  • ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity to receive Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update

    transformer-pad-infinity-jelly-bean-asus

It’s been a good day for Android updates, and ASUS is joining the club with a Facebook announcement for their Transformer Pad Infinity. The powerful tablet will be updated to Android 4.2 over the air starting today. ASUS does a pretty good job of keeping their devices updated, and this just keeps up that trend.

The update includes all the 4.2 goodies we’ve grown to love, including lock screen widgets and multi-user support, so definitely keep checking to see when you’ll be able to download the update. You definitely won’t want to skip this one.

    sprint_lg_optimus_g_jelly_bean_rollout

Not too long ago Sprint began updating its version of the Optimus G to Jelly Bean, and AT&T looks to be following suit. It’s almost a month late, but hey, better late than never. AT&T hasn’t officially announced the update, but many members on the carrier’s own community forums are beginning to receive the update, so it’s definitely happening. The update comes in at 336 MB and brings your device up to Android 4.1.2, Build E97020j. Anyone receiving that coveted update on their Optimus G yet?

  • First look at Facebook Home UI

    facebook-home-drawer

Just yesterday we saw pictures of the Facebook Phone’s hardware, but the software is what’s really exciting, right? Thanks to @evleaks and courtesy of 9to5 Google, we’ve got our first glimpse at what the custom Android skin is going to look like.

In the first picture you can see what’s likely to be an app drawer, complete with standard Google apps. There was some speculation that Facebook might pull an Amazon and cut ties with Google completely in the software, but that’s obviously not the case. Aside from the Google apps, we have the expected Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram apps. On the top of the app drawer, there are shortcuts for posting status updates, photos, and check ins on Facebook.

In the other screenshots, we can see a very clean look to the entire skin, and there’s still quite a bit of vanilla Android showing through. All of the icons are stock, the gallery application doesn’t appear to have been changed much, the status bar is keeping its holo theme, etc. More than anything, it’s just an extremely unique launcher for your apps with a few applications unique to the Facebook phone. Personally, I’m a fan of the less intrusive approach Facebook is taking here.

Even though this is a pretty small peek at what the phone can actually do, we can get a pretty good idea of how the phone will function from these leaks, assuming they end up coming true tomorrow. Have these pictures changed anyone’s mind about getting a Facebook phone?

  • Lenovo IdeaPhone K900 barely beats out the Galaxy S 4 in benchmarks thanks to Intel CPU

    lenovo-logo

The Galaxy S 4 is one of the most high end phones money can buy in terms of sheer processing power, but it’s hard for any one device to hold that title for long in the quickly evolving mobile industry. This time, it looks like Lenovo and Intel are the ones looking to outdo Samsung. Lenovo’s latest 5.5 inch phablet, the IdeaPhone K900, packs a zippy dual-core Intel Atom Clover Trail+ CPU clocked at 2 GHz. And, according some AnTuTu benchmarks, it actually edges out Samsung’s Exynos 5 (octa-core) processor. Of course, at that point, you wouldn’t really notice much difference in real world usage of either device, but it goes to show that more cores don’t necessarily mean a better processor.

The K900 features a full HD 5.5 inch screen, Intel’s Atom Clover Trail+ processor, 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of storage, 2500 mAh  battery, but no micro SD card slot. Are any of you surprised that Intel’s processor did so well in benchmarks?

  • Facebook phone images leak, likely to be called the HTC First

    htc-first

Well, if Facebook was trying to hide their phone before the April 4th announcement, they’ve officially failed. We’re getting our first look at the fabled device that’s going to run Facebook’s unique software courtesy of @evleaks on Twitter, and it’s apparently going to be called the HTC First. It is neither HTC’s first phone, nor Facebook’s first attempt at a phone, so I don’t completely understand the naming scheme, but I’m no marketing expert, so maybe I’m just missing something here.

Weird names aside, the First looks like a pretty slick, although generic, device. We can see a volume rocker on the side, a power button on the top, and three buttons along the bottom bezel, presumably a back, home, and menu button, in that order. The rumors say the phone will sport a 4.3 inch screen, and from this render, I’d say that looks pretty accurate. Either way, we only have a few days left before the official announcement. Anyone excited to see this phone in person?

A Samsung device with the exact same dimensions as the S 4 and AT&T’s LTE bands has gotten approval, so unless AT&T and Samsung have another 5-inch device lined up to show us, it’s a pretty safe bet that this is the S 4.

    att_logo

If you’ve been holding out and waiting for preorder information on the HTC One, we’ve finally got some news for you. There’s no official release date, but if you’re on AT&T, you will supposedly be able to preorder the 32 GB variant of the HTC One in a retail store on April 5th, or online on the 4th. Pricing is $249 for the 32 GB base model, which is a bit higher than what we’re used to, but you do get a big chunk of storage. The 64 GB model is rumored to be $299, but those models won’t be available in time for preorders.

The 5th is just a few days away, so I think we can expect some official news from the carriers pretty soon. Hopefully we’ll get a release date out of them, too.

  • LG Lucid 2 headed to Verizon on April 4th

    LG-Lucid-2

If you’ve been looking to upgrade your Verizon phone but don’t need the latest and greatest, or you just want something on the cheaper side, Verizon has something in store that you’ll definitely like. The follow up to last year’s LG Lucid is slated to hit stores on April 4th, and will have the exciting name of the LG Lucid 2. It’s essentially LG’s Optimus F5 with Verizon branding, but it’s a more than capable mid-range phone, so nothing wrong there.

It sports a dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, a 4.3 inch 540 x 960 display, and comes in weighing just 4.5 ounces. Plus, it has a 2460 mAH battery compared to the original Lucid’s 1700 mAH, and that’s always a nice addition. There’s also a inductive charging backplate being featured with the device.

All in all, the Lucid 2 is a very solid mid-range phone, and with a wallet-friendly $1 price tag (on a 2-year agreement, of course) it’s bound to sell fairly well. Anyone planning on picking one of these up?

  • RadioShack gets HTC One signs a bit early, shows Google Play credit offer

    HTC-One-official

It’s officially April, so if previous rumors hold up, we should see the HTC One hit shelves in the US by the end of the month. RadioShack appears to be one of the first to get some promotional materials for the big launch, though, and they’re beginning to market the device in stores with some eye-catching signs. The signs are specifically for the AT&T and Sprint versions of the phone, though, so if you’re a Verizon customer hoping for a last minute change of plans, sorry.

The signs do show a promo for a free $50 Google Play credit if you purchase the One with a two-year agreement, as well as $10 off the $199 price of the phone. The Play credit nice, and the $10 off isn’t much, but it’s a nice gesture. (and if everyone else launches it at $199, why not get it at RadioShack?)

There’s no official release dates on any of the signage, unfortunately, but I can’t imagine it’ll be too much longer. We’ll be sure to keep you updated as soon as anything else pops up.

  • SwiftKey launches SwiftKey Tilt keyboard, just in time for April Fools

    SwiftKey-logo_large

SwiftKey has always created revolutionary ideas with their keyboards, and their latest offering, SwiftKey Tilt, continues that tradition. Instead of traditional finger typing, Tilt gets your entire body into the action. There’s a little ball on the keyboard that you “tilt” across letters to spell out your words. If you’ve played the labyrinth games where you guide a ball into a hole at the end of a puzzle, you’ll understand how this a full-body experience. SwiftKey has even put out a video showing it in action.

Unfortunately, there’s no easily available link to try out the next generation of mobile typing, but SwiftKey said it will be available to those ”inquisitive enough to find it.” Let us know in the comments if you get your hands on the joke keyboard.

SwiftKey Tilt:  The Whole -Body Typing Experience

LONDON — April 1, 2013 — SwiftKey today unveils SwiftKey Tilt, the future of smartphone typing. The revolutionary new input method transforms the everyday activity of typing into a whole-body, immersive experience. SwiftKey Tilt makes it possible to text loved ones, email colleagues and type soliloquies without even touching the screen; just rock, wiggle or shimmy your smartphone to insert words in a truly innovative way. Drawing on SwiftKey’s mind-reading word prediction ability, SwiftKey Tilt is the most significant typing innovation since the quill.

SwiftKey Tilt works by unleashing a pinball into the keyboard to power a third, exciting way to type on your device. While tapping or flowing words, the device accelerometer sends the brightly colored ball across the keyboard and when it collides with a prediction, the word is inserted. This frees up thumbs to make even quicker progress through a text, email or Tweet. It also offers users an eye-catching way to interact with their devices and is fully compatible with both the Macarena and the Harlem Shake.

“We always felt that fundamentally typing is about how you express yourself,” said Dr. Ben Medlock, SwiftKey co-founder and CTO. “We realized that we’ve never really focused on making that possible through physical movement, though. With SwiftKey Tilt we’ve changed all that.  By moving your whole body to control the little pink ball, users can now be more expressive when they type. Whether that’s body poppin’, Gangnam Style or my personal Tilting move of choice of ‘the mash potato’, it leads to a more expressive and personalized result.”

The innovative new typing method is available today for all SwiftKey users inquisitive enough to find it.

SwiftKey is a No.1 best-selling app on Google Play in over 50 countries, with contextual predictions available in 60 languages and counting. For more information about SwiftKey, visit www.swiftkey.net.

  • Facebook’s new “home on Android” will actually be a forked OS called Facebook Home

    Bug_Droid_Facebook

Facebook recently sent out an invitation to an event on April 4th where they’ll be showing off their “new home on Android.” Well, we’ve got some new rumors about what that’s going to be a few days ahead of the event.

That home on Android is actually going to be called Facebook Home, and it’s going to be a forked version of Android specific to the Facebook phone(s). There’s no word on whether this will still feature traditional Google apps and be more of a heavy overlay like HTC’s Sense, or if Facebook is going all the way and completely cutting ties with Google like with the versions of Android that ship on Amazon’s Kindle devices. Considering how well the HTC ChaCha didn’t sell, though, I think Facebook is likely going to want to take the Amazon approach here and tweak the entire experience around Facebook, not just adding a handful of extra apps.

Aside from that, they’re still in discussion with carriers about the device, so hopefully we’ll learn more in a few days when it becomes official.

  • HTC One X to receive Sense 5 and 4.2 over the summer

    htc-one-x-jelly-bean

Naturally when a new device comes out, owners of the previous generation of the device are left wondering if they’ll ever see the new software features on their current phones. And, after seeing the cool stuff Sense 5 can do, I can imagine there were some envious One X owners after HTC took the wraps off the One.

Well, good news if you do own a One X. The latest leak from a trusted Twitter user, @LlabTooFeR, says that the international One X will be receiving Android 4.2.2 and Sense 5 in one update as soon as June or July. Supposedly, other members of the family will get the same update, (One S, One X+, Butterfly) but no time frame was given for those devices. I imagine HTC is realizing that to play with the big boys, you have to keep some of your older devices updated, and this is a big first step in the right direction.

  • Latest filing from Samsung on infamous patent suit confirms Apple could get more than the original $1.05 billion award

    Apple vs Samsung

I’m sure you’re all too familiar with the huge patent battle between Samsung and Apple that ended with Apple being awarded $1.05 billion in damages. Then, the damages were reduced to about $600 million, and then Apple claimed mistakes were made in calculations, etc… It’s been a long, drawn out process.

Now, the second trial concerning 14 devices that infringed on Apple’s patents will be opened up again for a second verdict. Samsung wants the jury to review whether or not those devices infringed on Apple’s patents in the first place to attempt to reduce the damages, but by doing so, Samsung admitted that Apple could “seek even more damages on these products in the new trial.” So that $600 million could come way down… or it could back up to $1 billion in damages again. Obviously Samsung’s lawyers feel pretty confident they can make a better case this time around.

As a side note, Samsung also said Apple’s claims for reinstating the $85 million Judge Lucy Koh took away were ”procedurally improper and substantively incorrect.”  Like with all the other patent trouble, we’ll be sure to keep you updated as soon as anything else comes out of the courtroom between these two.

  • How to send SMS or MMS text messages from your PC or tablet using your Android phone number

    android-sms-01

Our little Android devices can do almost as much as some PCs, but it’s easy to forget that your smartphone is still a phone at heart. And with all the instant messaging services available for you to communicate, sometimes text messaging gets put in the backseat to the more robust features of something like Google Talk. Being able to keep up a conversation across multiple devices is incredibly handy, and it’s often much easier to type on a full computer keyboard as opposed to a smaller smartphone keyboard.

Using instant messaging isn’t without it’s flaws, however. If you have friends that all use different IM services, or friends without smartphones, it can be difficult to keep up with all of them in different programs and browser tabs on your desktop, and in the case of messaging someone without a smartphone, you’ll have to use your phone to send traditional text messages anyway. With this guide, we’re going to get into a few different apps that add many of those instant messaging features to your SMS text messaging, including being able to send texts from different devices and syncing conversations across devices.

    desksms

DeskSMS is an application developed by Koush, who’s also responsible for a handful of other extremely useful Android applications, like Carbon, which we’ve discussed as one of the best ways to backup your phone data. The premise of DeskSMS is simple; you link your phone to your Google account, and sign into a website (or browser extension) with your Google account, and you immediately have access to your SMS logs and can freely send and receive texts, all from the comfort of your full-sized keyboard.

DeskSMS is great for a number of reasons. First, it’s simple to set up, and simple to use. Sending texts is just like opening up an app on your phone, typing away, then hitting enter to send the text. The devices don’t need to be connected to the same WiFi network or through Bluetooth. As long as they’re tied to the same Google account, you’re in business.

Second, DeskSMS offers many ways to send text messages. Want a browser extension for Chrome or Firefox? No problem. Would you rather use a website? You can do that. Maybe you want your texts to link into your Google Talk account or Gmail account? You can do that, too. Possibly the coolest feature of DeskSMS is text forwarding to Google Talk (or any third party IM application that supports Talk), so you can essentially turn a text conversation into an instant messaging conversation without the other person doing anything differently. Koush also offers a TabletSMS app, which syncs and pushes your text messages to any tablet with the app installed. Of course, you may not even need to do that if you’re using the Google Talk or Gmail forwarding, but we’re never going to complain about having more options.

DeskSMS itself is free, but the service costs $4.99 per year. Of course, for the convenience of being able to send text messages from any internet enabled device, it’s definitely an app worth passing up on coffee one day for.

    mightytext

SMS Text Messaging ↔PC Texting from MightyText is similar to DeskSMS. It’s an easy to use, free app that syncs SMS from your phone onto your computer or tablet. It works very similarly to DeskSMS by syncing through your Google account, but it does also offer a handful of extra features, like the ability to see your phone’s battery level and see who is calling you on your phone before answering. It also lets you securely back up your SMS and even MMS messages to MightyText’s servers, which is handy for extra data backup. MightyText also offers tablet texting via an extra app just like DeskSMS. Plus, there’s no monthly or yearly service charge to pay for here.

MightyText is extremely functional, but it is a bit more bloated than DeskSMS. If you’re looking for all the extra features, you’ll definitely want to give this app a shot. Below is the main app to download, and the companion tablet app. You’ll only need the tablet app if you want to text message from your tablet.

    tablet-talk

If you’re not much on communicating on your computer, and it’s more about the tablet for you, then Tablet Talk might be the way to go. It’s more lightweight than either of the first two options and doesn’t need to latch onto your Google account to make things work.

Essentially, Tablet Talk tethers your tablet and your phone together, either through a WiFi network or Bluetooth. Once connected, Tablet Talk becomes a fully functional SMS application for your tablet and automatically syncs up with your phone messages. It also adds in the ability to make phone calls through your tablet, which neither of the other options can do. While holding a tablet up to your face isn’t practical, if you use a Bluetooth headset and would prefer to do everything through your tablet, this is a great option.

Tablet Talk is completely free, and there’s only one app you need to install. It automatically detects if it’s installed on a phone or tablet and sets up accordingly. And if you’re into extreme customization, there’s plenty of themes for Tablet Talk in the Play Store.

    verizon-messages

If you’re a Verizon customer, you have access to a solution for cross-device text messaging through your Verizon phone number. Their Verizon Messages application is a simple way to enable that functionality; install the app and link up your Verizon phone number and you’re good to go. You can use the app on your PC or tablet and see up to 90 days of saved messages, and freely send and receive SMS.

The Verizon app also has a few other unique features, like the ability to set up an auto-reply, report spam messages, full group messaging support, and even a widget with a badge counter for unread messages. It’s definitely a robust app, and if you’re already a Verizon customer, this one is definitely worth checking out.

These are three extremely simple-to-use apps to enable text messaging across multiple devices to help SMS keep up with instant messaging. A few OEMs do offer this functionality through other services on their products, (Samsung’s KIES software comes to mind) but in many cases, it’s easier to pick your own software for compatibility and flexibility. Are there any apps you use that didn’t make the list?

  • Google’s Babble is actually Google Babel and will come to Android, iOS, Chrome, Gmail, and G+

    babble_geekdotcom

If you’ve been keeping up at home, we’ve heard a ton of reports lately that Google is releasing a unified chat client called “Babble.” Well, turns out that client is actually called Babel, but many of the other rumored features were right. Babel will be available cross-platform on Android, iOS, Chrome, Gmail, and Google Plus, but as of right now, Google Voice isn’t part of the list. It may come at a later point, but not right out of the gate.

Babel will allow you to access the same conversation list from any of those platforms, and features a new, conversation based UI, picture messaging, improved cross-device notifications, and picture messaging. That’s a pretty fully featured app, and it’s definitely going to improve our communication experience as a whole.

Babel as a name does make sense for Google’s project, though, especially if you consider the Biblical meaning of the word and the story of the Tower of Babel. However, it still might not be the official name of the app, whenever it’s released, so take it with a grain of salt. Personally, I think Google will opt for something a bit more accessible and catchy, but I guess we’ll find out soon enough.

  • HTC One first smartphone to receive iFixit’s lowest possible repair score

    HTC_One_Press_Shot_10

The HTC One looks to be a fantastic device, but if you buy electronics based on how easy they are to repair, you’re probably going to want to pass on this one. According to iFixit, the One is pretty much impossible to repair, scoring a 1 out of 10. Unfortunately for HTC, that’s the lowest score ever given to a smartphone in iFixit’s ratings.

According to the rate, opening the the rear case without damaging it is nearly impossible, and it is impossible to replace the screen without removing the rear case. On top of that, there’s a sheet of copper inside the phone that protects the guts, and it’s easy to wrinkle and distort, which makes the whole process that much more difficult.

The One is a gorgeous device, and I’m sure it’s going to sell extremely well, despite component delays. But if you do decide to pick one up, make sure to grab insurance, too.

  • Facebook to unveil “new home on Android” April 4th

    Facebook_VoIP_Voice_Calling

Facebook is planning something pretty big for a large unveiling on April 4th, according to their latest press invitation. What big thing, you may ask? Their “new home on Android.” What exactly does that mean? We don’t know, but we can make some pretty good guesses.

Facebook has recently been testing the waters with updates through their app outside of Google Play, so it makes sense that they may be launching something, like a phone that’s been in the rumor mill for ages. We’ve heard all kinds of rumors leak about the “Facebook phone,” and with Amazon’s success with their Kindle lineup, it wouldn’t be too hard to imagine Facebook taking another stab at the phone market, despite their first attempt not doing so well.

While all the signs point towards a Facebook phone announcement on April 4th, it’s important to remember they are still rumors. Facebook could just announce more changes to their Android application, or anything else. When the 4th rolls around, though, we’ll be sure to let you know.

Sometimes, it can be difficult to find apps specifically for your Android tablet on the Play Store, especially if you’re browsing from the Play Store website. The Play Store app has had a featured tablet apps section for quite some time now, but Google is finally putting some clout behind it on the website, too.

There’s a relatively short list of apps that shows off a little over 100 apps that do a great job of adhering to Android UI guidelines. The apps aren’t necessarily written for just tablets, but they are written in a way that larger screens can take advantage of the extra space without looking just like blown up phone apps, and Google is trying to give them a nudge and a thumbs up with some extra advertising, probably to convince other developers to do the same with their applications.

Anyway, if you’ve been looking for some new apps to use on your tablet, you may want to check out the featured tablet apps. You never know, there may be a nice little gem you’ve been missing hidden somewhere in that list.
