I think it is redundant to describe the games on GOG.com as redundant. It is kinda obvious from their name (“Good Old Games”, for the uninitiated) that their games are old (by the standards of time and not gameplay) and that they are great. These games have aged gracefully and even now are pretty much the best the world of gaming has to offer. So when GOG.com launches a weekend sale of The Longest Journey and Sanitarium it is hard to rein in your excitement. These games are nothing short of AWESOME when it comes to the adventure genre (which is my second favorite genre – the first being its focused cousin, the RPG).

The Longest Journey: One very long game, this game also has one of the best stories around. As April, an 18 year-old art student, you will shift between the reality of Stark and the dream-world of Arcadia. Stepping into each of these realms through portals and doorways, you will have to maintain the balance of these two worlds through your actions. Beautifully written and executed, I bought this game as soon as I found out that it was on sale. Buy it!

Sanitarium: I remember playing a demo of this game when I was a kid (around ten years ago). I remember the opening sequence of the car crash and the insanity that the world of Sanitarium was. It was both terrifying and interesting at the same time – when you grapple with amnesia and see the horrors of the madhouse around you. Then you venture out into the town and… well it is insane. There are no other words for it. It’s an amazing game. Definitely worth a try.

World War 2 – Time of Wrath: Set in World War II, this game is a larger version of the classic Risk and puts you in charge of an entire Allied, Commitern or Axis nation, its economic and armed resources for a grand-scale warfare simulation. Buy World War 2 – Time of Wrath for $20.99!

With an increasing number of its users becoming quite vile about its shortcomings, Sony’s PlayStation wing has opened up a dedicated site called PlayStation.Blog Share. Here, fans can submit their own ideas and the community votes on the idea.

In its own words, this new “service” is dedicated to bringing certain ideas to life:-

PlayStation.Blog Share is a place to formally submit your best ideas on how we can improve all PlayStation products. It’s also a place where you can discover and vote on other people’s ideas, as well as communicate with us and other PlayStation fans about how to bring great ideas to life. I was pleasantly surprised to see a tweet that went to a completely new section of the PlayStation blog. With a little bit of snooping around it seemed that Sony was genuinely interested in hearing from its fans at long last.

Let’s hope Sony does act on the suggestions. I for one am hoping that the PSP dev kit is priced lower in the future!

The World Cyber Games (WCG) tournament’s Indian edition might be in deep trouble; longtime organizer Indiagames has decided to back out from the event, disgruntled at the lack of support from International Cyber Marketing (ICM). The Korean ICM is the main organizer of the WCG and is responsible for the funding and marketing of the e-sports events across boundaries.

ICM has allegedly not been funding Indiagames as much as it should, leading to the fund crisis that it apparently faces. Last year e-sports team ATE, the Counter Strike event’s finalists, did not attend the international finals in Chengdu because Indiagames had not funded their trip. How they could not is a mystery, for Indiagames is quite a prosperous mobile gaming portal with a serious developer base committed to making content for gamers across the nation.

However, Balu’s insider reports that ICM is the real culprit-

This year Indiagames put its foot down and refused to be part of the event unless proper funding to organize it at a good venue and without any delays was provided.

Nevertheless, it bodes ill for gamers in India. I remember a time when the WCG was organized in my city and I had gone to play Warcraft III, being the geeky teenager. The atmosphere of like-minded gamers, organizers and general public and the buzz of excitement whenever a great kill or strategy was executed was deliciously lapped up by my mind and have remained fresh over all these years. I do hope the WCG does occur this year as well for India one way or another.

Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game – the expansion of the acronym MMORPG immediately brings up the phrase World of Warcraft. Blizzard Entertainments massively popular online game evokes multitudes of emotions from its players and its haters. WoW has had two expansions with a third in the making. However, if you think of the game that defined the genre of MMORPG, it has to be EverQuest. Since its release in March 1999, the game has had sixteen expansions and is still going strong despite being an aged game. Steam has released a highly discounted starter pack of EverQuest for the jaw-dropping price of $2.50 for its 10th anniversary!

Though the graphics have deteriorated visibly, the game still retains its inherent playability (as seen by the vast amounts of people still playing this game) and with frequent expansion packs, this is Sony Online Entertainment’s cash cow. Nevertheless with twenty new zones and a 30-day free subscription to an EverQuest account, this is by far the best deal on EverQuest in quite a long time.

The monthly subscription for EverQuest is $14.99 and will be charged after the 30-day free subscription expires. There are also two unique non-tradable items available for Steam buyers – the Rusty Steam Valve and the Shroud of Steam. Talk about puns!

Steam seems intent on selling its half-decent games for dirt-cheap prices just so that people like me would just buy it and give it a try because “$2 doesn’t hurt”. Sniper Elite is a very realistic sniping game. Set in Berlin at the end of World War II, you play as a covert OSS Sniper intent on guarding Germany’s nuclear secrets from the Russians. This massively long game (you need a lot of patience) can be yours for $2 on Steam until the 22nd of March!

This elite game from Rebellion converts you into a sniper with totally realistic gameplay mechanics such as wind speed, breathing rate, gravity and bullet ballistics. With a first-person camera for shooting and third-person movement camera, this game creeps you out with its long-drawn maps and speedy conclusions after painfully slow preparation.

Though the graphics are dated and the game did not fare too well when it was released, the $2 price tag is tempting.

When Cavedog Entertainment created Total Annihilation in 1997, little did they know that they will be paving the way for games such as Supreme Commander, the development of the Spring engine and the entire 3D strategy genre altogether. Yes, Atari’s Total Annihilation was the first 3D top-down strategy game and runs fine in any resolution even now. The best thing about the Impulse release is that they will be releasing the game, the Core Contingency expansion and will be adding support for the multiplayer aspect as well as incorporating Impulse Reactor and other fan-made releases into the “official release”. The following line from Stardock pretty much sums it up.

In other words, we’re treating Total Annihilation similarly to a newly released title with ongoing updates wherever possible.

The graphics are an eyesore – but it does not matter if you really like the genre. The community for this really old game is still going strong with fan-made mods and additions. The Spring engine was a spin-off open source engine powering a great number of Total Annihilation mods and a few non-TA games as well.

You can grab Total Annihilation on Impulse for $9.99 and get in on the action immediately. if you are still unsure, you can download the demo and play it. Get ready to experience total warfare!

Remember that old news story about Worms: Reloaded? Team17 have started a Steam community for the game – with no beta in sight. My guess is that the company is trying to build up enough anticipation for the game that when it does release, crazed quantities of buying via Steam will comfortably carry them onward for a healthy profit.

That last statement comes as a direct result of this:

Posted in the Facebook page of Team17, this poll suggests a very high probability (hint, hint) of new screenshots that will be up in the page. Techie Buzz will post as soon as it has confirmation on this matter. (Read: When Team17 does post a few screenshots)

The developer’s other game Alien Breed: Impact also has its community page on Steam before launch or even a beta. Curious.

Deus Ex was probably the greatest first person shooter I have ever played (and that includes Fallout 3). It stuck to the norms of its genre while simultaneously creating the trend that would be followed by many games in the future. It was the forerunner of the amazing variety of FPSs we have today. The third game in the series, Deus Ex: Human Revolution will cover the renaissance of “transhuman revolution” – humanity’s first foray into cybernetics. The story is what is important and the teaser trailer gives away practically nothing.

Two words: CANNOT WAIT! However, knowing what a debacle the fan-filled lust for Invisible War was, it would be best if I do not have any hopes at all for this game. I merely hope it releases soon.

What happens when a “revolutionary new technology that lets you play any game online in your browser” meets embeddable PC gaming? According to Industry Gamers, it will fix the “broken” gaming industry. Gaikai, the only visible rival to OnLive will be partnering with InstantAction to deliver the most modern PC gaming experience right on your blog, website or Facebook profile!

Gaikai, with its trademark “Streaming Worlds” technology streams the game at full resolution and speed to your internet-enabled computer and lets you play these games without the requisite hardware or software. While this is pretty much the same thing that OnLive will be serving, Gaikai will be fee-free!

InstantAction, on the other hand, relies on small downloads and your computer’s processing power to play games. The result – an embedded flash-like game stream that is smooth enough without having a relatively fast internet connection.

So if you have a relatively fast PC, you can start playing Assassin’s Creed within minutes using InstantAction. However, if you are playing on a meager laptop, you can push in the Gaikai partnership to play the same game (probably from where you left off as well) in the laptop with the internet connection.

Pretty neat, if you ask me. However, it still has no effect on gamers in India because the servers are based in the US. Let’s see what the future holds!

Boldly tagged as “The future of video games”, OnLive is the newest “console” that has been all the rage around the world. The catch here is that it is a virtual console. OnLive is a subscription-based service that allows you to play the best games with the best graphics without having to purchase the hardware. How do they achieve that? Through the magic of broadband internet! Yes, the controller movements are sent to the server and low-latency video is fed back at “blinding fast” speeds to your TV, PC, Mac or your iPhone. Yes, your iPhone. In the near future you would be able to at least spectate a game with your iPhone while it is going on – with full graphics. Just imagine the power of this system!

This new cloud-based gaming service will be launching on the 17th of June. OnLive has also released pre-order forms. The monthly subscription fee is $14.95 – which for a month full of jaw-droppingly beautiful games is quite a small amount (although you still have to buy/subscribe to the games – which does kind of suck). If this does work, it will change the face of gaming forever – at least in the USA for the time being!

If you ask me, I don’t know which one is a crappier name: “PlayStation Move” or the “Wiimote”. But, let’s face it, game hardware developers have never been very imaginative about the names of their hardware. With the PlayStation Move, Sony has decided to fight the household behemoth called the Nintendo Wii. The Dual Shock 3 Sixaxis will be replaced by these two controllers shown below.

Yes, the left-hand controller features the D-pad, an analog stick and the circle button (curiously) while the right-hand controller has the face buttons, the second analog stick and that inappropriate-looking blue bulb thing. The PlayStation Move will be used in tandem with the PlayStation Eye.

GamerCenterOnline reports that Peter Dille, Sony Vice President, said that it will be very precise, being able to recognize both “fast and subtle” movements and will be available for a sub $100 price tag this fall.

We’re paving a path from the Wii household to the PS3 household; we’re planning to design games that target all genres and audiences, including core gamers, and we’re treating this like a virtual platform launch. This will be our biggest effort of the year.

I’ll be damned if I hear about a “core gamer” caught dead with those two in his hands. But let’s see what time brings with it.

Let’s start this off by saying, I really suck at titles. The title of this post does not in any way tell you how bizarre, great, awesome, crazy and brilliant Sleep is Death could be. It merely tells you that this two-player only game will take pre-orders for $9. That price fetches you two DRM-free copies of the game. Post-release, the game will sell for $14.

In a line, Sleep is Death is a “storytelling game for two players”. It is also pixelated – so do not read further if graphics are all you care about in a game. As Rock, Paper, Shotgun explains Sleep is Death

It’s a co-op roleplaying game. It’s 8-bit D&D. It’s an ad-hoc modding tool.

Better than that, there’s this typically indie explanation given by the author, Jason Rohrer, himself. Flick through it, get mesmerized by the amount of power this tiny game can give you, and pre-order it straightaway. If you still do not think he’s all that great, give Passage a try.
Sleep is Death will be released on the 16th of April, while those who have pre-ordered the game will be able to download it on the 9th of April – a whole week earlier!

If you still think a game needs graphics to survive, you need to fall off the Howrah Bridge during low tide.

It was a “somebody set up us the bomb” moment at Ubisoft. It could also have been an “I told you so!” moment from many anti-DRM factions. The diabolic DRM protection server of Ubisoft that it launched for two games (Assassin’s Creed II and Silent Hunter 5) had an outage for about six and a half hours, rendering both of them unplayable. Why? Because the games needed to be constantly authenticated via the DRM server while playing. So, denial of service from DRM server = no gameplay = sad (and eventually angered) gamers.

In a tweet, Ubisoft apologized for the outage, claiming that it was due to an attack by (possibly, haha) hackers.

Apologies to anyone who couldn’t play ACII or SH5 yesterday. Servers were attacked which limited service from 2:30pm to 9pm Paris time

However, this was only the beginning of their woes, as they handled yet another attack on their servers today, that affected those who were trying to log in. This just goes on to show that the hackers were definitely people against such outrageous DRM-protection on gaming.

As for me, I’ll just do a “bet t all” and not buy any games that involve such pathetic DRM protection.

For those who do not know anything about these games, I’d recommend Deus Ex, considering the fact that it is one of the greatest games of all time. Play it, soak in the story, and traverse a world full of gritty references, conspiracies and unmatched gameplay. I’d go as for to comment on the fact that many of today’s choice-based and storyline-focused FPSs have taken an idea from Deus Ex in one form or another. For its time, this game was unimaginably complex and full of rich characters and interactions. Its sequel, Deus Ex: Invisible War tried to continue the setting of the Deus Ex, but did not exceed its predecessor’s success. However, Invisible War has far more branching points than the previous game and has a non-linear gameplay that is still rich and fulfilling to play.

The tactical shooter Hitman: Codename 47 spawned a huge fan following and a movie to boot. Though the movie was nothing special, the series is. Playing as a contract killer, gamers are to murder a variety of people with realistic weapons and settings. With enough reality in it to make anyone know a little bit of the enigmatic world of assassins akin to those in the James Bond universe, the Hitman series is a great gift for those who like spy thrillers and conspiracies of secret organizations that send trained assassins to change the course of world history. Hitman: Silent Assassin and Hitman: Blood Money take the gameplay forward as you guide Codename 47 around the world in a variety of missions.

The adorable little platformer Toki Tori is now available on Steam for an unprecedented 50% off. The original price was $4.99, but Steam decided that the price would not make many users buy it. Why this unique blend of platforming and puzzle was not known to many people is a mystery, for the indie game is brilliant and worth every bit of the money you spend on it. This sale is only for a limited time and only on Steam.

In Toki Tori, players will have to fetch an egg in every level that is richly created in HD graphics. The twist in this seemingly innocuous game description introduces the puzzle genre; players will have to use a variety of tools to achieve the goal of fetching the egg. With names such as Freeze-o-matic and Telewarp, one can only guess at how unique the game would be!

With 80 levels spread across 4 worlds, this game will keep anyone occupied for hours. With sales such as these, Steam is definitely promoting the indie game scene and also letting gamers know about the wonderful world of indie gaming. LittleBigPlanet was perhaps the best platformer for the PlayStation 3. As Joystiq reports, “Three million copies,two million levels, and one Game of the Year edition later” Sony decided to acquire the small UK-based developer Media Molecule. Their sugar-coated website chirpily proclaimed the engagement with Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios (SCE WWS). With two BAFTAs, and over 90 other gaming awards, Media Molecule is on a roll as Sony has promised to further their franchise and also help develop newer titles.

Shuhei Yoshida, President, SCE Worldwide Studios had this to say about the interest of SCE WWS.

Since they burst onto the gaming scene, Media Molecule have proved to be a truly exciting and innovative studio, who have proved their world-class credentials with the creation of the incredible LittleBigPlanet. Time once again for the Steam Midweek Sale. This time it’s a sure-fire winner. Steam has released seven Indie games for a great price of $9.99. Yes, 7 games, 10 dollars. This steal of a deal has some great games in the bundle that, though not visually as pleasing as Braid, have addictive gameplay and unbelievable style. Did I mention that you will be getting seven games in the Midweek Madness sale of Steam? Oh, and each game is separately available for $2 as well. Go buy!

And what precisely are these games you ask? Well, the seven games are:-

1. Altitude: This little multiplayer dogfight-‘em-up has already stolen about 4 hours of my life in a day. Extremely addictive, choose from five different planes and play a game of plane-football, team deathmatch, free-for-all or team base demolition. Addictive after the first few minutes and an insane amount of fun. This one is a must buy (get it for $2 during the sale!) and goes above and beyond the expected.

2. Bob Came in Pieces: Bob has a problem. He has crashed on a strange planet and broken his ship into crazy pieces, and he is late for work. Rebuild Bob’s ship in any way you like as you use the ship and your custom attachments to solve physics-based puzzles in a beautifully crafted environment.

3. Bullet Candy: An arena shooter that is basically asteroids on steroids and acid. Psychedelic environments notwithstanding, this game is tons of fun with addictive gameplay and an excellent online leaderboard system. Also, Steam cheevios!

4. Galcon Fusion: Conquer the Galaxy with 38564 triangles! This simplistic galaxy conquest game has you controlling planets with their triangular ships. Though the game sounds simple, it gets progressively harder and has frantically large amounts of triangles on the screen at any time. A must buy, just because of its addictive nature.

5. Gridrunner Revolution: The next step in Gridrunner evolution. Featuring several game modes and several levels across 4 difficulty levels, this game promises to waste a large amount of your time. Also, procedurally generated backdrops and enemies make it a great companion for your Pink Floyd playlists.

6. Space Giraffe: Simplistically presented as a “shooter”, this game takes you to new heights (especially if you already are high). Flashy graphics synthesized in real time make every game of Space Giraffe unique.

7. Super Laser Racer: Geometric racer with weapons and a crazy techno soundtrack and very simple controls. I need say no more.

I bought this pack as soon as I found out. Do buy this pack if you liked more than a couple of games. You are helping independent devs with their work. Also, Steam achievements! (Ha)

The world’s largest computer expo is held every year in Hannover, Germany. This is the Centrum der Büro- und Informationstechnik, German for “Centre of Office and Information technology”. More commonly, this massive expo is known as the CeBIT. Having an exhibition area of around 450,000 sq. meters, this is the happening place where it concerns new developments in the IT industry.

Beginning from the 2nd of March 2010, CeBIT 2010 will stretch on until the 6th of March. This much hyped expo will leave a trail of innovations, novelty and future-norms in its wake.

Originally a part the Hannover Fair, CeBIT grew from its initial size of being part of a trade show to being a large fair on its own. It showcases the newest software, hardware and innovative applications of the aforementioned to set a standard of achievement in the future of the IT industry.

This time 3D displays will be the most sought after (especially after James Cameron’s Avatar), minus the ugly glasses. The new trend this year would be autostereoscopic 3D screens. Hamburg-based Seefront will be at the forefront of these matters this year.

But what if you wanted to see the entirety of the fair but could not make it to Hannover? Worry not, the CeBIT organizers will be broadcasting all the keynotes and online on their own channels.
