  • Mercedes-Benz to offer 16-passenger Sprinter variant

Daimler AG terminated its contract with nearly 350 Dodge dealers last year to sell the Sprinter van, which has been sold by selected Freightliner dealers since 2001. Daimler Vans USA is now expanding the Sprinter model with the addition of a passenger van that seats up to 16 individuals, hoping to target hotel shuttle service, paratransit and other applications (a very big road-trip for your friends and family).

The vehicle will go on sale later this summer and can be ordered from Mercedes-Benz or Freightliner. Mercedes-Benz spokesman Dan Barile says that the company will offer four different interior configurations including a model with a wheelchair lift.

Power for the van will come from a 188-hp 3.0L turbocharged diesel V6.

Pricing will be announced closer to launch date.

Senator Patrick (Leaky) Leahy (D-VT) has stated that Obama’s choice for the Supreme Court, to replace Justice John Paul Stevens who is retiring at the end of this term, should be in place for the next Supreme Court term which begins in October.

Barack Obama and John Paul Stevens

Umm, maybe not, Pat… there are some Senate Republicans who are going to work at their pay grade for once and just scrutinize the hell out of everything they’ve ever done. Oh, I don’t know, does the name Bork bring anything to mind? This was when Ted Kennedy opposed Judge Robert Bork’s nomination to the Supreme Court by President Ronald Reagan. Ted Kennedy stood in front of the nation and attacked Bork, lying through his eye teeth. The Republicans were completely caught off balance and by the time they did react to the attack the Democrats owned the story. The rest is history.

History may be written here again this summer as the left stack up their leftist nominees, selected by their leftist boss, to advance through judicial activism what the left cannot win at the ballot box. How the Senate Republicans handle this process will tell us a whole bunch about who will stay in the Senate. The truth is we’ve had a gut full of Republicans making deals and pandering to our political opponents. It’s time to stand up and be counted or…? read more »

  • Publisher Warns Fans That Liking A Book Too Much May Be Illegal

When will they learn? Apparently, one of the hot book series out there is the “Millennium Trilogy” by author Stieg Larsson. Apparently, the first couple of books have become incredibly popular in the US, but the third in the series has been released elsewhere, but not in the US yet. So, not surprisingly, many fans are ordering it from abroad. Most of the article is about the fans’ excitement for the book, and their demand for it:

“Once you know you can have it, once you know it exists in English and you can buy it, it would be crazy not to.”

But, the US publisher is quoted towards the end threatening those doing so, claiming it’s illegal:

“What I would say to readers is, I would encourage them to shop at their local bookseller here in the United States or their online bookseller in the United States, where no laws are being broken and you are supporting the continuing discovery of world literature.”

As the anonymous reader who submitted this story notes, rather than just reading this statement, you really should hear the audio version of what Paul Bogaards from publisher Knoph says, because it’s not fully conveyed in the written article. First, what he says in the audio version:

“Because it’s against the law. It’s a violation of copyright law.”

But you have to hear the sheer condescension in the tone. He says it as if he’s speaking to pre-schoolers, not huge fans of these books.

The problem here isn’t people violating copyright law, it’s Knopf not realizing that we live in a global world, and then failing to satisfy the needs of consumers, who are seeking alternative providers. It was a business model mistake on the part of Knopf, and insulting the biggest fans of the books doesn’t seem like the best way to handle the situation.

  • IndyCar: 2010 Grand Prix of Alabama [SPOILER ALERT]

Charles Barkley waves the green flag to start the 2010 Grand Prix of Alabama – Click above for high-res image gallery

Round three of the 2010 IndyCar season had the teams visiting Barber Motosports Park in Birmingham, Alabama for the first time. Well, technically the IZOD IndyCar Series was already here, as the track hosted the pre-season test sessions for the series. The 2010 Grand Prix of Alabama presented by Legacy Credit Union, however, was to be the first Indycar race held at the track.

Seeking to pick up where he left off in St. Petersburg, championship points leader, Will Power, was also aiming to set IndyCar history with the first ever three-for-three start to the season. If he managed to grab the checkered flag at the end of the race, Power would be the first to accomplish such a feat and would tie three other drivers for the most wins in a row in series history as well.

Power had already shown he could hold his own at Barber, claiming the fastest overall laps in testing and practice leading up to the race, so it didn’t look good for the competition. But would Power be able to claim the pole? Would he capture that third win in three races and set IndyCar history? Follow the jump to see how the race unfolded in Birmingham.

It’s refreshing to see Gary Novak challenging climatology’s cherished assumptions (as usual), but I believe that more scrutiny should be cast on that minus 19° temperature in the first place. The premise of this widely-accepted estimate is flawed because, due to the 4th power relationship between irradiance and temperature, the average of one cannot agree with the average of the other. Consider, for instance, merely two spots on earth exposed to two different solar irradiances.

Some have wondered whether the forthcoming release of Wall Street II movie by Oliver Stone portends a market crash, considering that the last Wall Street was released right before the crash of 1987.

Actually, this line of reasoning understates the case.

There was actually another movie called Wall Street that came out in 1929. Of course, the market collapsed that year, too.

The release of the movie got pushed back to September, so we got a reprieve. But if history is any guide, we’re heading for trouble later this year.

  • BMW M3 Sedan to be killed off… because no one wants to buy it

We find ourselves very much attracted to the BMW M3 Sedan, however, many of you aren’t on the same page as us. So much so, that sluggish sales of the new BMW M3 Sedan has forced the German automaker to drop the variant when it comes time to develop the next-generation of the M3.

Apparently it doesn’t make sense for BMW to do an M3 Sedan seeing as sales have been somewhat disappointing and the cost involved with developing the variant to bring it to the market.

Click here to get prices on the 2010 BMW M3.

Nonetheless, all of you high-performance sedan lovers can hold out for a performance version of the next-generation four-door 3-Series – we hear it’s going to be something similar to the new 335is seen at the 2010 New York Auto Show. At least that will give the Audi S4 sedan a true competitor.

  • Video: Mini E Race completes Nurburgring lap in 09:51.45 minutes

It’s probably not the car you expect to tout a Nurburgring-Nordschleife circuit lap time but the Mini E today completed a lap of the “Green Hell” in 09:51.45. Known as the Mini E Race, a modified version of the electric-Cooper ran the famous German circuit and hit a top speed of 187 km/h (116 mph).

“The length and profile of the Nordschleife place extreme demands on the technology of our electric car. But the MINI E Race met this considerable challenge with great authority,” said the BMW Group’s Peter Krams, who headed up the project. “The aim of this unique undertaking was to provide an impressive showcase of the great potential of the MINI E and its environment-friendly drive concept.”

Click here to get prices on the 2010 Mini Cooper.

The Mini E Race was piloted by former DTM racing driver Thomas Jäger from Munich. “I’ve driven this circuit many times, but never in such an extraordinary car,” said Jäger, the MINI Challenge champion in 2006. “The power of the electric motor has an incredible effect, as you can access its full reserves of torque at all times. Another element of this fascinating experience is the lack of noise from the drivetrain. All in all, that was certainly the cleanest and quietest race lap I’ve ever driven.”

GSR Autosport 350R – Click above to watch the progress of the season

Formula DRIFT is recognized as the North American professional drifting championship series. Autoblog has been invited behind-the-scenes with GSR Autosport, and their driver Michael Essa, as the team builds, tests and campaigns an all-new V10-powered BMW 350R during the 2010 racing season. This is the fourth installment in our series (see Part I, Part II and Part III) as we follow the team throughout the development, testing and race season.

The wail of BMW’s V10 bouncing off the limiter at redline is deafening – especially coming out of two straight pipes – so it’s unlikely that anyone heard the steel lower control arm on the front right of the 350R shatter. Michael Essa, manning the M5-powered 3 Series, certainly didn’t. The run had been going well, just like the ones before it, when all of a sudden the BMW unexpectedly snapped off its line and careened directly into the tire barrier at speed. The incident would wreak havoc on our debut weekend at Formula Drift.
