  • Spring Design’s Alex eReader Goes on Sale

Spring Design is announcing today that their dual screen Alex eReader has gone on sale via their website at www.springdesign.com. For $399, customers can pick up the eReader that supports EPUB, PDF, HTML and TXT formats.  According to Spring Design, pre-orders are expected to start shipping out no later than mid-April.

Weighing less than 1 pound (11 oz), the Alex measures 4.7″ X 8.9″ and features a 6″ EPD (Electronic Paper Display) screen and a full color 3.5″ Android-based touchscreen LCD.  Users can download or add their own content to a microSD card as the Alex supports up to 32GB cards.  WiFi and USB 2.0 connections allow for future updates.

While the EPD screen provides easy reading of ebooks and text, the LCD screen allows for more dynamic functions, like video and web browsing.  Users can also annotate and highlight what they are reading, or link to relevant audio, video, and web pages.  The Duet Navigator lets owners view content on both screens at once.

Spring Design’s  LinkNotes lets authors insert hyperlinks in their books, periodicals, and documents  that show up on the EPD.  The end user can then click on these links and then pull up relevant web-based information or multimedia to help take the reading experience beyond simple words.  Down the road, tools like these will be handy for teachers and professors looking to provide study notes and more to an already-existing textbook.

  • Report Shows Droid Beats iPhone 1M Benchmark

Did you know that it took the iPhone only 74 days to reach 1 million units sold?  Oh you’ve heard that, huh?  Well, did you know that the Motorola Droid moved more units in the same time frame?  Yeah, you probably didn’t expect that.  Frankly, neither did we.  The latest report from Flurry shows the Droid pushing 1.05 million handsets in the first 74 days of release, eclipsing the number set by Apple.

There are a number of contributing factors as to how this is possible and Flurry points them out.  For starters, the iPhone had to contend with the general perception that handsets were for more than just making and receiving phone calls.  Until the iPhone came out, most consumers viewed smart phones as something for business users or technically proficient users.  A few years later, smart phones are quickly replacing feature phones for users who are coming out of contract.  The general public knows that you can have an easy-to-use phone that’s both fun and highly functional.

The Droid also benefited from being released in the middle of the busiest buying season of the year while the iPhone was dropped in the middle of the year.  It doesn’t hurt to have a $100 million ad campaign blitzing consumers from all angles either.

Another reason for the Droid’s success is the carrier it’s paired with.  Verizon is the largest provider in the US with over 90 million subscribers while AT&T was at just around 68 million customers when the iPhone was released.

For a couple of years now, people have been looking for the iPhone killer.  Verizon and Motorola jumped all over that and sold the Droid as exactly that – the most capable phone in the world, on the biggest network.

As great as this figure is for Android, that number could be higher.  One thing that’s not pointed out in the report is how consumers have a considerably better selection of smart phones to choose from.  Were there not other Android phones or the evolved BlackBerry lanscape, the Droid would look just that much better.

Looking at the super phone that is the Nexus One over its first 90 days, one would get the sense that it’s a monumental failure.  After moving 135,000 units, it’s only a fraction of the figures set by the Droid and iPhone.  However, there are a few things to consider.  First, advertising is done via web, primarily through Google AdWords.  Secondly, the means by which one purchases the phone is vastly different than anything before it.  There’s no stopping by your local T-Mobile to pick one of these up.  Speaking of the carrier, they’re in a distant fourth place with just over 33 million subscribers.  While we can’t point to any one of these as the reason behind such a relatively small number, nonetheless they are contributing factors.

Over time, we can likely expect two things:  As the Google store evolves and adds more handsets and carriers into the mix, the general awareness will help new devices get added exposure.  On the other hand, it will be harder and harder to beat the 1M benchmark set by Droid.  More choice in phones and providers will spread market share out amongst everyone.

  • BlackBerry Users Pine for Android

A recent Crowd Science study indicates that BlackBerry users have wandering eyes and are considering other platforms for their next handset.  Roughly 1/3rd of BlackBerry owners would switch to an Android phone, specifically the Nexus One.  According to Crowd Science CEO John Martin, this indicates a restlessness with the current brand and allure of other platforms.  On the other hand, Android users are very loyal to their handsets.  Roughly 90% of those surveyed planned to stay with green robot-powered phones.

The survey also found (PDF) that Android users tend to be younger and less affluent than iPhone and Blackberry users.  We’ve heard similar things from other reports as well.  We say, hook ’em young anyways.  With a 90% loyalty rate, that sounds like life long Android owners.  For more on the survey, including additional results and the details on how things were conducted, head to the Crowd Science blog.

  • More Evidence of a Sprint Nexus One?

With the Nexus One headed to Verizon and Vodafone in the coming weeks, customers on other networks are starting to wonder if and when they’re provider will be offering the phone.  One such carrier, Sprint could really use a new Android handset with high end specs like Nexus One.

One of our readers was recently in an online chat with a member of the Sprint team.  Being that he will be ready to get a new handset soon, the subject of the phone came up.

Here’s the interesting part of the transcribed chat:

03/12/2010 11:40:46PM   Rick Bradley: “Questions about upgrading my existing phone”
03/12/2010 11:41:17PM   Agent (Brad M): “May I have your concern in detail?”
03/12/2010 11:42:58PM   Rick Bradley: “Yeah. I’m due for to upgrade my phone to a new handset in the next couple of weeks. I definately want to get the best phone available. I have heard through the rumor mill that Sprint MIGHT be offering the nexus one with google possibly as soon as april”
. I’d really like to use this phone and I’d hate to have to go to verizon.. is there any chance you could confirm or deny this rumor of sprint carrying the nexus one ?
03/12/2010 11:44:08PM   Agent (Brad M): “Sure. Let me check this.”
03/12/2010 11:45:16PM   Rick Bradley: “thank you for checking”
03/12/2010 11:45:28PM   Agent (Brad M): “You are welcome.”
03/12/2010 11:47:02PM   Agent (Brad M): “I am sorry. We do not have any update on the launch of this phone right now.”
03/12/2010 11:47:59PM   Agent (Brad M): “However, I have notated your account.”
03/12/2010 11:48:13PM   Rick Bradley: “in what capacity ?”
03/12/2010 11:48:43PM   Agent (Brad M): “Once we launch this phone, you will be notified with our promotional advertisement.”
    03/12/2010 11:49:52PM   Session Ended

While this is not proof of anything concrete, it certainly sounds like Sprint expects to offer the Nexus One in some capacity.   Whether that’s directly through the carrier or more in a supportive role has yet to be figured out.  Also, the echoes a conversation someone else had with the carrier just a few weeks back.

What do you guys think?  Excited by the prospects of the super phone on the Now Network?

  • Vodafone UK Showing Nexus One “Coming Soon”

Back when the Nexus One was launched, the Google store listed a placeholder for Vodafone and Verizon with a “Spring 2010” launch.  With the season technically kicking off next Saturday, Vodafone appears to be getting ready to offer the HTC super phone.  The carrier’s website now lists the handset as “coming soon” which has us wondering whether or not they’ll offer it through their own channel in addition to Google’s.  We’ve recently heard similar things about Verizon so we’d not be surprised.  Then again, how else will Google get their store built out and start changing buying habits if they are only another option instead of the option?

Thanks for the heads up Martin!

  • T-Mobile’s Voice Plus Beta Has Started

After nearly a month of waiting,  T-Mobile has started their Voice Plus Beta program for G1 owners.  Emails are being sent out this evening to those of you who signed up to participate in a new service to manage calls and voicemail on your Android phone.

Heads up!  To install the application on your phone, you will need to update the G1’s software, wiping your phone in the process.  T-Mobile does provide a few steps to walk you through the process so you can backup your data.  If you run into any snags, you’re advised to not call Customer Care.  Dialing 611 will not do you a bit of good.  Instead, users are directed to specific channels for feedback and troubleshooting.

    Features of Voice Plus Beta:

    • Call Divert: Carve out a little peace and quiet by sending selected numbers straight to voicemail without ringing your phone.
    • Call Defer: Let callers know you’re busy and schedule a convenient time for you to call them back.  Send them a text message that acknowledges their call and that you will respond at a later time.
    • Visual Voicemail: Easily manage your voicemail! View a list of who left a voicemail, with the time of the message and its length.  Choose which to listen to now and which to review later.
    • City ID: Get more information about the calls you receive.  The city and state information of incoming calls is displayed.

  • HTC Incredible Poised for CTIA

The HTC Incredible has been seen in the wild, yet again, leading us to believe the handset has been prepped and readied for a CTIA announcement.  Dressed in Verizon black and red, this super phone has an awful lot going on under the hood.  If you look at the bottom right of the battery cover you will see the Verizon logo silk-screened in the corner. We’d be very surprised if CTIA comes and goes without a word from anyone.

We’ve scoured over 107 pages of the AndroidForums post where these images come from and have collected some specs.  Since nothing is confirmed by HTC or Verizon, these details are subject to change.

With that out of the way, here’s what we can expect out of the Incredible:

    • 1 GHz Snapdragon processor
    • 3.7 inch AMOLED WVGA 800×480
    • 512MB ROM | 1GB RAM
    • 8 megapixel camera with dual LED flash and autofocus

  • Beta Test This! Opera Mini 5

Ok, so maybe you like the stock Android browser but aren’t necessarily in love with it.  Good thing for you the platform is flexible and you’re not stuck with just one option!  Hot on the heels of January’s 4.2, Opera has just released their Mini 5 beta browser into the Android Market.

Opera’s Mini is a feature-rich browser that does a lot of the heavy lifting on the server side.  Data is compressed by Opera before it even hits your phone so pages load considerably faster. While Mini works fine on phones with less horsepower or smaller screens, it really shines on handsets like the Nexus One. Tabs and the new Speed Dial feature play well with the bright 3.7-inch AMOLED screen.

  • Rumor: Sony Ericsson Xperia Series to See Android 2.2 in 2010

One phone we’ve been hearing about for what seems like an eternity is the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10.  After getting announced back in 2009, we’ve been patiently awaiting its arrival here in the US.  The biggest problem we’ve seen facing the X10 is that it’s slated to arrive with Android 1.6 under the hood.  According to CNET Asia, the Xperia line of handsets could get an update  to Android 2.2/Froyo  later this year. We’d previously heard that the phones will ultimately get an update to a newer version of Android, but which exact iteration wasn’t clear.

We assumed this would be version 2.1 but were informed today that it “will be an Eclair variant, so it could be 2.1 or even 2.2”, according to the spokesperson.

To dampen your enthusiasm just bit, we should point out that “later this year” has a 9-month window. This could be pushed out near the end of the year and possibly later than other handset makers. For all we know, Android could be at 2.5 or 3.0 by then.
