  • Inside BlackBerry Feature: Designing the new BlackBerry Q10

    BlackBerry Q10 Sketches

BlackBerry Q10 availability is just around the corner and soon you’ll be able to get your hands on this much-anticipated smartphone. There’s a lot to be said about the attention to detail that has been put in to crafting this premium smartphone. With a rich heritage of building what some have called the best physical keyboard experience in the industry – the task of taking that experience to the next level for BlackBerry 10 was a welcomed challenge. Over the past few months, I’ve been working with the design team at BlackBerry to understand what goes into building the next iconic BlackBerry smartphone. Here’s what they have to say about designing the gorgeous new BlackBerry Q10.

Feature post from the design team at BlackBerry:
Designing the first physical keyboard smartphone powered by BlackBerry 10 presented us with an interesting design challenge. How do you evolve such an iconic design; one loved by millions upon millions of users around the world?

The gesture based user experience that is core to BlackBerry 10 meant there was no longer a need for dedicated menu keys and the track pad. This allowed us to increase both the size of both the display (30 per cent larger) and the keypad while keeping the overall product approximately the same dimensions.

The gesture based user experience that is core to BlackBerry 10 meant there was no longer a need for dedicated menu keys and the track pad. This allowed us to increase both the size of both the display (30 per cent larger) and the keypad while keeping the overall product approximately the same dimensions.

The frets you see between the keys on the BlackBerry Q10 are thicker than those found on the Bold 9900. These thicker frets separate the keys and allow more room for precise key strikes and helping to build muscle memory, making the right keys easy to find.

The white font feature on black keys is Slate Pro, and is part of the humanist genre which is simply the most legible sans serif style for processing information quickly. The open shapes, varying proportions, subtle stroke differences aid the reader and lend an organic, approachable feel to our User Interface (UI) design.

Slate Pro is the work of Rod McDonald, a Canadian award-winning typeface designer and lettering artist. McDonald designed Slate Pro with the intent to have the typeface function well in print as on-screen.

    BlackBerry Q10 Keyboard

We’ve heard incredibly positive feedback from our users in testing telling us they prefer this new keypad because it allows them to type faster with added comfort.

In keeping with our premium products, meticulous attention has been paid to every detail of the design, the selection of each materials and processes used to build each unit. Here are some examples:

    • The stainless steel fret found across the back of the BlackBerry Q10 helps preserve the finish of the back cover by holding the phone off the surface it is resting on.
    • The glass-weave and soft touch coating used on the back cover is exclusive to the BlackBerry Q10 and have been years in development. By forming the glass weave in to a 3D shape, we have made it incredibly strong. The soft touch finish makes the BlackBerry Q10 easy to hold and feels beautiful in your hand while minimizing fingerprints.
    • Screen Shot 2013-04-23 at 10.47.48 PM

    • The keyboard frets have been designed with a chamfered edge so that they connect with the frame with incredible precision and accuracy
    • Screen Shot 2013-04-23 at 10.47.57 PM

    • The frame is carved out of solid block of forged, 304 stainless steel to make the BlackBerry Q10 strong and durable. Each frame takes 20 minutes to produce through a multi-step computer controlled machining process. The black PVD finish has been chosen to keep the frame from scratching as you keep moving with the BlackBerry Q10.

  • My First Week with the New BlackBerry Q10

    BlackBerry Q10 on bench

Even though I’ve been fortunate enough to have my hands on a BlackBerry Q10 for quite some time, it wasn’t until just last week that I made the switch and started using it as my “daily driver”. In order to describe my experience in one word … I needed to invent a new word. So, I’m coining the phrase “Awesotypetastic” to describe this iconic new device from BlackBerry.

There are a ton of features that make this one of my favorite BlackBerry smartphones of all time, and as the first BlackBerry 10 device to feature a physical keyboard, it has some big shoes to fill.

Since launch I’ve been covering just what an interesting and powerful new mobile experience BlackBerry 10 is. With features like peek, the BlackBerry Hub and BlackBerry Flow built-in, the BlackBerry Q10 combines a classic BlackBerry keyboard and the power of BlackBerry 10. This experience translates well onto the BlackBerry Q10 and it brings some new innovations to market that improve productivity and are enabled by the physical keyboard.

After one week with the device here are three of my favorite new features:

    Instant Action

From the home screen on the BlackBerry Q10, just start typing a command on the physical keyboard to initiate the action. For example, if you want to BBM one of your contacts type “BBM + ” to enter BBM and start your conversation. You can also do this for a number of other actions. I particularly found this useful when using the phone one handed.

    Instant Action Commands

    Keyboard Shortcuts

BlackBerry fans will no doubt appreciate the return of keyboard shortcuts to the device. Simple things like hitting “T” to jump to the top while in the BlackBerry Hub, or hitting “C” to compose a new message add up and help you keep moving quickly and fluidly through the device.

    BlackBerry Q10 keyboard

    Timeless Design

The BlackBerry Q10 is a serious machine. It is built solid with premium materials and components. As soon as I held the BlackBerry Q10 in my hand it was clear to me everything had been specifically chosen for the Q10 to make every inch purpose-built. It is slim, yet solid and the beautiful glass weave back cover on the black color variant is thinner, lighter and stronger than plastic. Combined with the optimized new darker background in apps like Contacts, Remember, BBM, Search, Text Messaging, Adobe Reader, the experience is stunning inside the software and out.

    BlackBerry Q10 profile

There you have it my first impressions and favourite features of the BlackBerry Q10 device. I’ve taken my typing to the next level on this keyboard.  I don’t want to toot my own horn, but I’m a bit of a phenom when it comes to typing on the BlackBerry Q10. Don’t get me wrong, my typing skills on the BlackBerry Z10 are out of this world too. I’m just saying that you folks who love your physical keyboards are probably going to love your life.

  • BlackBerry Introduces: BlackBerry Fan of the Month, April 2013

If using both a phone and a tablet together is a hot tech trend this year, April’s BlackBerry Fan of the Month is ON TREND.

Meet Sergio – a lean, mean, BlackBerry PlayBook-ing-machine. Sergio knows how to work hard and play hard and he uses his BlackBerry PlayBook tablet to make the best of both worlds. In his personal life, Sergio’s BlackBerry PlayBook helps him stay in touch with his loved ones – his wife, in particular (say it with us – ‘awwww!’)! And in his professional life as a successful business owner, Sergio can’t live without his tablet. It allows him to remotely manage inventory for his robotic pool cleaning company and print invoices on demand for customers. The Evernote app on the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet is perfect for taking notes and pictures while on the job. And, best of all, he can use it as a phone whenever he needs to. Sergio is one of the original Super Users in the BlackBerry Support Community Forums. He is extremely helpful and passionate about the BlackBerry PlayBook with impressive stats in the community:

    • Total Posts: 3,704
    • Total Kudos: 215
    • Total Accepted Solutions: 107

Like we said, lean, mean, BlackBerry-PlayBook-ing MACHINE. Ladies and gents, I present to you, our April FOTM, Sergio(@icemanswimmer):

    1. How many years have you been on Team BlackBerry?
    2. I have proudly been part of Team BlackBerry since 2010. Honestly, I have to tell you that it has been a great experience. I never imagined my passion for BlackBerry would lead me here to be part of FOTM.

    3. How many BlackBerry devices have you had in total? Could you list them all out for us?
    4. I have had four – BlackBerry Storm 9530, BlackBerry Bold 9700, BlackBerry PlayBook tablet (I really love this one) and now I’m getting a super sexy BlackBerry Z10!

    5. How many BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) contacts do you currently have?
    6. On my BBM, I only have a select group of people, 24 right now. But I’m sure BlackBerry 10 will put me back in touch with all those that I miss.

    7. What is your favorite BBM emoticon?
    8. Definitely the laughing one. Haha.

    9. What is the best BBM you ever received?
    10. One from a customer saying that the deal was closed in our favor, definitely the best!

    11. Sergio, if you could BBM your BlackBerry, what would you say? How do you think your BlackBerry would respond?
    12. Sincerely? Please don’t tell my wife, though. I would say, I love you and I can’t live without you.

Of course the BlackBerry would answer: Me too!!

    13. Sergio, we know you own your own company, selling pool products. Tell us more about how and when you started this company!
    14. Sure, it’s a long story but I will try to be brief.
My pool business started about six years ago, I never imagined that I would be doing this. Six years ago, I was selling VoiP solutions. One day my partner met some guys that were involved in the Robotic Pool Cleaning business. They showed him all the beautiful things that robots could do, it was awesome and a really great business opportunity in a market that was not existent in Mexico at the time.

We weren’t sure where to start, but, lucky for me, I’m a swimmer and I knew people that own swimming schools or are Coaches in Acapulco or Cuernavaca, so I used that network to start selling this technology and give the business a shot!

But wait, the story doesn’t end there. Customers didn’t just want the robots to clean their pools. That was just the beginning, later they wanted more from us – they wanted chemicals, equipment, accessories, services etc, so this business has been growing as a result. Now we have more customers than we could have expected and work on some of the main pools in Mexico City.

I need to say that BlackBerry has been part of that story. These devices have been so useful for my business. Thank you guys.

    15. Sergio, how does BlackBerry keep you organized with your work? (Especially since you’re one busy man!)
    16. Well, my BlackBerry and my BlackBerry PlayBook are really my main computing devices, but the BlackBerry PlayBook has sort of won me over because I can do so many things with it.

On the PlayBook, when I’m not at the office I use remote access to check inventory or create invoices. Sometimes I also access email and Docs To Go using my BlackBerry PlayBook.

I use Evernote on the PlayBook for updating the notes I take at each customer visit. This also involves taking pictures so I have a record of water clearness or turbidity, chemical parameters, etc. These notes can be shared immediately with the customers or my suppliers when there are product issues.

Of course, presentations are part of this business, too. I edit my presentations on the PlayBook using an Office app. Sometimes I display these presentations on a LCD or LED TV and use my BlackBerry smartphone as my remote control with BlackBerry Bridge. It is so cool and it looks so profesional that customers are amazed each time I do this. In fact, when I finish the presentation, they often want to take a look at the BlackBerry PlayBook and play with the remote control feature. Haha.

Check this, one of the coolest things I do on the PlayBook is placing calls through VoiP, this turns my tablet into a ‘phablet’ but also helps me reduce my phone costs as much as 40% on local calls and 80% on international calls. I do this when I’m at my customer’s facilities, coffee shops, restaurants or when I’m traveling. The phone function even works through the internet using a modem, but the voice quality isn’t always the best.

Of course, e-mail is one of the things I use most during the day. I probably split by time on e-mail between my two devices evenly.
Getting access to web sites related to the business are part of every day tasks and I mainly do this on the PlayBook.

Those are some of the areas in which BlackBerry helps me a lot.

    17. What did you think about the launch of BlackBerry 10? Did any announcement in particular stand out?
    18. More than seeing this as BlackBerry deserving another opportunity, I thought you guys did this once, why can’t you do it again? BlackBerry 10 has all everything you need to succeed. I’m so sure of that. I believe!

About announcements, yes, of course, there were some that stood out – those about the apps that customers could expect to see and use. There are so many! Congrats to your Developer Relations Team, they are doing a great job!

    19. And finally, we just have to ask: Are you prepared to handle the fame that comes with being our Fans of the Month?
    20. Hahaha, I hope to enjoy it! Bring it on!

  • BlackBerry 10 and the end of the “U-Turn” Button

As more and more of my friends get their hands on a BlackBerry Z10, I find myself referring to an earlier Inside BlackBerry Blog post – “There’s No Button like Home”- about the device’s lack of a home button. Users migrating from a BlackBerry device or competitive devices needed more information on how using BlackBerry 10 Flow keeps you moving, and BlackBerry users in particular wondered how and why they would navigate apps without the much-adored “Back” or “U-Turn” button.

    uturnbutton

Without belaboring the “how” part of using BlackBerry 10 Flow (explained in this video), I’d like to focus on why the U-turn button is no longer needed with BlackBerry 10. We frequently note that this function is due to the goal to “keep you moving forward” but what does that really mean?

    • It means that the user experience of your mobile operating system should adapt to you and not the other way around.
    • It means taking the human desire to reach higher and be more and packing it into a smartphone.
    • It means a smartphone that says “I agree with you, star-reacher. Let’s go and be more.”
    • It means knowing where you’ve been and how it impacts you, then using it to propel you beyond your expectations.
    • It means plunging fearlessly into apps and being able to peek into the correspondence that mean the most at any time, day or night.
    • It means BlackBerry 10 is more than a slogan or ad – it’s a movement, and a movement forward.

I hope this clears things up. If you have any questions about how BlackBerry 10 keeps you moving forward, shout them out in the comments.

  • BBM Video: Top 5 Things You Should Know

[ YouTube link for mobile viewing ]

Arguably, the most significant BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) innovation on BlackBerry 10 is the Video Chat feature. Built on multifaceted technology, BBM Video is intended to provide BlackBerry 10 users with a first-in-class video chat agent. As you start exploring BBM Video, keep these key points in mind to help optimize your BlackBerry 10 experience:

    1. Seamless transition between text and video. It’s extremely easy to initiate a video chat with a BBM contact. When in a text-based BBM conversation, simply tap the video icon on the chat screen to start talking face-to-face. BAM!
    2. Screen Share. In addition to being able to make audio and video calls through BBM, you can share the screen of your BlackBerry 10 device while continuing your conversation. This allows you to chat in real time about a photo album, business document or website.
    3. High quality audio. BBM Video has stereo and wide-band audio technology. This means that two people can talk at the same time without canceling each other out.
    4. Cinematic experience. You can rotate your BlackBerry 10 device while BBM video chatting. This way, you can share you surrounding in portrait or landscape mode when conversing with a contact face-to-face over BBM.
    5. Front or rear-facing cameras. When in BBM Video, you switch between the front or rear-facing cameras on your BlackBerry 10 device. Which lens is more slimming (ha!) – you pick!

Okay, now you can stop reading and start chatting. Let us know what you think about BBM Video in the comments below!

  • BlackBerry 10 Apps that Rock!

    BlackBerryRockinApps

Since I’ve been using my BlackBerry Z10 for some time now, I’ve had the chance to try out lots of new apps. While my BlackBerry Z10 is a productivity workhorse, I’m also having a lot of fun with the games, music and photo apps available in BlackBerry World. I wanted to share a few of my top apps to get everyone as excited as I am, so read below for details on apps that will truly rock your device!

For games, one of my favorites is Snake by Jan Hoffmann. The interface stays true to the game’s original build, but has the enhanced experience of the touchscreen on the BlackBerry Z10. I also like to remember my days in grade school by playing The Oregon Trail American Settler by Gameloft inc. – a game about conquering the Oregon frontier. While the interface on the BlackBerry Z10 is slick, it’s still challenging to cross rivers to take care of your oxen. And when you want to stay inside on a rainy day, try WordHero, a great cross-word puzzle app by Sven Studios.

When it comes to music, there are tons of options for finding your favorite artists and songs. You can download full albums or songs directly from BlackBerry World or stream music through free apps like Songza by Songza Media, Inc., a must for those who love curated playlists. You can also use Slacker Radio by Slacker Inc. for access to a great radio stations from across the globe.

You know I like to take photos, as evidenced by the many appearances of my dog George on Twitter and here on the Inside BlackBerry Blog. Now, my BlackBerry Z10 has some great native photo editing capabilities, but I also like using Photo Studio PRO by KVADGroup. I love the filters like “Old School” and “blur” (plus more than 100 other options), frames, and even making collages. And because every artist needs an audience, I’ve used BBM Integration to share my masterpieces with my social networks.

These are just a few of my favorite BlackBerry Z10 apps. Based on what you’ve seen so far, what are your favorites? And remember, you can create your own favorite app for BlackBerry 10 using the BlackBerry App Generator!

  • Where’s your favorite Wi-Fi in the City?

    which wifi_image

As you probably have guessed, I watch my data usage closely. Because of that, I take any chance I can to jump on Wi-Fi while still staying secure (WPA2, FTW!). I’ve even gotten in the habit of downloading larger apps over my home Wi-Fi to avoid the data hit. It’s a great way to save data use, but let’s face it, not all Wi-Fi is created equal. So what are some of your favorite Wi-Fi spots that aren’t at home? I’d like to share a few of mine, and then open the comments up to hear from you.

    • Coffee Shops: Espresso, Internet, a diverse group of people…does it get any better? Whether relaxing at a chain or taking advantage of the local brew, I’m definitely a fan of the one-two punch of java and browsing.
    • Libraries: Remember libraries? Well, many of them offer Wi-Fi now, and they are much quieter than a coffee shop, so hang here if you’re diving into research. (Probably not a good place for Plants vs. Zombies.)
    • Restaurants: Like a coffee shop, they’re going to want you to buy something, but with many fast-food places offering free Wi-Fi, it’s a small price to pay. Most of the Wi-Fi is pretty speedy as well, so you can download an app before you finish your cheeseburger.

I’m sure there are plenty of other hotspot hot spots in your neighborhood; feel free to add to this list by sharing your favorite places in the comments below.

  • How HTML5 Apps Can Match a Native Experience

I was recently talking with a friend—one who’s not altogether tech-savvy—and he asked what makes BlackBerry 10 a different experience from other mobile devices. I talked about many of the new features such as BlackBerry Flow and BlackBerry Hub, and I also mentioned better navigation and the smoothness and power of the HTML5 support built into the BlackBerry 10 operating system. At that, he stopped me and asked, “I can already use a ton of apps on my smartphone. Can HTML5 make mobile apps work faster?”

What a great question! The best way I can answer this question is by example. For instance, if you’ve ever been prompted to allow a game or quiz access or post to your Facebook page, you’ve most likely just engaged a Facebook (HTML-based) app. Even signing into your Facebook or Twitter profile from another website using OpenID or OAuth engages a web app of sorts.

The HTML5 support built into BlackBerry 10 is designed to enable web apps to function faster and smoother. It’s this tight integration that allows web apps to look and feel like native apps, while leaving things like processor and memory on the device and to support native apps. So running HTML5 apps on your BlackBerry 10 device will indeed make the mobile apps run faster, while not making the native (apps) restless.
