Three New HTC Codenames Sniffed Out
One of Engadget’s tipsters was digging through an HTC site designed for internal component bidding and unearthed a few new product codenames. You can now add Glacier, LED, and Vision to the list of possible future Android phones. We say possible only because HTC is still committed to Windows Mobile handsets as well. The Vision model has “TMO” listed next to it which could indicate a T-Mobile release. As to whether this means T-Mobile UK or T-Mobile USA remains to be seen. According to Engadget their source was also able to dig up the Incredible and Legend codenames far in advance of official releases.

Motorola Droid to Get Android 2.2 (Froyo) in “Near Future”
Not content with their Android 2.1 update from a few weeks ago, Motorola Droid owners are already looking for 2.2 (Froyo) information. Our inbox and twitter feed has been hammered with requests from Droid users begging for the latest Android release. “How long will we have to wait?” seems to be the question of the week. The guys over at SlashGear decided to reach out to Motorola to see if the handset maker has an update in store.
“We’re excited to see Google’s news of the next version of the Android operating system and look forward to integrating it on our Android-based devices as it’s made available to the open source community.”
While I can’t comment on specifics, we do expect DROID by Motorola users will receive Android 2.2 as a software upgrade in the near future.
Until someone can get Motorola to pin down an actual time frame, ‘near future’ will have to suffice. It could be worse Droid owners – you could be running MOTOBLUR on Android 1.5 like Backflip, Devour, Cliq, and Cliq XT users.

HTC EVO 4G Has Been Rooted

We can’t say we’re shocked at all by this – Google and Sprint did give put a couple thousand of these right into the hands of the guys who love to tinker with phones most. It just so happens Matt Matracci was one of those guys in attendance. A few buddies and a couple of hours later… presto! While the full step-by-step process has yet to be revealed, you can watch the video below for the time being. Any guesses as to how long before Froyo hits the EVO 4G? Unofficially of course.

Is This the Droid Heir Apparent?
Hi there! We noticed you staring at that picture up above. You like? Yeah, that is presumably the follow up to the Motorola Droid from Verizon. It looks great, doesn’t it? Would you like to hear the rumored specs? They’re just about the nicest we’ve seen on an Android phone to date. Okay, here goes…
As we looked around a bunch of posts within Howard Forums, the best we can piece together is this:
- 4.1″ TFT FWVGA screen
- Texas Instruments OMAP 3630 Processor
- 2GB -8GB internal memory
- Android 2.1 (Eclair), possibly 2.2 (Froyo) upon launch
- MOTOBLUR (BLUR community chat)
- 8 MP camera with 720p video recording
- 1080p output via HDMI port
- Roughly 9mm in thickness
We’ve seen July listed a few times as the release time frame so Android 2.2 could make the cut. However, based on Motorola’s history, we’re guessing it’s Android 2.1 at launch. As for the name of this thing, you guess is as good as ours at this point. We’ve heard Droid 2, Droid Xtreme, Shadow, Droid Shadow, and a couple others. Of all the names we’ve seen tossed around, Shadow seems to stick the best. On the other hand, the “Droid” label is clearly marked in the picture. Guess we’ll just have to wait to find out, won’t we?

A Few Acer Liquid Stream Details
There were a handful of phones on display at last week’s Google I/O which have yet to cross our radar. As good of a job as we think we do in keeping up with handsets, there are plenty out there we’ve yet to cover. One such handset is the Acer Liquid Stream. With only a display model behind a case to tease us, we were left to guess the specs. That was until we talked to a little birdy.According to our tipster, the Acer Liquid Stream currently runs Android 2.1 and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip although the speed wasn’t 100 percent known. We’d like to assume it’s the full 1GHz, but it could be underclocked to 768MHz. The phone also features a 5 megapixel camera that records in 720p with HDMI output, Bluetooth, WiFi, and GPS. We’ll be doing our best to piece together the rest of the picture so check back often!

Verizon Stops Hiding the Droid Incredible, Shows it in Latest Commercial
Verizon’s newest commercial for the Droid Incredible has landed online in YouTube fashion. Taking off from the previous teaser, viewers are starting to learn more about the handset it self. We like the fact that the carrier actually decided to show the phone, albeit briefly, at the end of the clip. It’s one thing to talk about how powerful a phone is, it’s another thing to show how sleek it is or that it’s touch-only.

Verizon CEO Talks Android Tablets and LTE Phones
Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam is doing his part to rally excitement for Android phones and tablets. Big Red’s boss was recently at the Reuters Global Technology Summit where he divulged a few goodies. What kind of goodies? How about Motorola, Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics working on tablets that run off of Android? Tablets due as early as the second half of this year. He also went on to say that LTE-capable handsets from Motorola, HTC, and LG will be arriving between now and this time next year. The carrier expects to cover 25-30 markets later this year when they turn on the their LTE network.
These forthcoming phones and tablets will run on Verizon’s current CDMA network for the time being. Down the road, customers will be able to upgrade them so that they are compatible with the LTE network.
Fun fact: McAdam says the new network will be fast enough to download full HD movies in under a minute.

LONDON – 18 May, 2010, 07.00 CEST – HTC Corporation, a global designer of smartphones, today introduced HTC Wildfire™, a new HTC Sense-based Android phone that integrates the most popular social networks to help bring your friends closer to you. HTC Wildfire closely follows the success of the acclaimed HTC Desire and makes the company’s signature HTC Sense experience accessible to a younger audience.
“Today’s social networks provide an essential forum for friendship with more than 400 million users* – many of whom are young adults – actively sharing their lives with their friends through Facebook,” said Florian Seiche, Vice President, HTC EMEA. “HTC Wildfire makes the HTC Sense experience available to young mobile users for the first time. It brings all your communications into one place, whether it’s through Facebook, Twitter, text messages, images or email, ensuring that you are never far away from the conversation and always close to your friends.”
HTC Wildfire helps you stay connected with those who are most important to you through HTC Sense, a user experience focused on putting people at the centre by making phones work in a more simple and natural way. You won’t miss out on the fun as HTC’s Friend Stream application seamlessly gathers and displays content from social networks like Facebook, Twitter, and Flickr into one organised stream of updates. HTC Wildfire enables you to stay up to date with your friends’ posts, comments, alerts and photos, wherever you are.
In addition, each contact viewed in HTC Wildfire’s address book includes a thread of recent communications with that person, including when you last spoke, recent text messages and emails, and social network updates. When your friend calls, HTC Caller ID displays their Facebook profile photo and latest update, as well as a reminder if their birthday is fast approaching.
Thanks to a new app sharing widget, HTC Wildfire enables you to recommend an application by email, text message or over social networks. Your friends will receive a link allowing them to find the application on the Android Market with a single click and download it to their phone.
Florian Seiche continued, “We understand that people need a better way to navigate their way through the tens of thousands of applications that are currently available on the Android Market. In fact, our own independent research found that consumers are not only hungry for the latest and most popular applications that their friends are using, they want an easier way to find and download them. For the first time ever, you can recommend the newest and coolest apps to a friend or group of friends with HTC Wildfire. With so many applications to choose from, there’s a world of content to discover and pass along to your friends.”
HTC’s latest advanced smartphone is great for viewing and sharing photos on Flickr and for surfing the internet thanks to its 3.2-inch capacitive touch screen. A five-megapixel camera with auto focus and LED flash allows you to capture special moments, while a 3.5mm audio jack and micro SD card slot mean you are never without your favourite songs.
Availability
The new HTC Wildfire will be broadly available to customers across major European and Asian markets from Q3 2010.
