  • Truly a Good Day for Me

I had a voice mail this morning from my doctor’s office. The call was regarding my blood results. The nurse said that I had an A1c of 5.2%. Back in November at diagnosis it was 8.5%. Needless to say I am extremely happy that I am now in the 5% club!
The nurse said the rest of the results look good too. I won’t know those numbers until I go in next week but expect my Triglycirides and cholestorol to be good too.

I could not have done it alone, I owe it all to the inspiration provide by, if I may so call you, my friends on this forum. Thank you.

  • On the Right Track–I hope

It has been two months since I have been diagnosed as a Type II. I thought I would share my accomplishments and goals to see if I am on the right track. Advice or suggestions will be appreciated.

Vital statistics: Male, 48 year old, 6 foot tall
At diagnosis I weighed 230 pounds with and A1C of 8.5. My BMI was 31.2. I was mainly sedentary. Lipids, except for triglycerides, controlled to normal with medication.

As of today, I weigh 201 pounds and have an average BG reading of 97. My BMI is 27.3. I currently walk approximately 2 hours a day. My average daily carb consumption is 20 – 30. Through shear negligence, I have paid no attention to my daily caloric intake.

My final goal is to weigh 175 pounds, a BMI of 23.7, and an average A1C in the low 5s. I want to maintain a daily carb consumption of 30.

I attribute the weight loss I achieved so far as due to the walking and the reduction of carbs. With hind sight I also realize that there is an associated weight loss due to the reduction of calories.

Classified as obese at the start of this journey I was not too worried about the rapid weight loss as I felt I was burning excess fat off. Two months later I am growing concerned that at a rate of over three pounds a week that I am losing the weight too fast.

To slow the rate of weight loss I intend to increase my caloric intake by adding more no/low carb foods such as olive oil and proteins. What I worry about is that my lipid profile is going to skyrocket.

 My questions are: Is it safe to continue at my current rate of weight loss until I achieve my final goal? Will my lipids soar if I add in more fats and proteins? Any recommendations as to high caloric but low/no carb foods?

  • Holiday Blues

Another Christmas but the first with diabetes. Although I did not over-induldge myself in foods my BG readings were higher than they have been up until now. I thought hard about what could have raised them and realized that feeling blue helped contribute.

I just wonder how long it will be before the BG levels drop down again. I figure a week or maybe less.:o
