After rounding up the test operation the TriHyBus, from this Spring a fuel cell triple hybrid bus will provide regular operations in and around the city of Neratovice in the Czech Republic. In addition to the fuel cell, the bus will also use batteries for storing energy during braking, and vice versa to support the fuel cell during the energy-intensive modes of operation. This bus will be refuelled at thethe first hydrogen station in the Czech Republic.

Greenland´s first hydrogen plant for renewable energy storage inaugurated
The three year old Andreas Anuik Hardenberg, had the honor of placing the key in the lock of the first hydrogen plant in Greenland. It is the national energy company, Nukissiorfiit, that has procured the mobile plant which is now installed and in operation outside the company headquarter in Nuuk, the capital of the country. The plant has been developed by H2 Logic A/S from Denmark. Purpose of this test plant is to gain experiences with production, distribution and use of hydrogen as energy carrier and investigate the opportunities for increasing the renewable energy share in the energy production from Nukissiorfiit. Today around 60% of the energy – electricity and heat – that Nukissiorfiit produces for the entire country comes from hydro power. The remainder is produced by use of expensive and polluting diesel. With a continuous increase of production capacities of hydro power plants in combination with hydrogen and fuel cells, it may in the long term be possible for Nukissiorfiit to completely avoid use of diesel for electricity and heat production. Hydrogen could then also be used as fuel for the transportation sector and using the extra potential of hydro power. Even the export of hydrogen may be a long term opportunity.

Royal Mail has announced plans to begin testing two hydrogen vans
The Royal Mail has announced plans to begin testing two hydrogen-powered vans at Stornaway in Scotland.
The six-month trial will feature Transit-based vans with a back-up of a 2.3-litre petrol engine, a supercharger, and either two or three hydrogen tanks, which provide a range of about 85 miles. -
German-Canadian fuel cell collaboration in North Rhine Westphalia
Christa Thoben, Minister for Economy of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Canadian Vice consul Henri Proulx signed an agreement of collaboration between the Zentrum für Brennstoffzellentechnik (ZBT), of the University of Duisburg-Essen, and the Canadian research institute NRC-IFCI (National Research Council Canada – Institute for Fuel Cell Innovation) on joint technology development for system components and operation in the 5 – 10 kWel class for mobile applications with battery hybrid technologies. This collaboration, HiPerLoCo is in line with the electro mobility strategy of the energy region North Rhine-Westphalia in which battery and fuel cell are playing a complementary role. Other joint activites will cover optimisation of high quality power supply.

Another Hydrogen Olympics!
During the 2010 Olympic and Paralympics Winter Games British Columbia operated the worlds largest fleet of fuel cell powered buses in a single location to date. Where no car is allowed hydrogen busses are. BC Transit low – floor hydrogen buses have a range of 450 – 500 kilometers and a top speed of 90 km/h. Air Liquide installed a hydrogen refuelling station in Vancouver for this occasion.
Comparing to the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics the 2010 Olympic Games are greener than ever. Still the first Olympic Games that used hydrogen vehicles were in Turin in 2006. The 2006 Fiat Panda Hydrogen Concept was presented there, and again Air Liquide provided the supply for the hydrogen refuelling station. The future looks bright for hydrogen at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games that will be held in London. A taxi cab that runs on the latest hydrogen fuel cell technology is being developed with the aim of being ready for full road trials in time for the 2012 Olympics. London’s deputy mayor, Kit Malthouse, announced last year that by 2012 there would be six hydrogen refuelloing stations in the capital. He said he wanted around 20-50 taxis in operation by then, as well as 150 hydrogen-powered buses. In addition to the ITM Power, who is developing engineering solutions for low-cost low-carbon hydrogen generation refueling stations, Air Products will dispense hydrogen fuel from mobile trailers. The Air Products mobile refueling units will be parked at local gas stations around London providing compressed H2 gas for the black taxis during the 2012 Olympics.
