High speed fuses for semiconductor protection RAPIDPLUS
Semiconductors are electronic components extremely sensible to overloads and short-circuit, therefore they cannot be protected with general purpose fuse-links. For this reason there are ultra rapid fuse-links for this specific purpose, with very fast melting characteristics, low let-through energy values (I2t) and adequate selective coordination with protection devices upstream.
Typical application comprise protection of semiconductors (diodes, thyristors, triacs, etc) used in power rectifiers, UPS, converters, motor drives (AC and DC), soft starters, solid state relays, photovoltaic inverters, welding inverters and any application where it i necessary to protect semiconductor devices.
RAPIDPLUS range comprise three sizes with dimensions 10×38, 14×51 and 22×58, with rated currents between 4A and 100A and a rated voltage of 690 V AC. Sizes 14×51 and 22×58 are available also with striker, for use in fuse bases with micro-switch. There are two operating classes aR and gR.
Made of ceramic tube with high withstand to internal pressure and thermal chock, that allow a high breaking capacity in a reduced physical space, as well as a good thermal conductivity. End caps are made of silver plated copper for optimal contact with fuse base. Melting elements are made of pure silver and have a special design to obtain low I2t values and reduced arc voltages, as well as good aging resistance. These fuse-links meet IEC/EN60269-1 and IEC/EN60269-4 standards and RoHS directive 2002/95/EC.

More Comfort in the Cab
Under the hood of a tractor, in the protective cab of an excavator, or integrated in the design of the driver seat – gas springs and dampers from STABILUS are used abundantly in the manufacture of modern utility vehicles. Their duties are manifold: They will make lifting heavy body parts easier, assist in the easy opening of cab doors and windows, provide a safe, shock-absorbing seating position for the operator, and make handling maintenance covers more convenient.
Currently, it’s mostly the hydropneumatic gas springs from the LIFT-O-MAT and BLOC-O-LIFT lines as well as the hydraulic dampers from the STAB-O-SHOC line that allow engineers to design more ergonomics, safety, and convenience into vehicles and trailers. Thanks to a variety of models and a large selection of fitting elements within these product lines, STABILUS can provide manufacturers with options for handling even the most unusual applications or challenging mounting positions. Going far beyond the functions of a normal LIFT-O-MAT gas spring, a HYDRO-LIFT type gas spring will securely hold a cab window, roof light or maintenance cover in several positions. And with the ELEKTRO-LIFT, electrical functions can be added via a switch – such as engine compartment lighting.
While the non-locking gas springs of the LIFT-O-MAT family are used mainly for lifting, lowering, moving and adjusting body lids, engine hoods and cab windows, the locking BLOC-O-LIFT gas springs are the mounting element of choice for designing height-adjustable steering columns and individually adjustable driver seats. The hydraulic dampers of the STAB-O-SHOC line provide comfort and shock absorption in driver seats and are functional elements in trailer couplings and V-belt tensioners. The dampers are suited for operating temperatures of -40° C to +130° C and, depending on the model, can be installed both in a position-dependent or in an omnidirectional manner.
With its many types and models, the STABILUS standard program will always provide the right gas spring or suitable damper for a wide variety of possible installation positions and designs in utility vehicle construction. For highly unusual cases, the design engineers at the Koblenz-based company will also develop customer-specific solutions. With its expertise accumulated over many decades, STABILUS is the right partner for implementing particularly innovative adjustment and drive systems for the manufacture of construction, agricultural and forestry machines. -

Infolytica to Release Updated MotorSolve for Induction Machines
folytica Corporation announced today that a major update to MotorSolve IM will be available in April 2009. A new fully automated finite element analysis (FEA) results module will be included with the software which will solve critical performance parameters accurately.
MotorSolve IM uses a template-based interface for modeling induction motors or generators, allowing for rapid prototyping of different designs. The new results module will extend the existing features by providing key performance data.
“We refer to MotorSolve as an automated FEA design tool since the user doesn’t have to worry about the mesh or any typical post-processing tasks associated with FEA software” said Chad Ghalamzan, Marketing Manager at Infolytica Corporation “They select from an extensive list of performance indicators – quantities, charts, field plots, etc – what data they require. MotorSolve runs the automated FEA solver by handling all these ‘typical’ pre and post processing steps for the user, and produces the desired results as required.”

Red Drive – Keeping it simple
With the launch of Red Drive, Rotalink has driven down the development costs of smallscale DC motor control systems and significantly simplified motion control programming.
Smaller than a credit card, Rotalink’s Red Drive DC motor controller – with motor, gearbox and encoder – requires no complex programming to control all the variables associated with rotational or linear movement. Its simple Windows-based drag-and-drop flowchart style interface uses real world values such as seconds, revolutions and gearbox output rpm to control speed, acceleration, position, dwell etc., and to manage digital I/O connections for interaction with limit switches, sensors, LEDs, relays and similar signals.
Red Drive’s flowchart programming approach eliminates much of the complexity typically associated with motion control systems. Dragging readily understandable flowchart blocks for start, accelerate, compare, wait and so on onto a work area allows program structure to be established within minutes. With a click and drag, blocks are easily moved, added or deleted, repetitive sequences readily identified and grouped into subroutines, and variables manipulated for calculations and loop control. And, with no need to resort to Basic or C, programming is simplified and engineers have a single consistent development environment in which to work.

American Idol Contestants Have To Give Up Their Social Media Presence?
Apparently, you don’t just commit to handing over your music recordings if you enter American Idol, but now you have to give up your ability to build your own brand, as well. Hypebot alerts us to the news that American Idol contestants for the latest season were all forced to shut down their Facebook, MySpace and Twitter usage, and point everyone directly to American Idol’s own website instead. In an age when having a strong social media presence is important to career success for many musicians, this seems like quite a big trade-off.

PS3 Motion Controller Officially Called PlayStation Move
Sony announced at GDC2010 that the Playstation 3 motion controller is officially called the Playstation Move and will be available this Fall. The new controller, combined with the PlayStation Eye camera, can detect the natural and intuitive movement of the hand and reflect the precise movement within the game, and delivers a whole new entertainment experience on PS3.
They also announced a smaller additional device called the Playstation Move sub-controller, which doesn’t have a LED ball and is for more finely tuned movements. This would be more appropriate for FPS games, and Zipper Interactive has promised that SOCOM 4 can be played completely through with the Playstation Move. Every major publisher is going to make compatible games.
Sony will sell the Playstation Move controller individually and also include it in a PS3 bundle. Sony will also sell bundles in the Fall for less than $100 that includes the PlayStation Eye camera, PlayStation Move controller, and a game.
You will be able to use two Motion Controllers at once.
Sony showed off several motion controller demos during GDC 2010 that looked remarkably accurate, in game genres and games such as sports (archery, ping pong, tennis), FPS combat, family, and more. A new game called Move Party was demonstrated that gives players certain challenges they must complete on screen, such as painting a certain area.
They also showed off how the motion controller would work with the game LittleBigPlanet, which allows a player to use the DualShock controller and the Playstation Move together. The Playstation Move allowed someone to highlight an object and move or slingshot it to assist the Sackboy in progressing through the level.
The Playstation Move features an orb at the end which can glow in any of a full range of colors according to the RGB color model using light-emitting diodes (LEDs). As with the standard PlayStation 3 controllers, the Motion Controller will use Bluetooth 2.0 wireless radio communication, and a rechargeable internal lithium-ion battery. It will feature buttons on the controller, an analog trigger, and vibration-based haptic technology. In addition to providing a tracking reference, the controller’s orb light can be used to simulate aesthetic effects, such as the muzzle flash of a gun, or the paint on a brush.
