  • Orwak 3605 – new big baler in the product range

In January Orwak launched model 3605, which is the most recent addition to its baler assortment! Model 3506 is a new player in the high end of the capacity range. Only about a year ago, Orwak introduced its largest and strongest baler Orwak 3610. Now these two models are teaming up to take on the most challenging assignments presented by the customers in the industry, supermarket and warehouse & logistic center segments. Both balers have a press force of 50 ton and the same generous loading aperture! They are developped to efficiently take care of large volumes of packaging material. Cardboard boxes and wrappings are reduced by up to 10:1, as they are firmly compacted into high density bales.

Two logistic concepts – a matter of priority
Why is Orwak then introducing a new baler, which is so similar to model 3610? Orwak’s machines are exported worldwide and the logistic systems out there are diverse. The customers also have different priorities and expectations on what a high capacity baler should offer. To meet these challenges, Orwak has introduced two options.

If the goal is to attain a commercial bale that weighs more than 500 kg, Orwak 3610 is the right choice. 3610 is large and takes some space, but it generates a bale that weighs up to 550 kg!

Orwak 3605 offers optimal transport logistics on geographical markets, where the bale dimensions 800 x 1200 mm are required as standard for a maximum pay load per truck. The baler is a bit smaller and produces lighter bales that weigh up to 450 kg. There is overall a much broader application area with both 3605 and 3610 on the team! A material selector makes the choice between cardboard and soft plastic easy.

For convenient and efficient waste handling, both Orwak 3605 and 3610 are equipped with autostart and a sliding door that opens automatically after each cycle.

  • Ouch, that Hearse! Maserati Quattroporte works the graveyard shift

Some of us – okay, one of us – here at Autoblog may disagree, but there’s no shortage of people who think the Maserati Quattroporte is one of the most beautiful four-door works of automotive art this side of a Toyota Prius. All the more so after having driven it in Austria. So why, then, do so many coachbuilders seem bent on ruining it?

We’ve seen Quattroportes covered in shattered glass, dipped in 24-karat gold, and wrapped in Burberry tartan. We’ve seen ’em stretched beyond recognition, tweaked into touring cars, turned into station wagonstwice, actually – even an old one transformed into a fire truck. Yes, a fire truck. And now this: A Maserati hearse.

Modified by Intercar Modena – a company that offers funerial conversions of everything from Ssanyong Rextons to BMW sidecar motorcycles – the Quattroporte hearse is, well… there’s really not much to say about it other than it’s a hearse. Based on a Quattroporte. And while there aren’t many worse things you could do with a Maserati, there are worse ways to go.

  • Sony Acquires iCyt And Officially Enters Flow Cytometry Business

Sony has acquired iCyt Mission Technology, Inc. (iCyt), a leading producer of high-performance cell sorters used for stem cell and disease research, through its U.S. subsidiary, Sony Corporation of America (SCA). With this acquisition, Sony is using its expertise and technologies to enter the flow cytometry business in life science field. iCyt, founded in 1995 and headquartered in Champaign, Illinois, designs, manufactures and sells flow cytometers, associated reagents and services.

Flow cytometry is a technique for counting and examining microscopic particles, such as cells and chromosomes, by suspending them in a stream of fluid and passing them by an electronic detection apparatus. It allows simultaneous multiparametric analysis of the physical and/or chemical characteristics of up to thousands of particles per second. Flow cytometry is routinely used in the diagnosis of health disorders, especially blood cancers, but has many other applications in both research and clinical practice.

“Sony brings an amazing level of technology and engineering capability to the field of cytometry,” said Gary Durack, founder, President and CEO of iCyt. “As a Sony company, iCyt will be able to leverage Sony’s global resources to deliver a variety of innovative solutions to the cell analysis market. This is truly a win for iCyt, its customers, and all who will benefit from these advances.”

“We are very pleased to welcome Gary Durack, who has extensive experience in the flow cytometry industry, and iCyt to the Sony family,” said Keiji Kimura, EVP of Sony. “iCyt’s experience and technologies will be valuable assets for Sony as it expands into this new business domain. We are confident that this acquisition will accelerate the development of Sony’s flow cytometry business by combining Sony’s expertise in the manufacturing of consumer products with the technological assets of iCyt.”

As a wholly-owned subsidiary of SCA, iCyt plans to develop advanced technologies and deliver new products in collaboration with Sony. Gary Durack will continue to lead the company through this period of growth and expansion.
New products and advancements will be announced at CYTO 2010, the upcoming Congress of the International Society for Advancement of Cytometry (ISAC), in Seattle in May 2010.

Sony has been exploring healthcare applications for its consumer-based optic technologies, such as those used for Blu-ray discs and its advanced data transmission technologies. Recent progress in regenerative medicine has highlighted the importance of cell analysis and, specifically, flow cytometry, an indispensable tool for research. Sony plans to realize unique technological advances in flow cytometry through the application of its core technologies. As part of this effort, Sony and iCyt have been jointly developing new flow cytometry devices since April 2009. Through this acquisition, Sony expects to accelerate its development of next-generation cell analysis systems and deliver innovative products to research and clinical laboratories around the world.

  • Five Reasons Not To Get Swept Up In App Madness

Sun / Intel This post is part of the IT Innovation series, sponsored by Sun & Intel. Read more at ITInnovation.com.
Of course, the content of this post consists entirely of the thoughts and opinions of the author.

One of the things I didn’t get a chance to discuss in my recap of Midem was that there was definitely an undercurrent of people thinking that “apps” are the “answer.” There were a bunch of app companies there, and they were swamped with interest, and lots of people seem to be looking at Apple’s “success” with the iPhone app market as a chance to regain control, and with it, something to charge for directly. While I don’t think many people were expecting apps to be “the answer,” there was certainly an impression that apps are going to be a big part of the future. As I’ve made clear in the past, I’m pretty skeptical that this sort of app madness is really sustainable (or all that lucrative). There are a few reasons for this:

    1. Very, very, very few apps make very much money. We’ve been suggesting this for a while, and the numbers seem to support it: there really isn’t that much money being made directly on selling apps, even on the iPhone. Sure, lots of apps may be selling in aggregate, but very few individual apps make very much money.
    2. Apps are still loss leader/low-margin leaders for hardware makers, and they know it. Sure, Apple wants app developers to be happy, but first and foremost it wants to sell more hardware, which is where it makes its money. And it knows as well as anyone that the more powerful the device is, the more reasons there are to buy the hardware. That means the hardware makers actually have incentive to push the price of apps down (or encourage free apps). This pressure will only get stronger over time.
    3. Apps can be copied too. This is the one that seems the most obvious to me, but seems to get very little attention from those who believe totally in the app revolution. Apps are still digital files and they can (and are) copied regularly. Thinking that putting everything into an app is an easy response by itself to unauthorized copying is a bit short-sighted.
    4. Future standards will break down some walls. While it won’t happen that fast, and probably won’t happen in all areas where apps exist, things like HTML 5 will certainly break down the walled gardens found on various app stores. Yes, native apps give a better user experience for now, but web standards will get better and better and allow more to be done via the web, totally bypassing any app gatekeeper (and paywall), just like Google did with Google Voice on the iPhone. We’ve seen this before. The desktop used to be ruled by client-side apps, and then lots of those apps went (or are in the process of going) web-based.
    5. App overload. While there is a group of folks who constantly get new apps, an awful lot of people get a few apps, get themselves comfortable and then never go back to buy another app. There are really only so many apps most people need, and once they have them, there’s little reason to keep getting more.

This isn’t to say that anyone should be ignoring the app space, or that there’s no money to made in apps. It’s just that the folks acting like it’s going to be “the way” that things are done in the future are going way overboard. It definitely still makes sense to have some sort of app strategy and to play in the space somehow, just not to bet everything on it. And some apps can certainly make money, but a key might be to focus not on selling the app itself, but on using the apps to provide a scarcity. For example, I’ve heard good things about the new This American Life iPhone app, though it’s mainly because of the convenience it provides over alternatives for now. Alternatively, you could see apps that drive people to other scarcities doing quite well. But focusing on just selling apps because that’s the next big thing? Might not be the best strategy for most…

  • Study: Want to improve your odds of surviving a crash? Have another sammich

    Filed under:

There aren’t a lot of positives about being overweight, but a study by the University of Michigan shows that there could be one reason for the chunky among us to celebrate. U of M studied 300,000 traffic fatalities obtained from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration between 1998 and 2008, and it has reportedly found that overweight people had a 22 percent lower fatality rate than underweight people. However, the story changes for the worse if you’re a man with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 35 to 50 and you are not wearing a safety belt. The study shows that obese men are 10 percent more likely to die in an accident if they don’t buckle up.

There was reportedly no statistical evidence that showed that females were affected by their weight in a crash. Unfortunately, there was evidence that women were 1.1 times as likely to die in a car crash then were men. And everyone is safer when buckled up, as evidenced by the not-so-surprising observation that those who do not fasten their safety belts are 2.1 times more likely to die in a car accident. U of M says that the study does show that the large mass of some men shows that airbags and seat belts may need to be redesigned in the future because their larger size could possibly be overwhelming the safety equipment. Maybe we won’t have that extra pastrami on rye after all.

Why Porsche insists on releasing videos without sound is beyond us but the Stuttgart automaker is at it again with a video of the new 2010 Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid. Nonetheless, we did come across promo video for the 911 GT3 R Hybrid with some background music that makes viewing it a little more exciting.

Hit the jump for the two videos.

Click here for our original post on the 2010 Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid.

Refresher: Power for the 2010 Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid comes from a flywheel system unlike a conventional battery-electric hybrid system. In this case, electrical front axle drive with two electric motors developing 161-hp, supplementing the 480-hp 4.0L inline-6 that powers the two rear-wheels. The flywheel system gathers kinetic energy under braking to fuel the two electric-motors and after each boost of charge, the two motors provide 6 to 8 second jolts of power.

  • Macworld Expo 2010: Best of Show

Just before opening the show floor to the 2010 Macworld Expo, the editors of Macworld and Matt Marsahll, the founder of VentureBeat, announced the winners of this year’s Macworld Expo Best of Show. The winners this year heavily favor the iPhone or hardware solutions with very little Macintosh software represented. From that group of 12 winners, seven were chosen to give six-minute demonstrations of their products on stage in the style of the DEMO conference.

I made a few notes on a couple of the products that intrigued me. You can get the full details at Macworld.com.

Canson Papershow has an interesting take on the digital pen trend. Papershow lets you draw on special paper that is printed with invisible microdots that let the camera in the pen track the exact position of the pen. The trick here is that the software is focused around live streaming of the pen position, rather than capture of what was written for transfer to the computer later. You can write and draw right on top of your slide presentation in real-time. The solution consists of the pen, the special paper, and a USB stick with the software on it. A nifty little product that offers something (live streaming) that is not available in other digital pens.

Carina Software SkyFi is a Wi-Fi access point with a RS-232 serial port that lets you drive an automated telescope mount. I think there will probably also be some cool applications for this device in the home automation business where some high end home theater equipment still comes with RS-232 interfaces for control where Infrared might be impractical or unreliable.

FastMac U-Socket is a wall socket replacement that includes two USB ports.

Frolicware Autopark provides iPhone software to help you find where you parked.

Inrix Traffic Pro lets you use your iPhone to plan the best route to your destination before you leave by analyzing traffic and historical trends.

Kanex HDMI to Mini DisplayPort Connector enables the video-in port on your 27″ iMac so that you can use that beautiful screen with a Blu-ray player, PS3, Xbox 360, etc.

Marketcircle Billings Touch is a gorgeous iPhone app that can work standalone or as a companion to the desktop version of the Billings invoicing application.

Microvision ShowWX is a laser-based pico projector that can project a bright, colorful image on any surface in a package about the size of an iPod Classic. Because the light source is a pinpoint laser and not a diffuse LED, the image is always in focus, even on an uneven surface. These devices, priced at a reasonable $500, might be perfect for the road warrior looking to lighten their load. I talked with Matt Nichols of Microvision on the show floor for a bit, and the technology here came out of Defense research into wearable heads-up displays. While this pico projector won’t make you Robocop, it might be nearly as useful as Teflon.

Quickoffice Connect Mobile Suite lets you connect to your documents in cloud storage and edit documents and spreadsheets on your iPhone.

Sachmanya Yapper is a web-based service for quickly creating iPhone (and Android) apps from existing RSS feeds. They have special Macworld Expo discount pricing through Saturday. Be sure to check it out now if you’re interested because the discount is substantial.

Ten One Design Inklet is software that lets you use your trackpad as a pressure-sensitive drawing tablet.

The DEMO format for this year’s presentation was quite good and a nice change from the standard award show presentations. The heavy emphasis on iPhone and hardware solutions this year gave me the impression that some innovation in Mac software was overlooked. Next year, perhaps Macworld Expo will just flat out change the name to the iPad Innovation Awards.
