  • Uh-Oh! Samsung Galaxy Hits FCC with AT&T Bands

Yep, you read that right.  That big, beautiful Samsung Galaxy S has been spotted hanging out in the FCC with AT&T bands in tow. You’ll have to forgive us if we’re not 100% over the moon with this news.  If AT&T keeps in line with their recent Android strategy, the Galaxy S could be hampered by lock-downs and restrictions.  As much as we’d like to be spreading nothing but positivity, we have to sprinkle some trepidation in the mix.  Here’s hoping Ma Bell doesn’t do anything stupid with the phone, like restrict apps outside of the Android Market or remove Google in favor of Yahoo.

  • T-Mobile myTouch Slide Shows up in the Wild Wearing a Pretty Red Dress

We were hoping that the myTouch Slide would have picked up a bit of sexiness since we last checked in.  It seems T-Mobile and HTC might be trying to do exactly that, putting a shiny gloss of red paint on the handset.  A recently leaked photo from TmoNews has the phone looking every bit ready for a release next month.  Sure, the red looks nice and the handset appears to be  solidly built.  Now, if we could just address that confusing looking keyboard before it hits shelves…

Until we hear otherwise, we’re going to roll with the following specs:

    • Sliding 4-Row QWERTY
    • 320×48o screen resolution
    • 1300mAh Battery
    • MicroSD slot
    • Optical trackpad/ Push Button
    • Camera w/ LED flash
    • 3.5 mm Headphone Jack
    • 320×48o screen resolution

  • Did the myTouch Slide Just Pass Through the FCC?

The myTouch Slide for T-Mobile is said to go on sale next month (May 17th) and recent leaks appear to confirm a nearly finished device. The specs started coming together early in the year, around the time the first rumored pics arrive.  A recently filed FCC document lists (and shows) an HTC device with T-Mobile’ AWS support leading many to believe a production model cannot be far off.  To put the rumor to bed, we superimposed the original pics from January with the FCC picture.  As you can tell, the match up is perfect!

  • HTC Incredible Specs Confirmed via Leaked User Manual

The presumed final specs for the HTC Incredible have made their way online thanks to a leaked user guide.  If you’re feeling up to it, you can peruse the entire 200+ page document, reading up on everything the phone does.  For those of you who are just about the hardware and only care about the facts, here’s what you’re looking at:

    • 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon
    • Android 2.1, Sense UI
    • Camera: 8MP with AF, flash
    • Memory: 576MB RAM/512MB ROM
    • 8GB Internal Storage, expandable via microSD
    • Screen: 3.7-inch AMOLED at 480×800.
    • Dimensions: 4.63×2.30×0.47 inches.
    • Weight: 4.6 ounces with battery.
    • Battery: 1300 mAh
    • aGPS, Digital compass, Proximity Sensor, Light sensor
    • Bluetooth 2.1, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n
    • 3.5mm headphone jack

As many of you enthusiasts might know, the Incredible is strikingly similar to the Nexus One and HTC Desire in terms of specs.  It’s probably safe to assume that this is the type of Android phone HTC will be putting out for the next few months.  No sense in going back to the 528MHz chips at this point.  Look for the Incredible on April 29th at a Verizon or Best Buy near you!

  • Manually Install Android 2.1 on your Rooted Samsung Moment

It was rumored earlier in the week that Sprint and Samsung had begun internally testing Android 2.1 on the Moment.  Here we are only a few days removed and the ROM has arrived online.  The update file (for rooted phones) can be found in an SDX-Developers.com forum post.  Among the early reported bug was trouble logging into the Android Market.  Apparently a quick reset of the phone was able to fix that.  Remember kids, taking things into your own hands can sometime be dangerous and result in a $300 paperweight.  Proceed with caution!

The Samsung Moment hasn’t officially joined the Nexus One and Motorola Droid as a 2.1 device but we expect it any day. If you haven’t rooted your Moment, sit back and relax.  It’s coming soon.

  • Download This! iTag

There’s no way around it.  As much as we try to keep our cell phones with us, somehow we still manage to leave them places.  We leave our handsets on the counter at home, in the taxi, on the airplane, and in (yikes) bathrooms.

Check out  a couple of interesting and scary figures about lost phones:

    • Over 85,000 cell phones were lost in Chicago taxis in 2005
    • Disneyland collects over 300 phones a week
    • 8,701 mobile devices were left in Washington/Baltimore taxis over a 6 month period in 2006

Unfortunately, things will only worsen as the number of smart phones grows.  Thankfully companies like iTag are around to help us find out phones and recover them.

Founded in 2007, California-based iTag helps users locate, protect, and recover your lost handsets.  Their free Android application recently landed in the market and it’s making waves.  It was recently selected as a finalist in the CTIA Emerging Technology Awards in Mobile Applications.

If you find yourself with a missing cell phone, you can view its location on a map using iTag’s secure website.  Using some of the tools at your disposal, you can make your phone ring even if it was set to silent.  This is handy for those times when you can’t figure out which room you left your Nexus One in.  One of the best features is that it sends you an alert should someone find your phone and swap the SIM card out.  Included in that message is the phone number associated with the new SIM.

Other options and features in iTag:

    • If someone replaces the SIM card, the new number (or number of the thief) is sent to the web site.
    • If the battery is about to die, the location is sent to the web site.
    • If you can’t recover your phone, iTag backs up the information and allows you to erase all the personal and sensitive information on your phone.
    • You can click a button on the website to make your phone ring even if the phone is set to vibrate or silent. This is useful if you cannot locate your phone in your house or car.

Scan or click the barcode with your Android handset to download iTag for free out of the Android Market!

  • Leaked Pic Shows myTouch Slide Headed for “The Shack”

Looks like we might be ready to start talking about the myTouch Slide again.  A newly leaked image from Radio Shack (The Shack) shows a T-Mobile MyTouch Slide with ‘Image Coming Soon.”  We’re pretty sure we already know what the phone looks like and what some of the details are.  At this point, we’re most interested in learning of launch dates and pricing.  Be sure to check back for more on those as we can get our hands on them!

As a refresher, the rumored specs include a 320×480 resolution touch screen, ARM11 chip, camera with LED flash, 3.5mm headphone jack, microSD memory card slot and a 1300mAh battery.  Hopefully the device has picked up a  touch more polish and sexiness since we last checked in.

  • Watch as Droid Does All Kinds of Wonderful Things [VIDEO]

We just received an email from a member of the M80 team.  Apparently, they are behind some new viral ad campaigns for Motorola and the Droid.  Below, you will find 4 YoutTube clips, each showcasing a different “hidden feature” found in the handset. Did you know that Droid does streetlight changing and trick shots in billiards?  Neither did we!

It’s somewhat refreshing to see the phone getting some exposure and advertising that doesn’t feel like your masculinity is being called into question.  Just a friendly heads up, the fourth video might come off a little sexist depending on your sensitivity or sense of humor.

With four tabs across the top (Latest, Forums, Favorites, More), the app is streamlined and clutter free. All the basic functionality of the forums is there with basic navigation through threads and posts. Other features include reading private messages, checking to see who is online, and reviewing your personal profile. As of right now, editing profiles must still be done via the web.

  • Sprint Releases Their Own Branded Football App

As some of you may already know, Sprint recently lost their title as the NFL’s official wireless service sponsor to Verizon. With the NFL draft just a few days away, many were wondering what the carrier would do to as a reaction. Sprint began rolling out text messages this week to some of their Android users advising them of a new Sprint Football Live application. Whereas previous iterations of their NFL Live apps were wrappers and portals for the official (mobile) website, this version seems to offer more unique mobile content with Sprint branding. As you can see in the pictures the app provides draft information, a mock draft, and access to exclusive blogs from around the internet.

Please note that this only available to customers on Sprint’s network. As for now this means Hero and Moment owners are the only folks able to take advantage of the app. If you happen to be among the lucky few, point your Android browser to http://gospv.com/sfls or run the preloaded older NFL Live app for an update prompt.

Global IP Solutions (GIPS), a provider of voice and video processing in IP communications, has announced their GIPS VideoEngine. This first-to-market tool gives Android developers the ability to integrate video conferencing/video chat into future applications. With each wireless provider offering varying degrees of data speed and reliability, the GIPS VideoEngine handles the heavy lifting and adjusts for packet loss, bandwidth limitations, and more. We can imagine these types of services becoming valuable to developers as handsets like the HTC EVO 4G start arriving. Front-facing cameras and 4G data speeds are just begging for video conferencing and next-gen chat applications.

  • First Pic of Alleged Samsung Moment 2 Arrives

It doesn’t seem to be taking Samsung and Sprint very long to follow up last fall’s Moment handset.  What you are looking at above is rumored to be the first picture of the SPH-M910 Moment 2, obviously headed for the Now Network. As the gossip tells us, this will be the first Android 2.1 phone launched with Sprint, only months after the first go ’round. Depending on your point of view, you might be happy to learn that this is loaded with the new TouchWiz 3.0 interface. If it’s anything like the Galaxy S experience, we’ll take it.

We’re waiting to hear what the specs are but we expect it’s not going to be a huge jump from the original device. We’d love to see SuperAMOLED in that screen, but we’re not expecting it.  The device has a few subtle changes to the design, juggling the keys around slightly and adding a search button to the display.  Check back for more information as we can gather it!

  • ComScore Report Indicates Android Momentum in Full Swing

According to yesterday’s comScore findings, Android posted a 5.2 percent gain in markest share in the November 2009 – February 2010 time frame, considerably better than the likes of Apple and Research in Motion. The growth is obviously  a result of the Motorola Droid and Nexus One getting released over the study period.

To be fair, Android-based phones still only account for 9 percent of the total smartphone market here in the United States while RIM is top dog at 42.1 percent. Android sits at fourth place overall, also trailing Apple (25.4%) and Windows Mobile (15.1%).

While Android was the big winner, Microsoft was the big loser, dropping 4 percentage points from the previous spot. Another quarter or so with that trend and Android might eclipse Ballmer and Pals. Don’t expect things to go down so easily as T-Mobile’s new HTC HD2 is getting tons of praise and helping the WinMo cause.
