  • Some quick type 1 help please!

I’ve only been injecting insulin for about a month now, and I’m still getting used to things. I drove to work today without by bag, and now my meter and NovaLog are 30 miles away from me for the day!

Can/should I just eat a fatty/protein lunch without any carbs, if I can’t inject insulin? Or should I just skip the meal entirely? Or is this a bad enough situation where I should run to a close pharmacy, call my home pharmacy, and have them transfer the prescription?

Normal lunch time is in an hour, so any help is greatly appreciated!

  • MMA/Jujitsu

Hi all, I just did a search on this forum and had no hits on anyone training in MMA or Jujitsu, so I thought I would start a thread and see if there is anyone who trains.

I’ve only been taking classes for six months now, but I love it. I’m a white belt in the jujitsu, but I want to start competing in about six months or so.

I was taking meds for the first five months of my training, but things are a little trickier in practice now that I am injecting insulin. My temptation is to just carbo-load without an injection before practice, but I know it is better for me to strike a balance.

My workouts are between one hour and two hours, and fortunately I have not gone low yet. My greatest fear is that I’ll go low right about the time I’m being choked out while rolling, and I won’t get a chance to tap out as a result. I guess I’m wondering if anyone here does these kinds of workouts, and do you need to carb load, or does you liver dump enough glucose to get by?

The nicest part of the injecting for me is that I’m up 15 pounds since I started the insulin. Guys that used to throw me around can’t do that anymore, and it’s easier for me to maintian positional advantages, wrist control, etc with the extra weight. If I do ever compete, this will come bak to bite me in the a$$ when I try to cut weight, but for now I’m just happy not be frail anyore.

Has anyone here had to cut weight for any kind of match? If you also inject insulin, did your weight cut involve any cutting back on your insulin dosage?

  • Sports related question

Hey eveyone! I’m curious if there are any insulin injectors here that also participate in high intensity sports? Prior to my diagnosis, I did a lot of marathons and triathalons. I have cut back on that recently, but defintely want to get back into it this spring. I am also now very into MMA and jujitsu, which generally consists on 30 minutes of practicing techniques, and 45 minutes of rolling (fighting with a partner without punching).

I was dx 6 months ago, but started with my insulin only 3 weeks ago. I am generally paranoid about going low, but extremely so during practice. My strategy for dealing with that so far has been to carbo-load prior and during practice with gatorade and sports drinks. I know that this is less than ideal, but I have no idea how much I should reduce my insulin, how much I should drink sports drink, how much my liver can naturally keep my BG high, etc.

I feel like it doesn’t help being that MMA is a tough guy sport. They don’t really give me time to sit there and test myself mid-practice. Not that I’ve even told them what my diabetes issues are. It just doesn’t seem like the right forum to even bring it up. Has anyone here had a sit down with their coach about practice and game strategies for dealing with their D?
