  • Unemployment Insurance: Social Program?

“…Millions of Americans have been forced to rely on unemployment payments for extended periods as the nation struggles through its longest period of high joblessness in a generation, and critics are taking aim, saying that the Depression-era program created as a temporary bridge for laid-off workers is turning into an expensive entitlement.

About 11.4 million out-of-work people now collect unemployment compensation, at a cost of $10 billion a month. Half of them have been receiving payments for more than six months, the usual insurance limit. But under multiple extensions enacted by the federal government in response to the downturn, workers can collect the payments for as long as 99 weeks in states with the highest unemployment rates — the longest period since the program’s inception…” (source)

Maybe I am unclear on how UI actually works, but is this actually an entitlement or is it draining money now because it’s run by the government and is mismanaged?

Reagan once said that “Unemployment insurance is a pre-paid vacation for freeloaders,” but I wonder if he knew the maximum you can get is $500. You could make $3000 a week at your job, get laid off and only get $500 in UI…who would willingly choose that?

Take The Man, he’s been working full time for 23 years. That means an employer has been paying into the program based on his wages for 2 decades and he’d never filed for UI…so if he needs it, it should be paid for and then some after investing 23 years worth of revenue made on him…right? Or is that nullified by the amount of people that abuse the system? Or do I misunderstand how it works?

  • Talk Radio Spawning Mean Girls?

I’m sure I have blogged about this in the past, but the single thing that shocked me the most when I began teaching was how mean little girls were…and at what an early age. For two years I was subbing in 8 different elementary schools for K-6th grade. Those eight schools spanned the entire race, religion and socioeconomic spectrum. The worst as far as ‘mean girls’ bullying was the school in the most affluent area. Duel income, professional families and a string of 9 series Mercedes in the drop off queue. Those girls were brutal.

“Everyone but YOU got an invitation to my pool party. YOU can’t come because EVERYONE thinks you’re weird and that you dress weird. Crying won’t help. It only makes you uglier.” ~5 1/2 yr. old

    True story folks. Kindergarten.

Since I don’t remember this kind of thing happening in elementary school, I’m always interested in the dichotomy of this (seemingly) growing phenomenon…and was shocked to see what this article proposes as a possible cause:

“…Bullying, at least among girls, starts at a young age; whether this is new is a subject of debate among behavioral specialists.

Some believe that the popularity of shows such as “Gossip Girl’’ and the talk radio shout-fests that kids listen to from the back seat of the car have fanned the flames, which are spread face-to-face and through cyberspace.

“I think what’s different is how uninhibited it [bullying] has become. There’s just a real lack of empathy,’’ said Deborah Weaver, executive director of a self-defense and safety program for Boston girls, who has worked with more than 6,000 girls between 8 and 18…” (source)

Oh, and that school I was just telling you about…in the most liberal zip code in the school district…

  • Crisis Garden?

During the course of my internet travels, I keep coming across websites lauding the ‘fact’ that Glenn Beck has lost all advertisers. Strange because he still has a show. Two actually…one on TV and one on radio. FNC is not an altruistic endeavor, but a business so I’m assuming that if that were indeed true that Beck couldn’t get advertisers Rupert Murdoch and Roger Ailes would have sent him packing…

So, I’ve been taking notice of the commercials. For the most part it seems to be the same advertisers that are with FNC throughout the day…with one exception.

Survival Seeds. Yes, you read right.

In case of emergency this will be enough seed for one acre of garden and will be the “ultimate barter item”…for just $149 you’ll get 22 varieties of veggies for your crisis garden and survive when grocery store shelves are barren.

You have to love Capitalism and American ingenuity!

  • Soaring Stock Market, And Housing Rebound Means The Wealth Effect Is Back!

    happy home homeowners homebuyers

Evidence continues to pile up that the economy is on the mend — jobs are being created, consumers are starting to spend again — even if it is just steroid or sugar-induced, and thus destined to end in another crash.

One reason for this: the wealth effect is coming back.

    Kelly Evans at WSJ explains:

Spending growth has since resumed—a source of surprise and widespread skepticism given the steep contraction in consumer credit and the high 9.7% unemployment rate.

The wealth effect, or the confidence boost that comes when people’s assets rise in value, helps explain this puzzler. Household net worth rose by about $5 trillion through September from its first-quarter trough, aided by the stock-market rebound and stabilization in home prices across much of the country. Thursday’s flow-of-funds report is expected to show a further increase during the last three months of 2009.

Our guess is that the rebounding market has done a lot more for consumer confidence that the housing market, which, frankly, still remains in the toilet. On the other hand, that’s a reason to be optimistic. If that market turns around sometime in 2010, that’s another shot of “stimulus” for the consumer still bottled up.

  • New GE X-Ray Detector Brings Portability To Digital Radiography

The 13 lb. device provides immediate imaging capability through laptop for a range of applications

Billerica, Mass. – 9 February 2010. — Weighing just 13 lbs (6 kg), the DXR250V is the latest lightweight and portable digital radiography tool from GE Sensing & Inspection Technologies. In the past, the use of digital radiography (DR) has been limited due to size, weight and connectivity of the equipment. With DXR250V, DR users have the benefit of shorter shot times and minimal radiation exposure, in applications that were previously limited to computed radiography or film. The DXR250V can easily connect to a laptop computer and produce images for instant review with GE’s Rhythm® software, providing significant gains in productivity. Key applications include field inspections in the oil and gas, aerospace and power generation sectors.

“The benefits of digital radiography, such as eliminating the chemicals and reducing radiation exposure through shorter exposure times can now be used in a much wider range of applications with the DXR250V,” said Shana Telesz, product manager at GE Sensing & Inspection Technologies. “The ability to use digital radiography in areas where it was previously impossible is an important step in the conversion from film to digital radiography.”

The DXR 250P and DXR 250V uses a 200µm pixel pitch detector and has one of the largest active scanning areas at 16in x 16in (41cmx41cm). It features GE’s unique Quality Assurance Phantom, which reports various detector statistics and parameters to ensure continuous high performance. When used in conjunction with the Rhythm DR acquisition software, a number of several frames can be are then taken and averaged to reduce noise and display a crisp, premium image on the laptop screen. The inspector can also take advantage of other Rhythm features by printing a report on-site through Rhythm Report or transmit the data to a remote Rhythm Review station for further investigationanalysis by another expert. If image retention is required, users can also take advantage of Rhythm Archive for long-term bulk storage and archiving of large numbers of digital radiographs. The new detector outputs is DICONDE compliant data and with all the technique information and details of location, date and time and inspector is saved with the image. With no moving parts, theDXR 250P and DXR 250V requires minimal service.

  • PIMCO’s El-Erian: You Fools Don’t Realize That The Sovereign Debt Crisis Goes WAY Beyond Greece

    mohamed el-erian pimco

We’re being silly if we presume that the sovereign debt crisis is merely a matter of solving the Greek problem, according to PIMCO’s Mohammad El-Erian in an FT op-ed:

Today, we should all be paying attention to a new theme: the simultaneous and significant deterioration in the public finances of many advanced economies. At present this is being viewed primarily – and excessively – through the narrow prism of Greece. Down the road, it will be recognised for what it is: a significant regime shift in advanced economies with consequential and long-lasting effects. To stay ahead of the process, we should keep the following six points in mind.

And yes, that means The United States, though not only The United States.

    Here’s a killer stat:

US sovereign indebtedness has surged by a previously unthinkable 20 percentage points of gross domestic product in less than two years. Even under a favourable growth scenario, the debt-to-GDP ratio is projected to continue to increase over the next 10 years from its much higher base.

Many metrics speak to the generalised nature of the disruption to public finances. My favourite comes from Willem Buiter, Citi’s chief economist. More than 40 per cent of global GDP now resides in jurisdictions (overwhelmingly in the advanced economies) running fiscal deficits of 10 per cent of GDP or more. For much of the past 30 years, this fluctuated in the 0-5 per cent range and was dominated by emerging economies.

  • How Does Copyright Apply To Your Kids’ Monster Drawings?

Justin Levine has an interesting blog post up about a book I hadn’t heard of, called The Monster Engine. The author, Dave Devries, took children’s drawings of monsters, and turned them into paintings that use the identical line structure of the kid’s drawings (he projects them on the wall and then draws over them). Apparently, Devries’ work is quite popular, and people have talked about it on the internet for years:

Seems pretty cool. But Levine is wondering about the copyright issues involved in all of this:

    Given the fact that:

    1. There is no doubt that the children’s original doodles are protected by copyright for their entire life, plus 70 additional years.
    2. There is no doubt that Devries’ paintings of the doodles are ‘derivative works’ stemming from the original creations of the children.

Do you believe that Devries should be forced to get formal copyright releases from each and every one of the kids in question? Do you think he has done so? If so, should they be able to repudiate their copyright agreement when they turn 18 since many jurisdictions allow minors to repudiate contracts signed before they reach 18? If so, should they be able to take Devries’s work out of circulation?

Do you think that the children should all share in the royalties from books, art and showcases that Devries produces for the rest of their lives (and beyond – for 7 decades)? Do you think that is in fact the case of what is going on? If Devries hasn’t gotten a copyright release and/or isn’t paying royalties, do you feel that he is somehow “exploiting” these kids or “stealing” from them?

These are pretty serious questions — because under copyright law today, this book is trouble, and that’s unfortunate, because it looks like a lovely book. My guess would be that Devries actually had to get permission from the parents, but do parents have the right to sign away the copyright on a child’s work? And do those children then have the right to terminate that agreement at a later date? Perhaps people think the likelihood of kids later terminating the agreement is quite low — and maybe they’re right. But what would happen if a kid no longer wanted to be associated with that artwork?
