  • Musikalische Stühlen: Mercedes shifts AMG boss to van division, Tuscaloosa manager to AMG

Mercedes-Benz is shifting some of their management, resulting in an intriguing game of musical chairs. The principal appointment has Volker Mornhinweg (pictured above left) leaving his position as head of the AMG performance arm to take control of Mercedes-Benz’ van division. While seemingly a strange or unfortunate move for Mornhinweg on paper, the van division is very important to the company, and further, Daimler has a history of cycling rising executive stars through different branches in the company in order to give them a good “10,000 foot view” of the firm’s operations – exactly the sort of experience that would be useful in one’s future board members, say.

Of course, the butterfly effect of an appointment like that within such a hierarchical organization as Daimler AG results in endless ripples in the proverbial pond: Someone has to vacate his position to make room, and another has to take the vacated position, which in turn leaves another position open and so on and so forth. In this case, the announcement includes two other shifts in senior personnel. On the one hand, you have Dr. Wolfgang Bernhard, outgoing van guru, who moves up to the management board of Daimler AG and will oversee Mornhinweg’s work.

Meanwhile, to succeed Mornhinweg at the head of AMG, Daimler has appointed Ola Kaellenius (pictured above right). With experience in Mercedes’ F1 racing program, Swedish-born Kaellenius might be an ideal candidate to take up the reins at Mercedes-Benz AMG GmbH while the division’s portfolio shifts away from big engines to smaller and more efficient, but no less powerful units. But wait a second, what was Kaellenius doing until now? He was running the company’s plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where Mercedes assembles the M, R and GL-Class crossovers.

So who will take over at MBUSI, as the plant is known? As if to still the waters, Mercedes has yet to announce that appointment. But of course it’s only a matter of time. Full details in the press release after the jump. Top tip, Oliver!

  • 2011 Ford Mustang V6 to lap Bristol Motor Speedway 1,000 laps on a single tank

A little less than a year ago, the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid attempted to travel 1,000 miles on a single tank of gas and ended up going a total of 1,445.7 miles on a trip from Mount Vernon, Va. to Washington, D.C.

Well, Ford is at it again but this time, instead of going 1,000 miles, FoMoCo will attempt 1,000 laps on a single tank of gas at Bristol Motor Speedway in the new 2011 Ford Mustang V6. The event will feature a team of Ford engineers and celebrities attempting to highlight the Mustang V6 as the most fuel-efficient sports car by circling the half-mile NASCAR ring 1,000 times – or more than 500 miles.

Click here to get a price quote on the 2011 Ford Mustang.

“We all know how much fun it is to drive Mustang, but in today’s market it’s also about fuel economy,” said Jamie Allison, director, Ford North America Motorsports. “By going 1,000 laps or more on one of NASCAR’s most popular tracks, we expect to show that when it comes to Mustang, you can be mean and green.”

Ford is also letting you in on the action by letting you guess how many laps the 2011 Mustang V6 can make around Bristol – so go over here to guess and you can win a 2011 Ford Mustang.

Refresher: The 2011 Ford Mustang V6 is powered by the 3.7L V6 Ti-VCT making 305-hp and 280 lb-ft. The 2011 Ford Mustang GT is powered by a 5.0L 4-valve Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing (Ti-VCT) V8 engine producing 412-hp with a peak torque of 390 lb-ft. Transmission choices for both models include a 6-speed automatic with a 6-speed manual offered as standard.

    Press Release

FORD SET TO TAKE 1,000-LAP CHALLENGE AROUND BRISTOL MOTOR SPEEDWAY ON ONE TANK OF GAS IN 2011 V6 MUSTANG

DEARBORN, Mich., March 21, 2010 – Since first coming off the assembly line 45 years ago, Mustang has always been known for its sheer power and speed. Now you can add another element to that reputation – best-in-class fuel economy.

One year after the Ford Fusion Hybrid, America’s most fuel-efficient mid-sized sedan, successfully eclipsed 1,000 miles on a single tank of gas, Ford will put its new 2011 Mustang V-6 on a similar quest as it attempts to run 1,000 laps on a single tank of gas at Bristol Motor Speedway on June 23, and they’re inviting consumers to be involved.

A team of Ford engineers and celebrities will attempt to prove Mustang’s ranking as the most fuel-efficient pony car to date by circling the half-mile NASCAR bullring at least 1,000 times – more than 500 miles – and highlight the 3.7L V-6 model’s best-in-class 31 mpg.

Fans can be involved in the Mustang 1,000-Lap Challenge by entering a national sweepstakes in which they will guess the total number of complete laps that Mustang will complete during the Challenge. Ford has designed a specific website for fans, who can register their guess at www.Mustang1000LapChallenge.com between March 21 and June 23, 2010.

The grand prize winner will be randomly selected from all those who correctly guess the number of laps completed during the Challenge and will take home a 2011 Mustang V-6 coupe.

The Mustang 1,000-Lap Challenge will begin the morning of Wednesday, June 23 with a team of Ford test drivers continuously circling the track billed as “the world’s fastest half-mile” until the vehicle runs out of fuel with a goal of surpassing 1,000-lap mark.

“To go at least 1,000 laps at Bristol means we’ll be going twice as far as the NASCAR drivers do during their races, and we’ll be doing it without a pit stop,” said Fritz Wilke, Mustang Brand Manager.

The V-6 Mustang will be no stranger to Bristol by then, having been selected to serve as pace car for this weekend’s Food City 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event.

This event is a follow-up to last year’s challenge in which Ford NASCAR driver Carl Edwards participated in driving the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid a total of 1,445 miles (an average of 81.5 mpg) on a single tank of gas around Washington, D.C.

  • JSesh 3.0

    JSesh, release notes

    Dear all,

I have the pleasure to announce version 3.0 of JSesh. Thanks to M. Thomas’ work, the full Manuel de Codage (or, in other terms, the “extended library”) is now covered by JSesh (save a few signs here and there, which will be fixed in the near future). So JSesh 3.0 is essentially JSesh 2.13, but with complete X, Y and Z families. I thought however that a full coverage of the Manuel de Codage warranted a new version number.

    Best regards,

    S. Rosmorduc

  • ACS:Law Now Using Dubious Legal Theories To Threaten Slyck.com

Just last week, we were talking about how UK firm ACS:Law, who has been condemned by UK politicians and ISPs, was still pushing forward with its efforts to send out tens of thousands of threatening “pre-settlement” letters. These letters attempt to scare recipients into paying up to avoid a potential (though rarely filed) lawsuit claiming copyright infringement, based on quite weak evidence (an IP address collected by DigiProtect after DigiProtect purposely puts a file online). The whole thing has been called a “scam” by Lord Lucas in the UK, and lawyers at the firm that initiated this practice, Davenport Lyons (and who apparently provided ACS:Law with its original documents) were recently referred to a disciplinary committee by the Solicitors Regulation Authority.

The Solicitors Regulation Authority claim that it’s also investigating ACS:Law, and they may now have one more thing to investigate. It appears that ACS:Law’s latest move is to threaten the US-based blog Slyck.com with a defamation lawsuit, based on some of the comments in Slyck’s forums. For a variety of reasons, this threat was entirely groundless. First, it seems that the comments in question were joking statements of opinion, rather than actual libel — such as calling ACS:Law’s plan a “wank plan.” How is that libelous?

Second, of course, Slyck is based in New York, and is protected from defamation suits based on comments by its users thanks to Section 230 of the CDA. Furthermore, Slyck has even greater protections thanks to New York’s own anti-libel tourism statute, the Libel Terrorism Protection Act, which makes libel lawsuits in foreign countries against US journalists unenforceable. The good folks at the EFF have stepped up to support Slyck in responding to ACS:Law, and it appears that, for the time being, ACS:Law has gone quiet.

Of course, in theory, ACS:Law could push forward against Slyck anyway, and could potentially win in the UK. But given the mass scorn being heaped upon ACS:Law right now in the UK, combined with a recent push in the UK to rewrite defamation laws to prevent these sorts of questionable lawsuits, if ACS:Law does decide to push forward, it may find that the backlash is a lot more damaging than some anonymous person in a forum calling its plan a wank plan.

  • Life Without (Electrical) Power (Part Three)

    PART THREE OF THREE PARTS

If you have not read Part One and Part Two, read them first by taking the links.

In Part One, I mentioned the scare campaign of an impending Global Warming/Climate Change ‘catastrophe’, and how Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions, especially from coal fired power plants are the cause of this, and how Governments, instead of doing everything in their power to ’save us’ from this alleged situation are instead only seeking to pass legislation to make money from those emissions. This threat of ‘catastrophe’ suits that money making agenda, and in an effort to accentuate their claim that this vast new tax will in fact save us, they will actively pursue every option to ’shoot down’ anything that might get in the way of that.

In Part Two, I detailed how the finger pointing at China, saying that they need to cut back their emissions, is indeed not the whole story, and that any legislation, which will only have minimal, if any effect at all, will be totally negated by what China does in an effort to Industrialise. That industrialisation process will also bring electrical power to the near one billion people who currently have no access to electrical power at a Residential level.

This Part Three will look at the role the United Nations (UN) has in all this, how they also joined the finger pointing at China, and how they are also trying to generate revenue from this ‘catastrophe’. They do however have a major problem, and that problem is completely of their own making   …

In 1992, the UN formed their Framework Convention on Climate Change. (UNFCCC) In 1997 they adopted and passed The Kyoto Protocol. This agreement called for a legally binding decision to lower CO2 emissions to a level of 6% below what those emissions were in 1990, all except the U.S. that is, because they were directed to a target of 7%. Countries then lined up in their droves to sign the Bill, and then give a second and infinitely more important signature to ratify the Bill, thus binding that signing Country to all that the Protocol required. A few Countries did not give that second signature, largest of those being the U.S. and Australia. Australia, with great fanfare, and under a new political administration then gave that second signature in December of 2007, leaving the U.S. as the only hold out. This effectively meant that George W. Bush could be blamed for this, but what needs to be realised is the the Clinton Administration before it was the Administration that did not give that second signature. In fact The U.S. Senate voted 95-0 not to send the Bill to ratify it to Congress, and it was never even presented. That same Administration at that time had as the Vice President one Al Gore, who is now such an advocate for this Climate Change Debate.

So, looking at that Kyoto Protocol, those emissions reductions should not be the only thing we should be looking at in respect of what is happening right now in 2010. The number of Countries who did in fact sign up to Kyoto is 192 Countries.

The UN then categorised those 192 Countries into three different areas.

Annex I countries – Industrialized countries and economies in transition. (There are 40 Countries in this list.)
Annex II countries – Developed countries which pay for all costs of developing countries. (This is a list of 23 Countries taken from Annex 1 Countries)
Developing countries. (These are the remaining 152 Countries from the original list of 192 Countries)

I want you to take particular notice of the short text immediately following ‘Annex II Countries where it says ….. ‘which pay for all costs of developing Countries’.

The Protocol then says that Developing Countries are not required to reduce their emissions until Developed Countries supply enough funding and technology. Exempting those Countries from emissions reductions means that no restrictions are placed in the way of that Country industrialising, because emissions are strongly linked to industrial capacity. Part and parcel of industrialisation is the need for electrical power, and as a by product of that, electrical power will then become available to the vast populaces of those Countries who currently have no access whatsoever to electricity at a residential level, something all of us who live in the Western World already have, and take for granted now as a staple of life.

Now it becomes patently obvious why all those developing Countries showed so much feeling at Copenhagen. Any new accord that might have been reached would have the perception of being watered down from the Kyoto protocol, passed in a time long before this current Climate Change Debate has been muscled into the forefront of the World’s view.

The view at Copenhagen most probably centred fully and wholly around that one short statement from Kyoto, that text after Annex II Countries. That Kyoto protocol was a legally binding document already in existence and signed by everyone which stated that Developing Countries need not reduce their emissions, and that the list of 23 Countries was to pay ALL their costs, that of everything with respect to those emissions. Any new agreement would most certainly water that down, with respect to the emissions reduction targets set at that time, which we now know will never, ever, be reached.  Of most import though was probably the watering down of that funding part of the text. The perception at Copenhagen was ….. ‘why should we agree to anything new, which could mean that we lose what is already a legally binding fact’.

Fingers of blame were pointed specifically at China, and in Part Two, I explained how erroneous that was, but let’s look at the case as it was when Kyoto was passed in 1997.

In 1997, China was in fact one of those Developing Countries. At that time, China was producing very little electrical power, in fact less than 30% of what the U.S. was producing at the time, while now, barely 12 years later they are producing almost the equal of what is being produced in the U.S. China is rapidly industrialising and has almost got to the stage where they are in fact driving the World’s economy. Because of that, they are constructing power plants at a huge rate, and coal fired power plants are foremost among them. One thing that does result from this is that the vast population of China is finally gaining access to power at that residential level, and still, possibly one billion people in China have no access to electrical power. Because those coal fired plants are the largest emitters of CO2, China has just this year become the largest emitter on the Planet of CO2.

This makes it easier to point the finger of blame at China, and say, almost in the vein of a ‘tut tut tut’, that they should be showing some responsibility by reducing those emissions. This is played up for all its worth, without explaining the truth of the matter. It is being done because some Countries are seeking to introduce legislation to impose a new tax on those emissions, and the perception is that, well, if we do this, shouldn’t China be ‘brought to heel’ as well. As China brings itself into the 20th Century (not the 21st that we live in, because we have all had that electrical power for so long now) they are building new plants to facilitate this, and in fact, while the World average for power supplied from coal fired sources is 87%, China’s is running at only 62%, and the U.S. coal fired level is at 45%.

That short text in the original Kyoto is where the UN was going to get its vast amounts of money to try and implement emissions reduction, and technological advances for those Developing Countries. That source of funding would be levied on those 23 Annex II Countries. It stands to reason that if those Countries then have to supply that immense funding to the UN, then they will need to find a source of money to fulfill their obligation.

Now perhaps we can see why some of those already developed Countries are seeking to introduce legislation to raise that money, hence the introduction of legislation of what amounts to a huge new tax on those emissions, and that money would then be paid to the UN to fulfill that obligation.

Now perhaps you get the inkling of an idea as to why the UN, and those other Countries were pointing the finger of blame at China prior to and during the Copenhagen Conference.

China, as well as all as the bulk of all those other 169 Countries saw any watering down of the requirements of Kyoto as a direct attack on them, because after all, Kyoto was an already legally binding document that they had all signed up to. That is why no agreement was reached at Copenhagen. Those major Countries who did in fact offer to ’sweeten the pot’ with the addition of Billions of Dollars made no difference whatsoever, because Kyoto offered them infinitely more money on virtually every front.

So, the UN dug itself into a hole that now would seem problematic if they can ever get out of.

Those other Countries in the still developing World have the UN effectively over a barrel. They see no reason whatever to back away from something that promises so much, while at the same time delivering so very little.

China is in the position of being categorised as still developing and anything new they sign up to will see that process of industrialisation severely curtailed if they are not allowed to keep constructing coal fired power plants, and as I have been so careful to explain, this is not the whole story.

Almost one billion people have no electricity. If as some Administrations dream, and legislation to introduce a new charge on CO2 emissions is in fact passed and comes into power, it will virtually ensure that coal fired power plants are taxed out of existence, because bean counters everywhere will be telling Authorities everywhere that the new costs far outweigh what will be coming in and it would be cheaper to close the plant down rather than keep it running.

Then as those plants close down, the lights will start winking out all across the developed World, as the levels of power required for 24/7/365 are not there anymore. As those lights wink off, so do workplaces, commerce, homes, everything that requires an absolute amount of power.

Then, as I mentioned back in Part One, there will be a catastrophe, only this time not just the ramped up possibility of catastrophe, but an actual catastrophe.

Then we will all see what those billion people in China see, and the same for India and every other Third World Country where there is no power. We will see what they see.

    Life without electrical power.

Wait for the political fallout as that starts to happen.

Meanwhile, while the UN protests that those emissions are what will be killing us all because of the effects of Global Warming/Climate Change, they are actually doing something about it.

One of the arms of the UN, the World Bank is in fact funding the construction of, and wait for it ….. coal fired power plants, and here’s the link to that story

Never come between a Government, or an organisation and a great big pot of money lest they point their finger at you and complain.

Either the Third World, China included, is allowed to industrialise and bring electrical power to their people, or we go back and join them.

You think now of your life without access to electrical power.

  • A visit to the Ashmolean Museum

For those of you who have read the blog over the last year you’ll probably have noticed the occasonal report about the massive refurbishment at the Ashmolean Museum (Oxford, UK), which lead to it being closed for a period. I went with a friend to see it on Thursday, to see the archaeological sections.
The first thing to highlight is that the Egyptology section hasn’t changed. One or two artefacts seem to have been moved around but that’s all. The refurbishment did not include the four ancient Egyptian galleries are much as they were. Sadly the wall of Amarna relief fragments is no longer illuminated and they are almost impossible to see.

We had a look at other archaeology sections that interested us both. The new design is modern, clean and attractive. The presentation of the objects themselves has changed considerably and I am very much in two minds about how successful that it actually is.

My friend described the presentation as taking an art gallery approach, which really hits the nail on the head. Instead of showing lots of artefacts and giving a wide view of a place the new presentation takes the most attractie or remarkable of the collection and, with beautiful lighting, presents them as highlights of an area. Information boards help to describe the galleries, but there is a loss of the sense of variety and depth which the rather untidy layout surviving in the ancient Egyptian galleries still maintains.

I found the new Ashmolean quite beautiful but much less informative. I would have liked to have seen a much better balance between attractive presentation cabinets and the volume and richness of displays you would expect to see in a museum so closely tied in with a research institution like Oxford University.

I suppose that there’s never going to be a way of pleasing everyone with such a dramatic re-invention.

  • Obamacare

They thought he would “govern from the center?” Are they for real when they say that?! Did they think all the talk of his Marxist ideals and risque associations were just hyperbole…or did they just get caught up in the hype? I blame them the most. Those that say, “I voted for Bush and I voted for Obama” like that’s something to brag about. Like that doesn’t make them colossal morons. And I blame those that abstained from voting –which basically gave Obama their vote. Those that thought McCain would be just as bad. I blame them too. For this:

“The new government agencies that will be created as the result of Obamacare will worsen the quality of American medical care by restricting physicians and hospitals to use their best judgment, according to Rep. Tom Price, R-Ga., a physician and chairman of the Republican Study Committee.

In fact, he says, the bill would create 159 new government agencies to regulate insurance and medical care for Americans.

Writing for AOL News, Price says in an op-ed that the healthcare overhaul being contemplated by House Democrats will sacrifice “the quality of health care that has made this nation’s practice of medicine the envy of the world.” (source)

Not to mention the crippling cost.

The Republicans will have a last ditch effort with legal maneuvers, but even Stupack caved to the pressure.

  • Racials Slurs? I Highly Doubt It.

My grandfather is known to say, “Believe none of what you hear and only half of what you see.”

Tea party members know that they have been labeled racists. They know the press and the Hollywood elite are out to diminish their commitment, message and intelligence by making their concerns about the revamping of their country nothing more than anger over a half Black man in the White House. There is no way they would indulge the Jeannine Garafalos and Bill Maher’s by proving them right on the capitol steps. Please.

Great Story (with video) on how the MSM reported this (like it was fact) and FNC reported it (as allegations) given THIS:

“Fox News also reported yesterday that it had contacted Capitol police to find out whether the incident had been reported or was being investigated. Capitol police confirmed that it was neither reported, nor was it being investigated. These are pertinent facts, which the public has a right to know. Yet, the Washington Post relied only upon the claims made by these black lawmakers and Barney Frank to frame the allegations as established fact.”

Are Tea Party activists angry? Of course they are. Of course WE are I should say. The thought of your country being changed forever without ONE Republican vote can be a bit unsettling. So Garry Trudeau, you droll windbag and intellectual property thief…it IS indeed taxation without Representation

  • Grass is also Green by Viv Forbes, Carbon Sense Newsletter

Article Tags: Peter Spencer, Via Email, Viv Forbes

You may have heard of Peter Spencer, the desperate Australian farmer who went on a hunger strike to draw attention to the fact that government bans on clearing vegetation had stolen his assets and destroyed his business. Peter is just one of many Australian farm families reduced to desperation and even suicide by seizure or sterilisation of their land to satisfy the voracious green god.

The most massive injustice occurred a couple of years ago, when, as a sacrifice to the Kyoto god, the federal government conspired with state governments to ban vegetation clearing on all property, even freehold. This was done in an underhand way to allow the government to seize carbon credits from landowners without paying compensation.

Many well meaning people, while not happy with the tactics and the refusal to pay compensation for property seized or devalued, think that there will be some environmental or climate benefits to come from all this.

    Generally there are none.

FoMoCo’s new Global Performance Vehicles department is bringing together Ford’s finest high-performance engineers from Europe and the U.S. to work on faster versions of the new 2012 Focus and 2011 Fiesta.

“If you can capture enthusiastic young drivers, they become loyal buyers for years to come,” said Mitch McCullough, editor of New Car Test Drive and a longtime contributor to Sport Compact Car. “The young performance driver is frequently the neighborhood expert. Friends ask their advice before buying a car. If a company builds a quality, reliable, affordable, performance car, good word of mouth can affect sales of their other models.”

Many enthusiasts have long criticized Ford for not paying enough attention to its American SVT performance group but the new organization should change all that.

Ford has already confirmed that the global 2012 global Ford Focus will get a version of the 4-cylinder Ford EcoBoost engine. A high-performance Ford Fiesta, most likely powered by a 4-cylinder EcoBoost as well, has also been recently spotted driving around Dearbon.

    Stay tuned and stay excited.

Kalabsha is the biggest of the Nubian Temples after Abu Simbel.
It was originally located at Talamis, which has been submerged by
    the waters of Lake Nasser.
It is a Roman period temple built during the reign of Augustus and was dedicated to
Nubian deity Mandulis/Merwel, who is usually shown as a human
crown composed of ram’s horns, plumes and sun disks. He is also shown
in the temple as a falcon with a man’s head.
It was divided into 13,000 blocks for its removal to the island of New
Kalabsha, which it shares with other re-homed monuments.

  • The New Rift In Europe: France And Germany Increasingly At-Odds Over Greece And EU As A Whole

    Merkel Sarkozy

Angela Merkel faces pressure from the right not to bail out Greece, and so she’s been insistent that no direct aide would be forthcoming from Germany. At most, she’s offered “support,” whatever that is.

But the politics are different in France.

Sarkozy’s party just took a beating from the left in regional elections, and Sarkozy is not keen on letting the IMF bail out one of his fellow EU-members.

Dean Popplewell at Oanda notes that the greenback is higher again today, as investors fret about EU stability. See, every one of these rifts helps to highlight the untenability of the EU regime. They shine the light on the contradiction of a shared monetary base with separate political blocs. Until everything’s papered over or resolved, there just isn’t much reason to be excited about the euro.

  • Toyota shareholders headed to court over fallen stock prices

Unhappy Toyota shareholders are heading to court with lawsuits claiming that the company executives deliberately misled investors and its customers about the seriousness and depth of accelerator problems in over 8.1 million of its vehicles.

About three proposed class-action lawsuits have been filed by investors say that the company gave false assurances that the unintended acceleration problem was a simple floor mat accessory recall, helping keep its stock price up. Investors say that the Japanese automakers executives provided misleading information through press releases and conference calls with stock analysts.

The lawsuits say that many top executives in Toyota have been aware for nearly a decade of faulty electronic throttle issues causing its vehicles to go wildly out of control but covered it up to protect the company’s reputation.

The cases filed by shareholders are just a part of many costly lawsuits coming towards Toyota over acceleration issues.
