  • BlackBerry Q10: Top 5 Things You Should Know

Top 5 things about the BlackBerry Q10

The BlackBerry Q10 is the first BlackBerry 10 smartphone to feature a classic BlackBerry hardware physical keyboard. This device combines the iconic BlackBerry keyboard and the power of the BlackBerry 10 platform to bring you what we consider the best smartphone with a physical QWERTY keyboard on the market. Since I previously showed you five highlights of the BlackBerry Z10, I wanted to share five things you need to know about the BlackBerry Q10 experience.

    1. The keyboard is bigger and better. The BlackBerry Q10 features a straight keyboard design, and is wider than earlier BlackBerry smartphones. The metal frets between the keys are also bigger, offering a more visual appeal while helping to eliminate errors while typing on the go.
    2. The BlackBerry Q10 has the largest battery of any BlackBerry smartphone, ever. The BlackBerry Q10 battery is 2100 mAh in size, which means, well, you can talk, work and play nearly all day on a single charge.
    3. Better shortcuts with Touch and Go. This time-saving feature is essentially a shortcut that allows you to send messages faster than ever before. All you have to do is start typing an action like “email” or “BBM,” then a name, and you can quickly take action. Message sent. BOOM!
    4. The design is meticulous, light and durable. The back plate on the BlackBerry Q10 is made of a unique glass-weave material that is lighter and stronger than plastic. The device is surrounded by a machined stainless steel frame with a durable black coating, which is designed to prevent the edges from chipping and keeps your BlackBerry Q10 looking good.
    5. The BlackBerry Q10 is a BlackBerry 10 device, and it performs like one. The BlackBerry Q10 was designed to offer amazing performance available on BlackBerry 10 devices like the BlackBerry Z10. In terms of features and functionality, it runs on the same BlackBerry 10 platform, it can run the same apps, and has a removable back plate for easily replacing the battery or swapping your SIM card.

We’ve told you about the BlackBerry Z10 and the BlackBerry Q10; now choosing which BlackBerry 10 device is up to you. Remember to Be Bold and Vote for your choice, and share your thoughts in the comments below.

  • What’s Eating Your Data Plan?

    BlackBerry data plan

We all love our mobile devices — we bring them with us everywhere from the boardroom to the bathroom. We live, eat, and sleep next to our devices. They are our window to the world – a window we pay to keep open every month. According to a Harris Interactive study published on Time’s Moneyland blog that compares mobile plans to grocery shopping, 21 percent of respondents said they spend more on mobile phone bills every month than they do on groceries! I don’t know about that personally, but what I do know is that most of us would love to be able to do as much as possible on our mobile devices while using less data. Let’s look at a few ways we can make this happen with a few tips for using data more efficiently:

    • Learn to Love Wi-Fi: When we’re on the go, sometimes you just have to jump online using your data plan. The rest of the time, we might be within range of a Wi-Fi hotspot. The Wi-Fi hotspot credentials for work, home, and a couple of local coffee shops are all saved in my BlackBerry Z10 for connecting when I’m there. I also take advantage of these Wi-Fi hotspots when downloading new apps, music, videos or large documents.
    • Know Thy Apps: While we’re talking about apps, a good habit to get into is to know which apps are always running while your device is turned on. Apps that are providing you with real-time notifications can usually be adjusted to update less frequently. Fewer “pings” for new updates equals less data use.
    • Beware the Giant Upload: Those high-resolution pictures you took of your baby going down the slide really should go on Facebook, but remember if you’re on a limited data plan, every megabyte (MB) counts. Wi-Fi is your friend; be aware of what you’re uploading over your mobile network. You can save data by uploading photos when within Wi-Fi range.
    • Use What’s Free: While it still requires you to have a data plan, using BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) to send a message instead of an email or using a messaging app may help you use less data every month. Depending on the size of the messages and the size of your data plan, you could see some serious savings over the course of several hundred BBM messages.

What are some of the ways you use to save money on your BlackBerry smartphone data plan every month? Do you spend more on your mobile phone bill than groceries? Share your thoughts in the comments.

  • The Global BlackBerry 10 Launch: Highlights and a Look Back

    Global BlackBerry 10 launch

It has been just over a week since we launched BlackBerry 10 on January 30th. The company has a new name, introduced two new products in the BlackBerry Z10 and BlackBerry Q10, and engaged eager fans all across the globe with six events being simultaneously held in New York City, Johannesburg, Toronto, Paris, London and Dubai. This was no easy feat, but it went off without a hitch.

For those of you who weren’t able to make it out to one of the events or watch the live feed of the BlackBerry 10 launch, we’ve gathered some of the best footage from each event to share with you. Have a look at the video below to see all the action.

[ YouTube link for mobile viewing ]

Looking back on the global launch event, my favorite moment was getting the chance to meet and talk with all the people who were getting to see BlackBerry 10 for the first time. They were excited to get their hands on the BlackBerry Z10, and were impressed by many of the new features on the BlackBerry 10 platform. Their enthusiasm made all the hard work building up to launch worth it.

Our new name, BlackBerry, comes with a new vision, a new attitude and new energy. We’re putting it all to good use as we introduce the BlackBerry Z10 and BlackBerry Q10 to new markets and hold events to meet with developers, business partners and customers all around the world. We’re not stopping now; January 30th was just the beginning.

Team BlackBerry, we’ve shared some of our favorite moments from the BlackBerry 10 launch – I’d love to see you do the same. Let us know what your favorite moments were and what you’re looking forward to with BlackBerry 10.

  • BlackBerry Fans Challenge the Streets of NYC with BlackBerry 10

During the BlackBerry 10 launch event, some of our biggest fans were given the opportunity to experience the BlackBerry Z10 in a real-world demonstration through the streets of New York City. The group visited a series of landmarks where they completed various tasks on their BlackBerry 10 smartphones focusing on the new features.

Some of the challenges included capturing a mid-air jump with BlackBerry Time Shift, creating a work of art with the sleek new BlackBerry Picture Editor, and capturing the memories of the day using the incredible BlackBerry Story Maker app.

In true Team BlackBerry form, everyone successfully completed the challenge, and had a blast doing so! But don’t take our word for it – check out a recap of the day:

[ YouTube link for mobile viewing ]

We took the challenge one step further with the BlackBerry Story Maker films and offered a prize for the best video. We took a long hard look at all the groups’ BlackBerry Story Maker videos from the day, and while it wasn’t an easy decision, check out the winning video and get a glimpse of what’s possible with BlackBerry Story Maker:

  • Our First 5 BlackBerry 10 Apps

UPDATE — Note that BlackBerry Travel has not yet launched for BlackBerry 10 and the post did not intend to imply that it had. Simply an app the author would like to use when it does launch. ED.

With BlackBerry 10 now available in Canada and other locations around the world, Melanie and I wanted to share the first five apps we downloaded on our new BlackBerry Z10 smartphones. Hopefully the below says a bit about our personality – and a lot about how we use our BlackBerry 10 devices.

    Donny’s Top 5 Apps

World of Goo by 2D BOY: This is a simple yet challenging puzzle game. It’s fun to play offline when you have a few minutes to stretch your mind muscle as you work your way through various levels and worlds.

theScore (Score Mobile) by the Score, Inc.: If you’re a sports nut like me you definitely need to keep tabs on all your favorite teams. With theScore you can track and follow your teams and players. You can even have alerts pushed to you during major events so you’ll never miss out on that game-winning goal.

Run In Crowd by Ursine Paw: This is one of my favorite games on my BlackBerry PlayBook and I’m happy to say that it’s also available for BlackBerry 10. I’m very proud to say that when I first downloaded this I was ranked in the top 10!

Songza by Songza Media, Inc.: Music lovers will love this app. It knows what time of day it is and all you have to do is pick what type of activity you’re doing, what mood you’re in, and Songza will be your musical concierge, creating a playlist for your listening pleasure.

NYTimes for BlackBerry 10 by The New York Times: There are many news apps available for BlackBerry 10, but I definitely have a soft spot for this one. I got to see a preview of it when I attended the New York Times DealBook Conference late last year, and I must say it is a great source for all my news.

    Mel’s Top 5 Apps

BlackBerry Messenger (BBM): Everybody loves BlackBerry Messenger, or BBM, but it’s truly the one app I can’t live without. It’s my go-to method of communicating with my friends and family. Now with BBM Voice and BBM Video Chat, I can talk or video chat with anyone I’m connected to at the drop of a hat!

foursquare by foursquare: Loving all things social media, foursqure is really one the of many social apps I use daily. Checking in on foursquare is great, but what I like most about the app are the tips and deals at each location. It’s a great way to learn about the places you go to.

BlackBerry Travel: I haven’t yet had the opportunity to use the BlackBerry Travel app, but I can’t wait! It’s going to make my life so much easier. Having all your travel details in one spot could make travelling so much more enjoyable. I’ve had issues with losing travel documents before, so I never travel again without BlackBerry Travel!

Angry Birds Star Wars by Rovio Entertainment ltd: I have to admit, I am new to the Angry Birds phenomenon. I had never tried it or even paid any attention to the hype. However, I LOVE Star Wars! When I saw the graphics and the light sabers the angry birds use, I just had to try it. I’m hooked!

AirHorn by Madscientist’s Laboratory: One word: HILARIOUS! Who hasn’t wanted to sound off an air horn in a quiet room, office, elevator? You’ve got to give this one a try.

There you go: two people, ten apps – one post. Be sure to check out our favorite apps for BlackBerry 10 and share yours in the comments below.

  • How it’s Made: Marmalade Helping Developers Bring Games to BlackBerry 10

Here at the BlackBerry Jam Europe conference, I’ve had the chance to talk to many developers and partners who are bringing their games and apps to BlackBerry 10. One of the partners that helps them do this in a simple way is Marmalade.

I met with Nick from the Marmalade team for a quick demo on how their product is helping to create fun apps that look and feel amazing. Check out how he’s able to start building an app and have it running on BlackBerry 10 in minutes. Let’s have a look:

[ YouTube link for mobile viewing ]

Marmalade has been helping developers at BlackBerry Jam Europe to learn how easy it is to create apps for BlackBerry 10 so that when you head to BlackBerry World, you’ll have a ton of apps and games to choose from. Some of your favorite games for the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet are already built using Marmalade, and many will soon be available (if they aren’t already) on BlackBerry 10 devices. Let us know what you think in the comments below.

  • BlackBerry Q10 Keyboard shortcut Demo at BlackBerry Jam Europe

Onstage here at BlackBerry Jam Europe, Vivek demoed what he’s calling Touch and Go on the BlackBerry Q10. Basically, it is a shortcut designed specifically for the physical keyboard device, where you just start typing an action, then a name, and you can quickly take action.

Touch and Go is a productivity feature in line with the other BlackBerry 10 features – like peek and BlackBerry Flow – that are designed to keep you moving quickly through your information, taking action along the way as needed.

Have a look at this quick video to see the Touch and Go feature in action:

[ YouTube link for mobile viewing ]

The example Vivek gave was for an email. He just started typing “email” then the contact info, but you could do this for Facebook, Twitter or even BBM. Take this for example: “BBM – Alex K. – What’s the best thing you’ve seen at BlackBerry Jam Europe so far?”

Let us know what you think about this feature and the other demos of the BlackBerry Q10 from last week at the global BlackBerry 10 launch.

  • BlackBerry Z10: Top 5 things you should know

5 things to know about the BlackBerry Z10

The BlackBerry Z10 is a brand new device working in a modern mobile ecosystem. When introduced to the world last week, we showed you many of the BlackBerry Z10’s highlights. While we’ve shared a lot of what the BlackBerry Z10 has to offer, here are the five things you need to know about the Blackberry Z10 experience.

    1. Revolution over evolution. As you begin to use your BlackBerry Z10, try to think of it as the first smartphone you’ve ever set eyes (or thumbs) on. We designed the BlackBerry 10 OS completely from scratch to be unlike anything else. After a few minutes of practice you’ll appreciate how the BlackBerry Flow navigation keeps you moving forward.
    2. BlackBerry Balance allows you to be “BYOE”. That’s Bring Your Own Everything, because with BlackBerry Balance baked into the BlackBerry Z10, you can keep work and personal data completely separate. So if your company has a BYOD, or Bring your Own Device program, you can bring your BlackBerry Z10 to work without fear of losing personal contacts or data. Likewise, Balance keeps your work contacts and data separate and secure from your personal information.
    3. BlackBerry World goes to Hollywood. Your BlackBerry Z10 goes even further by being a multimedia machine while you’re on the go. Picture the BlackBerry Z10 as a movie and music player compact enough to take everywhere. Not only that, BlackBerry Story Maker can put you in the director’s chair.
    4. It’s Raining Apps. In addition to the baked-in features like BlackBerry Remember and BlackBerry Picture Editor, BlackBerry World also gives you access to the top games, productivity apps, utilities, and social apps. We continue to work with developers to grow BlackBerry World every day.
    5. BlackBerry 10 is built for your security. Having tons of apps and features is great, but it’s important to also feel secure in what you’re doing on your device. BlackBerry 10 received its FIPS 140-2 Security Certification prior to its official unveiling, and to date, no other mobile solution has been awarded the same level and quantity of security accreditations. To put it simply: The BlackBerry Z10 helps keep the bad guys out of your device.

Many users are just discovering their BlackBerry Z10 devices, and still many more are looking forward to the BlackBerry Q10 physical keyboard device (I’ll be bringing you five things to know on the BlackBerry Q10 soon!). Whichever device you choose, we hope these five thoughts get you rolling.

What are your initial thoughts on the BlackBerry Z10? If you’re currently using the device, tell us about your experience in the comments!

  • Greetings from BlackBerry Jam Europe

    BlackBerry Jam Europe

This week the Inside BlackBerry Blog team is attending the BlackBerry Jam Europe conference to bring you all of the action from Amsterdam. BlackBerry 10 has officially launched with a ton of great apps, and thanks to developers, more and more apps will be coming to BlackBerry 10 every day. This week we’ll be bringing demos and interviews from the great people making apps and games for BlackBerry 10.

It is no secret we have an amazing developer community around the world that has already created more than 70,000 apps for the launch of BlackBerry 10 – the most apps on any first-generation mobile platform at launch. What this means for you is that a ton of BlackBerry 10 apps and games are available for you in BlackBerry World so you can get the most out of your new BlackBerry Z10 or BlackBerry Q10 when you pick it up.

As a thank-you, Alec Saunders, VP, Developer Relations and Ecosystems, introduced an ultra-exclusive red Limited Edition BlackBerry Z10. This is only available to developers, so if you see someone with it, be sure to ask them which app they developed and thank them for it!

    Limited Edition BlackBerry Z10

We also have an exclusive look at a never-before-seen feature that Vivek showed off onstage at BlackBerry Jam Europe with his new BlackBerry Q10. We’ll be bringing that video to you later, so stay tuned.

  • Which BlackBerry 10 is Right for Me? Be Bold and Vote

    BlackBerry Z10 or BlackBerry Q10?

You’re so close to getting a BlackBerry 10 device, you can taste it. You’ve seen videos of new features such as BBM Video Chat on BlackBerry Messenger and the new BlackBerry Picture Editor for the BlackBerry 10 Camera, and you want your new BlackBerry 10 smartphone NOW. But I’ve got just one question for you: Are you more interested in the BlackBerry Q10 hardware physical keyboard or the BlackBerry Z10 touchscreen keyboard?

For those who have their minds made up already, I want your vote. Are you pulling for the BlackBerry 10 with a physical keyboard, or have you been wooed by the predictive text touch keyboard? It’s okay if you haven’t decided yet; one size doesn’t fit all, and neither does one BlackBerry smartphone form factor. Be Bold and Vote:

Thanks for your vote! Also, don’t forget to share your thoughts in the comments below on which choice you made and why.

  • BlackBerry 10 Interview: ooVoo’s Jay Samit

With BlackBerry 10 having just officially launched, we’ve already got some very exciting app partners onboard. Last week we told you about the 70,000 apps available for BlackBerry 10 in BlackBerry World, including thousands of top apps. One of these apps I’m most excited about is ooVoo, an app that lets you video chat with up to 12 of your friends.

At the BlackBerry 10 global launch event, I caught up with Jay Samit from ooVoo to talk about what brought ooVoo to BlackBerry 10 and what he’s most excited for about the new BlackBerry devices.

[ YouTube link for mobile viewing ]

Definitely sounds like some very exciting things on the horizon for BlackBerry 10 customers. The Inside BlackBerry Blog team is in Amsterdam this week at BlackBerry Jam Europe to bring you all the action and to show off more of the awesome apps you can expect on BlackBerry 10.

  • BlackBerry 10′s Big Game Ad

    BlackBerry Z10 commercial

    Whaaat is going on here?

The new BlackBerry Z10 cannot set you on fire, give you elephant legs, cause you to disappear into a cloud of rainbow smoke or turn a speeding truck into harmless rubber duckies. But with only 30 seconds, on the world’s largest advertising stage it’s quicker to show you what it can’t do. In a fun and creative one-time spot that aired this Sunday, BlackBerry introduced the new BlackBerry Z10.

The fast and elegant BlackBerry 10 device symbolizes a restart for the company, which has completely re-designed, re-engineered, and re-invented its products and its brand. BlackBerry 10 features many advances that are designed to make it stand out. With communication and agility at its core, BlackBerry 10 is for people who need to Keep Moving, which is the new tagline and mantra for the company.

For the big game, rather than run an ad that is expected for the tech category – one that showcases the features of the product – we decided to have fun and challenge the status quo. We knew that for this event, it was important to spark a conversation about BlackBerry 10 and to make people curious enough to find out more. We’ve got the great benefit of having one of the largest social networks in the world with 30 million fans on Facebook and Twitter, and we wanted to drive people both there and to our website to discover what makes BlackBerry 10 stand out.

Frank Boulben sat down with the Inside BlackBerry Blog crew to talk about the commercial:

[ YouTube link for mobile viewing ]

We’re four days after the launch of BlackBerry 10 – our largest product introduction ever. The response to the product has been tremendous and we’re building off that momentum on the largest advertising stage of the year.

Don’t forget to check out BlackBerry.com to see what BlackBerry 10 can do.

  • BlackBerry 10 Interview: T.A. McCann on the New BBM Video Chat and Screenshare

BlackBerry 10 is all about communication and keeping you moving when you’re on the go. The new BlackBerry Z10 and BlackBerry Q10 smartphones feature amazing and innovative technology that allows you to share your screen with your BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) contacts using BlackBerry 10. This was demoed for the first time at the BlackBerry 10 launch event, and it was undeniably a crowd pleaser.

To find out more about about this exciting news and the future of BBM, I met with T.A. McCann, VP, BBM and Social Communities of BlackBerry at the BlackBerry 10 launch event. He also let me know what his favorite sleeper feature in BlackBerry 10 is. Curious? Watch the interview here to find out.

[ YouTube link for mobile viewing ]

Big thanks to T.A. for the interview – I’m sure Matthew and the browser team appreciate the shoutout. What’s your favorite BlackBerry 10 sleeper feature?

  • BlackBerry 10 Interview: Catching up with Matthew from the Browser Team

At the BlackBerry 10 launch event, I had the opportunity to catch up with some of the people that have been working hard to create BlackBerry 10. One of my favorite new features is the browser on the BlackBerry Z10. It is fast and brings me the information I’m looking when I need it on the go. I caught up with Matthew Staikos from the browser team to learn even more about this great browser.

[ YouTube link for mobile version ]

So there’s some great highlights of the new BlackBerry 10 browser – and isn’t it cool that Matthew also loves BlackBerry Remember? What do you love most about BlackBerry 10?
