  • A fine combination! – New safety gate system includes all safety functions

    All safety functions in one – that’s what’s on offer from the new Pilz system for secure safety gate monitoring: At just 45mm wide, PSENsgate is a combination of electronics and mechanics, enabling you to achieve the highest category using a single system. In the smallest possible space, PSENsgate combines safety gate monitoring, safe guard locking with escape/auxiliary release, E-STOP, request and acknowledgement button plus a range of additional functions.

    With PSENsgate, all safety functions and control elements for safety gates are available in just a single ready-to-install system. The integrated E-STOP enables you to economise on safe inputs. And thanks to the optional enable switch, the safety gate system is also easy to expand.

    Increased security for safety gate monitoring

    Coding helps to provide the highest protection against manipulation and defeat. A closing lock can also be implemented through a padlock on the bolt. As a broken pin and broken bolt are safely detected, PSENsgate offers increased security for machines on which the potential risk is particularly high. This also includes protection against hazardous movements and overrun.

    PSENsgate can be used in applications up to PL e of EN ISO 13849-1, SIL 3 of EN/IEC 62061 and Category 4 of EN 954-1. It’s even possible to connect additional safety gate systems PSENsgate, the non-contact safety system PSENslock and coded safety switches PSENcode in series, without reducing the high level of safety.

    Safety gate systems PSENsgate can be used in all industries, anywhere that safety gates have to be opened repeatedly for assembly or operational purposes.

  • Five charged after alleged ethnic slur sparked Naperville brawl

    Five people were charged with fighting after an alleged ethnic slur ignited a brawl in downtown Naperville, police said.

    Catherine Maloney, 24, and Daniel Maloney, 28, both of the 1600 block of Dublin Drive; Ryan Maloney, 30, of Oswego; and Elizabeth Kartheiser, 21, and Jason Thomas, 23, both of Lombard, all were charged with fighting following the brawl on Sunday near Van Buren Avenue and Washington Street, authorities said Friday.

    Police said Kartheiser and Thomas were walking together in the area when they crossed paths with the Maloneys.

    One group yelled an ethnic slur, leading Daniel Maloney and Thomas to begin the fight, but Kartheiser, Catherine Maloney and Ryan Maloney jumped into the scuffle, police said.

    Catherine Maloney was injured in the melee and taken to Edward Hospital in Naperville, where she was treated for nonlife-threatening injuries, police said.

    Ryan Maloney allegedly tore an exterior mirror off a silver Jeep Commander belonging to Kartheiser, and was subsequently charged with criminal damage to a vehicle, police said.

    All five were taken to the Naperville police station for processing and released on bail.

    Officials would not say what the insult was that started the brawl and who actually said it.

  • Geneva Leakage: Ferrari 599 Hybrid caught on stage

    Filed under: , , , , , ,

    Ferrari 599 Hybrid – Click above for image gallery

    With just a few days separating us from the Geneva Motor Show, the list of surprises continues to dwindle. The latest victim is the much-anticipated Ferrari 599 Hybrid which the automaker has confirmed will appear in Switzerland next week.

    The shots appear to have been taken from the show stand, so there’s no hard information to go off of yet. What we do know is that Ferrari will employ a version of its Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) that originally debuted during the 2009 Formula 1 season on the 599. The system captures energy normally lost to the flywheel under braking, sending a boost of energy to the wheels when the driver hits a steering wheel-mounted button. Judging by the size of the battery pack, it’s doubtful that the 599 will be able to operate on electric power alone. We’ll find out soon enough, but until then, check out Ferrari’s green beastie in the gallery below. Top tip John.

  • Carmel honors its state gymnastics champs

    Carmel Catholic High School’s state championship girls gymnastics team was given a hero’s welcome Friday by the school and the village of Mundelein.

    Three celebrations were held during three lunch periods. Athletic Director Andy Bitto was the master of ceremonies, as the team members were honored one by one. Mundelein Trustee Jim Nutschnig also said a few words.

    Head coach Sarah Mikrut Doyle, who was a gymnast on Carmel’s 1992-93 state champion gymnastics team, marveled at how everything has come full circle.

    “To be part of Carmel’s first state championship team in 1992 and then to be able to help these girls get this experience to be state champions in 2010 is amazing,” she said.

    Carmel’s girls gymnastics record is impressive: three state titles; one second place and one third place at state; 12 trips downstate in all; six sectional titles and 12 regional titles.

  • Multi-tasking is here……finishing, slotting & roughing with only one tool!

    R45 STF Semi Roughing Endmills

    The R45-STF (Special Tooth Form) carbide endmill is a semi-roughing tool, eliminating the use of finishing endmills. Due to its unique chip-breaker design, which produces an excellent work piece finish and enables higher speeds and feeds, the R45-STF produces short chips, even in longer chipping materials.

    The high performance four flute geometry, with unequally indexed cutting edges, provides for superior tool stability and lower cutting forces, when combining TiAlN coating effectively.

    The 45° chamfer of the outer corners in the cutting edges offers increased strength.

    A recent case study conducted, shows first hand the benefits of this unique tool design. A precision component manufacturer used a diameter 12mm to produce steering dampeners for motorbikes from lead bright steel, in a HAAS VF2 machining centre under dry conditions. At 5000 RPM (Vc = 188m/min) & 1000mm/min feed-rate (f= 0.05mm/tooth), taking a range of roughing & finishing cuts with only one tool! The amount components achieved with other brands of endmills were 40 parts under these conditions. The R45-STF carbide endmill was able to achieve 150 parts, leaving the production staff at MSC Products amazed!

  • Ready for an early bloom? Think again!

    Photo: Green Right Now

    From Green Right Now Reports

    If you’re pining to see some buds on trees, new leaves on bushes, or fresh signs of life in the flower bed…chill.

    Yes, it has been a miserable winter through much of the United States, and most of us are ready to move on to spring. Unfortunately, such a premature bloom could be the worst thing to happen to your lawn and garden.

    “Early blooming forsythia bushes, magnolia trees, daffodils and tulips may look pretty, but when cold weather inevitably returns, they may be damaged,” says botanist Karen Snetselaar, Ph.D and chair of the Biology Department at Philadelphia’s St. Joseph’s University.

    Snetselaar also suggests embracing that white blanket many of us have been seeing on an all-too frequent basis. Instead of damaging plant life, she said,  snow serves to protect it from even more damaging conditions.

    “Snow cover is actually beneficial for many plants, especially perennial herbs and shrubs, because it provides insulation from freezing temperatures,” she said. “Plants under snow will be exposed to fewer drastic temperature changes, which is often more damaging than continued cold.”

    Snow offers other benefits, she added, including keeping moisture around plants and reducing the effects of cold, dry winds.

    Ross Penhallegon, a horticulturist with the Oregon State University Extension Service, suggests treating snow as a form of mulch.

    “If you shovel snow off driveways and walkways, take a little extra time to pile it around landscape plants under eaves that may have escaped coverage by snowfall,” he said.

    The weight of snow can damage trees. Photo: Green Right Now

    The weight of snow can damage trees. (Photo: Green Right Now)

    Trees, however, often require real and immediate assistance to deal with heavy snows. Branches overburdened with the weight can crack or break off entirely.

    Snetselaar suggests brushing the snow off as much as possible, pushing branches up rather than down to avoid breaking.

    Meanwhile, as you shiver through the rest of a cold, wet season, try not to worry so much. The snow that has blanked much of the nation this season could give way to a spectacular spring and summer – current appearances to the contrary.

  • Two Different Approaches Rockers Can Take To Musical Leaks

    Remember how the last Guns ‘N Roses album leaked to the internet — and somehow the FBI thought it was a good use of their resources to get involved and arrest the guy who uploaded the files — leading to him pleading guilty and getting two month’s house arrest? Would you believe there’s another approach?

    Jeff Barr points us to the news that Vince Neil, the “sometimes lead vocalist for Motley Crue,” has a new single out — which first leaked to the internet. But rather than freak out about it, Neil decided to offer it up directly himself for free, and to make it more valuable to get it directly, by offering the track, the video for it and a desktop wallpaper in the official version. And with that announcement, he also reminded folks that the full album will be out later this year, and he hopes they’re looking forward to it.

    Which response do you think endears more fans? Which response makes a stronger bond between the musician and the fans? Which response is likely to make more people feel good about paying for stuff from an artist? Now, Vince Neil isn’t as well known as Guns ‘N Roses — so it’s not a direct comparison. But, it does offer a decent way to look at how different musicians handle similar situations.

  • Starbucks coffee thrower gets two years in prison

    A homeless McHenry County man was sentenced Friday to two years in prison for throwing hot coffee into the face of a Starbucks barista who was trying to help calm him through an erratic episode.

    Jonathan A. Pease, 28, whose last known addresses were in Crystal Lake and Round Lake, received the two-year term as a result of his guilty plea earlier this month to aggravated battery and criminal damage to property charges stemming from the Nov. 14 incident.

    His attorney and county prosecutors agreed on the prison sentence Friday after an evaluation determined he was not eligible for intensive probation.

    “They would only accept him if he had a verified address and phone number, and he does not,” Assistant Public Defender Jason Majer said.

    Pease was arrested after an altercation that began the morning of Nov. 14 when he walked into a downtown Crystal Lake Starbucks in what police described as an agitated state and demanded coffee and a roll.

    After a barista gave him a cup of coffee, police said, Pease sat down in the business and continued to act strangely. When a second barista approached him to calm him down, police said, Pease threw his coffee at her, causing first- and second-degree burns to her face, neck an chest.

    Police said Pease then stood up and damaged a shop counter until two off-duty police officers in the business by chance detained him.

    Court records show that was not the first time Pease had been charged with throwing hot coffee on someone. In 2006, documents show, he was arrested and charged with aggravated battery after throwing hot coffee onto a worker at a behavioral health clinic in Woodstock. He later pleaded guilty to misdemeanor battery, was ordered to serve 18 months probation and required to undergo psychiatric treatment.

  • Prices rise for Cubs, but loyalty wins out

    Chicagoans felt as if the worst of another hard winter was finally over when last Friday dawned sunny and mild and single-game tickets to 2010 Cubs games went on sale.

    Pitchers and catchers had reported to Arizona for spring training earlier in the week, and a game-day-like sense of anticipation boosted the spirits of fans standing patiently in lines at Wrigley Field.

    Tom Ricketts, the Cubs’ new owner, contributed to the cheerful ambience, arriving at the park before 8 a.m. with coffee and donuts and chatting up the customers as they awaited an opportunity to buy seats that cost, on average, 10 percent more than last year.

    Ricketts’s amiable presence seemed to offset any grumbling over higher prices for a disappointing team — no one in line could recall anyone from the Tribune Company, the Cubs’ corporate, faceless former owner, showing up with refreshments for the masses.

    Neither could anyone recall the previous owner offering a pricey presale enticement that provided access to the most desirable games and — for ticket buyers willing to pay 20 percent more than face value and then “save” 5 percent by using a certain credit card — eliminated the need to stand in line.

    Friday’s buyers found most of the seats for the games with the White Sox, Cardinals and Brewers gone in the online presale, which ended Thursday and which provoked some grumbling and underscored a major challenge facing the Ricketts family: How do you maximize Wrigley Field revenues without alienating a restless fan base that would like some emotional return on its financial investment before it is tapped out?

    Based on last week’s sales and on recent history, the Cubs expect to draw three million fans for the seventh straight season. Their ticket prices remain third highest in baseball behind the Yankees and the Red Sox, who can justify the cost — between them they have won 7 of the last 14 World Series.

    The Cubs, as we know, have not won a World Series in 101 years or played in one in 65. Yet the team keeps asking its fans to invest in hope and dig deeper while they are stretched to cover the necessities of real life.

    Ricketts, a Cubs fan long before he was an owner, said that his own ticket-buying experience involved plying his brother with beer and pizza to get him to stand in line for bleacher seats. But as the sons of a billionaire, they never had to sweat the cost.

    He has said all the right things about respecting Cubs history and tradition and honoring the almost sacred trust. He hears from fans who wistfully recall when they were 8 years old, attending their first game with their grandfathers, mesmerized by the lush green setting and the majestic scoreboard and getting hooked on the Cubs forever.

    Ricketts understands that the ballpark experience is essential to cultivating loyalty. But beer and sunshine and socializing are no longer enough — not at these prices. For all their success at the gate, the Cubs are chronic underachievers on the field, and it’s no longer cute or funny. Not at these prices.

    Marc Whitney, 44, is a Chicago native, a lifelong Cubs fan who indulged his youthful passion by working as an Andy Frain usher at Wrigley Field and seeing 40-plus games a year.

    Now living in Milwaukee, he is trying to raise his son in the religion and has been making two or three Cubs trips a year. But, after paying $215.67 online for three right-field-corner, upper-deck box seats to a Friday afternoon game against the Phillies in July, the Whitney family will be making only one Wrigley trip this year.

    The face value of those tickets is $156; the additional cost comes from taxes and the “convenience fee” the Cubs charged in the pre-sale.

    Similar seats would also cost $156 at a Fenway Park ticket booth, and no wonder — the Red Sox are the Ricketts’s role model for their baseball business.

    There are similarities between the Cubs and the Red Sox, beginning with their cozy, neighborhood ballparks, each a shrine-like attraction unto itself as a symbol of history, of baseball as it was meant to be played.

    There are also significant differences, beginning with on-field performance. The Red Sox have been to the playoffs in seven of the last eight years and won the World Series in 2004 and 2007.

    The Cubs are poster guys for baseball futility, with a 1-6 record in postseason series since their last pennant in 1945 and with a nine-game playoff losing streak.

    And they have a thriving, less expensive rival just eight miles to the south that would be primed to steal market share if baseball loyalty weren’t so deeply ingrained in Chicago.

    “This has always mystified me: The White Sox play in a newer, nicer park with better amenities, more parking and frequently a better team,” said Marc Ganis, a sports marketing consultant.

    “Yet they draw, on average, 40 percent fewer fans. That’s the power of Wrigley Field.”

    That power comes at an increasingly steep price. Maybe too steep.

  • Apple Shareholder’s Meeting Roundup

    Yesterday Apple held its annual shareholder’s meeting at its Cupertino headquarters. All the top brass were there to answer questions from the men and women to whom, let’s face it, they must eventually answer. Of course, that didn’t stop Steve Jobs from being his usual tactless self, quipping during a lengthy comment from one shareholder, “Do you have a question?”

    There’s a lot of information to digest, so I’ve condensed the juiciest morsels into what I hope is a more accessible short-form. Here goes!

    All seven board members were re-elected; there was an advisory vote on executive compensation and Apple’s public accounting firm was chosen (it’s Ernst & Young, by the way.) Votes also were cast on two shareholder proposals. The first called for a published “sustainability report” detailing the company’s environmental policies and its contingency planning in the face of climate change. The second proposal was for the creation of a second board of directors, tasked with overseeing Apple’s environmental policies and business strategy in the face of climate change. The board felt they were already doing a fine job in both these areas, and recommended voting against the new proposals. Votes were counted and, unsurprisingly, neither proposal was successful.

    Green

    According to Macworld, Jobs claimed that Apple is the first company to work directly with suppliers on issues ranging from environmental impact to worker protection and education. Macworld’s Dan Frakes writes;

    Taking a jab at other companies, as well as organizations such as Greenpeace, [Jobs] noted that “other companies just make promises” and attend conferences and events to “schmooze with [environmental groups], but the work ain’t getting done,” whereas Apple is actually taking steps to improve the company’s real-world green credentials and treatment of workers.

    Jobs also noted that the smaller packaging used across Apple’s product line has reduced the number of annual cargo flights “by the hundreds”;

    “It’s the right thing to do from an environmental point of view; it’s the right thing to do from a business point of view.”

    Money

    In its first quarter 2010 investor conference call, Apple announced it had $39.8 billion in the bank at the end of December 2009. The question now is, what on earth should it do with it? Spend it? Save it for the next recession? Perhaps pay dividends to shareholders — something BusinessWeek says the company has not done since 1995? Jobs said;

    We know if we need to acquire something – a piece of the puzzle to make something big and bold – we can write a check for it and not borrow a lot of money and put our whole company at risk. The cash in the bank gives us tremendous security and flexibility.

    You never know what opportunities are going to be around the next corner. We are a large enough business now that, in order to really move the needle, we have to be thinking pretty bold – pretty large.

    New Role

    On the matter of Apple’s new role as a ‘mobile devices’ company (first announced by Jobs in January and reiterated by Tim Cook in last month’s earnings call) Jobs said;

    This is not something that we’re ordaining from the top. This is something our customers are saying with their dollars, if you just look at the products that we’re selling. They’re telling us what they think is important and we’re reflecting that.

    But specifically, what does this mean about the future of Apple’s desktop Macs, the iMac and Mac Pro? “We love desktop computers,” El Jobso assured the shareholders, “And plan to continue making them.” So, that’s alright then.

    Asia

    When asked about Apple’s efforts to increase international sales, Jobs turned to (VP of Retail) Ron Johnson, who announced that Apple is looking to open 24 more stores in China to join the existing store in Beijing. This is to be expected, given how important (and lucrative) China is to Apple. DigitalDaily’s John Paczkowski writes, “Mac sales in China increased nearly 100 percent year over year in the first financial quarter of 2010… while iPhone sales [are] ramping up.”

    Apple's Beijing Store

    Beyond the Mac, Paczkowski quotes Tim Cook on Apple’s overall revenue in that market;

    “…if you look at greater China last quarter, which is China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, our revenues tripled year-over-year… We have a tremendous focus on it.”

    I guess it’s only right China should get a little Apple-love… after all, they make most of Apple’s gear in the first place!

    Stability

    Finally, there was a moment of fun, Jobs-style; a shareholder wanted to know of Jobs, “What keeps you up at night?”

    “Shareholder meetings,” Jobs immediately shot back, before getting very serious and adding, thoughtfully;

    “Apple requires stability in the world. People aren’t going to worry about which laptop to buy if they can’t afford dinner, can’t afford to send their kids to school, can’t afford textbooks. There are things much bigger than us that are out of our control. So we try to just do the best we can.”

    Bravo, Steve. And bravo, Apple.
