  • Trolltunga

Hordaland Fylke, Norway | Geological Oddities

Trolltunga is another spectacular example of the geological oddities that dot the Norwegian landscape.

The fittingly named ‘Troll’s Tongue’ sticks out of a vertical mountain side above a 350m drop. It offers a magnificent view of Skjeggedal near town of Odda.

The location is far less know than some other spectacular geological oddities in Norway, and therefore, much less crowded, however still quite accessible. You can take a funicular up part of the way, though it isn’t always functioning. It is roughly a 3-4 hour hike to the ‘trolls tongue’.

  • DeHart’s Bible and Tire

    Kentucky, US | Commercial Curiosities

A frequent item on roadside attraction lists for many years, is DeHart’s Bible & Tire.

In the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it town of Hay’s Crossing just outside of Morehead, Kentucky, DeHart’s Bible & Tire occupies a commercial niche most people would never even think of – as its name implies, the store sells bibles and tires, and that’s all.

The humble concrete structure has caught the eye of many travelers through Kentucky’s eastern back roads on US Route 60 at the intersection with KY-174 (Haldeman Road). Rumors swirl about the store closing up or even being demolished, but as of 2009, the business is still operating, and as always, still selling bibles and tires.

  • Distressed Investor David Tepper Now Buying Up Airline Stock (AMR, DAL, LCC, UAL)

    david tepper

After making a killing in distressed debt last year (up 120% through 2009 Q3), looks like David Tepper scooped up some airline stock.

In Q4, Tepper’s Appaloosa Fund opened new positions in American parent AMR, Delta Air Lines, US Airways, and United parent UAL.

His total bet on airlines was around $133 million at year end.

According to their most recently 13F filing with the SEC, Appaloosa also took up stakes in Willis Group, an insurance firm, and Wells Fargo.

Appaloosa also added to stakes in Citigroup, which is now his second largest holding. Bank of America is Appaloosa’s largest holding.

Of course we don’t know if these are long or short positions, but they are noteworthy.

The number of passengers on US airlines increased in November 2009 1.6% from a year ago.

  • Marines say Taliban resistance more disorganized

MARJAH, Afghanistan — U.S. and Afghan forces traded gunfire with insurgents shooting from haystacks in poppy fields Tuesday as NATO forces progressed against increasingly fitful resistance in the Taliban stronghold of Marjah.

Insurgents tried but failed to bring down an Osprey aircraft with rocket-propelled grenades as Cobra attack helicopters fired missiles at enemy positions, including a machine gun bunker.

Marines and Afghan troops who pushed through four days of sniper fire and homemade bombs finally linked up with units that had been airdropped into town in the first hours of the offensive.

When troops first landed by helicopter in the early hours of Saturday, there had been no fighting, but that soon changed, said Lt. Gordon Emmanuel, commander of 2nd Platoon, Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines.

Entrenched in a compound deep in town, they have fought heated battles for days, waiting for the ground assault troops to arrive with reinforcements.

“When it is daytime, there is nonstop contact until the sun goes down … every day,” Emmanuel said.

Overall, Marine officials said the resistance seemed to be growing disorganized.

“We’re not seeing coordinated attacks like we did originally. We’re still getting small-arms fire but it’s sporadic, and hit-and-run tactics,” said spokesman Capt. Abraham Sipe. “As a whole, while there is still resistance, it is of a disorganized nature.”

A Taliban spokesman, however, claimed that insurgents retain control of the town and coalition forces “descended from helicopters in limited areas of Marjah and now are under siege.”

Spokesman Tariq Ghazniwal extended an invitation by e-mail to journalists to visit Marjah, saying the trip would “show who have the upper hand in the area.”

But U.S. forces say they have managed to consolidate footholds in the town despite harassment by sniper squads trying to slow their advance. For the first time since the offensive started, U.S. forces fired long-range artillery “smoke shells,” which are non-lethal, to intimidate insurgents.

“We are trying not to be decisively engaged, so we can progress, but we’re having some difficulty right now,” said Lima Company commander Capt. Joshua Winfrey.

Squads continued with their house-to-house searches, removing bombs and booby-traps as they moved through town. Inside some compounds Tuesday, squads found small doses of heroin, a Taliban photo album with fighters posing with AK-47s, and large propaganda wall paintings of insurgents shooting down helicopters.

Three more Afghan civilians were killed in the assault, NATO forces said, highlighting the toll on the population from an offensive aimed at making civilians safer.

The deaths — in three separate incidents — come after two errant U.S. missiles struck a house on the outskirts of Marjah on Sunday, killing 12 people, half of them children. Afghan officials said three Taliban fighters were in the house at the time of the attack.

About 15,000 NATO and Afghan troops are taking part in the massive offensive around Marjah — the linchpin of the Taliban logistical and opium poppy smuggling network.

Miltary spokesman Lt. Mohammad Esah said Tuesday one Afghan soldier has died in the offensive. An American and a Briton participating in the offensive were killed Saturday.

As the NATO offensive aims to break the Taliban influence in southern Afghanistan, the militant group received another blow with the news of its top military commander’s arrest in Pakistan.

Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, the group’s No. 2 leader behind Afghan Taliban founder Mullah Mohammad Omar and a close associate of Osama bin Laden, was captured in the port city of Karachi, U.S. and Pakistani officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the information.

The arrest appeared to have occurred as many as 10 days ago, and it was unclear if it had any effect on the Marjah battle.

The offensive is the biggest joint operation since the 2001 U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan and is a major test of a retooled NATO strategy to focus on protecting civilians, rather than killing insurgents.

But in two incidents confirmed Tuesday, Afghan men came toward NATO forces and ignored shouts and hand signals to stop, NATO said.

Troops opened fire and killed them. In a third incident, two Afghan men were caught in the crossfire between insurgents and NATO forces. Both were wounded and one died despite being given medical care, NATO said.

NATO has confirmed 15 civilian deaths, but an Afghan human rights group said Tuesday they have counted since the operation began. Four were caught in the crossfire when they left their homes.

“Their neighbors tell us that the bodies are outside and they want someone to pick them up. They say they’re scared if they go outside they will also be shot dead,” said Ajmal Samadi, the director of Afghanistan Rights Monitor.

It was unclear whether NATO or insurgent forces were to blame for the deaths, he said.

In an incident unrelated to the Marjah offensive, a NATO airstrike in neighboring Kandahar province killed five civilians and wounded two. NATO said they were mistakenly believed to have been planting roadside bombs.

Elsewhere in Helmand province, NATO and Afghan forces killed more than 10 militants while pursuing a Taliban commander in Washir district, west of the Marjah area.

In Marjah, Marine and Afghan squads skirted the booby-trapped streets of the town, pushing through more rural sections where fields of chest-high poppies grew amid irrigation canals.

But there they found insurgent snipers firing from haystacks built over small canals. It appeared that lone snipers were seeking to draw the Marine squads into areas where they could be targeted by larger Taliban units firing from rooftops.

Squads with Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines fanned out in columns alongside an armored-vehicle convoy as they moved carefully through poppy fields. A mine-roller leading the way detonated planted bombs as it advanced.

Residents said they were scared to be seen with NATO forces. One man, Wali Mohammad, warned an AP reporter, “Don’t take pictures or the Taliban will come back to kill me,” as Marines searched his compound.

Mohammad said he strongly suspected insurgents would return to the area as soon as the Marines moved on. He said Taliban fighters had targeted U.S. and Afghan troops, firing from his neighbors’ houses.

“When they come, we try to tell them not to use our house, but they have guns so they do what they want,” the poppy farmer said.

    Transfer Help

As a high school senior, Asma Hashim turned down a long list of universities, choosing instead to start her higher education at Harper College. She’s since transferred to Loyola to finish up her bachelor’s degree – the next step toward a medical school goal. Harper this month is helping more students get where Hashim is. The College’s annual Transfer Fair will boast representatives from more than 80 four-year universities and colleges across the nation, all of them hoping to attract students who plan to continue their education after getting started at Harper. The Tuesday, February 23 event – positioned in the midst of the downturned economy – is attracting many institutions that never attended before. “Many more private colleges, in particular, are looking to recruit our quality students,” Transfer Information Specialist Agnes Szemborski says. “With this fair, we hope to provide Harper students with a number of options – including some they might not otherwise have considered – that will help them achieve their next educational goal.” Among the Fair’s newcomers: California’s Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising and Chicago’s American Academy of Art. The Transfer Fair runs from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Building A Student Center; an additional version, geared specifically to adult students ages 25 and older, runs from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Avanté Center concourse. Across the nation, two-year colleges have seen enrollment gains as students opt to begin their educations there before transferring to costlier four-year institutions, and a 2005 National Center for Education Statistics study showed U.S. students increasingly are attending more than one college before completing their undergraduate degrees. At Harper, nearly 55 percent of new students surveyed in 2007 intended to transfer. Northern Illinois University, DePaul, Illinois State and the University of Illinois at Chicago are among the most popular destinations – but many students, often encouraged by the Fair’s options, also head to other institutions. Harper Student Senate President Carl Evans, a future attorney, has been accepted at Northwestern University, but also is considering Harvard and the University of Chicago for finishing up his political science and history studies. “Harper gave me the academic foundation I needed,” says Evans, the first in his family to attend college. “None of these goals would have been attainable without my experience at Harper College.”

Media Note: Reporters are welcome to attend the Transfer Fair and talk with Colleges recruiting students in a bad economy or interview students who plan to attend a four-year College after starting at Harper. President’s Ball

A dinner-and-dancing gala aimed at raising tens of thousands of dollars for Harper College student scholarships, programs, and educational experiences will be held on Saturday, March 6 in Schaumburg. The President’s Ball, hosted by Harper’s Educational Foundation, will feature live music and remarks from both a Harper scholarship recipient and College President Ken Ender, who will discuss how student success can bolster an entire community. Tickets are $250; tickets for a live raffle, which boasts a $2,500 grand prize, are $25. Sponsorship opportunities also are available. Bob Fiorani, an Educational Foundation board member and a retired vice president at Square D/Schneider Electric, also will address the crowd. Since its inception in 1973, Harper’s Educational Foundation has supported the College and its students with dozens of scholarships, programming and other financial contributions. “Today, our Foundation is working even more diligently in the face of decreased state funding and increased demand for higher education opportunities,” says Catherine Brod, Harper College Educational Foundation Executive Director. “Our success has come from building strong relationships with others in our community. Our President’s Ball is another excellent opportunity to make new connections and bring our community together for the purpose of championing the College and our students.” Harper’s most recent Foundation gala, held two years ago, raised $500,000 for College students. The ball will start with a cocktail reception at 6 p.m. at the Renaissance Schaumburg Hotel and Convention Center, 1551 Thoreau Drive North. Dinner and dancing will follow. Event Co-Chairs are Fiorani and his wife, Roberta, of Barrington; Mike and Sue Gilfillan of Arlington Heights; and Jack and Linda Lloyd of Palatine. New Economy Job Help

In the last year, Harper College has helped hundreds of Northwest suburban residents hunt for jobs in a downturned economy, serving up monthly support, networking and advice with a “Career Stimulus” group that helped members revamp their resumes and work toward new careers. Now the program – egged on by the gradually optimistic economy – is changing gears. “As companies begin to hire again and more people begin to get jobs, local residents will be facing new concerns, like how to ace an interview or negotiate a salary,” Adult Learning Special Assistant Nancy Wajler says. “With a new year and a hopefully newly stimulated economy, we’re looking to fill those new needs with even more sophisticated support.” The next edition of the program, at 9:30 a.m. Friday, February 26 in the Wojcik Conference Center, will feature Jonathan Salem Baskin, a global brand strategist who will offer tips and tricks for branding yourself and standing out from the crowd as you ramp up your job hunt in a recovering economy. “This is such an important part of a successful career search,” Wajler says. “As always, our goal is to assess the economic situation and offer appropriate advice and support that help people advance and secure good jobs.” Harper has added another career coach, and Career Stimulus meetings will feature new breakout topics, including launching your own business, money matters like salary negotiations and asset management, “tool kit” topics like how to work your network and write winning cover letters, and personal strategies focused on making sure job-hunters have a plan to ensure a successful job transition. The new format also will feature monthly members-only evening workshops on subjects like navigating – and benefitting from – the popular LinkedIn social network. Harper’s Career Stimulus, launched in March 2009 to provide workers with post-layoff help, has drawn 300 regular members. The program is free for first-timers. Subsequent sessions are $10. Memberships also are available for $85 ($50 for renewals); they include a year of meetings, one-on-one sessions with a Harper career coach, workshops, and materials for and admission to an intensive “NetWorthing” session focused on making networking work. For more details, visit www.harpercollege.edu or call 847.925.6438.

Media Note: Previous Career Stimulus participants who found jobs through Harper’s program are available for interviews. Harper’s Adult Learning Special Assistant, Nancy Wajler, also is available for comment on the success of job clubs and how they may need to change as the economy slowly climbs out of its downward spiral. Exploring Health Careers

High school students and community members interested in pursuing healthcare professions can get an up-close look at their options this month at two hands-on Harper College Health Careers Open Houses. The events, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, February 18 and from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, February 20, will showcase the College’s state-of-the art facilities – including the dental hygiene and nursing laboratories – and feature current students, who will offer explanations of their programs and demonstrate skills they’ve learned at Harper. Phlebotomy students will draw blood; sonography students will perform a sonogram on volunteers and radiology technology students will illustrate the proper procedures for performing X-rays. The open houses also will include presentations of actual trauma situations that local EMTs and other healthcare professionals have responded to, offer information on program requirements and curriculums and allow potential students to talk with coordinators of specific Health Career programs and meet with admissions representatives. “Hands-on, visual demonstrations are the best way to show potential students the dynamic opportunities the healthcare field offers,” Associate Health Careers Dean Barbara Small says. “Participants will be able to essentially step into a student’s shoes, get their questions answered and see first-hand the opportunities that Harper Health Careers students have.” The open houses are geared to both local high school students and community members, with an eye on offering new options for adults pursuing new careers. Harper’s 10 Health Careers programs can lead to careers in numerous fields, including radiologic and cardiac technology, nursing, medical office administration, emergency medical services and dental hygiene. Open house participants can focus on the fields that interest them most. The open houses will start in Room X250, Building X in the Avanté Center, 1200 W. Algonquin Road in Palatine. To RSVP, visit www.harpercollege.edu. For general questions about the open houses, contact Small at 847.925.6682.

    Balloon Art

Harper College’s next art exhibition requires a lot of hot air and significant lung capacity. Beginning Friday, February 19, a rotation of Harper art faculty and students will join guest artist Jason Hackenwerth in manually blowing up as many as 7,000 balloons – preparation for a large-scale balloon sculpture that Hackenwerth, known for his sophisticated and enchanting aerial art, will create in Harper’s exhibition space. “An air pump would be helpful,” Assistant Professor Jason Peot acknowledges, but human air is one of the secret ingredients that helps make Hackenwerth’s alluringly ephemeral sculptures work. The artist’s finished product, created by twisting, blowing and shaping the inflated balloons into an intricate configuration, will be on display from Tuesday, February 23 through Thursday, March 18 in Harper’s Art Exhibition Space, Room C200, Building C on the main campus, 1200 W. Algonquin Road in Palatine. Viewing times for the free “Tide of Poseidon” exhibit are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays. A slide lecture will be held at 11:15 a.m. on Tuesday, February 23 (the exhibit’s opening day) in the Harper Painting Studio, Room C201 in Building C. A reception and discussion with Hackenwerth runs from 12:15 to 1 p.m. the same day in the exhibition space. “Jason Hackenwerth is an intriguing artist whose work I’ve admired many times,” Peot says. “To be able to work alongside him, helping him create the framework for his latest project, is an awesome experience for our faculty and especially for our students.”  Hackenwerth, a New York City resident who holds a master’s degree in fine arts and has exhibited throughout the U.S., Europe and Asia, draws from plant and animal forms to create his all-balloon sculptures. The pieces come to life with the help of human air and then slowly expire, all within the time and space of the exhibition.

Media Note: The artist, with help from students and faculty, will blow up between 5,000 and 7,000 balloons for his Harper sculpture, starting on Friday, February 19. Reporters and photographers are invited to observe that process and talk with the artist. Contact Erin Brooks, Media Relations Specialist, at 847.925.6159 or [email protected] for the best photo times and dates.

    Bilingual Financial Aid

Harper College is offering sessions aimed at helping potential students navigate the murky waters of financial aid – whether they speak English or Spanish. The dual-language Financial Aid Workshops, geared toward high school juniors and their parents, will feature information on financial aid eligibility, the FAFSA application process, deadlines, the varying forms of federal and state aid and Harper scholarships for new freshmen. Those who aren’t eligible for financial aid will get tips for researching other scholarship options online. Participants also can receive onsite help filling out the FAFSA. Two bilingual workshops, offered in both English and Spanish, will be held at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, February 21 at Rolling Meadows High School, 2901 W. Central Road in Rolling Meadows, and at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 11 at Palatine High School, 1111 N. Rohlwing Road in Palatine. “Financial aid can be intimidating even for the savviest person. Offering the pertinent information in Spanish can be helpful to parents, in particular, when it comes to understanding the details,” says Juanita Pérez Bassler, a Harper College Recruiting Specialist. “We offer these workshops to let high school students know that college really is an option, and to let them know we’re here to help.” The workshops are free, but seating is limited. For details or to RSVP, visit www.harpercollege.edu or contact Pérez Bassler at 847.925.6940 or [email protected]. To complete the FAFSA at the event, students must bring a driver’s license, social security card and 2009 tax information (tax returns should be completed first).

Media Note: Harper’s Director of Student Financial Assistance, Earl Dowling, is available for interviews on financial aid topics. His answers to frequent questions, including details on the new FAFSA form changes, are available in video form on Harper’s web site, www.harpercollege.edu, under the Financial Aid tab. For interviews or for more Harper financial aid information, contact Erin Brooks, Media Relations Specialist, 847.925.6159, [email protected].

  • Attorney hired to represent accused Fox River Grove killer

WOODSTOCK — A private attorney announced he is representing the 26-year-old Fox River Grove man accused of fatally bludgeoning his step-mother last week.

Crystal Lake attorney Henry Sugden informed Judge Sharon Prather this morning that he has been hired to represent Martin Green, whose bail was set at $3 million Saturday.

The public defender assigned Saturday was removed from the case, and a bond hearing was set for Tuesday morning.

Green’s arraignment was scheduled for March 17.

Patti McNamara, 52, was found dead Thursday morning in her home on Gladys Avenue. She and her husband shared a house with Green, who fled the scene and jumped into the Fox River. Green received medical treatment for exposure and was charged with two counts of murder Thursday.

An autopsy revealed McNamara’s injuries were consistent with the hammer police recovered at the scene, officials said.

The family issued a statement Sunday indicating Green had been struggling with mental illness for the past few years despite receiving treatment. Sugden said he had not yet received enough information on the case to elaborate on the mental illness or the allegations against his client.

The family statement described McNamara as a beautiful friend and mother and asked for privacy as family and friends honored her life and memory. McNamara’s funeral was scheduled for this morning.

She is survived by three children, five stepchildren and three grandchildren.

  • Fairtrade Fortnight: Should I feel guilty about food miles?

We’re faced with a barrage of ethical dilemmas every time we browse the supermarket shelves. Is it better to support the livelihoods of poor farmers in developing countries or is it better to ‘buy local’ and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with international shipping and airfreight? I wasn’t sure, so I decided to do some investigating.

The International Institute for Environment and Development, a non-profit research organisation, has released a report that sheds light on the food miles debate. The report highlights the social and economic benefits to some of the poorest farmers in the world when we buy food produced in Sub-Saharan Africa.

It states that ‘over 1 million livelihoods in Africa are supported by UK consumption of imported fresh fruit and vegetables’ and that ‘In the UK, 87% of the Green Beans that we consume are from 5 African countries’.

These figures are staggering. The report makes it clear that in not buying air-freighted produce from Africa, ‘we can only reduce UK total emissions by less than 0.1%’. Given that so many livelihoods are dependent on the UK market, perhaps it would be better to focus our carbon saving efforts elsewhere?

I looked to the Fairtrade Foundation for more guidance. In Why the Climate Revolution Must be a Fair Revolution, it says that it’s more important to consider a product’s total life cycle emissions. Basically it’s telling us that in every step of the production process emissions are generated and we’re getting hung up on one element – transport. For example, Cafedirect found that 65% of the carbon emissions from a cup of Teadirect comes from boiling the kettle in the UK.

So this Fairtrade Fortnight, I’m leaving the food miles debate behind and supporting the brands that carry the Fairtrade mark. I know that I need to reduce my own personal emissions but I don’t think that the supermarket is the place to start.

This Fairtrade Fortnight Oxfam and Cafédirect have teamed up to the The Big Swap. You can swap a bag of clothing donations for a box of Cafédirect’s Everyday Tea in Oxfam shops that stock food – So to start my spring cleaning early I’ll be having a sort through my wardrobe this Fairtrade Fortnight.

  • Oral Health America and Trident gum celebrate Children’s Dental Health Month

Oral Health America, Trident® gum, and Maryland leaders are celebrating Children’s Dental Health Month (February) and the expansion of the Deamonte Driver Dental Project, a school-based community oral health initiative in Prince George’s County, MD.

Oral Health America is honoring the Robert T. Freeman Dental Society Foundation’s Deamonte Driver Dental Project with a $20,000 grant award.

The grant is made possible through a $1.5 million, three-year commitment from Trident® gum to Oral Health America’s Smiles Across America® program.

“Dental care is an essential part of appropriate medical care,” said Sen. Benjamin L. Cardin (D-MD) in a statement about the award.

“In 2007, 12-year-old Deamonte Driver from Prince George’s County died from a brain infection caused by a tooth abscess.

Treating a cavity takes very little time or effort, but the death of a child from tooth decay is a national tragedy we must make sure never happens again.”

“The painful lesson learned from the needless and tragic death of Deamonte Driver is that without access to quality dental care, every child in America is at risk,” Congressman Elijah Cummings (D-MD) added.

“Because of the support from Oral Health America, the Deamonte Driver Dental Project will ensure that children in our community who are most vulnerable to dental disease will receive the care they so desperately need.”

Founded by Robert T. Freeman Dental Society members Drs. Hazel Harper and Belinda Carver-Taylor with the encouragement of state Senator Ulysses Currie and Dental Director, Dr. Harry Goodman, the Deamonte Driver Dental Project was launched in 2008 to ensure that no child in Prince George’s County would lack access to needed dental services.

“On behalf of the Robert T. Freeman Dental Society Foundation, I am thrilled with the award for the Deamonte Driver Dental Project,” said Dr. Harper.

“Deamonte left a legacy for the children of Prince George’s County, and for the entire country, that we will not walk away from.  Thank you to all of our supporters who are working in collaboration with us to ensure that all children get the dental care they need.”

The Smiles Across America grant will provide funding to support the expansion of school-based dental care in Prince George’s County.

“Oral Health America applauds Maryland’s efforts and the work of the Deamonte Driver Dental Project,” said Beth Truett, President and CEO, Oral Health America.

“We celebrate Children’s Dental Health Month with this gift, recognizing the National Dental Association, Robert T. Freeman Dental Society Foundation, Senator Cardin, Congressman Cummings, and community leaders who are bringing needed oral health services to life.”

Oral Health America is a national non-profit organization, founded in 1955 and located in Chicago, dedicated to changing lives by connecting communities with resources to increase access to oral health care, education, and advocacy.

The Robert T. Freeman Dental Society (RTFDS) Foundation is the community service component of the Robert T. Freeman Dental Society, a chapter of the National Dental Association, which was founded in 1900.  Membership is comprised of dentists in Washington, DC and neighboring Southern Maryland.

Trident® Sugar-Free gum has long been a pioneer in providing oral health benefits to consumers.

Trident was the first gum brand of its kind to undergo extensive long-term clinical testing in 1967 with studies showing that people who chewed Trident experienced significantly fewer cavities.

Most recently, the brand introduced Trident Xtra Care™ with Recaldent®, a great tasting sugar free gum that delivers superior strengthening power versus regular sugar-free chewing gum.

Today, Trident is the best selling chewing gum and sugar-free gum in the world, and a recent study shows that the brand continues to be recommended by four out of five dentists who would recommend sugar-free gum to their patients who chew gum.

  • STRATFOR: China’s Treasury Dumping Is The Equivalent Of A Nuclear Weapons Test

    obama china hu jintao

In a latest comment, global intelligence firm STRATFOR wonders whether today's surprising disclosure that China slashed its holdings of U.S. government debt in December might be a signal from Beijing that Washington should be careful not to get too tough with the emerging super power.

STRATFOR: However, China, previously the leading holder of U.S. debt, shaved its holdings of short-term securities (T-bills) by $34.2 billion for a 4.3 percent drop in total holdings, putting it behind Japan as the largest holder of U.S. debt for the first time since September 2009.

    ...

China has for more than a year been the leading buyer of U.S. Treasury debt — especially short-term debt, helping to keep interest rates low in a key export market. However, the Chinese have also threatened to slow purchases or reduce holdings as a warning to the United States. Sino-American relations have been souring in recent months, with trade and economic tensions rising and the United States pushing for sanctions on Iran that could threaten China’s energy security. China was also displeased in December 2009 over the approach of a new U.S. arms deal with Taiwan, which has since been approved and sparked a controversy.

While China may reduce its holdings of U.S. debt in order to send a signal to Washington (though this is not necessarily the only reason it would do so), it has no intention of selling debt to the point that it wrecks the U.S. economic recovery, since doing so would destroy China’s own economic and socio-political stability.

Thus while it's clearly not in China's interest to exercise what we might call a 'nuclear' treasury-selling option, in our view even a short term jolt could be perceived as a deterrent to keep the U.S. in check.

  • As friends mourn, investigators search for Cicero fire cause

CICERO, Ill. — Authorities are continuing to seek answers to questions of how a weekend fire started, then killed seven people at a suburban Chicago home.

Fire fighters haven’t publicly speculated about a possible cause. Those who died including a 3-day-old baby and a 3-year-old boy.

Cicero Assistant Fire Marshal Ron Opalecky has said investigators believed the blaze originated in the back of the home. But he adds nothing has been ruled out.

A grandfather, Elijah Grays, had planned to spend his weekend with his family celebrating his birthday and the arrival of a new grandson.

Instead, he was left mourning the loss of three children, two grandchildren and two friends.

Family friend Kym Hackett says Grays was devastated by his loss.

WBBM’s Steve Miller spoke with a South Side pastor who knew three of the victims well: 20-year-old Byron Reed, his girlfriend 18-year-old Sallie Gist and their three-year-old son Rayshawn Reed.

Byron Reed was expected at church that Sunday.  The day he died.

Pastor Glenn Moyer of Apostolic Little Rock Church says he knew Byron Reed all his life.  Watched as he took on the responsibilities of fatherhood.

“I remember when he used to come on the bus from Cicero.  When he’d come to church, he’d bring his son with him. They’d be all bundled up.

“Byron took more time, I thought, to make sure that his son was all right, than anybody else.”

Pastor Moyer says that doesn’t mean that the boy’s mother Sallie Gist didn’t take care of Rayshawn.

“Because Sallie did.  But Byron was always there…  They really adored each other, his son and him.”

Pastor Moyer says he will always remember Byron Reed’s smile: a grin “that made you happy just because he was smiling.”

“He was always volunteering to do different things for different people at the church.”

Pastor Moyer says Byron Reed was trying to get his GED, trying to get his life together so he could do something with it.

Pastor Moyer says he’s not asking where God was in this tragedy.  He says it’s God who will help the families get through this tragedy.

  • Own JFK’s love letters

CHICAGO — A Chicago-area auction house selling 11 love letters that then-Senator John F. Kennedy wrote to one of his lovers. WBBM’s Regine Schlesinger reports the bidding started yesterday at $25,000 and could go as high as $100,000 by the time the auction ends on March 3rd.

It’s the same auction house that sold a lock of Elvis’ hair for 100-thousand. Now, Doug Allen, president of Legendary Auctions in suburban Lansing, says they have a set of 11 letters that the future president wrote to Gunilla von Post, a Swedish woman with whom he carried on a 2-year affair that began on the French Riveria in 1953, just a month before his marriage to Jacqueline Kennedy.

The correspondence and the affair ended in 1955 when then-Senator Kennedy already was thinking about running for president 4 years later. Some of the letters are written on US Senate stationery.

  • Review: 2010 Kia Forte Koup SX a beauty queen that can’t hide its roots

2010 Kia Forte Koup – Click above for high-res image gallery

It’s time to stop being surprised that Koreans can make good cars. Kia and its sister-brand Hyundai have been doing it for years now, with each successive model being better than the last. Hyundai has been selling vehicles in the U.S. for 24 years, Kia for 16, and they don’t deserve bonus points anymore for exceeding expectations. Want proof? Along with Subaru, they were the only three brands to increase sales last year during the Great Recession. The bar has been raised and it’s time we take off the kid gloves.

With that in mind, we turn our attention to the 2010 Kia Forte Koup. A brand new model, the Koup joins the Forte sedan in displacing the Spectra, Kia’s former best-selling model in the U.S. So the stakes are high for this four-door and accompanying Koup (blech, we mean coupe). We’ve already sampled the Forte sedan and called it “a stylish, comfortable, frisky automotive companion for surprisingly short dollars.” Along with losing two doors, the Koup also gains more aggressive bodywork that suggests the potential for higher performance than the sedan. Does it fulfill that promise or come across as a parts-bin twin with two fewer doors? Let’s follow the jump to find out.

  • Roger Ebert cannot speak, but still communicates

NEW YORK — Film critic Roger Ebert lost his ability to speak nearly four years ago, when he underwent a tracheostomy, a procedure that opens an airway through an incision in the windpipe, after surgery for cancer in his jaw.

In an interview in the new issue of Esquire magazine, the 67-year-old film critic for the Chicago Sun-Times uses pen and paper and text-to-speech computer software to communicate.

He’s developed a kind of rudimentary sign language, and he sometimes draws letters with his finger on the palm of his hand.

Ebert had surgery to remove his cancerous thyroid in 2002. He had surgery on his salivary glands in 2003 and on his jaw in 2006. Complications in 2006 led to more surgery and months of recuperation. He lost his ability to speak.

When asked about another operation to restore his voice, Ebert shakes his head.

Ebert has been a film critic for the Sun-Times since 1967. In 1975, he became the first journalist to win a Pulitzer Prize for movie criticism.

His thumb, pointing up or down, was the main logo of the televised movie review shows he co-hosted, first with Gene Siskel of the rival Chicago Tribune and – after Siskel’s death in 1999 – with his Sun-Times colleague Richard Roeper.

The Esquire article describes a moment where Ebert begins to type on his computer. He presses a button and the speakers light up. “I’ve never said this before,” the voice says, “but we were born to be Siskel and Ebert.” The voice then says: “I just miss the guy so much.”

Besides his film reviews, Ebert writes a blog and has published numerous books.
