  • LG Share the Genius event schedule for May to introduce LG Optimus G Pro

    HTC_Share_The_Genius_Event_May_01_2013_Optimus_G_Pro

With AT&T set to add the LG Optimus G Pro to their portfolio starting May 10th, LG is getting on the event bandwagon for their latest flagship device to hit the U.S. shores with a Share the Genius event on May 1st. The event will take place in New York City and is headlined by indie music group Atlas Genius. The LG Optimus G Pro will be entering the market up against the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S 4 so any buzz they can generate to help show that they too are a player in the top end of the smartphone market will help.

  • HTC sells out of unlocked HTC One devices for $575

    htc_one_unlocked_sold_out

Earlier today HTC decided to give consumers an extra option to get their hands on a new HTC One device. On their own web site, HTC was offering a special unlocked 32GB version of the HTC One that would work on any GSM network. The price is listed at $575, which is slightly less than the $650 being asked for the Developer Edition which was recently delayed. Unfortunately, HTC is already reporting the device is out of stock with next availability not scheduled for two to four weeks from now.

  • HTC One Developer Edition delayed along with 32GB unlocked version

    HTC One_Silver

Buyers who placed pre-orders for an HTC One Developer Edition were probably expecting to receive a shipping notification yesterday or at the latest today. Unfortunately, the lack of shipping notices raised suspicions of a delay that has now been made official by HTC. Emails have been sent to those who placed an order that reads:

    Hello [HTC Customer]

We have an important update about your order. Due to shipping issues with the 32G unlocked and 64G Developers Editions of the New HTC One®, there will be a slight delay in shipping your HTC One® to you. We expect to have your phone delivered to you, via overnight shipping, before the end of April. We’ll do everything we can to get it shipped to you as soon as possible.

Also, due to overwhelming demand, there will be a delay in shipping your free case. We expect to begin receiving the Double Dip cases in mid-May, and will ship them as soon as they’re available.

We understand the excitement and anticipation that comes with a new phone, and we are confident that the HTC One® will exceed that anticipation.

    Thanks for the support,

    HTC ShopAmerica

The original plan was to have these versions of the HTC One shipping by the same day AT&T and Sprint had the device available for retail purchase. Now, potential buyers will have to wait a few extra days to get their device unless they are willing to pick up a carrier-locked version.

  • Google Fiber officially coming to Provo, UT

    google_fiber_provo_announcement

Provo mayor John Curtis took to the podium this afternoon to officially announce the “epic” news that Google Fiber is coming to Provo, UT. According to the deal that was announced, Google Fiber will offer free Internet service for any of Provo’s 115,000 residents who are currently on the existing iProvo network for a mere $30 activation fee for up to 7 years. Google will upgrade the existing network to Gigabit technology as part of the project and when the upgrade is complete, residents will be able to upgrade their service to Gigabit level.  Google is also offering to provide free Gigabit service to 25 local entities like schools, hospitals and libraries. Provo’s government has been struggling with their iProvo network, going so far as to solicit proposals to sell the network to a private entity. After making a trip to Silicon Valley and being able to meet with Google representatives, Provo officials realized Google Fiber fit in nicely with a 50-year visioning process that was underway for Provo. This announcement makes Provo the third city to have Google Fiber, following in the footsteps of Kansas City and Austin, Texas.

  • Google’s Eric Schmidt hints at “phenomenal” Android-based devices

    Schmidt

At the D: Dive Into Mobile conference in New York, Eric Schmidt did not spend all of his time talking about the accomplishments of Android. He also spent some time talking about the future of the operating system as far as the hardware it will run on. He hinted that new products he saw during a recent visit to Google’s Motorola unit are “very, very impressive.” In his conversation at the conference, he indicated the stuff that Motorola is working on may be considered “phones-plus.” What that means exactly, he left hanging out there for people to ponder.

Any conversation about Android on something other than a smartphone or tablet device invariably leads to Google’s newest product, Google Glass. Love them or hate them, they are poised to land with a big splash on the tech landscape. Whether Glass can change the market and become mainstream is a big question, one that Schmidt thinks has been answered already based on how they have become ubiquitous on the Google campus.

Anyone want to take a guess as to what Google may have planned for future Android devices? Where do you think it could be deployed that may be considered non-traditional?

  • Sony planning to expand retail footprint amongst successful Sony Xperia Z sales

    Sony_Xperia_Z_Talk_Android_

Although it sometimes seems like Samsung and HTC are the only manufacturers fighting for Android device supremacy, there are others out there producing some top of the line smartphones that should satisfy even the most cutting edge buyer. A good candidate for this is the Sony Xperia Z which just succeeded at selling 4.6 million units during its first 40 days on the market. Sony appears to be ready to try to capitalize on this success and keep the momentum going, at least in the U.S., with plans to expand their retail footprint through the use of stand-alone stores and freestanding Galleries.

Analysts indicate the Xperia Z’s success can be attributed to three main factors. First, Sony got a jump on other manufacturers by releasing the Xperia Z early in the year and shipping in March, meaning they have not had to compete with other flagship devices that many people are waiting for. Second, with features like the Exmor RS camera lens and being waterproof and dustproof, the device not only competes well against other top-end smartphones, it is able to bring something unique to the table. Finally, the Xperia Z being made from glass is appealing to many buyers who perceive it as being an elegant device.

Riding on the success of the Xperia Z, Sony recently launched a new Sony Store in Palo Alto, California at the Stanford Shopping Center and plans to re-open stores in Miami, San Diego, and Orlando. All of the stores will use a similar design concept to help standardize the buying experience for customers. These openings will bring the number of Sony Stores in the U.S. up to eight. Carrying a smaller selection of Sony products, plans are in the works to open Sony Galleries throughout the country. The Gallery concept is basically a kiosk type location typically found in malls, both indoor and outdoor.

These moves will still leave Sony far behind smartphone giants like Samsung and Apple in terms of retail locations and units sold. However, Sony clearly has some buzz and should be able to convert some of that to increases in market share.

  • Companion app for Google Glass, “MyGlass” arrives in Google Play Store

    myglass_banner

With the release of Google Glass on the near horizon, we have more news about the forthcoming wearable computing device. Earlier we reported on Google releasing the Mirror API that will enable developers to create apps for use on the the Glass devices. Following up on that, Google has released their own app, MyGlass. The app will be used to configure and manage a Google Glass device. It should be pretty obvious that the app is of no use to anyone unless they have a Google Glass device, but Google makes that abundantly clear with their description:

If you don’t have Glass, then downloading this will be a waste of time. Sorry about that. But if you swipe the screenshots to the right you’ll see there’s a picture of a puppy in pajamas. So not a total waste of time after all.

You can check out the puppy in the photo gallery below. If you are interested in installing the app just to check out the look and feel, use one of the Google Play links below. If you have your order in for a new Google Glass device, you will definitely want to hit the download link.

  • DISH Network targets Sprint with competing $25.5B bid to trump SoftBank offer

    dish_network_sprint_logos_combined

DISH Network announced today that they have submitted a merger proposal to Sprint with a value of $25.5 billion. The offer consists of $17.3 billion in cash and another $8.2 billion in stock. According to DISH Network’s news release, the cash portion of the deal represents an 18% premium over the offer currently on the table from SoftBank. DISH Network also points out that the ownership proposal for stockholders is a better deal as Sprint stockholders will end up with a 32% in the entire merged company whereas SoftBank is only offering a 30% stake in the Sprint portion of the company if they buy it up. According to DISH Network, the merger with Sprint will create a unique company that can offer customers video, broadband, and voice services both in-home and out-of-home.

Keep in mind Sprint is also in the process of acquiring full ownership of Clearwire, but that deal is contingent on the closing of the SoftBank deal. With a competing offer now on the table, it is not clear how that might impact the acquisition of Clearwire. Sprint has not yet issued a response to this latest offer. Hit the break for the full press release issued by DISH Network.

DISH Network Proposes Merger with Sprint Nextel Corporation for $25.5 Billion

U.S. technology leader with track record of disrupting entrenched incumbents presents superior alternative to pending SoftBank proposal – DISH offers more cash and a greater ownership stake
Sprint shareholders would receive $7.00 per share, consisting of $4.76 in cash and stock representing approximately 32% in a company with a significantly enhanced strategic position
Creates an industry-leading spectrum portfolio and the only company that can offer customers a fully-integrated, nationwide bundle of in- and out-of-home video, broadband and voice services
Delivers substantial synergies and growth opportunities estimated at $37 billion in net present value, including an estimated $11 billion in cost savings

ENGLEWOOD, Colo.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–DISH Network Corporation (NASDAQ: DISH) today announced that it has submitted a merger proposal to the Board of Directors of Sprint Nextel Corporation (NYSE: S) for a total cash and stock consideration of $25.5 billion. The DISH proposal clearly represents superior value to Sprint shareholders, including greater ownership in a combined company that is better positioned for the future with more spectrum, products, subscribers, financial scale and new opportunities.

DISH is offering Sprint shareholders a total consideration of $25.5 billion, consisting of $17.3 billion in cash and $8.2 billion in stock. Sprint shareholders would receive $7.00 per share, based upon DISH’s closing price on Friday, April 12, 2013. This consists of $4.76 per share in cash and 0.05953 DISH shares per Sprint share. The cash portion of DISH’s proposal represents an 18% premium over the $4.03 per share implied by the SoftBank proposal, and the equity portion represents approximately 32% ownership in the combined DISH/Sprint versus SoftBank’s proposal of a 30% interest in Sprint alone. Together this represents a 13% premium to the value of the existing SoftBank proposal.

“The DISH proposal clearly presents Sprint shareholders with a superior alternative to the pending SoftBank proposal,” said Charlie Ergen, Chairman of DISH Network. “Sprint shareholders will benefit from a higher price with more cash while also creating the opportunity to participate more meaningfully in a combined DISH/Sprint with a significantly-enhanced strategic position and substantial synergies that are not attainable through the pending SoftBank proposal.”

Mr. Ergen continued, “A transformative DISH/Sprint merger will create the only company that can offer customers a convenient, fully-integrated, nationwide bundle of in- and out-of-home video, broadband and voice services. Additionally, the combined national footprints and scale will allow DISH/Sprint to bring improved broadband services to millions of homes with inferior or no access to competitive broadband services. This unique, combined company will have a leadership position in video, data and voice and the necessary broadband spectrum to provide customers with rich content everywhere, all the time.”

The proposed combination will result in synergies and growth opportunities estimated at $37 billion in net present value, including an estimated $11 billion in cost savings.

DISH has provided additional information regarding the proposed merger via a dedicated transaction microsite that can be accessed at http://www.CompleteDishSolution.com.

Barclays is acting as financial advisor to DISH.

Following is text of the letter that DISH sent to Sprint Nextel Corp. Board of Directors on April 15, 2013.

    Board of Directors
    Sprint Nextel Corporation
    6200 Sprint Parkway
    Overland Park, KS 66251
Attn: James H. Hance, Jr., Chairman of the Board

    Dear Jim:

On behalf of DISH Network Corporation (“DISH”), I am submitting this proposal for a merger between DISH and Sprint Nextel Corporation (“Sprint”). Our proposal provides Sprint shareholders with a superior alternative to the pending SoftBank Corporation (“SoftBank”) proposal. It provides more cash and affords your shareholders the opportunity to participate more meaningfully in a combined DISH/Sprint, which will benefit from a significantly enhanced strategic position and substantial synergies that are not attainable through the pending SoftBank proposal.

We are offering Sprint shareholders a total consideration of $25.5 billion, consisting of $17.3 billion in cash and $8.2 billion in stock. Sprint shareholders would receive $7.00 per share, based upon DISH’s closing price on Friday, April 12, 2013. This consists of $4.76 per share in cash and 0.05953 DISH shares per Sprint share. The cash portion of our proposal represents an 18% premium over the $4.03 per share implied by the SoftBank proposal, and the equity portion represents approximately 32% ownership in the combined DISH/Sprint versus SoftBank’s proposal of a 30% interest in Sprint alone. Together this represents a 13% premium to the value of the existing SoftBank proposal.

Our proposal provides a highly-compelling and unique opportunity for Sprint shareholders. We are offering an ownership interest in a combined company with a comprehensive product and services suite, a significantly enhanced subscriber base, considerable financial and operating scale, as well as a spectrum portfolio that would lead the industry. As a result, this merger creates sizable cost and CAPEX savings and promises extensive new revenue opportunities.

Leveraging both companies’ existing assets and expertise, we will be the only company able to offer a fully-integrated, nationwide bundle of in- and out-of-home video, broadband and voice services to meet rapidly evolving customer preferences. The new company’s assets will immediately establish national cross-platform leadership and will position the company to deliver innovative services while expanding our collective subscriber base.

The proposed combination will result in synergies and growth opportunities estimated at $37 billion in net present value. This includes an estimated $11 billion in cost savings, representing approximately $1.8 billion in annual run-rate cost synergies by the third year after closing.

Further, our combined national footprints and scale will allow us to efficiently develop our joint spectrum assets to provide advanced services to the millions of homes with inferior or no access to competitive broadband services.

I am proud of the company we have built and believe we will be an excellent partner to Sprint. Like Sprint, DISH possesses a strong tradition of innovation and industry leadership. We created the third largest pay-TV provider while competing with incumbent cable monopolies and other entrenched operators. DISH has consistently led our industry in service and technology delivery with award-winning innovations like Hopper® with Sling®. Our history of value creation is outstanding. Investors in our 1995 initial public offering have enjoyed a total return of 27 times their original investment, significantly outperforming the broader markets and our peers. We also have a proven track record of responsible capital management.

DISH has significant experience structuring and consummating strategic transactions and only needs to complete confirmatory due diligence, which we believe can be done quickly with your cooperation. We have examined your merger agreement with SoftBank and we would be prepared to execute a definitive merger agreement on substantially similar terms and conditions. Though not a condition of our proposal, we anticipate that the pending transaction with Clearwire would be completed. We are confident that we can obtain all necessary approvals within a reasonable timeframe.

We intend to fund the $17.3 billion cash portion of the transaction using $8.2 billion of our balance sheet cash and additional debt financing. We have a proven track record in raising capital to fund strategic initiatives and have received a Highly Confident Letter from our financial advisor, Barclays, confirming our ability to raise the required financing.

We would be pleased to discuss our plans for the combined company and we are available at any time to meet with the Sprint Board, management and advisors to answer any questions about our proposed merger. We are confident that the Sprint Board will share our view that this proposed merger offers an excellent opportunity for the equity holders of Sprint to realize a superior value for their shares that is unavailable to them under the SoftBank proposal.

While it would have been our preference to have confidential discussions regarding this proposed merger, your existing agreement with SoftBank and the impending deadlines associated with your shareholder vote, will compel us to confirm our intentions publicly. We look forward to hearing from you.

    Very Truly Yours,

    DISH Network Corporation

  • Pink HTC Butterfly to grace Taiwan market

    htc_butterfly_pink

It looks like consumers in Taiwan interested in grabbing a pink HTC Butterfly will get that opportunity according to Taiwanese website ePrice. Their site is reporting today that HTC is making a pink cherry powder colored HTC Butterfly available on April 30th. According to the site, pre-orders are now being accepted at both Yahoo! and PCHome. The pink version will be sold for NT$21,900 ($731 USD). This is slightly less than the red and white versions that have been released.

Last month we reported on rumors that HTC is working on a successor to the HTC Butterfly. The appearance of additional colors on the market is typically a sign that a manufacturer is ready to move on to their next version of a device and are content to drive sales of their previous generation device with new versions, like different colors.

  • Leaked Staples document hints at Samsung Galaxy S 4 availability

    samsung_galaxy_s_4_staples_document_leak

An image alleging to show a leaked Staples document reveals some information about availability of the Samsung Galaxy S 4 at the office supplies retailer. According to the information in the internal memo, the Galaxy S 4 will be available for AT&T customers on April 26th. The T-Mobile version will be available a few days later on May 1st, but Verizon customers will have to wait another month until May 30th. The document does indicate in several places that the Staples reservation process does not guarantee delivery of the device on those dates, just the availability of a unit for a customer to buy when inventory does show up.

The internal document also provides instructions for Staples employees regarding signage to be deployed on April 15th, the day before pre-orders will open for several carriers. You can view the full document below to see if you can pick out any other clues.

  • Rumors of Samsung changing design for Galaxy Note III

    samsung_logo_120

When Samsung announced their latest flagship device, the Samsung Galaxy S 4, one of the criticisms leveled was that it continued the design philosophy of using plastic for the body of the smartphone. The cacophony surrounding this choice grew so loud that Samsung’s executive vice president for the mobile division even took to offering a defense for Samsung’s choice to use plastic while other manufacturers were opting for materials like aluminum and glass. Sources are now indicating Samsung may respond to that criticism when the next Galaxy Note device, the Samsung Galaxy Note III, is released.

These sources claim an internally produced metal version of the Galaxy S 4 was very popular and well received by those who managed to spend some time with it. However, manufacturing dictates and deadlines precluded the use of metal for the Galaxy S 4. There is some time for Samsung to get everything tooled up for the Galaxy Note III and to produce it using something other than plastic. There are some hints that the shape may change as well to something more in line with the HTC One or other devices that are not so rounded as Samsung’s Galaxy line.

Do you think Samsung will make a move to change from plastic to metal for their top tier lines? Do you think they should?

  • New Twitter Music app sort of released today

    twitter_music

Jumping into the online music market, Twitter appears to be in the process of releasing a new Twitter Music app today. Reports indicate the app has been released, but only certain people can get it, mostly celebrities, and only those with iOS devices. Apparently the rollout will continue during this weekend’s Coachella music festival and then culminate with widespread availability next week.

The app is Twitter’s attempt to provide an online streaming music service. Suggestions for artists and tracks will be compiled from data connected to a user’s Twitter account, like who they may be following. Music will stream from within the app via third-party services like iTunes or SoundCloud. Videos will also be available through music video service Vevo. The new app is based on the We Are Hunted music recommendation platform, which Twitter just announced they had purchased last year.

It is unclear what plans are in place to roll the new app out to Android users. The browser based version of the service currently displays an “Invitation Only” message.

  • Facebook Messenger adds chat heads to Android app

    facebook_messenger_chat_heads

When Facebook announced their new Facebook Home, one feature that actually received a fairly warm reception was the “chat heads” function. The chat heads were floating message notifications that could be opened independently of whatever else a user may be doing in the background on their smartphone. The chat heads show up as a small circle on your screen filled with a user’s profile pic and a number indicator. The chat heads can be moved around, but they stay docked to an edge of the screen. Tapping on them will open a window where you can reply or open the message in the full Messenger app. When you are ready to get rid of the chat head, just drag it down to the bottom of the screen.

You do not need to install Facebook Home to take advantage of the chat heads. Just install or update Facebook Messenger on Android 2.2 and up using one of the Google Play download links below.
