  • Liquid Image outs Summit Series Snow Camera goggles ahead of CES

    Liquid Image has just announced new camera-equipped ski masks, swimming goggles and scuba masks, just in time for them to be unveiled at CES 2010. The Summit Series Snow Camera Goggle 335 boasts a 5MP still camera capable of shooting D1 720 x 480 resolution video at 30 frames per second with audio. It’s got 16MB of built-in flash memory, expandable to 16GB via its microSD / SDHC slot. Other features include large buttons on the side of the goggles which are easy to press while wearing gloves and and a light inside the goggles which indicates when recording. The goggles are estimated to get about 2,200 still images or over 2 hours of video per charge on their lithium ion battery. Liquid Image expects to ship the Summit Series goggles in the summer of 2010, with a price of $149. Full press release is after the break

    The claims are further bolstered by a friend of Jennifer’s, who insist the former lovers are busily looking for the perfect script for their big screen debut.

  • The Truth About Postpartum Depression

    Tom Cruise and Brooke Shields are currently engaging in a word war against each other because of a type of depression, called postpartum depression. Cruise’s and Brooke’s debacle started when Tom Cruise openly disapproved of Brooke Shield’s personal choice of opting to take prescribed medicines to cure her postpartum depression, when he guested at the Today Show. According to Cruise, who is a popular devotee of Scientology (who believes that we can be cured through natural means and that taking medicine is doing our body harm), Brooke Shields should have instead, opted to cure her postpartum depression by doing healthy exercises. Adding that a lot of people have been misinformed about depression and how to actually cure this common illness.

    But what is postpartum depression really? We’ve heard about it often enough, yet are we really sure that we know enough about it for us to actually understand this illness in order for us to help ourselves as well as others? Being pregnant should really be a source of joy for everyone, especially the mother to be, who for nine months, will actually have living being grow from inside of her. Unfortunately, there is another side to this joyous occasion, being pregnant means that you and your body will have to get used to some adjustments for you to have a safe pregnancy. Smoking, alcohol, strenuous activities as well as stress should be avoided at all cost. A healthy baby means having a healthy mother as well. But given that you have been able to successfully avoided all these bad habits for your baby to be, childbirth is a whole different thing, as much as we may try to avoid it, there are still some unfortunate cases wherein the mother’s as well as the baby’s life might be in danger.

    But there’s actually more, postpartum depression actually happens after childbirth. Although it’s quite common and a lot of women have learned to how to deal with it as well as successfully treat it (like Brooke Shields), it is still quite avoidable. Postpartum depression is actually a lot like depression, but only new moms are the possible victims of this illness. There are actually a lot possible reasons why postpartum depression occurs:

    Childbirth as we all know is not as easy as pie, actual physical stress from giving birth is one of the main reasons why postpartum depression occurs. Next postpartum depression trigger is massive changes is hormonal levels. A lot of moms-to-be who were hesitant about bearing a child are also more susceptible to postpartum depression, those who are not ready to be a mother yet are more easily to get depressed as opposed to happy and excited moms-to-be.

    When postpartum depression happens, it really is best to go to the doctor immediately. Aside from obviously having ill-effects for the new mother, postpartum depression can prove to be harmful to the child as well. New mothers who are suffering from postpartum depression may be harboring ill feelings toward their children. Their are actually some cases of murder wherein postpartum depression has been cited as the reason. Mothers who suffer from postpartum depression may blame their child for their weight gain, thus feeling like they’ve become less attractive and unloved. It is really best to consult a reputable cognitive behavior therapist to take care of your postpartum woes, your therapist may prescribe medications to help cure postpartum depression as well as therapy sessions to help relieve whatever pent emotions that you may have.

Quem conhece a região, sabe que ela está localizada/esprimida exatamente entre a serra e o mar, quase sem locais planos, e onde chove muito e forte. Muitos bairros surgiram de forma desordenada e sem nenhum planejamento. Soma-se a isso um excesso de construções irregulares. As maiores vítimas ao longo desse tempo foram a floresta e seus rios, que sofreram com a ação direta do Homem.
    Isto foi uma fatalidade ou já era algo esperado? Como deveria ser o urbanismo nessas regiões? Qual é o papel da Prefeitura? O que fazer para que isto não ocorra novamente?

  • The Old Railway Station | Skopje.Macedonia

    The building of the Old Railway station was designed and built in the period 1938 -1940 by the Serbian architect Gavrilovic. During the 1963 earthquake it was partly damaged, and today what remains of it represents a monument to that catastrophe of the city. Since 1970 it has become the Museum of the City of Skopje which exists as of 1949. It was adapted to a museum and now it has 4000 m2 out of which 2500 m2 are planned for the permanent exhibition (which is now being set up) and 800 m2 are used as a gallery for temporary exhibitions.

    The clock on this old train station stopped at 5:17 am since the morning of 26 July 1963, when this piece of the grand modernist station of Skopje was one of the few parts of the city that remained standing after a massive earthquake crushed the city. It measured 6.1 on the Richter scale, killed nearly two thousand people, and left over a hundred thousand homeless after destroying about 80% of the city. It’s a reminder of a tragic moment in Skopje’s history.

    We went on without the car, its driver and our cook, who stayed to
    wait for help to arrive from Cairo.
    Fortunately we had satellite phones so the situation was well under control and help
    was soon sent from Cairo.
    In the meantime, the head driver did the cooking and he was excellent!

    If you were to look for irony this would be the place to find it.
    In the Second World War the Long Range Desert Group parked up a set of
    vehicles at Three Castles as a reserve, and they were found by Laszlo Almasy.
    The Hungarian Almasy (used loosely to form the character of “The English Patient”)
    was working for the Axis forces and poured fine desert sand into the fuel tanks. He ensured that
    different quantities were added so that the vehicles broke down at different
    places along their journey. He knew the founder of the LRDG,
    Ralph Bagnold, very well, because they were friends before the war.
    A fascinating part of the history of both the Western Desert and the Second World War.

  • Plethora of new HP laptops, desktops leak ahead of CES

    Holy smokes! A ton of unannounced HP laptops and desktops just came across our desk, in addition to those Envy models we saw just a few days back. Ahead of what we presume will be their formal announcement next week right around CES, we’ve got some details on 14 new models — some more interesting than others. Now, before you get too excited, we don’t have full specs on any of these, but we do have pricing information, and here are some highlights: the 14-inch HP Pavilion dv4i, a Windows 7 laptop with a flush display and fingerprint reader that should run about $785. Up next is the 10-inch Mini 210 HD Edition, which will come in red, black, silver and blue, boast Intel’s brand new Pine Trail platform (a 1.66GHz N450 CPU), plus GMA 3150 graphics. Another goodie here is that this one is expected to ship with Broadcom’s Crystal HD video playback chip. The Mini 210 HD is expected to cost around $330. Logic Buy (the point of origin for all this info) is reporting that these models should ship on or around January 7th, though keep in mind that all of this information is extremely unofficial, so don’t blame us if it all changes.   • Avoiding Toxoplasmosis

    If you’re a pregnant cat owner, you don’t necessarily have to get rid of Mr. Fluffy! Simple precautions will allow you to keep your feline friend when pregnant.

    In fact, CDC says that you’re more likely to get toxoplasmosis from gardening or eating undercooked meat than from pet cats.

    The infection known as toxoplasmosis is caused by the parasite Toxoplasma gondii. Even though most women infected during pregnancy will have no symptoms, the infection can cause big problems like miscarriage or premature birth. Infected infants are likely to develop severe symptoms later in life, including loss of vision and hearing, mental retardation and death.

    The parasite is carried by some cats and is passed in their feces. Indoor-only cats who are fed cooked or commercial food are much less likely to carry the parasite. Yet, it’s important to note that cats infected with Toxoplasma gondii very rarely show any symptoms. Toxoplasmosis is usually only harmful to pregnant women and people who are immunodeficient.

    According to Cornell University College of Vet Medicine, infected cats only shed Toxoplasma gondii a few days in their entire life, so the chance of human exposure is small. If you’re curious about how the organism works in cats, visit Cornell’s page on Toxoplasmosis in Cats.

    Though the risk of exposure is small, it’s not zero. Pregnant women should take precautions against exposure to the organism that causes toxoplasmosis.

    If you’re pregnant:

    • Avoid contact with stray cats.
    • Have someone else clean the cat’s litter box or wear gloves and wash hands carefully after you finish.
    • Don’t feed your pet cat raw or undercooked food.
    • Keep your cat indoors.
    • Resist adopting a cat that has lived outside or has been fed raw food.
    • Wear gloves when gardening.
    • When preparing meat, clean all food prep surfaces and cook meat to the recommended internal temp.
    • Avoid drinking unpasteurized milk.
    • Cover sandboxes in your yard.

  • Motoring Fines to Rise by £15 for Victim’s Surcharge

    ‘Currently the ‘Victims’ Surcharge’ is
    only handed out with more serious fines from the courts, but it will be
    added to fixed penalty tickets for offences such as speeding and other
    parking misdemeanours, according to a Parliamentary answer.

    Ministers said that they plan to extend
    the victim surcharge to fixed-penalty notices and ‘road traffic
    offences’, an idea first considered by Jack Straw, the Justice
    Secretary in April last year. This would mean the minimum £60
    fine for speeding would rise to £75.’

    this morning that cap and trade not only won’t reduce emissions, it may
    actually increase them:

    The problem is that the emissions just
    go someplace else. That’s what happened after Kyoto, and
    that’s what would happen again, if—as long as fossil fuels
    are the cheapest energy, they will be burned someplace. You know, the
    Europeans thought they actually reduced their emissions after Kyoto,
    but what happened was the products that had been made in their
    countries began to be made in other countries, which were burning the
    cheapest form of fossil fuel, so the total emissions actually
    increased…’

  • Full-Body Scanners to Fry Travelers With Radiation

    ‘Virtually all passengers and airline
    crews who pass through airport screening checkpoints in the U.S. may
    soon be forced to submit to compulsory, whole-body X-ray exposure. Some
    fliers could be “fried” several times in one day. Frequent
    fliers could get hit hundreds of times each year. Pregnant women,
    infants, the chronically ill and immune suppressed would get the rays.

    Grateful herds of traveling livestock,
    prodded by TSA drovers through federally-funded “nuke
    chutes,” are expected to believe Hollowell’s scientifically
    unsupported assertion that ionizing radiation delivered via backscatter
    will be “about the same as sunshine”.’
