This is Gina. ROAD TRIP! YAY! First Lady Obama is heading to Mexico today for her very first solo visit abroad. So let’s start the betting now. How many school children will be hugged on this visit? I’m going to go with a dozen. Here is the schedule.
Tuesday, April 13 – First Lady Michelle Obama will arrive at Benito Juarez International Airport in Mexico City.
Wednesday, April 14 – Mrs. Obama will start her day by traveling to Los Pinos – the residence of President Calderón and Mrs. Zavala – where she will meet privately with Mrs. Zavala.
Upon conclusion of her visit at Los Pinos, Mrs. Obama will accept Mrs. Zavala’s invitation to tour the Museo Nacional de Antropologia (National Museum of Anthropology). The museum is a centerpiece of Mexican culture and history housing the largest collection of ancient Mexican pieces in the world.
Then Mrs. Obama will visit with students and teachers at Escuela Siete de Enero, a public elementary school that serves local low-income students ages 6-12. The school also participates in a mentoring program with the American School Foundation (ASF), an academically rigorous, international, university preparatory school offering students from diverse backgrounds an American independent education, in Mexico City.
Mrs. Obama will then travel to the Universidad Iberoamericana, a multidisciplinary institution serving over 11,000 students including 800 graduate students, to address invited university and high school students from in and around Mexico City. Mrs. Zavala will attend Mrs. Obama’s address as a guest of honor.
In the evening, Mrs. Obama will return to Los Pinos to attend a reception with women leaders organized by Mrs. Zavala. Following the reception, Mrs. Obama will have dinner hosted by Mexican President Felipe Calderón and Mrs. Zavala.
Thursday, April 15 – Mrs. Obama will begin her day by thanking United States Embassy employees and their families.
ThenMrs. Obama will host a group of young leaders at La Hacienda de los Morales, an event center with a rich history dating back to the 16th century, for a breakfast roundtable discussion. Mrs. Obama will ask these men and women about their experiences and encourage them to continue their leadership in the community.
Upon conclusion of the roundtable breakfast, Mrs. Obama will depart Mexico City.
Thursday, April 15 – On the return trip from Mexico, the First Lady will stop in San Diego, California, for a Let’s Move! event.
This is Gina. I don’t know if this is a good thing or a bad thing, but Nia Malika Henderson and Robin Givhan now work for the same news organization, the Washington Post. I realize that many Michelle Obama Watch readers loath that I mention our favorite East Wing gadflies in the same post, but this had to be done. We monitor the media’s coverage of the First Lady and these two for some reason wrote an incessant amount about First Lady Obama.
Nia will focus her reporting on the First Family, and mine [more like plant land mines ] the intersection of politics and culture in Washington. What is going on in this town that is new and different since the Obama administration arrived? What are the key friendships that help explain the Obamas’ lives in the federal city? Nia will explore political relationships, social Washington, and the connections between those in power and those who seek it,” said a note from Kevin Merida, the Post’s national editor, and Marilyn Thompson, politics and government editor. [in other words she’s going to be the First Family’s Official Gossip Columnist]
“We expect her to have a strong presence online, but also in print, and to coordinate closely with Robin Givhan [the horror!], Style’s extraordinary columnist and observer of Michelle Obama and the East Wing.[is that what they call it?] Journalisms.
From Givhan’s mean spirited hit jobs to Henderson perpetual public handwringing about the First Lady’s poll numbers. The dynamic duo are now free to rampage through the East Wing hand in hand. Deliver us all! This is like Darth Vador hooking up with the Romulans. Its like the Washington Post is plotting to whip up the bitterest batch of journalistic hateraid in history. All is lost. Politico, Henderson’s former employer lost its ONLY BLACK REPORTER. Now that’s downright SHAMEFUL considering they are in Washington, DC. They at least should have had a spare Black person on hand in case Nia left.
We will find someway to cope with this wretched turn of events.

This is Gina. Well I guess this is time from one of those public service announcement and Black culture encyclopedia entries that I occasionally do on this blog.
One of the reasons why First Lady Michelle Obama totally rocks is that no matter how idiotic and unhinged her critic become, she keeps going with dignity and grace and class. The image she’s cultivated since entering the White House is a glaring indictment of he most vitriolic critics. After all, who can quarrel with someone who hugs every child in sight, plays soccer with them, and reads (entirely too long) children’s stories. Furthermore, her children appear to be well adjusted, happy, and sane. Which is more than I can say for the folks grabbing hold of the latest “Barack Obama was born in Kenya” meme.
Apparently when First lady Obama was speaking at the 2008 Democratic National Convention she discussed the fact that she and the president underwent HIV testing to help destroy stigmas related to the disease. During such she referred to Kenya as the President’s “Home Country.” Now someone with too much time on their hands has taken that clip out of context and offered it as evidence that President Obama was not born in the United States of America.
Rush Limbaugh repeated this audio on his show recently, just as he “mentioned” the Whitey Tape Rumors:
Audio of Michelle Obama has surfaced. Audio from 2008, August of that year in Denver at a luncheon for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender delegates to the Democrat National Convention. There are others? Anyway, here is a portion of what she said, and this is causing quite a sir out there.
MICHELLE: Barack has led by example. When we took our trip to Africa and visited his home country in Kenya, we took a public HIV test for the very point of showing folks in Kenya that there is nothing to be embarrassed about in getting tested, and we did it as a couple. Rush Limbaugh
First of all, MANY people who can trace their family’s heritage to other countries like to feel as if they have a connection to that country. If you are a Black person you are EXTREMELY lucky if you can trace your heritage back across the Atlantic. Due to the slave trade many people have been denied that opportunity. In my experience as a Black person, Black people love to view Africa as “the motherland,” although they tend to over simplify the geography and think of the continent as one big monolithic country. Some also like to say where “our people” are from. I’m sure ethnic White people who have connections to their relatives in Europe had some similar phenomenon, but I can only speak of my experience. I routinely say “my people are from Louisiana.” Though both my parents were born and raised in Texas. But every summer we went back to see “our people” across the state line.
So a sane person might conclude that when Michelle Obama said “home country” she was referring to the fact that President Obama has a LEGITIMATE connection to Kenya. His Father, and all of this Father’s relatives are there. His half siblings, aunts, uncles, grandparents, its “a home” to him. Where his roots are and that has NOTHING to do with what jurisdiction he was born in.
At some point we have to decide that an election is over. There have been lawsuits and court challenges and document inquiries. Once again, the Judicial Branch has basically indicated that it will not take up the charge that the President is not a natural born citizen. So the only reason for this continued “birther” meme is to undermine the legitimacy of the Obama Presidency its self as a political strategy. The problem is that an attack on the presidency does far more damage than attacks on whatever administration is in control of it. Its like jack hammering the foundation of a house because you don’t like the paint… you can change the paint in 4 years, if you jack up the foundation, you’re stuck with the damage to the structure of the house forever.
I’m sick of Both Sides
Let me also add that if John McCain had won the presidency, I have no doubt that elements on the left would have made and issue out of the fact that he was born in the Panama Canal Zone and not the continental US. Both political extremes are absurd and get on my dayum nerves. We had an election. Just like we’ll have an election in 2012, 2016, 2020, and 2024. The “mainstream media” if such a thing exists anymore needs to seriously consider the health of our republic if the political opposition is CONSTANTLY attempting to undermine the legitimacy of election outcomes.
You can brush it off as a joke, but ever since Bill Clinton won by a plurality in 1992 the opposition party’s supporters have sought to countermand the decisions of the people of the 50 states. First they said a plurality wasn’t’ a mandate. Then after his reelection, we spent millions of taxpayers dollars impeaching him for having sex with an intern and LYING ABOUT IT- as if disbarment and civil lawsuits, and the release of the embarrassing GRAPHIC details of his escapades becoming public weren’t enough.
Then there was 2000’s “hanging chad” election of George W. Bush. We’re a democracy with three branches of government, the judicial branch made a decision that impacted the outcome of the Presidential Election.At the end of the day, the election shouldn’t have been that close in the first dad gum place and Al Gore shouldn’t have placed himself in the position of having the Supreme Court do a judicial coin flip. If people truly felt that the decision was illegitimate, then they should have rioted in the streets. If people truly hated the Electoral College system then they should have amended Article II of the Constitution. I still remember the day that the Congressional Black Caucus Sought to Challenge the results of the 2000 election and all they needed to continue fighting was a single US Senator to join them. NONE, including Al Gore would do so. He rolled and went off to make his millions- ignoring serious allegations of the suppression of African American votes in Ohio and Florida. Yet that didn’t stop the Democratic fringe from trying to push the illegitimacy of the first Bush term.
At the end of the day, we have to have “A” President. We can’t keep going in this political death spiral where no election result is valid. Its one thing to vigorously fight an Administration’s agenda on every front, but questioning the legitimacy of the presidency itself might make you feel good, but you’re still subject to the decisions that the Administration makes while further eroding the legitimacy of the office and looking like fools.
This pattern has also spread down to lower offices where the meme of “Vote Stealing” has taken hold I has to make you wonder what will happen when these individuals from both sides get what they want. . . the ability of the judicial branch to reverse the decision of the electorate.
And what happens if either of these sides ever gets what it wants and the Supreme Court removes a sitting President? I predict total and complete anarchy. And don’t mention Nixon, he got out before it came to that.
Barack Obama is the President of the United States. If you don’t like that, there will be an election on the second Tuesday of November in the year 2012.

In defense of Malia, Horton Hatches an Egg was an extremely long story. I checked out when Horton got captured and sold to the circus and then got into a custody battle with a mama bird. I kid you not Horton had some serious legal issues in that children’s story. Later on the crowd perked up when the wiggles started performing. At least I think it was the Wiggles. No one appeared to be having more fun than First Lady Michelle Obama.

When I checked out the CNN feed First lady Michelle Obama was reading a book about an elephant and an egg. Malia was sitting beside the First Lady and Sasha was sittingin on the platform at her feet. I apparently have a short attention span because I didn’t last past the part about Horton being captured by hunters and sold to a circus. Kinda sad about poor Horton.

President Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, daughters Melia and Sasha and Mrs. Marian Robinson, mother of Mrs. Obama, attended 11 a.m. Easter services at the Allen Chapel, African Methodist Episcopal Church, in Southeast Washington’s Ward 8.
The motorcade left the North Portico at 10:45 a.m. (The South Lawn was set up for the Monday Easter Egg Roll), rolled down 15th Street, past the Tidal Basis where throngs were examining the faded cherry blossoms, to the church at 2498 Alabama Av. SE. The Church’s subtitle is “The Cathedral of Southeast.’’
The overflow crowd of congregants was standing, clapping and singing “Alleilua’’ when the first family entered via a side door at 11:05 a.m. and walked along the edge of the sanctuary to sit far stage right in the second pew, setting off applause, cheers and cell-phone cameras. The altar was flanked by the American flag, in front of the Obama’s pew, and the Episcopal Church’s flag on stage left.
The pool was positioned at the back of the church, 20 pews behind the Obama family. Ten badged ushers in dark suits and bowties and white gloves lined the two aisles.
A 50-person choir arrayed on three rows in the sanctuary facing the congregation sang several gospel songs, clapping and waving to the beat of a key-board ensemble. The president swayed gently to the strong beat and the amped-up sound system.
A number of speakers referred to the president’s attendance. “The president of the United States and his family,’’ “our black president,’’ “the commander in chief,’’
The Rev. Dr. Michael E. Bell Sr., pastor of the church, referred to the president as the “most intelligent, most anointed, most charismatic president of American.’’ He called Mrs. Obama “his beautiful wife – TV cameras don’t do her justice.’’
“God has His hand all over you,’’ Pastor Bell said, referring to the president. “Anyone would be foolish to come up against him.’’
Pastor Bell called Mrs. Robinson “a true AMEer’’ who was “born an AMEer.’’
Pastor Bell said it “was no accident that he (Obama) is here in light of what happed here last Tuesday,’’ referring to the drive-by shooting deaths of four people in the African American community in one of the worst outbreaks of violence in recent Washington history. The president’s presence was “helping our community heal,’’ Pastor Bell said.
Pastor Bell said attendees included Washington, D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty and his famly and Marion Barry, D.C. Council Member from Ward 8.
Mrs. Obama wore a cream-colored scooped-back elbow-length dress. The president wore a dark suit. Melia wore a pink desk and Mrs. Robinson wore a bright rose-colored dress. Your pooler could not spot Sasha.
Pastor Bell announced that the Obama family would leave after they receive communion. The first family kneeled at the communion rail, far stage right, as the Rt. Rev. Adam Jefferson Richardson, Jr., presiding bishop, recited the Lord’s Prayer and then distributed communion, starting far stage left and working his way to the first family. Communion consisted of wafers and individual thimble-size glasses of grape juice.
Mortorcade departed church at 12:50 p.m., back to the White House at 1:04 p.m.
This is Gina. First Lady Michelle Obama was SERIOUS when she said she was going on a welcome tour of every single federal agency. Friday, she ended up at the office of the United States Trade Representative ( USTR). Most people have never head of it . That’s where her current Secretary Julianna Smoot worked prior to heading to the White House. Ron Kirk is US Trade Representative.

Thanks to the hard work of Michelle Obama Watch Managing Editor, Aminah Hanan, your MOW Founder-in- Chief has had time over the past 6 months to master television production. Okay strike that. I haven’t mastered anything. I’ve managed to learn enough to manage other people who’ve mastered television production.
So Saturday, March 27, was a historic occasion. I held auditions for the host of Our East Wing, the Michelle Obama Watch-Inspired Television show. We’ve seen over the past year that there is extreme interest in the East Wing, and not just about what it’s chief occupant is wearing. One need only drive the highways and byways of Texas during March and April to see the lasting legacies First Ladies, such as Lady Bird Johnson have left behind. Or look at the work of First Lady Laura Bush or Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, whose post-presidency profiles loom over those of their husbands.
Most political and social commentary is dominated by old male people who live in Washington, DC- Journalists and prognostitutes going on and on about… themselves. I have no idea where I am headed exactly, but I know enough to know, I ‘ll make it work.
For example, when I posted the casting call, I thought I was going to be looking for a single host, but after the auditions I know I am going to be going for more than one host.
Saturday was my first day in the mim-studio without my instructor. COMEDY! I was always one button away from making things work. I would have %99 percent of things right, but that 1% stumped me. Simple things like recording the video on a DVD. Clearly I have to review the whole audio thingy as well. Needless to say I am most in need of a crew .
I’m happy to have all of you along for this journey. 2011 rolls around passively watching mainstream media do what they do…poorly. We’ll be creating our own digital destiny.

This is Gina. In case you didn’t know, Desiree Rogers has left the building, the one at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue that is. Though some of you expressed frustration with Roger’s appearance in photos with the First Lady, she didn’t really ever bother me. I didn’t really ever give Desiree more than a passing thought. She wasn’t the First Lady so I figured “who cares?” In fact what bothered me the most was the ganging up on her in the end to make her smaller than what she is. Desiree is Desiree. Folks knew who she was when she was chosen for her position.
I still marvel at the fact that Desiree Rogers is gone *achoo* and Timothy Geithner has managed to hold on to his job *achoo*
I also bristle at this blood thirsty desire to see you “put in your place” by the likes of the Washington Post’s Sally Quinn, who doesn’t even have the social intelligence not to schedule her child’s wedding on the same day as her husband’s granddaughter’s wedding and then lacks the self awareness not to realize that nobody wants to read about her social faux pas in the pages of the Washington Post.
I can’t imaging WHY Robin and April tried to kick a sister when she was down. I can’t imagine AT ALL. COMPLETELY CLUELESS.
Maybe you are a mean spirited harpy as some have tried to argue to me – who cares? You rocked out the 12 months you were in the White House. I’ll miss the fabulosity. Black women need more fabulosity and you brought the FAB! Sure maybe you could have been out of the camera shot a bit more, but then again, if you had been we’d have nothing to remember you by.
PPS. I don’t know what kind of New Orleans brew you are concocting at the house, but you need to bottle it and sell it because I can only DREAM of looking that fab when I am 50 years old. Black don’t crack!

This is Gina. I was watching the videos from this weekends Women in the World Conference which included appearances from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Her Majesty Queen Rania of Jordan, Fmr. Sec. of State Madeleine Albright, Christine Amanpour, Meryl Streep, Leslie Stahl, and Valerie Jarrett. The video clip I was is called Could Michell Obama Help Africa? It interesting to see how women in the rest of the world view the influence and power of First Lady Obama.

Rusty Depass has a new cohort in the what the $#*& were they thinking-unimaginative racist club. No seriously, couldn’t all these folks get together and brainstorm some new innovative ways to articulate their bigotry. By now many of you have heard about the rocket scientist Walt Baker. Mr. Baker is now the FORMER CEO of the Tennessee Hospitality Association.
By former, we mean recently FORMER, on account of his utter complete stupidity:
This was a no-brainer. Mr. Hospitality forwarded an e-mail depicting Michelle Obama as a chimpanzee, perhaps inspired by Chip Saltsman, the former state Republican Party chairman who thought it would be funny to send around copies of a song titled “Barack the Magic Negro.” Commercial Appeal.
Apparently Tennessee tourism officials are also fielding complaints that Mr. Hospitality’s stupidity is costing them state tourism dollars.
While some may rush to dismiss people like Mr. Baker as relics of a bygone era, the Commercial Appeal summed it up best when they pointed out the significance of what Mr. Hospitality tried to play off as a joke.
The tactic is probably as old as conflict itself. Nazi Germany’s anti-Semitic propaganda portrayed Jews as rats. Our own demonization of the Japanese during World War II made them appear sub-human. SOURCE

Hey folks, this is Gina. AAAAAAH! I Played soccer as a wee lass. I was a fullback or “defender.” And yes, I was a fat child who played soccer for those that were wondering. I’m all for exercise and movement. I was having a really crappy end to a so so day and these photos just made me smile and y’all know I ain’t the biggest fan of the whole war on fat children thing, but I can’t knock the kiddies playing soccer with the First Lady of the United States. I guess she really did mean it when she said “Let’s Move.” These kids will remember this for the rest of their lives.
First Lady Michelle Obama joined the US Soccer Foundation, Major League Soccer, Women’s Professional Soccer, the National Alliance for Hispanic Health and others at a soccer clinic in Washington DC to highlight the Let’s Move! campaign and the importance of children getting 60 minutes of active play each day. This event will build on Major League Soccer’s support of Let’s Move! by expanding outreach and participation in youth soccer and education efforts on the importance of eating well and staying active. Soccer is the number one sport among America’s youth, with 4 million young boys and girls registered to play across the country. Since its creation in 1994, the US Soccer Foundation, which is the major philanthropic arm of US Soccer, has funded more than 489 youth programs and helped build more than 1,200 soccer fields.
This is Gina. I know.I know. Many of you didn’t like Desiree Roger’s high profile. But say what you want to say about Desiree, if she had anything to do with the thousands of ordinary Americans getting unprecedented access to the White House and the First Lady, then she did a fabulous job. I’m not going to toss aside the Healthy Kids Fair, the Music Series, the Mentoring Program, the White House Garden, and all the other events which brought ordinary individuals into the White House just because two ignorant strivers, in the form of the Salahis crashed her party.
With Roger’s departure and the entrance of Juliana Smoot, could we be seeing an East Wing that focuses more granting access to high powered rich folks instead of the adorable tots from Bancroft Elementary? I don’t know, but that’s the early speculation. That Smoot was selected to cater to the rich and the powerful and all the egos that got bruised when the East Wing opened its arms to DC school children and apparently gave the DC power elites the shaft.
Rogers told Lynn Sweet that she saw her role as turning the White House into the “people’s house,” and Michelle Obama praised her in a statement for “welcoming scores of everyday Americans through its doors, from wounded warriors to local schoolchildren to NASCAR drivers.”
Smoot may have the same goal, but her credentials and relationships point in the opposite direction: To ensuring access and satisfaction for the ultra-wealthy elite who will, incidentally, be called on to finance President Obama’s next campaign. Ben Smith, Politico
Only time will tell. Desiree, we wish you the best of luck in the future, some have said you aren’t a nice person and appeared to be a camera hog. That may well be true, but they can’t say you didn’t make the White House open and available to ordinary Americans. It was awesome to watch the East Wing blossom over the past year, we hope that trend continues.

It doesn’t get any better than this. The First lady has invited the cast of Glee to the White House for the the annual Easter Egg Roll. I need to borrow a small child for the day so I can get some tickets

My favorite episode had to be the fall finale called “Sectionals” “My Life Would Suck With-ooooout Youuuuuu! ” And now here is one of the best scenes from last season. Ready, Set, Go!
The President and First Lady have announced that this year’s White House Easter Egg Roll will be held on Monday, April 5, 2010 with the theme of “Ready, Set, Go!” promoting health and wellness. The event will feature live music, sports courts, cooking stations, storytelling and, of course, Easter egg rolling. All of the activities will encourage children to lead healthy and active lives and follow the First Lady’s ‘Let’s Move!’ initiative, a national campaign to combat childhood obesity. The White House will open its South Lawn for children aged 12 years and younger and their families. Full ticketing information is below. We hope to see you at the White House!

White House Easter Egg Roll tickets will be distributed through an online lottery system, allowing guests from across the United States to participate in a tradition that dates back to 1878.
Entries for the 2010 White House Easter Egg Roll Online Lottery will be accepted from Thursday, February 25 through Sunday, February 28. One entry per person may be submitted at anytime during the lottery period. All entries will have an equal chance of being selected.
The lottery will be run on March 1. Lottery results will be available starting Thursday, March 4, 2010 at recreation.gov
Here is First Lady Michelle Obama’s interview with Mike Huckabee. She speaks about how she deals with attacks on her family. Her response is that most of America. She said campaigning still brings tears to her eyes. She says her mentor program and bringing children into the White House is one of the most fun parts about being in the White House. She also talked about the weeMichelles getting to meet the Pope and the Queen. We enjoyed watching their world travels this summer.

I love the first lady, I really do. But lately she looks like Cruella de Vil’s aesthetician has gotten her hands on her. What’s with her eyebrows? When she kicked off her campaign to fight childhood obesity on Tuesday they looked almost like stick-ons. Ariana’s Playhouse
Karen Tanabe goes on to basically say the First Lady’s brows made her look like and Angry Black Woman (GASP!):
When Barack Obama was in it to win it, journalists wrote that Michelle Obama’s brows were going to lose the election for him. Too harsh, too severe they said. Well that seemed a tad harsh, but they did look almost triangular. Americans were screaming that they were more angled than Jack Nicholson’s, Bill O’Reilly said her intense look was too angry, etc. etc. and Michelle Obama’s makeup artist Ingrid Grimes-Miles finally listened. They came down a few millimeters and were filled in a tad too.
Wow, what a burden Black women must bear in order to reassure non-Black people that we are not angry. Ms. Tanabe is so oblivious that her “privilege” is showing- why else would she think its a Black woman’s responsibility to alter her appearance to make women like Ms. Tanabe more comfortable. Golly Gee, Black women have nothing to be angry about.
Well NOW we know why Robin Givhan has been penning those poisonous hit pieces on First Lady Michelle Obama, she has a book coming our called “Michelle.” We thought the “look at me” venom was because Craig Robinson stood Robin up when they were all at Princeton, but nope, its pure “look at me” capitalism at work.
