (nothing like this) for awhile so I read over the threads and decided to try splitting my Lantus which I’d been taking at bedtime (10 units) into bedtime and morning, in case it wasn’t lasting the full 24 hours. Long story short after I started the new Lantus the numbers came down from the extreme highs (a 190 and a 280!) but continue to run high. Thinking maybe that as a LADA I am finally experiencing end of insulin production (I’ve been diagnosed 2.5 years), I have been gradually increasing the dose and as of today am at 7 morning and 6 bedtime, not very much I know, but 13 is a significant percent over 10.

My post prandials are generally ok; except when I’ve been high before the meal (I try and add an extra correction unit). It’s my fasting, before meals and bedtime. Last night my bedtime was 177 and my fasting 174. The fasting is highly unusual for me prior to this week. I had normally run under 100 and was concerned because I’d been seeing some numbers between 100 and 120.

So my question is should I just assume my basal needs are increasing and keep increasing by a unit morning and night until it gets under control? The other possibility is that the new box of insulin I opened is not potent. (It wasn’t still frozen when it arrived). I could call Medco and ask for a replacement. But that seems like it would be a coincidence that this rise in numbers started with a pen from the previous box! Oh yeah and I’m not sick, though I do feel like I’ve been fighting a cold. (I have a weird immune system where I can feel that way for weeks before it goes away or I just succumb. But I’ve never seen any rise in numbers like this even when I actually HAD a cold.)
Thanks in advance for any thoughts!
    Zoe
