  • Joint Mobility: Reader Question Roundup

QuestionsI got a ton of feedback from my series on joint mobility. As comprehensive as I tried to be in my joint mobility series, I couldn’t possibly address every single malady a person might have. In the comment sections, readers discussed their own specific issues with joint mobility or joint pain, and while I hope my general recommendations for overall mobility helped, more targeted, specific advice is needed for targeted, specific issues. I want to help, so here are my answers to some of your questions. Add your own thoughts in the comment board to participate. Thanks, everyone!

    Hips

I’m recovering from a hip fracture suffered 18 months ago. Long story short, angulated fix, osteoporosis and post-surgery dvt. I’m trying very hard to regain my earlier active life. I need something gentler to start with. Any thoughts on exercises or anyone with a similar situation willing to share their recovery strategy?

Exercise after deep vein thrombosis is a tricky subject. Most doctors will tell you to avoid exercise, especially strenuous exercise. Anecdotal accounts from places like the CrossFit forums and other exercise communities report success with post-DVT exercise – as long as they avoid pain (and swelling, and anything symptomatic of more DVT). This study (membership required for access) seems to suggest that post-DVT exercise isn’t harmful, and it may even be beneficial to patients looking to resume pre-DVT activity levels. “The results suggested that higher physical activity levels at 1 month may be protective against worsening of the PTS score over the subsequent 3 months.” I wish I could be more specific with exercise recommendations, but avoiding pain is always a good place to start. Good luck!

I have very “tight” hip flexors. Every time I do these exercises (even just the front-to-back swings), I end up with intense pain from my hip to about halfway down my quad. It hurts for several days. Do I work through it?

Sounds like IT band pain. Most IT band syndrome manifests as knee pain, but the band itself extends up to the hip, and if you have tight hip flexors, the pain will reside in the hips and outer thighs. If I were you, I’d focus on hip flexor stretches and IT band foam rolling. For the stretches, try doing deep lunges while letting the hips drop as low as is comfortable (pain-free).

    Thoracic Spine

This may sound like a dumb question but- when doing the initial mobility test, does it matter where the pain is? When I do the test, I feel some discomfort but mostly pain in upper arms, especially when my wrists get close to touching the ground.

Yep. That’s a sign of thoracic immobility. Remember, our parts are interconnected and highly interdependent. Immobility in one area manifests as pain in another.

My shoulder width is slightly over 45cm. The foam rollers apparently comes in either 45 or 90 cm length. 90 is just unpractical long. Is 45cm too short for me?

PS: I must say that 45cm seem like a really stupid size…

Spring for the larger size. Move some furniture if you have to. And I agree: 45 cm is a pretty silly size.

    Wrist and Ankles

If we’re supposed to be landing with a dorsiflexed ankle during sprinting aren’t we landing with our heels, promoting shock up the bones into the joints? Or is there something more subtle to the form that I’m missing?

Take shorter strides. In barefoot running, you can land dorsiflexed and forefoot first as long as you take shorter strides. Avoid the mindset of longer strides being superior. Remember: running and sprinting aren’t composed of miniature leaps with outstretched legs. You’re pulling yourself along with compact movements.

Thanks Mark, I hope your post tomorrow addresses ankles that have been twisted. I have had some bad ankle twists in the past few years that have left me with poor ankle mobility and prone to more twists.

    and

Mark-or anyone else-do you have any ideas? It’s unstable on full heel lifts compared to the left ankle-wobbles in and out-yet the left ankle is the one that I am prone to turning. I’ve done myriad versions of heel lifts, but I don’t think it focuses on the right part. Am I hopeless?

How’s your one-footed balance? Are you still wearing shoes, especially big heavy clunky ones? Work on closed-eye, single foot balance (with both feet, not just the injured one). Do it in bare feet. Try not to use your flailing arms and body weight to maintain balance; instead, focus on “grasping” the ground with your feet and activating your lower leg and foot muscles. Stabilize yourself. Keep doing this until it’s second nature, and your improved foot and ankle proprioception will help prevent any future sprains. Also – learn to function barefoot and stop taping up your ankles (if that’s what you’re doing).

    Shoulders

My husband has been dealing with Adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder) in both of his shoulders for almost a year now…. But, my husband is also diabetic which seems to play some roll in it but we’re not sure what….

I know a bit. I know that adhesive capsulitis incidence is elevated in diabetic patients. Inflammation also plays a big role in its development. Is your husband taking fish oil? I’d consider upping the dose to around 5-6g per day to reduce inflammation. Maybe add in some glucosamine, chondroitin, and MSM supplements (or drink your bone broth and eat your tendons). Avoid stress, and do what he needs to do to get plenty of sleep. Eat an anti-inflammatory diet – drop all grains, excessive starches, vegetable oils, and sugar. Another risk factor for adhesive capsulitis is the presence of autoimmune disease, so you’ll definitely want to avoid grains, legumes, and anything containing high levels of lectins or gluten. Anything that can increase intestinal permeability and start the autoimmune chain reaction is to be avoided. Hopefully that will help speed the physical therapy process along. Good luck!

how about everytime u do a pull up or sit up and one of your shoulders makes a popping sound over and over like something in my socket is moving? it doesnt hurt at all, but it feels weird and puts me off doing more reps than i want to.

I’ll direct all cracking and popping questions to Steven Low’s excellent article at Eat. Move. Improve.: “Cracking and Popping and Clicking, Oh My!

I have trouble with my arm going numb when my arm is forward. I have front shoulder pain and know that I have a pinched nerve between my 5th & 6th verebrae. I personal train 3 times a week & other strenuous exercises the rest of the week. This shoulder pain is inhibiting me from my full potential as an athlete. looking forward to your articles

C’mon, man! Your arm is going numb on a regular basis, you have a confirmed pinched nerve, your shoulder hurts, and you’re still engaging in strenuous exercise all week long? Take a full week off. Rest, ice, and start taking fish oil if you haven’t already. Explore your range of motion (without weights) and move on from there. Do the shoulder mobility and stability drills, and check your posture. Do you slump forward at the shoulders? Do you sit at a desk or hunch over a laptop? Fix that before you start working out again or you’ll truly risk inhibiting your full athletic potential. Good luck, and don’t be afraid to rest!

Mark, thank you! I have messed up my right shoulder twice now and have sort of become gun shy with weights. I stopped wide angle pull ups and military press because my rhomboid section closest to my spine locks up and twitches. I have been doing a bunch more power yoga to try to loosen it, but even that hurts sometimes. I can’t figure out if it’s my AC joint or rotator cuff that clicks. Do you have any suggestions as to what exercises I could do to help loosen it up?

When you do pull-ups, are you engaging your scapular retraction, or are you going kyphotic and letting your shoulders slump forward? Do the former and avoid the latter. When doing pull-ups, visualize your elbows slamming against your ribcage; this will help you engage your back and keep your scapulas retracted. Avoid jerking movements (like kipping pull-ups), which can throw your joints out of balance if you’re not careful or if you’re already lacking in mobility/stability. Instead, work on slower, controlled, more deliberate lifting for the time being.

I hope these answers helped, and if you’ve got any more feel free to hit up the comment section!

  • More Companies Looking To Cash In On So-Called ‘Cyber War’; Press Buys Questionable Claims

We’ve been discussing the manufactured buzz around the concept of a “cyberwar,” despite the lack of any real evidence of anything beyond some typical espionage efforts with a bit of vandalism thrown in for color. However, for the companies building up the buzz, it’s proving to be quite profitable, and it appears others are rushing to get in on the gravy train — and they’re using the unquestioning press to push the claim along. Take, for example, this Reuters article, that is all about how British aerospace/defense contractor giant BAE is now trying to cash in on the US government’s new obsession with “cyberwar.” The article opens in a cinematic fashion:

Threats to sensitive computer networks lurk everywhere and with a few mouse clicks, organized criminals and hackers could shut down vital networks that run the U.S. government, industry and military.

Source for that? None. Details? None. Evidence? None. Explanation for why vital networks that run the U.S. government and military are connected to the open internet? None. Explanation for why if all it takes is a few mouse clicks, no one has actually taken down these networks yet? None. In fact, that opening is never revisited or explained. Instead, it’s taken for granted along with what’s effectively a press release for BAE’s new “cyber center” in (of course) Washington DC. If this keeps up, perhaps Techdirt will need to open a “cyberwar” division just to cash in on this hype.

  • Chain-smoker Toddler Burns 40 Sticks Daily

Ardi Rizal, a 2-year-old Indonesian boy may not even know what YouTube is, yet his clip puffing a cigarette stick picks up thousands of viewers, and critiques too. Although strangers believe that this toddler faces a grave health risk, his parents never see it that way.

They even think that Ardi is healthy when he is overweight for going past 25 kilograms that he cannot run like kids of his age.

Mohammed, a fishmonger in the village of Musi Banyuasin gave his son Ardi his first cigarette-smoking experience when the boy is only 18 months. Right now they are spending an average of US$5 to supply him around 40 sticks of cigarette daily.

Both of Ardi’s parents prefer to tolerate his addiction rather than finding another way to control his childhood tantrums when he craves for cigarette. His mother, Diana describes how little Ardi would even bang his head onto the wall until he is given his puff stuff.

Britain’s Sun Newspaper is the first to show the video on their website which apparently reflects a trend in Indonesia. Based on the recent data shown by the Central Statistics Agency, about 25 percent of Indonesians aged 3 to 15 year-old has smoked cigarettes, while in 2004, there’s 2.8 percent of 5 to 9 year-old who lit up to puff.

  • Hugh Hendry’s Slams Economist Jeffrey Sachs: I Would Recommend You Stop Going Skiing And Panic

    hendry-sachs

The European banking system is in crisis, says Hendry.

    “I would recommend you panic.”

The hedge fund manager of Eclectica Management went on BBC Newsnight last night to play pessimist against Jeffrey Sachs, an economist from Columbia University.

Of course the two get into a fight. It’s awesome.

At first Hendry is talking quietly and his manner is worryingly subdued but wait just a minute. He starts going after Sachs at 2:38.

“When you bring on a professor and when you bring on a politician, they are unaccountable. Jeffrey’s wrong, you know what? He’ll survive and tenure. I’m wrong, I go bankrupt.”

Then Jeffrey defends himself a little bit, says no one should jump to the conclusion that all is lost, and Hendry literally jumps on him. (4:50)

“I don’t know,” says Hendry, “because, was Jeffrey skiing two months ago? I was working, Gillian (Tett, who was also on the show) was working. So we can tell you about the real world.”

It’s so offensive that the host has to jump in and say, “Now that’s just a low blow.”

(Meanwhile, Gillian Tett is loving this, grinning from ear to ear.)

Then Jeffrey, who doesn’t want to let some other guy fight his fight for him, warns Hendry:

“Please watch your language, it’s just ridiculous. Watch your rhetoric a little bit.”

Seriously, says Hendry. It’s time to worry. Panic.

“Banks today are refusing to lend to each other. Bank share prices are collapsing. We have no ability to gauge the credit-worthiness of the banking system.”

“I say, let’s purge this system of its rottenness,” recommends Hendry. “Let’s take on a recession. It’s going to be tough. People are going to lose their jobs.”

“The banking sector is responsible for gross folly,” he says. The solution is just, “Don’t pay them. Don’t reward folly.”

“We can spread this over 20 years or we can get rid of it over 3 years… You make a mistake, you pay for it.”

Of course remember that Hendry is shorting the crap out of Greece and the European banking crisis. He’s a big proponent of speculation and shorting, so he hates bailouts and would love massive failure.

  • Toll privatization scheme in Michigan HB 4961 amounts to a tax paid directly to private corporations, without representation

Via Prison Planet.com » Prison Planet

    QBit.cc
    Thursday, May 27, 2010

This bill has passed the house, 56-51 and is going to the Senate.

Michigan House Bill 4961 [pdf] boils down to Taxation without Representationturning the State’s right to levy taxes over to private international corporations, essentially ceding sovereignty over critial infrastructure.  The corporations will be able to levy highway tolls without oversight or regulation on US citizens, should this bill pass.

At an absolute minimum it allows the creation of a single high occupancy toll lane.   After the next repaving of an entire highway, tolls can be collected on all lanes.

Now that the financial elite have tanked our economy, they’re trying to buy up our infrastructure and property using their international corporations that operate above the law.

Some important exerpts from the bill:

… to abolish the office of state  highway commissioner and the commissioner’s advisory board and to transfer their powers and duties…

TO PROVIDE FOR PUBLIC-PRIVATE  TRANSPORTATION FACILITIES; TO AUTHORIZE PUBLIC-PRIVATE AGREEMENTS RELATING TO … TOLLING, OPERATING, OR  MAINTAINING A PUBLIC-PRIVATE TRANSPORTATION FACILITY

[allow private corporation to tax the use of public “transportation facilities” … but what constitutes a transportation facility?]

“TRANSPORTATION FACILITY” MEANS ANY NEW OR EXISTING  HIGHWAY, ROAD, BRIDGE, TUNNEL, OVERPASS, RAMP, INTERCHANGE, FERRY,  AIRPORT, VEHICLE PARKING FACILITY, VEHICLE TRANSPORTATION FACILITY,  PORT FACILITY, LOCKS FACILITY, RAIL FACILITY, INTERMODAL OR OTHER  PUBLIC TRANSIT FACILITY, OR ANY OTHER EQUIPMENT, ROLLING STOCK,  SITE, OR FACILITY USED IN THE TRANSPORTATION OF PERSONS, GOODS,  SUBSTANCES, VEHICLES, …

    [Wait for it, wait ….]

INFORMATION, OR MATTER OF ANY KIND

[data cables are included in “transportation facilities?!”  This bill would allow sale and private taxation of network (internet/data) infrastructure as a “transportation facility” based on “congestion.”  Data cables are already leased by big cable/telcos so what does this mean for them?]

Toll privatization scheme in Michigan HB 4961 amounts to a tax paid directly to private corporations, without representation 130510banner3

… INCLUDING THE SALE OF REVENUE BONDS …

[turn the business holdings into a fiat financial market; enable fractional lending based on expected future revenue, destabilizing the business]

“INSTRUMENTALITY OF GOVERNMENT” MEANS A LEGAL PUBLIC  ENTITY CREATED OR EMPOWERED TO CARRY OUT FUNCTIONS COMMONLY CARRIED  OUT BY UNITS OF GOVERNMENT

THE AGREEMENT SHALL PROVIDE THAT THE OWNERSHIP  OF A TRANSPORTATION FACILITY WITHIN THIS STATE SHALL BE VESTED IN  AN INSTRUMENTALITY OF GOVERNMENT AND THAT TITLE TO THE  TRANSPORTATION FACILITY SHALL NOT BE ENCUMBERED

[the corporation will have complete “unencumbered” control]

NO PROVISION OF A  PUBLIC-PRIVATE AGREEMENT SHALL ALLOW THE PUBLIC TO BE DEPRIVED OF  THE USE AND BENEFIT OF A TRANSPORTATION FACILITY EXCEPT AS  NECESSARY TO IMPLEMENT TOLLS OR OTHER CHARGES

[the corporation has the authority to deny access if you don’t pay the toll]

A TOLL MAY BE  IMPOSED ON A HIGHWAY ONLY IF IMPOSED FOR THE USE OF NEW HIGHWAYS,  OR THE USE OF EXPANDED HIGHWAY CAPACITY BEYOND HIGHWAY CAPACITY IN  PLACE ON THE EFFECTIVE DATE OF THE AMENDATORY ACT THAT ADDED THIS  SECTION.

[tolls may be levied for any expansion or heavy traffic (?)]

TOLLS AND OTHER CHARGES IMPOSED FOR THE USE OF A  TRANSPORTATION FACILITY ARE NOT SUBJECT TO REGULATION BY ANY OTHER  GOVERNMENTAL AGENCY.

[the tolling will not be regulated by the government]

NOTHING IN THIS SECTION SHALL BE CONSTRUED TO  ALLOW THE CONVERSION OF ANY NONTOLL OR NONUSER-FEE LANES EXISTING  ON THE EFFECTIVE DATE … WITH THE EXCEPTION OF A HIGH-OCCUPANCY VEHICLE LANE THAT MAY BE OPERATED AS A HIGH-OCCUPANCY  TOLL LANE FOR VEHICLES NOT OTHERWISE MEETING THE REQUIREMENTS FOR  USE OF THAT LANE.

At a minimum, if this passes, the corporation(s) will create high occupancy toll lanes.  Initially this allows them to just take one lane and turn it into a private toll lane.  If we let this pass, how easy will it be to expand it to 2 “managed lanes,” or 3, or the whole highway?

When the highway needs repaving, will the private company dictate who gets the contracts? And how do we select which private company gets to take control in the first place? Well, anything goes according to this:

ANY COMPETITIVE SELECTION PROCESS THAT THE DEPARTMENT  DETERMINES TO BE APPROPRIATE OR REASONABLE …  USING A COMPETITIVE  SELECTION PROCESS WHEN TO THE EXTENT PRACTICABLE

    ….

INFORMATION SUBMITTED UNDER SUCH A  PROMISE OF CONFIDENTIALITY SHALL NOT BE SUBJECT TO DISCLOSURE UNDER  THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT

[The bidding process will be competative to the extent that the government determines is “reasonable,” but you’ll never know because whatever we say is “private negotiations” will be exempt from FOIA requests]

A newer version of the bill (pdf) has been released that is substantially the same but provides for “public hearings” to receive user input; amounting to no real oversight or accountability.

THE COMMISSION SHALL CONDUCT A PUBLIC HEARING AT LEAST ONCE EVERY 5 YEARS TO RECEIVE PUBLIC COMMENT AND INPUT WITH REGARD TO THEN EXISTING PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION FACILITIES ….

After the next repaving, all highway lanes can be turned into toll lanes.   Signing this bill will inevitably turn our Michigan highways into private revenue streams for multinational corporations, not to mention ports, rail, and network infrastructure.  This is infrastructure we’ve already paid to build, and need to maintain ourselves in order to sustain the local economy by hiring local workers and companies.

People from Michigan, it is absolutely critical that we reject this bill.  We can not let them hand our infrastructure over to international corporations as many other states have.  In the long run Michigan will lose on this deal in a big way.

They mean business and will do whatever is necessary including paying off our elected officials.  Call your representatives and let them know we’re watching!

    From MI Rep Paul Opsommer:

    OUT-OF-STATE MEDDLING WORSENS HB 4961

    May 24, 2010

State Rep. Paul Opsommer today criticized Canadian and Ohio officials for pushing legislation that would allow the Michigan Department of Transportation to toll virtually anywhere in Michigan.

“At the end of the day, whose law is this anyway?” asked Opsommer, R-Dewitt. “Canada’s understandable need to be part of border discussions is now being eclipsed by their off-base efforts to support the Ontario pension fund, and now we have resolutions being introduced involving the Ohio Legislature as well. If we pass laws in Michigan that give MDOT unilateral tolling power in our state it should be because that is what the Michigan Legislature feels is right, not because of pressure from other states or countries.”

Opsommer made his comments in response to a recent news story that officials in Ohio are advocating for their resolution SR 223 in support of the Detroit River International Crossing. The bill in Michigan that would allow for that, HB 4961, would also give new power to MDOT at the expense of the Legislature. HB 4961 is also criticized for allowing “instrumentalities of government” from other countries and states to enter into contracts that could potentially determine the tolling rates and eminent domain decisions taking place in Michigan.

“It has been a conscious decision by MDOT to wrap the DRIC bridge up into broad public-private partnership legislation that would not only allow for the DRIC but would cause the Legislature to give up its authority to statutorily authorize tolling anywhere else in the state,” Opsommer said. “I don’t know if this is because the governor wants to use the bill as leverage to keep Canada happy with the DRIC, or if she simply wants to have the unilateral ability to impose tolls on taxpayers with no other checks and balances, but either way it’s wrong.”

The Ambassador Bridge, Blue-Water Bridge and all other tolled facilities in Michigan received their tolling authority through stand alone bills authorized by the Legislature. Opsommer cited a recent letter from the attorney general’s office that concurs that MDOT currently only has the ability to toll where the Legislature has given its formal approval.

“Whether tolling is done directly by MDOT or a private contractor, you want someone who has been elected by the people determining where to use that tool,” Opsommer said. “In cases where it is being done by a private contractor who is using toll rates not just to break even but also to create profits, I would think you would want to keep voter accountability even more. If toll rates go unfairly through the roof, who are taxpayers supposed to turn too? The Legislature will be powerless at that point; it would actually be players from outside of the state who would have the final word.”

Opsommer also pointed to international pressure from Canada as having an unfair influence on the process.

“If it wasn’t for the fact that the main potential investor in all of this, the Ontario pension fund OMERS, was recently granted expanded powers by the Canadian government to provide investment management services I am not sure we would even be here,” Opsommer said. “We shouldn’t be making decisions on tolling Michigan taxpayers based off of the financial needs and a quest for high returns by a Canadian pension fund. The DRIC and HB 4961 should be treated as two entirely separate issues.”

The National Motorists Association has endorsed a substitute version of HB 4961 that would ensure the Michigan Legislature still retained its tolling authority over MDOT and other instrumentalities of government from outside of the state.

“It is essential to not pass any version which does not provide for specific legislative approval for any public-private partnership that will involve direct tolling for the users,” said Jim Walker of the National Motorist’s Association. “Should the H-6 unfortunately pass in the House, I hope the Senate will have the courage to fix this issue.”

  • Closed Loop Media Filters

    Automatic Backwash Control

The Electric H2O Closed Loop Filtration System (CL Filter) is a high-pressure media filter, constructed from epoxy-lined carbon steel and designed to remove suspended solids down to 10, 5 and 0.5 microns from closed loop heating and cooling systems. The system is designed to maximize filtration flow and minimize backwash time and volume. As the filtered particulates accumulate on the media bed, the pressure differential across the bed increases.

When a pre-determined set point is reached, the self-cleaning automatic citywater backwash cycle is initiated, after which filtration is resumed. The NEMA 4X control panel also incorporates a manual and timed override automatic backwash. Dual electric actuators and four two-way bronze ball valves prevent any closed loop system water loss during backwash.

Closed Loop Filter Sizing and Selection
Closed loop systems are not exposed to airborne contaminants and therefore have lower particulate concentrations than open systems. Filter sizing is based upon a fluid turnover rate of four times per day. The result is that the entire fluid volume in the system is filtered every six hours.

  • NEW FLIP-UP WELDING HELMET FROM ESAB

ESAB, the world-leading manufacturer of welding and cutting equipment, has introduced a newly designed flip-up welding helmet, the Globe-Arc.

Following the ESAB family design, the new hybrid shell is made from strong Zytel material and offers a full head a face protection and is very lightweight. The compact design allows for welding in very tight places, whilst reducing the visible light entering the back of the helmet caused by other welding light.

The new flip visor has an upper retention stop, which eliminates visor drop-down when welding or grinding together with shake proof quarter turn retainers to allow for quick removal and replacement.

The Globe-Arc is suitable for all welding applications as the visor provides effective protection from UV and IR radiation when the visor is open and closed, and is available in different shade levels.

The helmet has a wide field of vision through both the large main and flip-up visors which provides increased work safety. The visor has a flat top brow for easy put downs and to prevent scratching.

ESAB’s new comfort headgear, which is constructed from quality nylon with a large adjustment ratchet and comfort sweat band, is fitted to the helmet.

    A. Vacuum tubes: ¡°3-hi¡± tubes (high-temperature and high-cold resistance, high efficiency) are coated with the patented interferential coating technology, achieving the higher absorptance of 96% and lower emissivity of 4%. The vacuum degree is 5¡Á10-4, 100 times lower that the common tubes, thus its insulation will be better.

    B. Insulation in tanks: insulation is produced by one-off foaming at constant temperature under high pressure; the tank, when processed with high-temperature ripening, will get more even foaming, better insulation efficiency and stability, and less heat loss. The inner tank is made of SUS304, the contents of Chromium and Nickel in which are very high to resist corrosion effectively. Besides, the auto. argon arch welding will extend the lifespan of the tank.

    C. Supports: Made of galvanized sheet, the supports are processed with 14 steps, such as degreasing, phosphorescing, electrostatic spraying, high-temperature ripening, etc, to ensure the stability and anti-corrosion of them.

    D. The entire ¡°SED¡± auxiliary heating system has passed the China Compulsory Certificate. It adopts protection of electric leakage, and other two steps to protect from overheating (stop by temperature controller at 70¡ãC, and by breaker at 110¡ãC). The electric booster, made of Incoloy 800, is excellent in anti-corrosion and dry burning.

    E. Impulse sensor: The pole type pulse sensor (patent number: 200420084034.5 ), made of SUS316L totally, adopts the principle of pulse scanning of the water level to sense the temperature and water level accurately, solving the problem of scaling and water leakage caused by traditional rubber sensors.

  • MONEY SAVED PLUS MORE EFFICIENT CAN AND BOTTLE DRYING FOR TÜRK TUBORG

Financial savings combined with ensured consistent and accurate labelling were the chief drivers for the Türk Tuborg* filling operation in Izmir, Turkey installing new can and bottle drying systems. The drying systems were installed as retrofit units to replace compressed air jets and heated tunnels, and are reported to be achieving significant savings whilst also helping to avoid the problem of label slippage resulting from inefficiently dried bottles.

The can and bottle drying machines are from Air Control Industries (ACI) and were supplied by the company’s Turkish distributor, Yük. Müh. Nihat Kagnici, Sanayi Müsavirligi ve Mümessilligi. The principal reason for the substantial cost savings is the fact the ACI units are all blower powered, a more cost-effective and cleaner way of delivering air for drying bottles and cans.

Prior to opting for the ACI systems, Packaging Engineers Arda Sengöz and Mehmet Kaynak at the Türk Tuborg plant investigated a number of different suppliers. However, a combination of good references from existing customers, competitive pricing and the easy self-installation/running maintenance persuaded them that ACI offered the best solution for the company’s needs. Also, with a local distributor they were confident of professional back-up if required.

Five ACI drying systems are installed, three of which are fully enclosed. Two of the fully enclosed units are installed on canning lines and incorporate ACI’s purpose-engineered ‘CanTunnels’ with Airknives, whilst the third is employed for bottle drying and is equipped with ACI’s ‘JetPlate’ system plus a pair of Airknives. The open units are EL (blower at Eye Level) packages and are CanTunnel systems.

The CanTunnel systems are installed in pairs with dryers located before and after can ‘twisters’ which invert cans so that both top and bottom are dried. Throughput for each of the two parallel lines is 40,000 cans/hr (either 33 or 50cl).

The bottle drying line has a capacity of 60,000 bottles/hr and the ACI dryer must cope with up to 14 different shapes/sizes of bottle, drying neck, cap and bottle in one pass.

“The ACI drying systems are working very well and the support has been excellent, both from ACI and Nihat Kagnici,” said Arda Sengöz, Packaging Engineer. “What’s more, we are saving money. The compressed air systems and heating tunnel were much more expensive to run and maintain so we expect a rapid payback on our investment.”
