  • BP’s Operation “Top Kill” Gets DELAYED (BP, RIG, HAL, DRQ, TTI, CAM)

    topkill

BP’s last best hope for stopping the oil leak just got delayed until Wednesday.

Top Kill had been expected to commence on Tuesday. Originally, it was planned for Sunday.

“We’re lining up all the equipment on the sea floor. When it’s all staged, we have to connect all the materials together and make sure everything is tested. It’s not a fast process,” said BP spokesperson John Curry.

The plan to stop the leak with cement-like drilling fluid is basically BP’s last quick fix. If it fails, BP will return to a variation on Operation Top Hat.

The company will keep trying new plans to siphon or stop the leak until August, when relief wells will reduce the flow. “No step that we take will make things worse,” Curry said.

  • Critics, Fans Lost As ‘Lost’ Finale Gets Aired – Confused Ending

Lost Season 6 Finale, the last episode of Lost since it started last 2004, will finally end.‘Lost’ fans were seen down after the much famous show ended. ABC aired the drama for the last time on Sunday May 23rd 2010. Somewhat around six years, the show had been running while gaining viewer count day by day. It was surely a huge success but airing of the last show wasn’t the much sad part rather the ending was. Fans worldwide were disappointed to see the finale as they anxiously waited for the drama to start. After it ended, critics and fans were kinda totally Lost as they were starring at each other somewhat clueless.

Internet message boards, blogs, and leading news agencies were seen reporting the ending of the show. While criticizing the ending, some critics were also of the view that the show changed the theme from a Sci-Fi beginning to a Pshchology and Religion route. Some of the fans were also heard as saying that the way, the show started and gained fans, it totally changed and was not so good anymore.

A few critics were of the view that the ending was more a type of Armageddon.

The Lost Finale has been termed a fail and fans told that the ending wasn’t as good as the show was running all along.

While the show ended, critics were of the view that our survivors on the island didn’t survive at all in the first place. Souls of the survivors would be roaming around and haunting the island forever.

So why did the show end this way, a simple question answered, lost finale explained:

“The show is, at its heart and soul, a character study. We were fascinated as storytellers by what makes people the way they are.”stated by the “Lost” co-creator Damon Lindelof.

  • UPDATE: Louisiana oil spill containment efforts, unsatisfactory

An estimated 6 million gallons of oil has spread in the Gulf of Mexico, and more gush out of the damaged well each day. Senate environmental committee head Barbara Boxer has requested the Justice Department to assess BP’s readiness in preventing the oil spill. U.S Interior Secretary Ken Salazar is doubtful whether BP knows what it is doing, and if not they have to be pulled off. BP Chief Executive Tony Hayward had expressed dissatisfaction on the company’s month-long containment efforts.

For one, the amount of oil extracted using the mile-long tube has decreased from 92,400 gallons down to only 57, 120 gallons sucked up in a day, reports the Associated Press, and it changes overtime. WSJ indicates the decline from 5,000 barrels to 1,360 barrels a day. WSJ cites research firm ODS-Petrodata saying that BP executives, scientists, and government officials are learning in progress despite their already month-long efforts.

Second, BP has started spraying 6,000 gallons of chemical Corexit 950 into the gulf to disperse the oil, but its environmental effect is being questioned. There has not been sufficient studies yet regarding dispersant said Nancy Kinner, professor, University of New Hampshire, but BP continues to use it because there would be other environmental concerns for alternatives and they cannot provide them.

Third, instruments used, such as environmental maps, are reportedly outdated. It would cost $11 million to upgrade them. Environmental maps trace areas that need to be protected from oil spill. Also, plastic piping or “booms” to divert oil flow are lacking.

It is like fighting an all-out war, said Coast Guard Commandant Thad Allen. BP has the expertise in stopping the spill, and what the rest could do is to make sure it will happen, he emphasized.

  • Report: GM, Opel agree to restructuring, clearing the way for German loans

To the German government authorities who think General Motors is financially sound enough to pay for Opel‘s restructuring without loan-guarantee assistance, Opel CEO Nick Reilly says that’s not the case. “You need to remember that GM is first of all founded by U.S. taxpayers,” Reilly was quoted as saying. “Frankly, GM needs the money it has got.”

Not surprisingly, GM has found an ally in Opel’s German workers. The General has come to an agreement with the local labor heads who have agreed to forgo €1.26 billion ($1.586B U.S.) in earnings over the next four years. The deal requires that the money ‘saved’ be committed to developing Opel products, and if it isn’t, then GM has to pay it back.

To help everyone keep track of the money and perhaps make financial assistance a more attractive option, Adam Opel AG will become a listed company. Germany hasn’t given any indication of when it will declare its position on giving aid, but with 24,000 workers added to the plea and everyone unsure of how long GM can wait before it needs to take other measures, Germany will probably want to close this chapter out rather soon.

  • 24 Ways to Celebrate ‘24′ Finale

Aside from ‘Lost’, another great TV series will come to an end. We have to say goodbye to Jack Bauer as ‘24′ airs its final episode on May 24.

Kim Potts of tvsquad.com suggests 24 ways on how to throw a party as the favorite TV drama ‘24′ ends. Here is some of the 24:

    1. Need a color scheme for your ‘24′ theme party? Black, white and that funky yellow-y/orange-y color (what the Crayola folks call “Sunglow”) are the colors we most associate with the show.

    2. Guns, obviously, have been a big part of ‘24′ action for all eight seasons. So, even though Jack Bauer and his CTU-ers don’t seem to ever engage in mundane activities like eating or drinking or going to the little federal agent’s room, surely they’d approve of this use of weaponry: Serve beverages in toy water guns.

    3. Another fun gun that’s totally appropriate for a ‘24′ party: Marshmallow shooters. It may be too late to order them online, but we’ve seen them at Bed, Bath and Beyond, Target, etc.

    4. Food idea: Jack Bauer is always on the move, so we’re thinking he’s a finger food kinda guy. Hot dogs, sandwiches, chips, popcorn … regular movie/TV-watching food, but served in ‘24′-colored (see above) bowls and platters.

    5. Food idea: Gummy handcuffs, or chocolate guns and chocolate numbers (2 and 4, of course), made in candy molds.

    6. Invitation idea: In homage to the iconic ‘24′ digital number logo, cheapy digital watches (we always see them in 99-cent stores), with a little tag tied to them that says “It’s time to catch the ‘24′ series finale this Monday night!’ (‘Damn it!’ optional).

    7. Decoration idea: Print out Chuck Norris Facts-ish Jack Facts on super size paper and make party banners and/or drink coasters out of them. A few of the best: “Don’t ask what Jack Bauer would do for a Klondike bar,” “The Boogeyman checks his closet for Jack Bauer” and “Superman has Jack Bauer pajamas.”

Celebrate the success of ‘24′ by throwing a farewell party!

  • Dr. Wakefield Found Guilty Because of Professional Misconduct Over Research

Dr. Andrew Wakefield, the one who first set the MMR vaccination scare has been found guilty by the General Medical Council because of serious professional misconduct over his research. The GMC found that the research is “unethical” since it states that the vaccine can be linked to serious bowel disorders and autism, thus many people were alarmed by it.

The research led by Wakefield was considered as irresponsible since it involved children within the vulnerable age. Dr Wakefield, who was working at London’s Royal Free Hospital as a gastroenterologist at the time, did not have the ethical approval or relevant qualifications for such tests, as stated by the GMC. He also “showed a callous disregard” because during his son’s birthday, he took blood samples from children but failed to declare a conflict of interest, wherein he had received £50,000 to carry out research on behalf of parents who suspected that MMR could lead to autism.

“The panel concluded that it is the only sanction that is appropriate to protect patients and is in the wider public interest, including the maintenance of public trust and confidence in the profession, and is proportionate to the serious and wide-ranging findings made against him.” As stated by Dr. Surendra Kumar, the chairman of GMC.

Wakefield was given 28 days to appeal to what was accused to him. “Unfound” and “unjust” were the things that he said for what was charged against him. “Efforts to discredit and silence me through the GMC process have provided a screen to shield the government from exposure on the MMR vaccine scandal.” These were the things that Wakefield said while GMC announced its sanctions.

  • OBAMA TELLS MILITARY: BE PREPARED FOR WAR IN KOREA

    Barack Obama

Obama released a statement this morning showing full support for South Korea’s retaliation plan for the destruction of the Cheonan.

Technically, we’re now one illegal ship movement by North Korea away from nuclear war.

    From the White House:

President Obama fully supports President Lee in his handling of the ROKS Cheonan incident and the objective investigation that followed.  The measures that the government of the Republic of Korea announced today are called for and entirely appropriate.  The Republic of Korea can continue to count on the full support of the United States, as President Obama has made clear.

Specifically, we endorse President Lee’s demand that North Korea immediately apologize and punish those responsible for the attack, and, most importantly, stop its belligerent and threatening behavior.  U.S. support for South Korea’s defense is unequivocal, and the President has directed his military commanders to coordinate closely with their Republic of Korea counterparts to ensure readiness and to deter future aggression.  We will build on an already strong foundation of excellent cooperation between our militaries and explore further enhancements to our joint posture on the Peninsula as part of our ongoing dialogue.

As President Lee stated in his address earlier today, the Republic of Korea intends to bring this issue to the United Nations Security Council.  We support this move.  Secretary Clinton and Ambassador Rice are each consulting very closely with their Korean counterparts, as well as with Japan, China, and other UN Security Council member states in order to reach agreement on the steps in the Council.

In response to the pattern of North Korean provocation and defiance of international law, the President has directed U.S. government agencies to review their existing authorities and policies related to the DPRK.  This review is aimed at ensuring that we have adequate measures in place and to identify areas where adjustments would be appropriate.

The U.S. will continue to work with the Republic of Korea and other allies and partners to reduce the threat that North Korea poses to regional stability.  Secretary Clinton is currently in Beijing and she will travel to Seoul for discussions with President Lee and his senior advisors on May 26 before reporting back to the President on her consultations in the region.  Secretary Gates is in close contact with ROK Defense Minister Kim and will meet with him and other counterparts at the June 4-6 Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore.  President Obama and President Lee agreed to meet in Canada at the time of the G-20 Summit.

  • Stimulus Surprise: Companies Retrench When Government Spends

    Q&A with: Joshua Coval
    Published: May 24, 2010
    Author: Sean Silverthorne

Recent research at Harvard Business School began with the premise that as a state’s congressional delegation grew in stature and power in Washington, D.C., local businesses would benefit from the increased federal spending sure to come their way.

It turned out quite the opposite. In fact, professors Lauren Cohen, Joshua Coval, and Christopher Malloy discovered to their surprise that companies experienced lower sales and retrenched by cutting payroll, R&D, and other expenses. Indeed, in the years that followed a congressman’s ascendancy to the chairmanship of a powerful committee, the average firm in his state cut back capital expenditures by roughly 15 percent, according to their working paper, “Do Powerful Politicians Cause Corporate Downsizing?

“It was an enormous surprise, at least to us, to learn that the average firm in the chairman’s state did not benefit at all from the unanticipated increase in spending,” Coval reports.

Over a 40-year period, the study looked at increases in local earmarks and other federal spending that flowed to states after the senator or representative rose to the chairmanship of a powerful congressional committee.

We asked Coval about the relationship between the government and the private sector, and how policymakers should critically evaluate federal stimulus plans to help local companies.

Sean Silverthorne: First, a little bit about your empirical approach to the research. Why did you decide to study changes in congressional committee chairmanships?

Joshua Coval: Our original goal was to investigate how politically connected firms benefit from increases in the power of their representatives. A benefit in focusing on changes in committee chairmanships is that their timing is largely exogenous from the perspective of the ascending chairman and his constituents. That is, a change in chairmanship can only occur if the incumbent retires or is voted out–both of which are entirely independent of what is currently happening in the ascending chairman’s state.

Q: One of your findings was that the chairs of powerful congressional committees truly bring home the bacon to their states in the forms of earmark spending. Can you give a sense of how large this effect is?

A: Sure. The average state experiences a 40 to 50 percent increase in earmark spending if its senator becomes chair of one of the top-three committees. In the House, the average is around 20 percent. For broader measures of spending, such
as discretionary state-level federal transfers, the increase from being represented by a powerful senator is around 10 percent.

Q: Perhaps the most intriguing finding, at least for me, was the degree and consistency to which federal spending at the state level seemed to be connected with a decrease in corporate spending and employment. Did you suspect this was the case when you started the study?

A: We began by examining how the average firm in a chairman’s state was impacted by his ascension. The idea was that this would provide a lower bound on the benefits from being politically connected. It was an enormous surprise, at least to us, to learn that the average firm in the chairman’s state did not benefit at all from the increase in spending. Indeed, the firms significantly cut physical and R&D spending, reduce employment, and experience lower sales.

The results show up throughout the past 40 years, in large and small states, in large and small firms, and are most pronounced in geographically concentrated firms and within the industries that are the target of the spending.

Q: Although you didn’t intend to answer this question with the research, what does your team suspect are some of the causes that could explain why companies retrench when federal dollars come into their neighborhoods?

A: Some of the dollars directly supplant private-sector activity—they literally undertake projects the private sector was planning to do on its own. The Tennessee Valley Authority of 1933 is perhaps the most famous example of this.

Other dollars appear to indirectly crowd out private firms by hiring away employees and the like. For instance, our effects are strongest when unemployment is low and capacity utilization is high. But we suspect that a third and potentially quite strong effect is the uncertainty that is created by government involvement.

Q: These findings present something of a dilemma for public policymakers who believe that federal spending can stimulate private economic development. How would you suggest they approach the problem that federal dollars may actually cause private-sector retrenchment?

A: Our findings suggest that they should revisit their belief that federal spending can stimulate private economic development. It is important to note that our research ignores all costs associated with paying for the spending such as higher taxes or increased borrowing. From the perspective of the target state, the funds are essentially free, but clearly at the national level someone has to pay for stimulus spending. And in the absence of a positive private-sector response, it seems even more difficult to justify federal spending than otherwise.

Q: What do you think your research has brought to the literature?

A: The literature has had difficulty empirically identifying the effect of government spending on the private sector. Because spending both influences and is influenced by developments in the private sector, disentangling the two has proven challenging. We think our approach offers a rare opportunity to identify the private-sector response to government spending increases that are essentially random.

Q: What are you working on next?

A: Our next project will be to ask a similar question of the private sector: Does private-sector economic activity create or crowd out additional private-sector opportunities? Put differently, did Bill Gates’s decision to relocate Microsoft to the Seattle area in 1979 increase the likelihood that Amazon.com, Starbucks, and Costco would emerge from there a decade or so later? If so, this has strong implications for policymakers interested in, say, improving Detroit’s economic prospects.

  • Report: Obama kicks off drive to enact tough fuel economy standards through 2025

    Filed under:

A year ago, the White House led the effort to get automakers’ Corporate Average Fuel Economy to 35.5 miles per gallon by 2016. Although the number was eventually pegged at 34.1 mpg, it will actually be slightly lower because of other non-automotive credits that will be applied. One might have thought automakers would still be grousing the work that needs to be done, but in fact they encouraged the federal government to go further, and so it has: the White House began working this week on setting CAFE standards through 2025.

The reason for this? The Golden State. Just after last year’s 2016 CAFE numbers were announced, California said it would work on “a much more stringent standard” for 2017 and afterward. Automakers urged the feds to head the California Air Resources Board off at the pass in order to stay ahead of state initiatives, thereby quashing the chance that different laws would hit the books.

The EPA and DOT have just gotten to work on crafting new standards, so it will probably be another year before new numbers come out. For you folks with large-capacity, high-horsepower engines, you might want to take this chance to rev ’em if ya got ’em.

  • An Amusing Historical Look At Moral Panics And The Content Industry

PopeHilarius was the first of a few of you to send over the amusing Cracked story on “5 Insane File Sharing Panics from Before the Internet.” If you’re a regular reader of this site, none of these will be all that surprising to you. But, it does show that time and time again, the content industry, throughout history, has always claimed that new technologies will kill them off. And every time they’ve been totally and completely wrong. In fact, pretty much every time the opposite happened, and the new technology created massive new opportunities for growth. This particular list (and it’s easy to add more to it) includes:

    1. VCR’s Will Kill Television!
    2. Phonographs and Player Pianos Will Kill Music!
    3. Pirated BASIC Will Kill Software Development!
    4. The Cassette Will Kill Music! Again!
    5. The Printing Press Will Kill Literature!

What’s amazing isn’t just that the industry seems to freak out in this same way every single time, but that politicians still fall for it.

  • Jeff Saut: You’d Be A Fool To Bet Against The Market At These Levels

Add Jeff Saut of Raymond James to those who think the market is clearly oversold at current levels:

“She’s got legs, she knows how to use them,” the year was 1990 and the group – ZZ Top; except in this case I am not talking about the hit song, but rather the stock market for after a somewhat “kiss your sister” type session the Dow put “legs on” to the upside late last Friday.  “She’s got legs” indeed for the session may have locked up the lows, at least on a short-term basis.  To be sure, the
sequence was about right following the crashette of May 6th at ~1066 based on the S&P 500 (SPX/1087.69).  Recall after that “flash crash” we got the perfunctory 1 – 3 session stabilization/bounce followed by the downside retest of that ~1066 intraday low.  As stated, sometimes said low is marginally violated, but most of the time it is not.  Obviously, the SPX’s May 6th low was violated last week by Friday’s intraday low of 1055.90.

Accompanying that low, however, were some pretty amazing statistics.  For example, according to my friends at Bespoke Investment Group, as scribed last Thursday:

“The S&P 500 and all ten sectors are in extremely oversold territory.  We recommend getting long here regardless of your long-term view of the market.  Only 6% of S&P 500 stocks are trading above their 50-day moving averages.  Only one percent of the Financial sector stocks are above their 50-DMAs, while not one single Energy stock is above its 50-DMA.  (Moreover) The S&P 500 is currently three standard deviations below its 50-DMA.  We believe the February lows will hold, and this market will bounce back, at least to its 50-DMA (currently at 1170.89) over the next month or so.  At times like these, it may seem like it is more risky to get long than it is to get short, but history has shown that the exact opposite is true.”

Well said, Bespoke; and I would add, at Friday’s lows the SPX was an eye-popping 9.8% below its 50-DMA.  Ladies and gentlemen, history suggests that betting on the downside when the SPX is more than 6% below its 50-DMA is a bad bet!  And then on Friday there was this from Jason Goepfert’s brilliant website (sentimentrader.com):

    1) This is only the 6th time in history the S&P 500 futures have declined 5 days in a row and then gapped down (by) at least –
1%.  All five of the others closed above the opening price.
    2) The total put/call ratio is poised to close at its 4th-highest level since modern reporting began in 1995.  The other 3 were all
clustered in late February, early March, of 2007 (right before a 12% rally).
    3) The Up Issues Ratio is so low, at just under 4%, that only two other days since 1950 can match this bad breadth.  They were 9/26/55 and 10/19/87 (the crash), after which we saw vicious short-term bounces.

Meanwhile, the market continues to trade lower, with the Dow currently off 73.

  • Jimmy Kimmel Live – “Lost” Series Finale and Lost’s Alternate Endings

Jimmy Kimmel invited this week on his show the cast of Lost where they were given the chance to quote what were their most memorable scenes of the show. The cast who were present included Emilie de Ravin, Michael Emerson, Jeremy Davies, Terry O’Quinn, Matthew Fox, Alan Dale and Josh Holloway. The cast members also entertained questions from the audience.

“Is it good Terry or bad Terry we have here tonight?” asked Kimmel to Terry O’Quinn who played John Locke and later on the Man in Black (aka Smoke Monster) who inhabited his character’s body after John died earlier in the season. Emerson, who played Ben Linus, said “We try to think that kind of double-act we can do later in life, but once ina while we have a half-clever idea that we’re pitching around in street corners.”

Also Jimmy Kimmel showed “alternate endings” to the show “Lost”. In one, the cast are around a campfire and Sayid Jarrah, played by Naveen Andrews, is sent home by the host of CBS reality show “Survivor”  Jeff Probst stating “Sorry, Sayid. The tribe has spoken. You gotta leave the island, man. You gotta go.” The other ending involves Hurley, played by Jorge Garcia, together with Jack Shephard (played by Fox) and Claire Styx (played by Emilie De Ravin) recreates the finale of HBO’s “The Sopranos” where they substitute Styx song “Come Sail Away” instead of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’”. Another ending that immitates the final episode of “Newhart” involves Kate Austen (played by Evangeline Lilly) waking up next to Bob Newhart and reveals that she, too, was dreaming that she was in an island with polar bears and a smoke monster.

The American actress and film producer, Reese Witherspoon, will now live in together with his boyfriend, Jim Toth.

According to reports, the actress wants to move in with her new boy friend! It seems that their romance is in the peak of their relationship. Reese, wanting to move in with Jim, appears to have a good bond with his boyfriend. A friend of Witherspoon told Us Weekly magazine, that the couple was talking about “moving in together” and they “don’t want to spend anytime apart”.

After her breakup with Jake Gyllenhaal, Reese is living with her two children in Brentwood while Jim has a place in Los Angeles. But where will this couple plan to live? Have they decided where and when will they get together? It isn’t known yet where they will live so we have to wait for them to decide.

According to Radar online, Reese was seen with Jim shopping together only this Saturday. They even stopped at park to watch Reese’s kids play soccer. After that, they attended a friend’s house party at Hollywood hills.

Reese is somehow moving on with her relationship on a short period of time. From a divorce with her ex-husband Ryan Phillippe and break up with Jake Gyllenhaal, Witherspoon must be really in love with her current boyfriend. Even if it is only four months, their bond was really unbreakable. Reese was even seen window shopping for a ring. “Reese micromanages everything, of course she’ll want to give some input on the ring she’ll be wearing for the rest of her life.” Says a friend of Reese to Ok! • Jimmy Kimmel’s ‘Lost’ Alternate Endings

After six years, the TV series “Lost” has finally came to an end. For those who were disappointed with the 2 and 1/2 hour ‘Lost’ Finale, you might want to see the three alternate endings that Jimmy Kimmel presented on his show last night.

Jimmy Kimmel’s much-awaited three alternate endings to ‘Lost’ aired during his “Aloha to Lost” special last night. Show producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse are also in the alternate endings, brainstorming on how to end the series.

The first one is probably the funniest. It was based on the reality show ‘Survivor’. Sayid was eliminated by host Jeff Probst, saying, “I’m sorry, Sayid, the tribe has spoken,” following the reality-TV show’s protocol and snuffs out Sayid’s torch.

Sayid said on his exit interview: “I did not spend five years in the Republican Guard, get drowned in a pond, take a bomb to the stomach on a submarine to get eliminated by Jeff {beep} Probst.”

The second alternate ending is a parody of ‘The Sopranos’ and the third one shows Bob Newhart on his bed.

Watch the alternate endings here and tell us what you think.

    – Nicio fapta buna nu scapa nepedepsita! (proverbul meu preferat)

    – Ca romanu’ nu-i nici unu’, unde-s multi putea fi unu!!

    – Fie piinea cit de rea, tot ti-o fura cineva.

    – De urata nu-i frumoasa, da’i desteapta, proasta dracu’!

    – Cine e harnic si munceste are tot ce vrea.Cine-i lenes si
chiuleste are tot asa.

    – Daca totul a iesit bine, inseamna ca ai gresit undeva.

    – Mama prostilor e mereu gravida…
