    By Matt Hawes

On January 27, Congressman Paul will be coming to Baltimore, Maryland for a free and open to the public event.

Dr. Paul will be speaking on “The Case Against the Fed” as part of Thomas DiLorenzo’s “Moral Foundations of Capitalism” Lecture Series.

The event will start at 7pm eastern and take place at McGuire Hall, Loyola University Maryland, 4501 N. Charles St., Baltimore, MD.

Here’s one very important piece of information as published on the LewRockwell.com blog by Dr. DiLorenzo:

One further detail: The event is free and open to the public, but tickets are required. Call the McManus Theater Box Office at Loyola (410-617-5932) between 11-2 M-F to reserve your tickets. They can be picked up on or after Jan. 21 or on the evening of the event.

This is guaranteed to be an exciting, informative night.  Seating is limited, so reserve your tickets today!  And be sure to bring some family and friends along to hear why we don’t need a central bank.

Update: It appears that tickets for the main room are sold out, but we’ve been told that there are still some overflow seats available.  We’re not sure how many at this time.

  • Press Release: Voters Reject Government Health Care

    By Gary Howard

Washington, D.C., January 20, 2010 – Last night, voters in Massachusetts continued a growing trend by sending the message to Washington that the unpopular health care legislation may be a serious liability for its supporters in Congress.

Over the past few months, citizens nationwide have voiced their displeasure with the proposed government takeover of medicine through rallies, town hall disruptions, and recent elections. According to national polls and polls of Massachusetts voters, much of the public recognizes the need for reform but disagrees with the measures offered by the current health care bill.

Alternatives to the current bill, like the ones offered by Campaign for Liberty’s project Operation Health Freedom (http://www.OperationHealthFreedom.com), may have a better chance of giving the public the solutions they seek.

“Campaign for Liberty is proposing that Congress try passing legislation that promotes true health freedom,” said John Tate, President of Campaign for Liberty. “The same government that has given us trillions of dollars in unfunded liabilities for Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security is not going to fix our health care system with this latest bureaucratic scheme. It’s time to vote health freedom.”

The Operation Health Freedom package includes legislation introduced by Congressman Ron Paul. The cornerstone of the package is H.R. 1495, the Comprehensive Health Care Reform Act of 2009, which provides all Americans with a tax credit for 100% of health care expenses, a tax credit for premiums for high-deductible insurance policies connected with a Health Savings Account (HSA), and allows seniors to use funds in an HSA to pay for a medigap policy.  In addition, it makes all medical expenses tax deductible.

Also included are H.R. 2629, a bill that prevents the government from requiring people to purchase health insurance, and H.R. 3217, introduced by Congressman John Shadegg, which permits the purchase of health insurance across state lines and will ultimately lower costs due to the resulting competition.

  • TSA Nominee Resigns Amid Controversy

    By Matt Hawes

Erroll Southers, President Obama’s choice to lead the Transportation Security Administration, withdrew from consideration for the position earlier today.  Southers faced criticism from senators and was also weighed down by information that he may have misled Congress concerning his use of a government database to dig up personal information.

    From the Washington Post:

As The Eye first reported in November, Southers told senators that he asked a co-worker’s husband who worked for the San Diego Police Department at the time to run a background check on his ex-wife’s boyfriend.

The incident did little to stop his confirmation by the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. But a day after the panel referred his nomination to the Senate, Southers told lawmakers that he himself had twice conducted the database searches, downloaded confidential law enforcement records and then passed the information on to the police department employee….

Senate opposition was led by Senator Jim DeMint, who not only opposed Southers’ plans for TSA, but was pressing for more information about the database incident.

It’s no surprise, however, that many lawmakers have taken the opportunity to praise Southers and express their disappointment that he has withdrawn his name.  After all, violating civil liberties and abusing your authority to dig up personal information is a central tenet of the government’s approach to security.  A questionable history would only add to his qualifications.

Since the nomination is currently vacant, I’d like to officially take this opportunity to plug my support for Steve Bierfeldt to head up the TSA.

Update: Thanks to Matt Holdridge for designing this “Steve Bierfeldt for TSA Chief 2010” poster!  Now we just need a good campaign slogan… Freedom Takes to the Skies?
