  • Should I alter my diet?

    Hello all,

New comer to the forum and taking responsibility for my diabetes. Thus, I have several questions about the foods I eat and my diet. I am a type 1 and I take humalog (10 units) at each meal and lantus (10 units) before bed.

First off, I would like to know if I need to be on the low carb diet. I currently weigh 125 (5’10), which is just barely above under weight according to my wii fit lol. I have lost six pounds since last year, that I would like to regain if possible, and about 20ish pounds since I was diagnosed.

After seeing several people suggesting the low carb diet I started checking and writing down all the carbs I was intaking. I have no idea how one can only intake 100g/day. After cutting out several carb I am still intaking roughly 175-225g/day on a good day.

I do admit that I eat a lot of bread (wheat) which I cannot give up because of my love for cold cut and peanut butter sandwiches and morning bagels. I am, also, a huge pasta and pizza fanatic.

Past those exceptions, I think I eat fairly healthy. I generally eat a steady diet of soups, beef stew, fish, chicken, stir fry, and some veggies. For snacks I have substituted chips for woven crackers, still eat gobs of nuts, sugar free pudding, pockys, and/or bagels or pop tart (limited it to 1/2 a pop tart pack or 1/2 of a bagel as a snack).

I have noticed this past week or two (since I have been monitoring my blood sugar levels) that if I eat something with fewer carbs I do need less insulin or need to eat more. Such as with beef stew my sugar will bottom out if I take 10 units and only eat the beef stew. Anyways, I am sure I will post up some more questions as they come to me.

    As for now…good night everyone.

  • Hello everyone…

    Hello all,

I am Joshua and I, currently, have type-one diabetes. I was diagnosed just over 3 years ago. I am, currently, twenty three and had just turned twenty when I developed and diagnosed with type one diabetes. I chose, willingly and lazily, to not educate nor take care for myself appropriately. I have come to realize that I do need to educate and take care of myself to further live a healthy, eventful, and active life.

I am, currently, working for my father at his retail store and do not have insurance. Thus, it has been extremely tough on my family and I to always find the appropriate funds to be treated correctly. I have racked up tremendous amounts of debt from minimal hospital visits, but luckily have not done any real damage to my body.

I have recently been testing my sugar every time before I eat and before I go to bed. This has been helping me keep track of my sugar levels and has allowed some accurate room for sliding my medicine. I haven’t really been given much information on sliding my medicine, since my doctor has not been much help on this issue. I am currently taking Humolog which is a fast acting insulin.

Well, I guess I won’t ramble on. I really joined to gather as much information as I can, help anyone I can, and hopefully gain some therapeutic relief on my health and future health.

    Thanks for listening,
