  • Report: Next Land Rover Defender due in 2014, may be a hybrid

A replacement for the Land Rover Defender, an SUV for which the word “venerable” could have been invented, has been given the greenest of green lights by parent company Tata. The now 62-year-old go-anywhere-and-then-some truck is expected in 2014, and is being worked on now under the codename Project Icon.

It looks like nothing has yet been decided about Project Icon other than its codename and its status in the line-up, which is at the very top. Coming up with a new retail name for the Defender line and finding a way to differentiate it from the previous model will be part of the work to be done, as well as coming up with a platform and powertrain. The current platform could be too heavy to serve for much longer in the face of stringent new European efficiency regulations.

The powertrain could be the biggest surprise of all, though: a hybrid is being suggested as a way to reap the typical hybrid benefits. Land Rover showed its Electronic Rear Axle Drive technology in a Freelander hybrid two years ago, in which a 288-volt motor with 34 to 47 horsepower and 147 foot-pounds of torque drove the rear wheels and could drive the front set when needed. If that happens, the words “Defender” and “hybrid” might be the most unexpected coupling of this decade.

  • STANDARD AUTOMATION COMPONENTS ACHIEVE MICRON POSITIONING ACCURACY

A new, fully automated, fine art infrared scanning system isn’t just a prime example of what modern technology can achieve. It also shows how a scientific tool with micron positioning accuracy can be created from standard industrial automation components. The system is the brainchild of motion control specialist, SmartDrive®. Working in league with the linear motion company, HepcoMotion®, it has optimised the process of infrared scanning, greatly extending the scope of the technology. And the benefits of the system aren’t confined to infrared. The system control and specifically developed image stitching software also enables distortion-free digital photographs of large works to be taken for further study and record. For the art conservation world this system represents a significant imaging breakthrough.

The SmartDrive system is called SatScan and as its name implies the technology mimics that used in mapping systems with the optics ‘flying’ over or across the subject. Imagine zooming around Manhattan in Google Earth. What you see are the square roof tops, no shear sides of adjacent buildings. This is because small images are taken from a perpendicular position and then stitched. SatScan works in a similar way by moving digital and infrared camera heads incrementally around the artwork using encoder technology to achieve precision positioning.

“We know the position of the carriage to within ±1 micron,” explains the system’s designer, Dennis Murphy, Managing Director of SmartDrive. “We’re achieving this from automation components with industrial tolerances of 100 – 200 microns. In scientific terms we are also using relatively low resolution, off-the-shelf cameras. But by acquiring a small field of view – maybe just an inch or two square – and holding it perpendicular to the painting we can take images that are completely distortion free.”

The first large scale SatScan is installed at the Hamilton Kerr Institute near Cambridge, a centre of excellence for conservation services that is world renowned for its work on tempura easel paintings. It provided the expert knowledge needed for the art version of the SatScan development and is now using the system on a daily basis. Infrared imaging is just one of a range of tools used by the Institute’s conservators and is primarily used to see any under-drawings on the canvas or to examine previous re-touching. For example it will show if an egg tempura painting has been retouched with oils.

  • Calif. crews search for missing teen formerly of Naperville

SAN DIEGO — Authorities and volunteers are widening a search for a 17-year-old missing in San Diego County after a registered sex offender was arrested in connection with her disappearance.

Some 1,400 volunteer searchers and more than 100 law enforcement officers failed to find Chelsea King on Sunday, but evidence was found that led to the arrest of 30-year-old John Albert Gardner of Lake Elsinore, Calif. some 75 miles to the north, San Diego County Sheriff William Gore told the Associated Press in an interview. King is a former resident of Naperville.

King disappeared on Thursday after going for a run near Lake Hodges at Rancho Bernardo Community Park in San Diego, a popular regional park full of running trails. Her car, with her cell phone and iPod inside, were found later that night.

Gore said investigators discovered physical evidence linking Gardner to the case. Gore would not elaborate on the nature of the evidence. He said they were holding out hope that she would be found.

Gardner was taken into custody at a restaurant in Escondido shortly after 4 p.m. Sunday and was being questioned Sunday night.

“This investigation is ongoing and specific criminal charges are still being determined,” Gore said at a news conference.

Investigators also suspect Gardner could be tied to a Dec. 27 assault on a female jogger from Colorado Springs, Gore said.

Gardner’s Riverside County residence was also searched Sunday, Gore said.

He was required to register as a sex offender because of a conviction for lewd or lascivious acts with a child under 14, the Megan’s Law Web site said.

It was not immediately clear whether Gardner has hired an attorney.

King’s parents continued pleas for her return and said the arrest offered them no relief.

“Nothing will change for us until our beautiful daughter, Chelsea King, comes home,” Brent and Kelly King said in a statment released through a family spokeswoman Sunday night. “We will continue searching for her, and we ask that all of you do the same until she’s back with us.”

Gore said the search for King and for further evidence would continue throught the night and expand beyond the park.

“There are several searches going on around the county,” Gore said. “We are going to refocus some of our search efforts.”

Chelsea King’s BMW was found in the park after she failed to return to her home in suburban Poway, Calif. on Thursday, sheriff’s spokeswoman Jan Caldwell said.

The search for the straight-A senior at Poway High School also took to the Internet, where a Facebook page generated more than 24,000 fans. A Web site was created at findchelsea.com.

USF1 petitions the FIA for a 1-year delay to enter the F1 World Championship – Click above to watch video after the jump

SpeedTV reports that things are not entirely amiss at USF1, the team just needs to rearrange some things a bit. After failing in its bid to get a car to the first race, then asking to skip to first four races, then being unable to merge with either Campos Meta or Stefan GP, what the team now wants is dispensation from the FIA to miss the entire 2010 season and pick up at the first race of 2011.

YouTube founder and team partner Chad Hurley is in on the request, and has promised to put up a seven-figure sum as bond if the FIA accedes. We’re all for USF1 getting on the grid, but if they can’t get a car on the track this year then who’s footing the bill to develop a car but not race this year then run next year? Follow the jump for a video on the latest reports. Thanks for the tip, Tom!

    Press Release:

TAG Heuer and Tesla Motors Launch Worldwide Partnership

To be unveiled this week at Geneva Motor Show, unique TAG Heuer Tesla Roadster commemorates Swiss brand’s 150th anniversary.

Pioneering luxury Swiss watchmaker TAG Heuer and electric carmaker Tesla Motors have teamed up in a worldwide partnership as the iconic Swiss brand celebrates its 150th anniversary.

On display at the Geneva Motor Show starting Tuesday is the 2010 TAG Heuer Tesla Roadster. This one-of-a-kind collector’s car includes a unique interior by Tesla Chief Designer Franz von Holzhausen, incorporating TAG Heuer avant-garde design elements and a specially designed center console due to host TAG Heuer’s cutting edge concept watch, to be revealed in Basel on March 18.

This car also features a TAG Heuer Meridiist mobile phone as well as a one-fifth second Heuer Limited Edition Stopwatch. This Swiss-made timepiece with mechanical movement pays tribute to the 1860 founding of the company and evoques the mythic revival of the brand’s vintage stopwatches.

The car’s exterior color scheme is Foucault Field Gray, embodying the innovative spirit of both companies. The design was inspired by the new TAG Heuer concept watch, a technical milestone in mechanical movements, which brings technologically advanced art to life through motion.

The 2010 TAG Heuer Tesla Roadster will remain at the Tesla booth during the public show days, March 4-14 at the Palexpo-Geneva conference center. The car will then be driven to Baselworld, the world’s largest watch exhibition, for a special event March 18.

    Relentless focus on technological innovation

Since its founding in an artisan’s workshop in the Swiss Jura, TAG Heuer has become one of the world’s best-known luxury brands — maker of avant-garde watches, eyewear and premium mobile phones for refined consumers around the globe.

TAG Heuer, a star brand from the luxury group and worldwide leader Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy (LVMH), also has deep roots in the automotive sector. Company founder Edouard Heuer received in 1911 the patent for The Time of Trip, the first car dashboard chronograph, followed in 1933 by the Autavia — the first dashboard timekeeper for both automobiles and aviation. The benchmark in cutting-edge chronographs and timekeeping technology since 1860, TAG Heuer is the watch brand that can claim the longest and strongest association with motor sports and dream cars. Both watches and chronographs are inspired and driven by motor sports, from Formula One to GT cars.

“TAG Heuer has a rich history and expertise with the world’s most prestigious racing teams — but this is the first ever partnership we’ve forged with an electric sports car company,” said Jean-Christophe Babin, President and CEO of TAG Heuer. “We believe that high-performance drivers are increasingly searching for products that are efficient, socially responsible and stylish. TAG Heuer and Tesla are two of the few companies arleady achieving these ideals today.”

Tesla Motors began developing an electric sports car in 2004 and remains the only automaker selling highway-capable electric cars. The Tesla Roadster accelerates faster than nearly any other supercar yet is twice as energy efficient as a Toyota Prius — the only car that delivers supercar performance guilt-free, with zero tailpipe emissions and a carbon footprint dramatically lower than any comparable sports car.

Based in California’s Silicon Valley, Tesla has delivered more than 1,000 cars to consumers in 21 countries. Advertising Age magazine recently named Tesla one of America’s “hottest brands.” The Tesla Roadster is quickly becoming the must-have car among Hollywood celebrities, European royalty and socially responsible trendsetters worldwide.

“Engineers at both TAG Heuer and Tesla understand intuitively that technology — whether worn on your wrist or driven on the road — can help us live better while we tread more lightly on this planet,” said Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

The CEOs of TAG Heuer and Tesla, along with celebrity customers of both companies, will launch their next collaboration in style on March 18 at a party during Baselworld 2010. This nine-month project, commemorating TAG Heuer’s 150th anniversary, will have worldwide reach and will raise awareness of technological innovation to consumers on three continents.

  • Deon Jackson’s shot tops Arch Madness moments

Deon Jackson’s improbable last-second shot that gave Bradley a victory in the 1996 Missouri Valley Conference semifinals was selected as the top moment in Arch Madness history by a vote of the league’s fans.

In a two-month online voting campaign, fans chose from a list of 33 MVC flashbacks to determine the top 20 Arch Madness moments since the first Valley tournament was played at Kiel Auditorium in 1991.

Jackson’s 3-pointer gave Bradley a 64-62 victory over Southwest Missouri State on March 3, 1996.

Jackson’s shot — more of a heave — came after he chased a loose ball with his back to the basket 23 feet away. He scooped it up, twisted in midair and launched a two-handed prayer.

It marked Jackson’s first 3-point field goal in 46 games, and it sent the regular-season champion Braves to the title game.

In addition to top moments in St. Louis, fans also chose the top 10 players in Arch Madness history.

Kyle Korver of Creighton was named Arch Madness Most Outstanding Player. He was joined on the all-time all-tournament team by Bradley’s Anthony Parker and Illinois State’s Osiris Eldridge and Rico Hill.

Among top moments, Jackson’s shot was followed by Nate Funk’s performance in leading Creighton to the 2007 tournament title. Funk scored 51 points in the final two games.

Bradley’s victory over Northern Iowa in the 2007 quarterfinals was the No. 11 moment. Will Franklin hit a 3-pointer with 3 seconds left to give the Braves a 51-48 victory. BU’s J.J. Tauai tied the game with 57 seconds left before Franklin’s winner.

    ISU had three top-20 moments:

At No. 4 was Osiris Eldridge’s play in the 2009 tournament. He averaged 19 points and became the second player in history to earn Most Outstanding Player honors on a losing team as UNI took the title in overtime.

At No. 7 was the game-winning shot by Spring Valley’s Shawn Jeppson in the 2002 quarterfinals. Jeppson hit a twisting 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Redbirds a 64-63 victory over Drake.

At No. 14 was ISU’s 69-65 comeback victory over UNI in the 1997 semifinals. Rico Hill scored 29 for the Redbirds. Down by nine late in the first half, ISU closed the half on a 12-2 surge, ignited by coach Kevin Stallings’ stare. Angry about a 14-8 disparity in fouls, Stallings stared at game officials for an entire media timeout.

  • School evacuated after locker fire

Fire in a locker led to the evacuation of a Northwest Peoria school on Monday afternoon.

Peoria firefighters were called to Mark Bills School, 6001 N. Frostwood Parkway, about 1:50 p.m. Monday.

Fire in a second-floor locker was quickly knocked down, first by school staff using a fire extinguisher and then by firefighters, Peoria Fire Department Division Chief Gary Van Voorhis said.

About 250 students and school staff escaped safely from the District 150 school, Van Voorhis said.

The fire was confined to the one second-floor locker, but nearby lockers also were damaged by the extinguisher and water. The second floor sustained some smoke damage, but firefighters were ventilating it with fans.

The fire took place near the time school was dismissed for the day, and classes were expected to continue uninterrupted on Tuesday, Van Voorhis said.

Students with lockers on the second floor were not allowed back to their lockers to retrieve their coats on Monday, Van Voorhis said.

The cause of the fire was being investigated.

  • Metallica Sued Napster For This?

David Levine has a post up looking at Metallica’s revenue streams last year. Apparently, the band made the vast majority of its money from concert revenue — bringing in $22.8 million. It made $1.6 million from album sales. As Levine notes:

Hmmm…think it would make a lot of difference to the world if they lost the $1.6 million from the albums? Without copyright they’d only make $22.8 million from touring…You might almost think it would be worth it to them to give the recorded music away for free to promote their concerts…

Or, hell, give away the tracks and promote other stuff as well. Selling music directly (relying on copyright) is a tiny business compared to the opportunities elsewhere. And, of all the bands out there, Metallica should clearly recognize that.

  • How The GOP Unleashed A Monster, And Brought Its Jim Bunning Problem Onto Itself

    jim bunning

The Kentucky senator who is causing havoc for his own party was antagonized by GOP leaders in 2009.

Jim Bunning, the oldest Republican in the senate, cited pressure from other Republicans in his decision not to run for a third term in 2010. In a statement from his office, Bunning said colleagues had done “everything in their power to dry up my fundraising.”

There are many reasons colleagues might have sought Bunnings retirement. In 2004, he barely won election in Kentucky in a campaign highlighted by blunders such as describing opponent Daniel Mongiardo as looking “like one of Saddam Hussein’s sons” and being “limp-wristed.”

In 2006, TIME called him one of America’s five worst senators, calling out the former MLB pitcher for showing “little interest in policy unless it involves baseball.”

So what do you do with a loose cannon? You definitely don’t piss him off, especially when he has time left in office.

During a voice vote last week, Bunning single-handedly blocked the extension of unemployment benefits for 1.2 million Americans and a measure to fill a $10 billion budget gap in Medicare funding. Although most Republicans would agree with Bunning’s stance, absolutely no one would join him in stiffing doctors and in kicking thousands of Americans to the curb.

But Bunning has nothing to lose anymore. He’s just getting warmed up.

  • 2010 Geneva Preview: Porsche 918 Spyder Concept is a plug-in hybrid supercar

Porsche has surprised the automotive industry on the eve of the 2010 Geneva Motor Show with the new Porsche 918 Spyder Concept, a plug-in hybrid open-top with a mid-mounted V8. Now that that has you excited – let’s get right to the details.

Power for the two-seater 918 Spyder Concepts comes from a 3.4L V8 making more than 500-hp mated to electric-motors sitting on the front and rear axle with an additional output of 218-hp. Power is driven to the wheels by Porsche 7-speed Doppelkupplungsgetriebe PDK transmission allowing the 918 Spyder Concept to go from 0-62 mph in 3.2 seconds with a top speed of 198 mph.

The driver is allowed to choose from four different driving modes including E-Drive, Hybrid, Sport Hybrid and Race Hybrid. The E-Drive mode is for running the car on pure electricity, with a range of 16 miles, while Hybrid mode allows the 918 Spyder concept to use both electric-motors and the 3.4L V8 to maximize fuel-efficiency depending on road and driving conditions. The Sport Hybrid mode uses both drive systems with a focus on optimizing performance, while the Race Hybrid mode is focused on performance with the highest level of dynamics on the track.

The Porsche 918 Spyder Concepts adds to the automaker’s lineup of hybrid debuts for the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, joining the Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid and the 911 GT3 R Hybrid race car.

Follow the jump for the press release.

    Porsche 918 Spyder Concept:

    Press Release:

Today, on the eve of the Geneva Motor Show, Porsche unveiled an ultra-efficient, low-emission, mid-engine super sports car featuring hybrid and electric drive technology.

The 918 Spyder concept combines high-tech racing features with electric-mobility to offer a fascinating range of qualities. For example, it is planned to provide an emission level of just 70 grams of CO2 per kilometer on fuel consumption of only three liters/100 kilometers (equal to approximately 78 mpg U.S.), which is truly outstanding, even for an ultra-compact city car. This car, however, is intended to offer the performance of a super sports car with acceleration from a standstill to 100 km/h in just under 3.2 seconds, top speed of 320 km/h (198 mph), and a lap time on the Nordschleife of Nuburgring in less than 7:30 minutes, faster than even the Porsche Carrera GT.

The 918 Spyder is one of three Porsche models with hybrid drive making their world debut at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. This trio ñ made up of Porscheís new Cayenne S Hybrid SUV with parallel full-hybrid drive, the 911 GT3 R Hybrid race car with electric drive on the front axle and a flywheel mass battery, and the two-seater high-performance 918 Spyder mid-engined sports car with plug-in hybrid technology ñ clearly demonstrates not only the great bandwidth of this new drive technology, but also the innovative power of Porsche as a genuine pioneer in hybrid drive.

The highly-innovative 918 Spyder concept car combines Porscheís Intelligent Performance philosophy with the high-technology from motorsport, with classic but modern design to make a truly convincing statement.

Innovative powertrain combines race-bred V8 engine with electric drive

This open two-seater is powered by a high-revving V8 developing more than 500 horsepower and a maximum engine speed of 9,200 rpm as well as electric motors on the front and rear axle with overall mechanical output of 218 horsepower (160 kW).

The V8 combustion engine is the next step in the evolution of the highly successful 3.4- liter power unit already featured in the RS Spyder racing car and positioned mid-ship, in front of the rear axle, giving the car excellent balance and the right set-up for supreme performance on the race track.

Power is transmitted to the wheels by a seven-speed Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) transmission that feeds the power of the electric drive system to the rear axle. The front-wheel electric drive powers the wheels through a fixed transmission ratio.

The energy reservoir is a fluid-cooled lithium-ion battery positioned behind the passenger cell. The big advantage of a plug-in hybrid is that the battery can be charged on the regular electrical network. A further point is that the carís kinetic energy is converted into electrical energy fed into the battery when applying the brakes, thus providing additional energy for fast and dynamic acceleration.

Driverís choice of four distinct driving modes

A button on the steering wheel allows the driver to choose among four different running modes: The E-Drive mode is for running the car under electric power alone, with a range of up to 25 km or 16 miles. In the Hybrid mode, the 918 Spyder uses both the electric motors and the combustion engine as a function of driving conditions and requirements, offering a range from particularly fuel-efficient all the way to extra-powerful.

The Sport Hybrid mode uses both drive systems, but with the focus on performance. Most of the drive power goes to the rear wheels, with Torque Vectoring serving to additionally improve the carís driving dynamics.

In the Race Hybrid mode the drive systems are focused on pure performance with the highest standard of driving dynamics on the track, running at the limit to their power and dynamic output. With the battery sufficiently charged, a push-to-pass button feeds in additional electrical power (E-Boost), when overtaking or for even better performance.

With the hybrid drive system offering this wide range of individual modes and applications, the 918 Spyder is able either to achieve lap times comparable to those of a thoroughbred racing car, or the extremely low emissions and high fuel economy figures of a plug-in hybrid.

Advanced body structure and design offer more than just good looks

Like the drivetrain, the lightweight body structure of the Porsche 918 Spyder also bears out the carís DNA carried over directly from motorsport: The modular structure with its monocoque bodyshell made of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFP) and liberal use of magnesium and aluminum not only reduce weight to below 1,490 kg, or 3,285 lb, but also ensure supreme driving precision thanks to a high level of torsional stiffness.

Reminiscent of highly successful, legendary racing cars such as the Porsche 917 and the current Porsche RS Spyder, the 918 Spyder, with its design concept so typical of Porsche arouses powerful emotions. The combination of racing car dimensions, clearly structured design with perfectly balanced surfaces, and innovative details throughout, creates an ideal synthesis of form and function ñ following Porscheís design DNA.

The smooth balance of tradition and progress gives the car a powerful stance on the road. Variable aerodynamics, typical of Porsche, ensures both visionary and traditional highlights especially around the rear spoiler. The striking rear hoods extending out of the headrests, in turn, not only fulfill an aerodynamic function on the 918 Spyder, but also accommodate retractable air intakes with a ram air function.

High-tech interior provides glimpse into the future

The driver and passenger are not only embedded in contoured sports bucket seats but also form part of the cockpit, which provides a synthesis of efficient functionality and ergonomic high-tech operation. Additionally, the cockpit offers a glimpse at the potential interior architecture of future Porsche super sports cars. The three free-standing circular dials for road speed (left), engine speed (middle) and energy management (right) would appear to come directly from a racing car in the ë60s, bearing out that unique philosophy of driver orientation so characteristic of Porsche.

The center console rises up towards the front in the 918 Spyder and houses a touch screen for intuitive control of the carís functions, serving to reduce the number of visible controls and maintain the principle of direct operation.

The control units relevant to the driver are mainly concentrated on the three-spoke multifunction sports steering wheel, while the variable driving modes are supplemented by a switch enabling the driver to call up various drive programs and serving as the push-to-pass button for E-boosting. Instrument illumination, finally, varies from green for the consumption-oriented running modes to red for the performance-oriented driving programs.

The Porsche 918 Spyder concept also comes with further innovative functions such as the Range Manager. After being activated in the Center Display, the Range Manager uses the map in the navigation system to present the remaining range the car is able to cover, naturally allowing the driver to influence that range through the appropriate choice of power and performance.

In cities with environmental alert areas the Range Manager also states whether the driver is able to reach a certain destination on electric power alone.

Applying this information and using further info on the availability and location of special energy filling stations, the driver is then able to choose his personal style of driving as well as the right battery charge and filling strategy.

Offering a unique combination of extremely low fuel consumption, supreme performance and long electric range, the Porsche 918 Spyder concept represents an essential milestone in Porscheís strategy on the way to genuine electric-mobility.

  • Ron Paul Exposes Bizarre Spending Habits at the Federal Reserve & State Department

    Bizarre Spending Habits

    by Ron Paul

Last week I had the opportunity to bring up spending and transparency in two important hearings. On Wednesday I questioned Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke on some highly questionable uses of funds at the Federal Reserve, and on Thursday I asked Secretary of State Hillary Clinton about exorbitant spending at the State Department.

It is extremely important to continue bringing these issues up, especially in light of our difficult economic times, when so many are out of work, as I saw up close in my district at the Oceans of Opportunity Job Fair in Galveston two weeks ago. Those who are working live with the fear of losing their jobs as they struggle to pay bills. Meanwhile, Washington is talking of increasing their taxes, something voters were promised, clearly and adamantly, would not happen in this administration.

Government also struggles with money, but the struggle centers on how to get more of your money into government coffers. Rather than expanding the Federal budget in the face of economic downturn, we should be focusing on eliminating waste and being the very best stewards of public funds that we can possibly be. Most businesses have had to streamline and cut back in order to survive, and so it is only fair for our government to do the same.

Instead, the State Department is building a $1 billion embassy in London, the most expensive ever built. The plans even include surrounding it with a moat! I asked the Secretary of State about this massive expenditure, and she claimed the funds for this were coming from the sale of other properties. If money can be saved, then save it! Don’t spend it on such an extravagant structure overseas when people back home can’t find jobs or pay bills. Not only that, but the administration has committed to doubling foreign aid. That is one promise that is likely to be kept, despite our economic crisis.

I asked Chairman Bernanke about Federal Reserve agreements with foreign central banks and if he had had any conversations about bailing out Greece, which he flatly denied. However, he recently announced that the Federal Reserve will be looking into Goldman Sachs’ derivative agreements with Greece. Goldman Sachs, as we know, has “too big to fail” status with the Fed, so it is conceivable that any Greece-related catastrophic losses at Goldman Sachs will once again be passed on to taxpayers.

Perhaps most sinister are the revelations in Robert Auerbach’s book “Deception and Abuse at the Fed” that $5.5 billion was sent to Saddam Hussein in the 1980s – money that allowed Iraq to build up its military machine to fight Iran prior to the first Gulf War, the very machine turned against our brave men and women within just a few years! I agree with Bernanke’s characterization of this – it is indeed “bizarre” to think that Americans at the Federal Reserve could engage in this type of behavior, which some have called “criminal”. However, Professor Auerbach served as a banking committee investigator, and as an economist at the Treasury Department and at the Federal Reserve. His claims are hardly without merit. In fact, they are solidly backed by court rulings and other evidence.

The lack of accountability and transparency in our leaders on government spending is appalling. We simply must keep pressing these issues and voicing our objections if we are ever to reverse our failed policies.

Good, we were hoping BMW would answer the latest challenge from Audi in the online battle of boast. Audi started up again the dormant war of words between these two German automakers a couple weeks ago by patting itself on the back for winning three Car and Driver comparisons in a row, and now BMW is striking back by bragging about its mixture of efficiency and vehicle dynamics sans compromises.

Hit the jump to watch the 1:25 video for yourself. Unfortunately, Team Motor Werks didn’t get to throwing down with Audi until the very end of the spot, which takes place in an elementary school classroom. And even when the guys and gals at BMW took their swing, we’re afraid it just grazes the four-ringed chin of its luxury car rival. Let us know which automaker you think scored the more direct blow by chiming in on the post-jump comments.

  • Suspect in Smart kidnapping deemed competent

SALT LAKE CITY — A federal judge on Monday ruled that the man charged in the kidnapping of Elizabeth Smart is competent to stand trial, paving the way for him to face charges nearly eight years after the girl was snatched from her bedroom.

U.S. District Judge Dale Kimball wrote in a 149-page ruling that Brian David Mitchell, 56, “does not presently suffer from a mental disease or defect that impedes his rational and factual understanding” of the proceedings against him.

A court hearing is scheduled on March 26 to set a trial date.

The ruling follows a 10-day competency hearing held for Mitchell last year, where experts who testified split in their opinions about Mitchell’s competency.

The prosecution’s expert, New York forensic psychiatrist Dr. Michael Welner, concluded the Mitchell suffers from a range of disorders, including pedophilia, anti-social and narcissistic personality disorders, but said he was not psychotic or delusional.

The key expert for the defense, Dr. Jennifer Skeem, diagnosed Mitchell with a delusional disorder and said he was incompetent.

But the judge agreed with Welner, who said Mitchell was faking mental illness to avoid responsibility for wrongdoing. Welner described Mitchell as an “effectively misleading psychopath” who has duped those around him into thinking he is incompetent.

During many court proceedings Mitchell has been removed from court because he breaks into song, disrupting proceedings.

“The court agrees with Dr. Welner that Mitchell’s singing in court is a contrivance to derail the proceedings and create the false impression that he is unable to control his behavior,” Kimball wrote.

Mitchell’s court-appointed attorney, Robert Steele, did not immediately return a call from The Associated Press on Monday.

Carlie Christensen, the acting U.S. Attorney for Utah, applauded the ruling Monday, calling it a significant step in holding Mitchell accountable.

“Elizabeth Smart, her family and this community have waited many years for resolution of this case,” Christensen said.

Mitchell was indicted in federal court in 2008 on charges of kidnapping and unlawful transportation of a minor across state lines.

Smart was 14 when she was kidnapped from her home in 2002. She was found nine months later, in March 2003, walking a suburban Salt Lake City street with Mitchell and his now-estranged wife, Wanda Barzee.

Smart, now 22, testified for the competency hearing in October, saying she was raped after a marriage ceremony staged by Mitchell.

  • Daley: City will prevail in handgun case

Mayor Richard Daley says he’s optimistic Chicago will prevail against what he calls the gun industry’s challenge to the city’s handgun laws.

He spoke at a news conference Monday, a day before the U.S. Supreme Court hears arguments on the constitutionality of Chicago’s handgun ban.

Daley says cities and states should be able to decide how best to protect their citizens. He fears the case before the Supreme Court could cause needless legal challenges to other laws nationwide.

Chicago Police Superintendent Jody Weis attended the same news conference.

He says his biggest concern if Chicago laws are struck down is the threat his officers could face every time they respond to a domestic disturbance.

  • Four charged in Elgin drug bust

Four men face drug and weapons charges after Elgin police executed a search warrant Friday night in the 100 block of Village Court on the city’s east side, police said.

Elgin Deputy Police Chief Jeff Swoboda said the 8:30 p.m. search yielded 160 grams – more than five ounces – of cocaine, a loaded 9 mm handgun and more than $1,000.

“We were able to determine that narcotics were being sold out of the residence,” Swoboda said. “It’s another great arrest by the detectives in our narcotic unit.”

Abel Flores, 39, of the 100 block of Village Court, Elgin, was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, Swoboda said.

The felony charge carries six to 30 years in prison upon conviction.

Flores’ bond has been set at 10 percent of $92,000 and he also was wanted on warrants from Elgin police and Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Winnebago County, Swoboda said.

Luis Diaz, 19, and Carlos Barona, 34, both of the 100 block of Village Court, face felony charges of unlawful use of weapon and possession of a controlled substance, respectively, Swoboda said.

Their bonds are 10 percent of $3,000, Swoboda said.

Angel Flores, 55, of the 1300 block of Cummings Road, Caledonia, was charged with possession of a controlled substance, Swoboda said.

His bond is 10 percent of $5,000, Swoboda said.

All four men are due in court on March 10, Swoboda said.
