  • Disney’s Takedown Of Roger Ebert’s Tribute To Gene Siskel

Esquire’s moving article about famed film critic Roger Ebert is worth reading for many reasons — detailing the unfortunate medical circumstances that have caused him to lose his voice, his jaw and his ability to eat, among other things, but not his ability to communicate or share his love of movies. Reading through the article, I had no intention of writing anything about it for Techdirt, but then I came to a story near the end, also noticed by Justin Levine, concerning how Disney apparently forced offline Ebert’s first show after longtime sparring partner Gene Siskel died:

Ebert keeps scrolling down [to his blog post commemorating Siskel, ten years after his death]. Below his journal he had embedded video of his first show alone, the balcony seat empty across the aisle. It was a tribute, in three parts. He wants to watch them now, because he wants to remember, but at the bottom of the page there are only three big black squares. In the middle of the squares, white type reads: “Content deleted. This video is no longer available because it has been deleted.” Ebert leans into the screen, trying to figure out what’s happened. He looks across at Chaz. The top half of his face turns red, and his eyes well up again, but this time, it’s not sadness surfacing. He’s shaking. It’s anger.

Chaz looks over his shoulder at the screen. “Those fu — ” she says, catching herself.

They think it’s Disney again — that they’ve taken down the videos. Terms-of-use violation.

This time, the anger lasts long enough for Ebert to write it down. He opens a new page in his text-to-speech program, a blank white sheet. He types in capital letters, stabbing at the keys with his delicate, trembling hands: MY TRIBUTE, appears behind the cursor in the top left corner. ON THE FIRST SHOW AFTER HIS DEATH. But Ebert doesn’t press the button that fires up the speakers. He presses a different button, a button that makes the words bigger. He presses the button again and again and again, the words growing bigger and bigger and bigger until they become too big to fit the screen, now they’re just letters, but he keeps hitting the button, bigger and bigger still, now just shapes and angles, just geometry filling the white screen with black like the three squares. Roger Ebert is shaking, his entire body is shaking, and he’s still hitting the button, bang, bang, bang, and he’s shouting now. He’s standing outside on the street corner and he’s arching his back and he’s shouting at the top of his lungs.

Notice that they think it’s Disney again. How nice of them to repeatedly take down the videos of Ebert’s tribute to his close friend. Just like copyright law intended.

  • 200-hp Honda CR-Z Type R in the works, to debut in late 2011

Unlike the Honda Insight, the Honda CR-Z is a sporty hybrid coupe shipping with a standard 6-speed manual transmission. Sales of the Honda CR-Z, which makes 122-hp from a 1.5L i-VTEC mated to Honda’s IMA hybrid system, will begin in the second half of 2010.

According to sources, the CR-Z is being readied for the Type R treatment with aggressive design cues and a more powerful hybrid powertrain under the hood.

Rumor has it that Honda’s tuning arm, Mugen, will use a reworked version of the Civic Type R’s 2.0L 4-cylinder engine mated to a petrol-electric powertrain making up to 150-hp and an additional 50-hp from a larger electric-motor. With a total of 200-hp, the Honda CR-Z Type R is expected run 0-60 mph in 6 seconds with a top speed of 140 mph.

Adding on to the standard CR-Z’s three-mode drive system that allows the driver to select between Sport, Econ and Normal driving modes, the CR-Z Type R will also get an additional Sport Plus setting. Better brakes and a stiffer suspension will complete the package.

Sources say that the CR-Z Type R will debut at next year’s Tokyo Motor Show with sales to start in late 2011. We doubt it’ll make it to the United States.

  • Amazing Health Essentials With The Low Carb Vegetarian Diet

Becoming vegetarian is more and more popular as people become aware of the health benefits and the environmental benefits that it can manifest. A vegetarian diet can help to significantly reduce the risk of diseases and conditions such as heart disease, diabetes type II, high blood pressure, heart attack and stroke, obesity and some kinds of cancer. Due to better understanding, there are also more vegetarian options available at restaurants and supermarkets.

There are a few different types of vegetarian diets. Vegans do not consume any type of meat or animal products at all and will often not wear animal products either. Lactovegetarians still eat dairy products; ovovegetarians will eat eggs, and flexitarians refrain from red meat, but sometimes eat chicken or fish.

When you are vegetarian you have to be careful that your diet is high enough in some nutrients that typically come from animal products. Developing a nutritional plan will increase your nutrient intake and prevent missing out on certain vitamins and minerals. Be careful to include foods that have protein, iron, B12, vitamin D, zinc and calcium.

An alternative to animal protein is legumes. This can be kidney beans, lentils, chickpeas and so on and these should be a part of a vegetarian diet several times a week. Whole grain foods are also able to provide a certain amount of protein in the diet. Vegetarian iron sources include spinach, dried fruit and Brewer’s Yeast, which can be added as a supplement in food. There are some cereals that are enriched with iron as well.

Getting enough zinc in your diet is essential for maintaining a strong immune system. Men also need zinc for healthy sperm production. You can get zinc by eating wheat germ and nuts. Vitamin B12 is mostly found in animal products, so it may be a good idea to take a vitamin B supplement to ensure that you are getting enough.

People need good amounts of calcium to have strong bones and teeth. If you do not have enough calcium and vitamin D, your bones may become brittle and you could develop osteoporosis. Calcium rich foods such as soy and tofu and spinach, broccoli and kale can ensure that you will have strong bones and healthy teeth.

Much of the vitamin D that we need comes from the sun, but dietary sources are mostly milk and fish products. If you are the kind of vegetarian who does not eat milk products or fish, then you will probably need to supplement your vitamin D levels with a tablet. You may also be able to find some foods that have vitamin D added.

It is entirely possible to replace the vitamins and nutrient we get from animal products with vegetarian sources. To do this effectively however, you will have to put some thought and planning into your low carb vegetarian diet. If you successfully plan your diet to include all essential nutrients, then you will most definitely enjoy the health benefits of a high protein vegetarian diet and lower your risk of developing lifestyle related illnesses and diseases from high intake of saturated animal fats.

Amazing Health Essentials With The Low Carb Vegetarian Diet is a post from the Vegetarian Vitamins Guide blog where you can find suggestions and advice from vegetarians and vegans on vegetarian diets, supplements, vitamins and overall nutrition.

  • The Road To Serfdom Is A Best Seller Again

    theroadahead.jpg

Bruce Caldwell, the editor of the University of Chicago’s new edition of “The Road To Serfdom” reports:

Friedrich Hayek, Nobel-prize winning economist and well-known proponent of free markets, is having a big month. He was last seen rap-debating with John Maynard Keynes in the viral video above, (in which Hayek is portrayed as the sober voice of reason while Keynes overindulges at a party at the Fed). His 1944 book, “The Road to Serfdom,” provided the theme for John Stossel’s Fox Business News program on Valentine’s Day.

Hayek, who died in 1992, is also reemerging as a bestselling author. A new edition of Hayek’s seminal book, “The Road to Serfdom,” was published in March 2007 by the University of Chicago Press as part of a series called “The Collected Works of F. A. Hayek,” for which I serve as editor. For over a year-and-a-half, the book sold respectably, at a clip of about 600 copies a month.

But then, in November 2008, sales more than quadrupled, and they haven’t slowed down since. What’s more, the Kindle edition went on sale in late May 2009 and is now the best-selling book that the University of Chicago Press has offered in that format. This would be a pretty good sales record for a contemporary author, but it is nothing short of amazing for a book originally published in 1944, and by an economist, no less.

What accounts for it? I would like to think that it’s due to the exceptional editing I did on the volume, but, alas, I think there is something larger going on.

First off, the November 2008 sales spike date certainly suggests that Obama’s election and the passing of control of both houses of Congress to the Democrats may have been an initial factor. The Republicans had been walloped, and some sought principled arguments that could be used to combat the policies of the party in power.

Even though Hayek himself disdained having his ideas attached to either party, he nonetheless provided arguments about the dangers of the unbridled growth of government.

Another early impetus may have been the characterization of the health care debate as being about socialized medicine. Hayek, whose book is perhaps the most famous attack on socialist central planning, would naturally be invoked by the health plan’s opponents.

But perhaps the biggest stimulus to sales was, well, the stimulus package.

  • Rumormill: Honda CR-Z Type-R in the works

2011 Honda CR-Z – Click above for high-res image gallery

The rumormongers at AutoExpress are at it again, donning their speculative fedoras and suggesting that a 200-horsepower Honda CR-Z Type-R is on the way. But if you were hoping for a K20 swap to ditch the hybrid setup, you’re in for a disappointment.

In stock form, the production CR-Z unveiled in Detroit makes due with a 102 hp 1.5-liter four-cylinder mated to an electric motor good for an additional 20 ponies. If AE is to be believed, Honda and its internal tuning partner, Mugen, plans to up the output of the stock four-pot to approximately 150 hp. Since the CR-Z was designed from the onset to be a hybrid, apparently Honda just can’t swap in the 2.0-liter engine from the Euro-Civic and call it a day. Instead, a beefed-up electric motor will be fitted – reportedly good for another 50 hp – and bringing total output up to 200 hp.

Naturally, the transformation won’t just be under the hood. A reworked suspension, upgraded brakes and a smattering of body mods will be included in the package, along with an additional driving mode (bringing the total to four), “Sport Plus” which will reportedly modify throttle response, steering, the start-stop system and the electric motor assist.

If the Type-R comes to fruition, expect it to debut at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show, with the production version arriving sometime in 2012.

  • Will People Pay For Content Online?

One fascinating thing to watch is how people in certain content professions continue to hold out hope that there’s some way that maybe, possibly, really people will suddenly see the light and magically start “paying for content online.” Now, obviously, many people do pay for content online, but it’s a very difficult market position to sustain due to basic economic forces, unless you’re doing something special, and have figured out a way to effectively bundle that content with some sort of real and valuable scarcity — i.e., a true reason to buy.

But, figuring out those business models aren’t easy, and for those who grew up in a world of artificial scarcity, there’s always this vague hope that, magically, people will start paying again. Believers in this fantasy were pretty happy to gloat and point us to a recent report from Nielsen, concerning some survey data on whether or not people would pay for content. The suggestion passed along was that this shows that we’re crazy for questioning whether or not people will actually pay for content online, as seen in the following chart, released by Nielsen plotting the data:

Of course, you can read this chart in a variety of different ways — and I found it interesting that the data is not actually to scale, since it cut off at the 60% mark. To put this into a bit more perspective, it’s a bit more helpful to show what the data actually say on a full 100% scale, so I did a quick & dirty version of that myself to help out:

Ah, amazing what a different scale will do, as the latter image makes the numbers (accurately) look a little less impressive than the image released by Nielsen.

But, even beyond that, these numbers don’t actually look all that good for the folks who claim that there’s some way to suddenly get people to start paying for this stuff, for a whole variety of reasons. First, this is survey data, which is notoriously bad at getting people to accurately predict if they would pay for something. You can lop off a big percentage of people who say they would pay, because when asked, lots of people who would never actually pay for something will say they will pay. I won’t even bother to estimate that amount, but I would argue it’s a significant chunk of those orange bars.

However, even if we grant the premise that these people potentially would pay, it still doesn’t support the “if we just did x, they’ll pay” camp (where x is anything from “shut down The Pirate Bay” to “kicked file sharers off the internet” to “passed three strikes legislation” to “increased enforcement” to “beefed up copyright laws” etc.). And the reason for that is when you look at how many people are actually paying. That is, it’s really those tiny blue percentages that matter here. And those are tiny across the board — and the reason isn’t copyright infringement or unauthorized file access, but the fact that the producers of the content haven’t figured out how to give most people a true reason to buy. They’re used to a world where you didn’t need to figure out a business model, but artificial scarcities and a small number of gatekeepers were able to make it so people had little choice.

But these days, with widespread abundance in content — which is growing every day — the era of artificial scarcities is rapidly ending, and anyone who wants to build a 21st century business model needs to start looking for real scarcities that offer real value, not artificial scarcities that seek to limit value while boosting price. So, yes, there’s some interesting data here, but it’s not the savior of those who think there’s a business model in selling content directly. It really says the exact opposite.

Tras lo ocurrido, lo más probable es que en los próximos días se de a conocer toda la información oficial sobre este vehículo. Estaremos atentos.

While we’ve seen several spy shots of 2011 Porsche Cayenne prototypes and mules, plus a few renderings that purport to show the real deal, Porsche apparently let the cat out of the bag by mistake… again. On the Porsche website, an image that shows the 2011 Cayenne right in the middle of a family picture magically appeared and was apparently swapped out later to include the current generation Cayenne GTS.

The Cayenne 2.0 in the photo looks athletic and trimmer, with huge wheels and big headlights that give it a startled appearance, maybe because it was caught with its pants down. Whether the image above is ‘chopped or Porsche recognized the error of its ways and took the family pic down, we don’t know. What we do know is that the ’11 Porsche SUV will make its debut in Geneva next month. Until then, take a larger look at the image above and let us know what you think.

  • Discovery Hut

    Antarctica, Globe | Incredible Ruins

The time between 1897 and 1922 is known as the Heroic Age of Polar Exploration, a time when both northern and southern polar regions of the globe were for the first time visited by humans.

The United Kingdom, the super power of the age, envisioned itself as the natural leader in this endeavor. The Discovery Hut stands as a monument to one of their less successful endeavors.

This humble wooden building was erected in 1902 at Hut Point on Ross Island by McMurdo Sound in Antarctica. With intent to be use as a base for so called Discovery Expedition lead by Sir Robert Falcon Scot, Britain had employed its best scientific minds with the task of designing a habitat and storage facility suitable for antarctic climatic conditions.

Unfortunately, the best minds of Britain had never set foot in Canada or Scandinavia, much less the antarctic. As an antarctic habitat the Discovery Hut proved to be an utter failure.

The hut was prefabricated in Australia at a cost of £360 of that time, and transported by ship in pieces and assembled on the spot. A square structure it had useless verandas on the three sides, which served only as snow traps. The insulation provided by a relatively thin layer of felt stuck between two layers of wooden planks, turned out to be extremely insufficient. The hut was unbearably cold and windy, so much so that the crew refused to use it and continued sleeping on the ship.

The pyramidal roof was not slanted enough to permit the sliding off of accumulated snow, but at least it made the profile of the building low enough to avoid the most brutal whips of wind. However, this fact was too rendered useless because the hut was oriented with the entrance on the windward southern side. The hut was visited again by Shackleton’s expedition in in February 1908. He found the main door ripped off the hinges by a gust of wind and entrance blocked completely by accumulated snow. Shackleton’s men had to enter the building via the window on the leeward side.

Most of these errors could have been avoided if traditional hut building methods of inhabitants of sub-polar regions, or indeed some common sense, had been employed.

The lessons learned from errors of Discovery Hut were used in the design of the base for Terra Nova expedition, Scott’s next attempt to reach south pole. However, this was not enough to save the lives of himself and his crew in this next ill-fated effort, as arrogance and ignorance, again played the part in choice of personal equipment and planning for the mission.

A part of the provisions left by expeditions of early 1900s are still present in the hut. Some items are in comparatively good condition thanks to constant subzero temperatures. Century old seal blubber still hangs inside the hut, though ome bacterial decay did occur as reportedly the seal meat left there smells, by now, quite rancid.

  • Everyone In Europe Has Been Cheating On Each Other

When the European Monetary Union was formed, the countries hoped to avoid a Greece situation by putting hard caps on public debt.

Greece got around this by engaging in swaps with Goldman Sachs that helped disguise its true debt levels.

Earlier we noted how Italy may have been obfuscating its debt as well.

But the real story, it seems is that EVERYONE is doing this. The below document (via alea) explains how France got busted for this as well back in 2007.

And the lesson is that banks aren’t the only players that engage in regulatory arbitrage. Any institution — public, private, for-profit or otherwise — will seek to cut corners and come up with ways to disguise an aggressive or risky financial system.
