  • A whole string of lows today!

Today was really odd as far as my BG levels are concerned. I ate nothing out of the ordinary, and if it did, I am usually quite good at controlling it. I had 3 eggs scrambled, a half pint of grapefruit, 3 pieces of whole grain toast with a pad of butter, and 2 shots of espresso for breakfast around 5:45, after waking at 5 with a BG level of 74, a number which is typical for me in the morning. I had a late lunch today (busy morning) and tested around 1:15 at which time my BG was 44! I had a normal lunch, a chicken salad (olive oil instead of mayo) and a spring greens salad, an orange, and a San Pellegrino mineral water, and bolused just enough, taking into account the amount needed to bring myself out of hypoglycemia and to ensure a good 110-120 BG before my 2 hour workout after work. I had my normal handful of almonds (unbolused) around 4:00, and went to the gym from work, starting my routine around 5:15, my BG being 121 beforehand. I got home around 7:30, and tested, and was 62, which is on the lower end of where I like to be pre-dinner. I made dinner, a sole filet, brussels sprouts, seasoned potatoes, and a bit of mango sorbet for dessert with some iced green tea. I tested at 10, and I was 48! I had some orange juice, just enough to cover the low, and changed for bed. I was having trouble sleeping, so I tested, and was 61! Had a few Triscuits, and now I have insomnia.
I’m not sure why today was such a whirlwind, but tomorrow I’m lowering my basal by 10% and changing my bolus ratio from 1 unit for every 10 carbs to 1 unit for ever 12. Stinks for tomorrow – I have to eat less to counter the extra stuff I ate today to fix these darn hypos!

Just got this via email when I was cleaning out my inbox on the plane ride – almost put me to tears.

  • So Christmas dinner will certainly be

interesting, and will leave us full for several days afterwards. I’m helping my uncle cook it this year after a gap in helping prepare last year. 6 courses, and none are low-carb friendly, not that I practice low carb. If Dr.Bernstein were dead, he’d be spinning in his grave.

    1) Antipasto – salamis, cheeses, olives, and breads amongst a few other peppers and meats
    2) Waldorf Salad – spring greens, razor sliced apples, walnuts, all in a home made mayo/ranch dressing
    3) Italian Wedding Soup – an Escarolle soup with hand made meat balls and hand made fusilli
    4) Pasta – Hand made shells stuffed with ricotta baked in home made ragu and hand made linguine with hand made meat balls cooked in a pot of the same ragu
    5) Prime Rib with fixins – cooked on a low heat for 8 hours and served with all the normal holiday sides
    6) Limoncello Tiramisu, Apple Strudel, and Amaretto cheesecake – all made at home.

I’m probably going to need an entire pump’s worth of insulin to cover this meal, and I’ll probably have no regrets doing so.
