    Everyone has seen trucks idling when they seem to be "just waiting" at a truck or rest stop.  Many drivers keep the engine running to allow for heating / cooling and even to run appliances in their sleeper cab.

  • US Gov’t Creates Significant Waste with Printing that is Not Needed

    paperlA recent report from the Washington Times shows that a significant amount of printing by US Govt employees is never needed … it is thrown out or recycled.  Wow – 1/3 of all printed paper is wasted !!

    China is looking to use off shore wind farms to help power the country … with a significant part of the population on the eastern shore this may prove to better than bringing coal generated power in from the west of China.

  • Greening the Hotel Room

    Do you hate to waste energy at home?  How about when you travel?  Some travelers are a little less energy efficient on the road then at home.  Some hotels are helping to change that …

    I remember when I was in Singapore in 1990 and the hotel had a neat way to save energy.  If you wanted the lights and A/C to work in the room you had to put the key chain (actually a block of plastic with metal at  the bottom) in a slot by the door.  This completed a circuit that "turned the power on" in the room.  And when you left … you took the key and off went the power.

  • US Air Force Test Bio-Jet Fuel in A10C

    Bio fuel is being looked at for cars and commercial jets … now the USAF is looking to see if J8 jet fuel can be supplemented or even replaced by bio-jet fuel.

  • Besam – Eco Friendly Products from an Eco Friendly Company

    While at the National Geographic Museum in DC I noticed that their entrance doors are made by Besam and were marked as "low energy power operated door".

    Many businesses are reluctant to not have the door always open to make the store more inviting and easier for customers to come in – this wastes tremendous amounts of energy and money in heating and cooling costs. besam logo

  • AT&T “ZERO CHARGES” Save Energy

    chargersGhost power users are devised that are "turned" off but still draw power.  Included in this  category are batter charges used for cell phones and the like.

    Most people leave these charges plugged in all the time and they are "burning power" all the time.  Feel the charger and it is usually warm …. wasting electricity.

  • Sierra Club Weighs in on Electric vs. Wood for Heat

    The Sierra Club’s "Hey Mr. Green" tells us …it depends on the quality / newness of your wood stove and where the pollution ends up — at a power plant or in your neighborhood.  No easy answers but some good info.

    " … carbon footprint depends on the source of your electric power and the quality of your wood burner. … power … generated from coal or other fossil fuels … footprint might be bigger than if you’re burning wood in a new, efficient, EPA-approved firebox or stove. …"

    " … wood burner … releases a lot more other pollutants into the air … releases them right where you and your neighbors breathe … wood … emits 250 times as much global-warming methane as burning coal in a power plant."

  • Solar Powered Rickshaws Could Cut Pollution in India

    rickshawIndia has lots of gas and diesel powered rickshaws … these emit significant quantities of pollution … there is work to outfit rickshaws with batteries and an electric motor.  These cost close to 3 x the cost of a traditional rickshaw but the government may offer loans to help offset the cost differential.
