  • Gold Tumbles, As Nervous Investors Want Greenbacks Instead

One day, we may see a shock economic event, which causes investors to dump dollars and rush to the safety of gold.

But we’re not there yet. For now, we still live in a world where, in times of nervousness, people rush to the familiar green currency that we can make more and more of, and which so many people think will be as valuable as toilet paper.

Reuters: Gold prices tumbled nearly 5 percent to a one-week low below $1,140 an ounce on Friday as investors fearing debt default in Dubai sought safety in dollars and cash.

Other precious metals also slipped. Silver hit a two-week low of $17.66 an ounce, while platinum and palladium touched one-week lows of $1,418.50 and $351 an ounce respectively.

  • Firefox 3.6 Beta 4 Introduces Local File Handling

The latest beta version of Mozilla’s extremely popular browser Firefox 3.6 Beta 4 was recently pushed to testers and eager users worldwide. It’s mostly a bug fixing release, unsurprising at this stage in the development process when the focus is on rounding out the rough edges. Still, there are a couple of new features geared more at developers, but which will potentially improve the user experience significantly, like the brand new support for the HTML 5 File API.

Mozilla says a total of 100 bugs have been fixed from the previous beta version and it looks like Firefox 3.6 is now very close to a final state. Firefox 3.6 Beta 4 should be the final beta release, and a release candidate version and also the final build are expected to come by the year’s end. The new release focuses on add-on compatibility as 3.6 is considered a major release so add-ons have to be upgraded to support it.

There was talk of labeling 3.6 as a minor update, which would have meant developers wouldn’t have had to update their add-ons, but it looks like those plans were dropped after several developers complained it would create confusion about the versioning system. Still, Mozilla claims that about 70 percent of the add-ons available in the online gallery have now been updated, and it is urging users to help the developers by i… (read more)

  • Malvern publication demonstrates high concentration zeta potential measurement

A new application note, freely available on the Malvern Instruments’ website, describes how the new ZEN1010 high concentration zeta potential cell for the company’s market-leading Zetasizer Nano particle characterization system, overcomes a major hurdle in measuring the zeta potential of high concentration samples. Taking the notoriously difficult to measure titanium dioxide as an example, the authors describe experimental work that demonstrates accurate and reliable zeta potential measurement of concentrated, turbid suspensions. This ability to measure the zeta potential of more concentrated samples than has previously been possible is thanks to the reduced optical path length of the new ZEN1010 cell, and has applications for a very wide range of materials. The application note can be downloaded at www.malvern.com/titaniumdioxide

Because of its high refractive index, titanium dioxide is widely used as a pigment in products such as paints, coatings, paper, food and cosmetics. To perform optimally, the titanium dioxide particles must be properly dispersed and maintained in suspension, and a key parameter used to study dispersion behaviour is zeta potential. This parameter is measured using the technique of laser Doppler electrophoresis, which normally requires samples to be optically clear. The new ZEN1010 cell, however, features an optical path of reduced length, which compensates for the issues of reduced light scattering detection experienced with standard cells when measuring high-concentration samples..

Although it is used in the same way as a standard cell on the Zetasizer Nano, the ZEN1010 allows robust zeta potential measurements in highly concentrated samples. By requiring less sample dilution, it more closely preserves the pH and chemical structure of the sample, for more directly relevant zeta potential measurements. This is especially important for many colloidal materials, where measuring the sample in its native state avoids the need for the often complicated centrifugation and dilution procedures needed to maintain sample integrity.

  • Agent 1.61.065 – DC Gearmotor 6 – 24 V

Most likely you have met him before. When occasionally you use an ATM machine, card reader, drink or other vending mache, he most certainly was at your service.

He is part of a group of silent heroes that do their work in icy conditions as well as in the heat of a summer day, unobtusively and reliably. Without any complaints, without maitenance. He is our 1.61.065, and most likely you have heard of him.

Inconspicuousness is his trademark. For many engineers his greatest advantage may be: Install him, lean back and forget him, because everything on him is focused on durability and reliability.

In addition, this DC gear motor from Bühler Motor has all kinds of other superior features. For example, it is compact. Including the gear, it is 29 mm wide, 40 mm high, 43.3 mm long. Depending on whether the gear is designed as a 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9 step variation, max. Torque of 63 to 420 mNm can be achieved.

A strong performer, who will find work nearly anywhere. The show-stopper: No matter which variation of speed and torque is used, the dimensions of the gear motor stay the same. This is made possible by placing the gear box next to the motor.
Depending on the required torque, the gears may be made from plastic or metal. The special design of the gear box enables shaft operation from both sides. Addition of an encoder via an additional shaft directly out of of the motor makes for very high performances.

6V, 12V, 18V and 24 V versions are available, plus numerous customer-specific modifications. From torque adjustment through winding changes to alternative contact points, modifications of shaft extension and shaft form, to adding additional components, like extra gears, worms, flywheels and weight, all the way to adding adapter and mounting plates, a lot can be done. Upon special request, ratios of 6.4, 10.2, 2132 and 4406 can be achieved. The ratio variations readily availabable from stock are 27.4 – 1,031.6.
The combination of compact design, variability, and quality make our silent hero a first choice, not only in vending machines. Valve adjustments, printing of plastic card, or paper handling in large plotters, are Bühler agent’s 1.61.065 specialities. He’s the designer’s favorite, when a simple fulfillment of important tasks is needed.

  • At Least You’re Not In France — Unemployment Spikes 25% Year Over Year

    nicolas sarkozy gordon brown

French headline unemployment jumped 52,400 in October to 2.627 million, which amounts to a 2% rise over November and a shocking 25% year over year increase.

Workers over 50 and under 25 have been hit particularly hard. Yet apparenlt it appears difficult to know what exactly the unemployment rate is right now.

Reuters: France’s jobless data is not prepared according to the widely used International Labour Organisation standards and does not include an unemployment rate. However, it is politically significant because it is the mostly widely reported domestic jobs indicator.

Given France’s roughly 26 million-strong working population, unemployment is likely above 10%. Trading Economics puts it 10%.

  • Russia.com Fetches $1.5 Million

More often than not, the right domain name can make or break a business. Having the best domain won’t help a horrible service too much and a good one will do alright even with a less-than-inspired domain but, on the whole, it can be a great boon to a websites success. This is why domain names sometimes fetch huge amounts of money and why the ones paying them still profit in the long run. The latest big transaction in the industry was the sale of the Russia.com domain name for a hefty $1.5 million, as the Quitura blog reports.

Apparently the domain name was sold through Sedo, a marketplace for these kind of transactions, to an anonymous buyer. It’s one of the biggest sales of the year but hardly a record breaker. Insure.com was sold last month for a very solid $16 million, one of biggest transactions in history. Other notable sales this year include Toys.com, sold for $5.1 million to the toy maker Toys ‘R’ Us, and Candy.com which sold for $3 million. Korea.com was sold earlier this year for $5 million, setting a high bar for country domain names.

Russia.com was owned by NewMedia Holdings Inc., which licensed it to Paley Media, a group which operates several sites having to do with country names. The site itself was launched in 1995 and since 2004 has been offering generic travel information for the country similar to the … (read more)

  • JP Morgan: Stop Freaking Out, The UAE Can Easily Save Dubai

Kian Abouhossein at J.P. Morgan delivers some excellent insight into the Dubai crisis. The wealthy UAE will be able to easily bail out Dubai if need be, this time. It just might not be so optimistic to do so in the future.

We are less concerned for global banks about Dubai World’s direct $59bn outstanding debt exposure with $4.3bn due to mature in Dec-09 and a further $4.9bn in 1Q10, considering “only” $13bn of syndicated loans across global banking sector based on Dealogic data. Assuming a 10% “hold” strategy, the most exposed banks would be RBS with $0.23bn, DB and CS with $0.17bn each.

The view from our MENA team is that this event reflects cash flow challenges rather than refinancing ability. They believe that obligations on Dubai World and its property unit Nakheel PJSC are likely to be fulfilled at the new May 2010 earliest repayment date, and that Dubai should be eventually be able to fulfill its debt obligations maturing in the short-term ($4bn in Dec-09, relating to Dubai World, and $9 to $10 in 2010) with continued Abu Dhabi support. Abu Dhabi is strong financially with fiscal and current account surpluses, ~$150bn in FX reserves and a ~$300bn sovereign wealth fund. However it seems that Abu Dhabi will no longer be happy to underwrite all debt, and rather will differentiate more strongly between supporting Dubai’s strategically important assets (such as DEWA, and Dubai Ports), and the non strategic assets – hence the concurrent timing of the Dubai World debt restructure and the Abu Dhabi underwritten government of Dubai debt raising.

Here’s one rough measure of relative bank exposure to Dubai, based on Dubai World syndicated loans since 2007. Overall, JP Morgan believes the exposures are relatively small compared with the major banks involved.

    jpk

Here’s probably a better estimate of relative exposure, by loans made to the UAE as a whole. The amount of direct loan exposure to Dubai specifically, within this UAE-wide figure, are apparently very difficult to know.

    jpg

Conclusions for some of the major banks exposed:

    jpj

    ggg

Overall we would argue the UAE direct loan exposure risk is to some extent over-discounted within global banks except for some selective banks. In terms of spillover effect there is a larger concern for IBs considering mark-to-market risk exposure as well as IB revenue exposure to EM, in our view. Current events considered support of our preference for quality credit exposed banks over IBs as discussed in our report “Switching preference from IBs to Credit banks on regulatory changes” 9 Sept 09. Our top picks remain: SocGen, Unicredit, BBVA, DnBNor, NBG and HSBC.

  • Google's Peace Offering to the Advertising Industry

Google is hardly a typical media company despite making the vast majority of its revenue from advertising. In the past, it’s had a rather tense relationship with old media companies and traditional advertising outlets. The strategy seems to have paid off, judging by its success so far, but in recent years Google is using a softer tone and trying to work more with the establishment. In its latest peace offering, the company has pledged an unspecified amount to an initiative by the Advertising Association in the UK to rebuild public trust in advertising and advertisers, not exactly an easy task.

Advertisers are right to be worried, a recent study commissioned by the association found that under 15 percent of adults in the UK trust advertising. Some might say that this is generally a good thing and a healthy amount of skepticism is more than welcomed in a world where everyone is trying to sell you something.

Now, apart from the effect this has on the efficiency of the campaigns themselves, advertisers are even more worried that this would lead to harsher government regulation, the last thing they want. To be fair, more often than not, strict rules create more problems than they solve and the public should be trusted to be able to make its own decisions and judgments, despite countless evidence t… (read more)
