Turck’s new DX80 from Banner Engineering replaces costly wiring in wide area installations
    08/10 – May 11, 2010

A scalable wireless network that can monitor and control I/O functions or provide serial communication at up to 56 locations has been introduced by Turck and Banner Engineering. The new SureCross DX80 product line replaces costly wiring in a wide range of industrial, agricultural, power generation, water supply and waste disposal applications. Discrete, serial and analog devices that can be controlled by the network include ultrasonic and photoelectric sensors, pumps, counters, thermocouple and RTD temperature sensors. The remote nodes gather data and transmit control commands between the sensors or other devices and a central Gateway. The Gateway maps inputs from the remote nodes and interfaces with a PLC or HMI via RS-485 modbus or Ethernet/IP.
Designed for applications where wiring is impractical or unaffordable, DX80 nodes and the devices they monitor can be powered by 10-30 VDC, battery or solar panels. This capability can eliminate the need for power wiring as well as control wiring, providing significant cost reduction and ease of installation in situations that cover wide areas. Banner’s unique power management capability and low power consumption enable a node and sensor to operate for years on a single battery power supply. Almost all units have industry standard robust IP67 housings. Models with Intrinsically Safe and Class I Division 2 (Atex Zone 0) approvals are available for extreme environments. Node to gateway transmission range using license-free radio is 3 km at 2.4 GHz. The signal range can be extended by adding DataRadio modules as repeaters.

Turck’s new DX80 Industrial Wireless Network from Banner Engineering includes one Gateway and up to 56 remote nodes for I/O monitoring and control

  • 7 July inquests to investigate role of MI5 and police

The inquests of the 7 July suicide bombers will investigate the role of MI5 and police prior to the 2005 terrorist attacks, a coroner said today.

Lady Justice Hallett told the royal courts of justice in central London that the hearings into the deaths of the four bombers would not be heard at the same time as those of their 52 victims.

However some survivors of the blasts were disappointed when the coroner refused their request to be able to cross-examine witnesses.

Hallett had been asked to decide what form the inquests would take ahead of the hearings later this year.

Last month counsel for the Security Service and the home secretary said disclosing MI5 files about the four suicide bombers to the families of those killed in the London attacks would be “impossible”. MI5 argued that investigating claims that it could have prevented the atrocities would involve “handing over the keys” to MI5’s Thames House headquarters.

At this morning’s hearing, Hallett admitted there was “some force” in the security service’s argument that the sensitivity of evidence about its intelligence should restrict the inquest’s investigations. However, the coroner said she wanted to “conduct such investigations as are possible”, adding that MI5 had offered its full co-operation.

  • New UK govt to curb CCTV, scrap ID cards, help open source

Via Prison Planet.com » Prison Planet

    Ars Technica

    Friday, May 21, 2010

The Britain of today is watched constantly by CCTV cameras, is preparing for a national ID card, slaps a “crown copyright” on most government data, and can now censor websites and eventually boot people off the Internet.

According to the new Liberal Democrat/Tory coalition government, that’s all about to change. The coalition today released its unified policy statement (PDF), and for techies and privacy advocates, there’s lots to like.

    • We will scrap the ID card scheme, the National Identity register and the ContactPoint database, and halt the next generation of biometric passports.
    • We will outlaw the fingerprinting of children at school without parental permission.
    • We will adopt the protections of the Scottish model for the DNA database.
    • We will review libel laws to protect freedom of speech.
    • We will further regulate CCTV.
    • We will end the storage of internet and e-mail records without good reason.
    • We will create a level playing field for open-source software and will enable large ICT projects to be split into smaller components.
    • We will create a new “right to data” so that government-held datasets can be requested and used by the public, and then published on a regular basis.
    • We will introduce measures to ensure the rapid roll-out of superfast broadband across the country. We will ensure that BT and other infrastructure providers allow the use of their assets to deliver such broadband, and we will seek to introduce superfast broadband in remote areas at the same time as in more populated areas. If necessary, we will consider using the part of the TV license fee that is supporting the digital switchover to fund broadband in areas that the market alone will not reach.

That last bit about broadband is a change from current Labour policies, which proposed a (hugely unpopular) 50p per month tax on broadband connections to help fund universal broadband infrastructure. The new proposal draws that money from the already-existing TV license fee.

In addition, the Lib Dems have separately pledged to roll back the worst excesses of the recent Digital Economy bill that brought Web censorship and possible Internet disconnection to the UK. At a party conference over the weekend, they asked ministers to “take all possible steps to ensure the repeal of those sections of the Digital Economy Act 2010 which are inconsistent with the policy motion ‘Freedom, creativity and the internet‘.”

  • PIADC: Soon to Close?

Plum Island Animal Disease Center The Plum Island Animal Disease Center (PIADC), located off the northeast coast of Long Island in New York, is one of the United States federal research facility that is responsible for the research and diagnosis to protect United States animal industries and exports against catastrophic economic losses caused by foreign animal disease (FAD) agents that are accidentally or deliberately introduced into the country. U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has an important job in the PIADC for they help protect farm animals, farmers and ranchers, and the nation’s farm economy and export markets.

The USDA took over this island for about 50 years and was closed to the public because of the risk associated viruses. It was first introduced to the media in the year 1992. And now, the Department of Homeland Security had announced that this island will be closing soon.

There are a lot of species in the island, also, there are many wild and rare flowers and these are just some of the reasons why the conversation groups are advocating that the PIADC should be close. But the officials are still hoping that the Plum Island will remain as is.

  • US Court Refuses Injunction Against RapidShare As Perfect 10 Gets Legal Theories Rejected Yet Again

Ah, Perfect 10. The adult content company has spent the last decade or so engaged in one copyright lawsuit after another, accusing pretty much every search engine out there of copyright infringement for hosting thumbnails of images that others uploaded. It has lost repeatedly. And yet, it keeps on suing. At some point, you have to wonder if its legal budget might have been better spent on, I don’t know, actually innovating and giving people a reason to buy. It looks like yet another of its legal theories isn’t working out so well in court. paperbag was the first of a few of you to send in the news that the district court in California’s Southern District has refused to grant an injunction against Rapidshare, suggesting that, as a mere file locker, Rapidshare would not be liable for the infringement done by its users.

Amusingly, the ruling came out just a day before a bunch of US politicians tagged Rapidshare as one of the worst copyright offenders out there, and suggested sanctions should be made against Germany for not stopping Rapidshare. Funny, then, that a US court also doesn’t seem to think Rapidshare is breaking copyright law…

Of course, this was just the ruling over the request for a preliminary injunction. TorrentFreak’s headline jumps the gun a bit in saying a court found Rapidshare “not guilty” for infringement. It sounds like we haven’t quite reached that stage yet. This was just a request for an injunction before the actual case goes to trial. That said, at this point, I can’t find a copy of the actual ruling, and the only information to go off of is Rapidshare’s own press release, which states “The court rejected the application in its entirety. In its ruling, the court stated that as a file-hosting company, RapidShare cannot be accused of any infringements of copyrights.” That sounds like the court said Rapidshare qualified for DMCA safe harbors, but without the full ruling, we don’t know for sure — and it’s entirely possible that Rapidshare is exaggerating the ruling.

If anyone has access to the actual ruling, and are willing to share it, it could be interesting (and potentially relevant to other ongoing cases, such as the Viacom v. YouTube case). Once I’ve seen a copy I’ll either update this post or post again, if the details warrant a separate post.

  • Vision Tyrano Goes to Military Boot Camp

Yes, one of my favorite subjects to talk about is the Vision Tyrano truck (which I had the pleasure of checking out in person recently), because it is in class of its own, literally. The Tyrano is a heavy duty class 8 truck weighing 80,000 lbs that runs on compressed hydrogen gas and hybrid electric energy.

The Vision Tyrano has 3,300 lbs.-ft. of torque available and a range of around 200 miles which can be extended to 400 miles over an 8 hour shift. The Tyrano is quiet, uses zero fossil fuels and gives off zero emissions.

This is why the U. S. military is interested in such a vehicle. Vision Industries has just signed an agreement to have Burtek Incorporated represent them in the U. S. defense marketplace.

According to Dr. James I. Finley, President and Chief Executive Officer of Burtek, “Consider the fact that a full 80 percent of all United States Marine Corps fatalities occur in convoys; 40 percent of which are primarily involved in the transport of both water and fossil fuels. Reducing or eliminating the need to transport fossil fuels and water further entrenches the value of the hydrogen-fuel solution in saving American lives.”

Now, it’s obvious to me on how the Tyrano will help reduce the hauling of fossil fuels in military situations, but I’m not sure how the truck will help reduce the need for water. Will water not still be needed for the troops to drink and for the creation of hydrogen?

Be that as it may, the U. S. military is known for testing leading edge transportation technology. And whether it is being used in active duty or not, the Tyrano truck stands a good chance of being part of the Defense Department’s lineup of heavy vehicles for years to come.

  • Bret Michaels in hospital again after suffering a TIA

Bret Michaels returned in hospital after suffering a TIAPoison singer has been admitted once again in hospital after suffering a TIA. While recovering, doctors are questioning his plans to get back in business by the end of the month.

According to Bret Michaels report on its website, Thursday he had to return to hospital after suffering a TIA, which for a short time prevents blood from flowing properly to the brain.

In late April, the former lead singer of Posion and U.S. TV star had to be in the hospital which left him in critical condition. Fortunately, two weeks later was able to leave the medical center.

However, Michaels, 47, returned to the hospital after starting to notice some numbness on the left side of his body “predominantly in their hands and face,” says the website.

In Bret’s scans, doctors found that he has a ‘hole’ in his heart, but they do not believe that it’s related to the TIA he suffered last month.

The medical team said that both the TIA and the hole in the heart are treatable, but has challenged the singer to return to the stage later this month as planned or resume his appearances on Celebrity Apprentice.

“Without a doubt, is determined to get well and recover one hundred percent. Clinically speaking is a fantastic attitude both mentally and physically for him,” says neurosurgeon Joseph Zabramski.

However, neither the brain nor the body of Bret Michaels “is a hundred percent yet, especially with the hole in his heart that we have found,” added the doctor, who in any case considered “good news” that they have found the problem so quickly.

For its part, the singer’s representative, Janna Elias, has assured fans that Michaels is optimistic about his recovery, tired of being in the hospital and is ready to return to action again.

  • Level indicators with float and MAX/MIN level electrical sensor

Highly versatile new level indicators with float from ELESA.

HFL/E and HFLT/E level indicators with float can be used to detect the minimum or maximum level of liquid in a tank.
    Both models consist of:
    – a polyamide-based technopolymer body,
    – a connector with sensor block, with protection class IP 65 according to UNI 529 table.
    – a dipstick (AISI 304 stainless steel tube for HFL/E model and polyamide-based technopolymer for HFLT/E model)
    – a float (in NBR synthetic rubber for HFL/E model and polyamide-based technopolymer for HFLT/E model)
For these indicators, maximum continuous working temperature is 80°C.

HFL/E indicators are available with normally open contact for minimum level detection, or with normally closed contact for maximum level detection.

Two standard executions are available for assembly: with threaded coupler or flange with holes for screw fastening.
The dipstick enables detection at a control quota of 500 mm from the tank maximum level. Cutting the dipstick according to the specifications shown on the technical data sheet allows to reduce the control quota up to 120 mm.

HFLT/E indicators allow to reverse the polarity of the magnet so as to use the same indicator for both minimum and maximum level detection.
Easy access is provided to the magnet by simply loosening the fastening nut.
The technopolymer dipstick features two raised scales marking the exact cutting point so as to obtain the desired set point in the presence of oil or water.

Free from magnetic parts, the float is integral to the dipstick making this level indicator ideal for use in tanks containing dirty liquids, water, oil, coolant oil, also with iron metal parts or foams. Moreover, the operation is independent of the fluid electrical conductivity.
To ensure utmost safety, the electrical components are separated from the tank and perfectly sealed by means of ultrasound welding.
