  • avacado mayo?

does anyone have a recipe for this?

i tried it at a restaurant a while ago, with sweet potato fries, and it was DIVINE. i think it had a hint of chipotle.

i could certainly just play around…but if anyone has a recipe, i would really appreciate it!

funny, i despise mayo on it’s own, but i love it flavoured and mixed with other things…

  • does anyone use Final Cut?

i’m wondering if anyone here uses Final Cut (Express or Pro) as their video editing software.

i use it for work (i make short news videos/features for our website) but am pretty much self taught.

i have a few questions that i can’t seem to find the answers to…

let me know if you have experience with this! thanks!

  • at what point do you make a change to your I:C?

normally, if i see a trend for three days (high or low) then i make a change to my I:C.

but, with all the craziness of pregnancy and hormones, etc., i’m doubting myself a little. why? because the past week or so my numbers have been completely erratic— lows and some highs with no discernible patterns and no discernible reason.

but i’ve been high after breakfast three days in a row now (a pattern, in my opinion), with 1 hr pp readings of 8 (144), 7.4 (133) and 9.7 (175)!!!! so i’m thinking of doing a 1:12 instead of a 1:14 ratio. before that, my 1 hr pps at breakfast were always in the 4s (70s/80s) and i coasted nicely into the pre-lunch reading.

    any thoughts?

  • kids say the darndest things…

this is too hilarious not to share.

my 2.5 year old son was looking up at my dad, and looked up at his nose. he asked my dad "Dampa, why do you have a beard in your nose?"

i’m still laughing out loud! my dad was in stitches!

    kids are hysterical! 😀

  • feeling sorry for myself

    i know, i’m lame.

so, it was my birthday thursday. the big 3-5.

i told hubby that i didn’t want a big deal made out of it…but that may have backfired on me. instead, he pretty much just ignored it. so i’m feeling sort of…sad.

he usually gets home from work around 8 p.m. BUT that day was in training and got home at the same time as me, around 6 p.m. so, the rare opportunity was there for a "family" dinner. but he had nothing planned and didn’t ask if i wanted anything special or to do anything special, and when he got home asked me "what’s for dinner?" when i answered, "i haven’t thought about it" he said, "well i guess we can check the freezer."

    hmmm.

i did get a "happy birthday, by the way", but no cake, no gesture, NOTHING. there is a gift from him, but i haven’t opened it yet. i’ll open it sunday, when my parents are having us over for dinner for my birthday. i just didn’t feel like it was meaningful the other night…

i guess i was just figuring that since he was off early, he would have planned SOMETHING, even if that meant getting take out (which is what we ended up doing, and eating at 9 p.m….no fun). even my 2.5 year old, the evening before, made a playdoh cake all by himself and came out and sang happy birthday to me (imagine my shock and my delight!).

hubby didn’t ask if i wanted to do anything this weekend. even my folks asked me if we needed a sitter…if we had anything planned, dinner…movie…anything, and they were surprised when i said no.

ok. that’s enough. that’s my rant. just feels better to get it off my chest. my old, bitter chest.

  • T1 screening for relatives of T1…thoughts?

what do you think about this? we are considering having my son tested, but i’m nervous…

thoughts? opinions? has anyone done this sort of thing?

TYPE 1 DIABETES NATURAL HISTORY STUDY UNDERWAY
in collaboration with The Hospital for Sick Children (Toronto)

The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) has teamed up with the Diabetes Education Centre at The William Osler Health Centre in Brampton to explore whether relatives of people with Type 1 Diabetes are at risk for developing the disease.

SickKids is part of an international network called TrialNet which is dedicated to the study, prevention and early treatment of type 1 diabetes. TrialNet screening involves a simple blood test for the presence of diabetes-related antibodies that may appear years before Type 1 Diabetes develops. First-degree blood relatives (siblings, children of parents) who are one to 45 years of age as well as second-degree blood relatives (cousins, uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, grandparents or half-siblings) who are one to 20 years of age may be screened to determine their risk of developing Type 1 Diabetes.

The Natural History study is being done to learn more about what causes Type 1 Diabetes and to better define predictors of the disease process. Relatives of those afflicted with Type 1 Diabetes have about a 3 to 4 percent chance of testing positive for antibodies associated with diabetes. Results will be available within a 4 to 6 week period.

  • quick and dirty cauli cakes

just experimented…and now i can’t wait for dinner tonight! here’s what i did:

grated cauliflower (i used half of a LARGE head) marinated in oil and salt in the fridge overnight.
beat together an egg, two tbsp sour cream, salt/pepper (to taste). add 1/4 cup grated cheese.
    fry bacon and diced onions.
add onions, and crumbled bacon to egg mix, add cooked cauli (wrung out first).
make into smallish patties, fry in bacon fat. (you could fry first to brown, then bake, but i was just testing out on lunch hour…)

they are awesome. they crumble a bit, but nonetheless taste phenomenal. i added a little dollop of sour cream on top. delish!

  • anyone have a GOOD recipe for cauliflower cakes?

    i could wing it…

but i’m wondering if anyone has a recipe they love.

i’m cooking salmon tonight, and pre-D would make potato cakes with salmon. i was hoping to make something similar with cauliflower (but my potato recipe calls for flour, bisquick…all the bad things in life;) )

i like bacon and onions in mine, and then to brown the cakes in the bacon fat and bake them in the oven.
