from greenleft, 25 March 2010: “It was common during the opening of the Iraq war to see slogans proclaiming “No blood for oil!” The cover story for the war — Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein’s links with Al Qaeda and his weapons of mass destruction — were obvious mass deceptions, hiding a far less palatable imperial agenda. The truth was that Iraq was a major producer of oil and, in our age, oil is the most strategic resource of all… Why then, are there no slogans saying “No blood for opium”?” more

  • Spy Shots: Honda Odyssey’s next act spied

The first on-the-road spy shots have turned up of what we’re quite sure is the next generation Honda Odyssey. True to Honda ‘concept car’ form, the disguised prototype appears very close to the concept version that Honda revealed last month at the Chicago Auto Show.

The basic shape echoes the concept and the vinyl cladding around the rear-most side windows is a likely indicator that the cut-down profile seen on the Chicago van will be retained. The tapered taillights of the concept are also evident in the rear view. Up front the small windows at the base of the A-pillar are covered with tape on the prototypes.

Since Honda isn’t holding a press conference at the New York Auto Show, next week we don’t expect the Odyssey to debut there. Instead it will likely debut at a non-auto show event sometime in the summer or fall and go on sale before the end of the year.

Vivos Underground Shelter Network for 4,000 Survivors

Nationwide network of co-ownership underground catastrophe shelters.

Between sensational Hollywood blockbusters, Nibiru theories, and interpretations of the Mayan calendar, much fear and panic has spread regarding December 21, 2012, the day of the alleged apocalypse. Fear not, however, as one company has found a simple solution to surviving the end of the world: privately co-owned, comfortable, long-term autonomous, underground bunkers.
Robert Vicino is the founder of the Vivos Group, a southern California enterprise responsible for building a nationwide network of survival shelters, for 2012, the coming encounter of Apophis in 2029, or whatever and whenever the need may come. To date, the company’s first underground complex has started construction near Barstow, California. Each nuclear blast proof facility is engineered to withstand surface temperatures reaching 1,250 Fahrenheit (for 10 days), a force 10 magnitude earthquake, water submersion for up to 500 hours, or winds of 450 MPH, as well as radiation, biological or chemical attack.
As the apocalypse may come in many forms, the shelters are also made to withstand the pressure of 90-pound hailstones traveling at the speed of 100 MPH, a “50 megaton air burst” detonated from 20 miles away, and, in the event of social anarchy, the compound may even serve as an armed fortress.
Each shelter will hold 172-200 people (with approximately 100 sq. feet allotted per person) and will be equipped with enough food, clothing, medicine, fuel, water and survival gear for one whole year. A well stocked menu of freeze-dried foods, an urgent medical and dental care center, and a large wardrobe inventory will be among some of the amenities.
There are current plans to build 20 shelters around the nation, each within 150-200 miles of major metropolitan areas. Though at complete build out Vivos will accommodate 4,000 people, Vicino markets the facility as a “modern day Noah’s Ark” wherein there will be a broad cross-section of people of all ages, religions, professional abilities and skills for the benefit of the entire group. Vivos is also encouraging universities to donate DNA samples of “every living thing on Earth” to be stored in their refrigerated vaults.

The Detroit automaker will be adding a third shift to support Chevrolet Equinox production in Oshawa on the Consolidated Line in October and is expected to help the return of approximately 600 employees to the plant. At CAMI, all laid off employees will soon be recalled and the additional body shop volume required to support the Equinox build in Oshawa is expected to result in the need for approximately 70 new jobs, at CAMI by August of this year. The plan also enables CAMI to increase GMC Terrain volumes.

2011 BMW X5 – Click above for high-res image gallery

In the luxury utility vehicle segment, the saying “less is more” rarely applies. And BMW promises us that the 2011 X5 will deliver more power, more luxury and more refinement. But the X5 will also come with the “less” as well, as in 10 percent less fuel consumption and carbon emissions.

For 2011, BMW has revised the fourth-generation X5’s now all-turbo engine offerings and added a standard eight-speed automatic to a vehicle that reportedly contains nearly 4,000 parts that are all new. And thanks to some pretty remarkable work at the company’s Spartanburg, South Carolina plant, production of the new model commenced over the course of a single weekend. In short, BMW utilized a process that it calls “digital changeover” to stop production of the 2010 X5 on March 19 without slowing production at all, and just two days later on March 22, production examples of the 2011 model were flowing down the assembly line.

Beyond the multitude of powertrain changes under the hood of the 2011 X5, Bobby Hitt, (deep breath) Department Manager for Corporate Affairs, BMW Manufacturing Co, points out that the exterior received quite a bit of rework as well. “The new model X5 features exterior design changes including new front and rear bumpers, new front fenders, new headlights and new tail lights. This adaptation significantly enhances the presence of the new X5, making it look fresher and more elegant.” Hit the jump to read over the BMW press release.

  • Colorado’s New Renewable Energy Standard Among Nation’s Strongest

Though the pace of federal action on climate and clean energy issues continues to lag, states across the nation are keeping up the momentum with strong legislation on a diversity of clean energy fronts.
Colorado topped the list this week by adopting a renewable energy standard (RES) that requires 30 percent of the state’s energy to come from renewable sources like solar and wind by 2020. Colorado’s RES, which also promotes rooftop solar by requiring three percent of the renewable energy to be acquired through distributed generation, is among the strongest in the nation.

“I salute the dedication and commitment of all lawmakers who support the expanded use of renewable resources and cleaner-burning natural gas,” said Colorado Governor Bill Ritter in an op-ed that ran on Sunday in The Pueblo Chieftain. “The energy of our future generations will be cleaner and more sustainable because of their vision and their leadership. Colorado’s workforce will usher in a new era of economic opportunity to compete in and be a leader in a fast-changing world.”

Not only will the Colorado RES create strong demand for renewable energy, it also includes several provisions that will ensure that clean energy jobs are good jobs. One provision requires that a certain ratio of workers on solar installation projects be certified solar installers. According to Charlie Montgomery of the Colorado Environmental Coalition, who is also active with the Colorado Apollo Alliance, community colleges and apprenticeship programs in the state will prepare workers to take the certification test available through the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP). Certified workers bring a high level of competency to their work and can usually demand higher pay than uncertified workers.

“This new law will provide safe, quality photovoltaic installations and create green careers for Colorado’s working families,” said Mary Broderick, renewable energy and marketing agent with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 68, which will help train a new generation of solar installers.

The bill also requires Colorado’s Public Utilities Commission (PUC) to consider job quality and community economic impacts when it considers proposals to build new electricity resources. Whereas in the past, the PUC was required to analyze a proposed project’s cost effectiveness, now the PUC must also consider such factors as the project’s ratio of in-state workers to out-of-state workers; the availability of long-term career opportunities; and the wages, health care and pension benefits being provided by the utility or company proposing the project.

Click here to read the bill.

“By working together, labor and the environmental community have proven that we can build a new cleaner energy economy and ensure that working families thrive at the same time,”  said Carmen Rhodes, executive director of FRESC, the organization that convenes the Colorado Apollo Alliance

    IMPACT-Like Legislation Proposed in Wisconsin

In his January State of the State address, Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle announced the creation of the Wisconsin Green to Gold Fund, a $100 million revolving loan fund to help manufacturers move into clean energy production or improve their energy efficiency. “This is not some pie in the sky,” Doyle said in the address. “Anyone who says there aren’t jobs in the clean energy economy had better open their eyes.”

This Thursday, State Rep. Cory Mason, whose district has been hit particularly hard by manufacturing job losses, introduced the legislation that authorizes the Green to Gold Fund. According to the Wisconsin Department of Commerce, which will administer the fund, the initial capital will come from a combination of existing State Energy Program dollars Wisconsin received through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), future Wisconsin Energy Independence Funding (funding currently administered by the Department of Commerce that goes toward clean energy manufacturing and research and development), and by streamlining existing resources.

Wisconsin will also be well positioned to receive additional federal funding if U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown’s Investments for Manufacturing Progress and Clean Technologies (IMPACT) Act is adopted. The IMPACT Act would authorize $30 billion to establish state-level revolving loan funds – similar to the Green to Gold Fund – to help small and medium-sized manufacturers retrain workers and retool facilities for clean energy production. It requires states to contribute 20 percent of the federal grant amount, a provision Wisconsin should be poised to comply with.

Provisions identical to those in the IMPACT Act were included in the American Clean Energy and Security Act passed by the U.S. House of Representatives in June 2009, and the Apollo Alliance has been working to ensure IMPACT’s inclusion in the soon-to-be-introduced Senate climate and clean energy bill.

Representative Mason’s Green to Gold bill would authorize the Wisconsin Department of Commerce to issue loans to manufacturing businesses for any of the following activities: implementing energy efficiency measures in their facilities; retooling to manufacture products that support the green economy; expanding or establishing domestic clean energy manufacturing; or creating or retaining jobs engaged in the preceding activities.

“I hear from manufacturers in my district and around the state who say they would love to have a more efficient boiler or they’d love to make wind turbine parts, but they don’t have the start-up capital,” said Rep. Mason. “They can’t just take the money they’re using to run their plant and use it for something else. Right now financing is tight. The Green to Gold Fund is going to fill that need.”

“Wisconsin has a long history of manufacturing strength, and we are increasingly attracting manufacturing companies in the new, clean energy economy,” said Rosemary Wehnes of the Sierra Club, who sits on the steering committee of the Wisconsin Apollo Alliance, which brings together labor, business, environmental and community groups to advocate for clean energy and good jobs. “This initiative will help us realize the potential of clean energy for Wisconsin. Investing in companies that want to improve their energy efficiency or retool to make clean energy products just makes sense, both for the economy and for the Wisconsin workers they will hire. We’re happy the Governor is proposing this, and encouraged that Rep. Mason is taking it one step further to make sure the jobs this initiative will create are good, family-supporting jobs.”

Construction of the Blythe facility employed roughly 240 union workers over the course of three months, and the plant now employs 296 electricians to carry out its daily operations, all of whom are members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 440.

*The Missouri Apollo Alliance is sponsoring a business roundtable event this coming Tuesday in Kansas City about the economic benefits of bringing clean energy businesses to Missouri. Imagens do novo sedã versão 2011

  • Gartman: I’m Impressed With Gold, Despite It Trading Under $1100 An Ounce

    dennisgartmancnbc.png

It’s no secret that Dennis Gartman is bullish on gold and has been for some time now.

The thing about Gartman is that he goes long in foreign currencies, not US Dollars. He admits that while support for gold in US dollars is weakening, it appears to be strong in foreign currency terms.

And he expects that to continue. With Europe in trouble, other countries (like, say, China) will “move toward gold as a replacement for the EUR.”

Adds Gartman: “As we write, gold in EUR is trading just under €825. A week ago it was precisely the same level, whereas gold in US dollar terms is this morning nearly $25/ounce weaker.”

  • BMW Series 1 Fuel Cell Hybrid Electric Car Announced

UTC Power has announced that their 5 kW fuel cell is being used inside a new BMW Series 1 Hybrid electric car. The unveiling this week was during the 25th anniversary BMW ZT celebration in Munich, Germany.

UTC has been working on this fuel cell since 1999. According to UTC Vice President, Ken Stewart, “From a fully frozen state, the fuel cell is half way to full power in less than 30 seconds. The system uses UTC Power’s proprietary ambient pressure technology, which does not require a compressor to deliver air to the cell stack. This results in a quieter, more efficient system.”

So far, BMW has not come forward with many details about the Series 1 fuel cell hybrid vehicle (a similar vehicle is pictured). Back in December 2009, BMW had said they are scaling back operations, pulling engineers off the BMW Hydrogen 7 to work on their line of hybrid vehicles because of the depressed overall car sales.

But, at that time, I had also speculated that BMW wasn’t suspending or discontinuing its hydrogen program but changing direction to fuel cell vehicles. Now, why would I make this assertion? After all BMW has been developing dual fuel, gasoline and liquid hydrogen cars with internal combustion engines (ICE) since 1979 when the BMW 520h was unveiled.

But cryogenic hydrogen hasn’t caught with the other automakers or the H2 fueling station designers like compressed hydrogen gas has. This is not to say that BMW will abandon liquid hydrogen and ICE’s altogether. But, the BMW Series 1 fuel cell vehicle shows that the automaker is willing to go in a new direction.

In 2001, BMW rolled out a prototype Mini Cooper with an H2ICE system. In 2009, BMW announced that 500 MINI E battery electric vehicles would be distributed for field trials mostly in California. What is missing now, is the Mini Cooper fuel cell hybrid electric vehicle. How about it BMW are you up to this task? The BMW Series 1 fuel cell hybrid electric car is a good, fresh start for the company and a step in the right direction. Now, let’s see what their second step may be.

Coming down the pipe in Texas’s capitol city of Austin is an effort by the City’s Human Rights Commission to establish a Teen Court:

The court system for youth in Travis County may not be operating in the best interest of those who find themselves caught up in it. The Austin Human Rights Commission is calling for city, county and school leaders to create an integrated youth court to deal with teens going through the legal system. Commission Chair Lisa Scheps says right now, the youth deal with six different court systems that have more than 25 judges. Scheps says now the teens just wind up back behind bars without ever breaking the cycle.

    • identify and assess current and future needs for the courts to be more effective in achieving child-welfare outcomes of safety, permanency, well-being, fairness and due process;

Barack Hussein Obama has set himself and his party clearly against the great majority of the American people. I’m trying to make up my mind if it’s supreme hubris, stupidity or just ineptitude that would lead Obama to say something sure to inflame an already raging populace. Given there is some very serious and growing resistance to his agenda, you’d think he’d tone down the rhetoric somewhat.

It seems that now that the left is ginning up as much anti-patriot sentiment as they think we will swallow, they feel safe in throwing down the gauntlet. They’ll get all the resistance they can handle and more come November.

A word to the new Conservative Republican leadership. Do not allow the DeMarxist agitprop machine get ahead of us on this issue of all the ‘hate’ messages supposedly put out against the Congressional Democrats, though someone put a bullet through a window at Eric Cantor’s campaign offices. We can safely assume that that one wasn’t one of ours. The left pulls this crap all the time. Time after time our leadership has ceded the ground to them. They have to be called on their stuff… each and every time.

They pulled it with the Clinton administration and their ghost war against ‘the militias’, and because no one had the courage to call them on it a runaway Justice Dept. under an alcoholic predatory lesbian, Janet Reno, resulted in Ruby Ridge and the murders of three innocent people.
