  • Is this Diabetes? Or Pre?

I’m a 29 YO female, height 5’8", weight 139. I’ve had insulin dependent GD twice and a normal GTT 12 months ago. In the last few months, I’ve had significant fatigue and thirst after eating. I started checking my sugars whenever I felt really ill, and have been running levels anywhere from 140 to 240, randomly.

My GP ordered another GTT and I know my results.

    Fasting: 121
    1 hr: 238
    2 hr: 170

I know the fasting and 2 hr do not officially put me in the diabetic range, and my doc had in passing before mentioned that a random sugar would need to be over 250 to be diabetic. I’ve never hit 250, only in the 240’s. However, this still seems REALLY close to be quibbling about points.

My doc is out of the office until Monday, so while I know my numbers, I don’t know his interpretation. I suppose I’m afraid he’s going to blow it off because the numbers aren’t high enough. He did walk by and saw the fasting and commented, "looks like impaired fasting glucose. . . I guess we’ll be tightening up the old diet and exercise." He has not seen the other two results.

I guess I’m concerned because I’m thin and athletic (in training season I run an average of 40 miles a week). I certainly could tweek the diet to cut carbs, but I just don’t think I need to lose weight. Just this side of a year ago, he had me put on 25 lbs because I was too thin (at 115 lbs) and 11% body fat, and it had put me in something called "sick euthyroid syndrome".

I want to take this very seriously, and while I’d rather gouge my ear than have diabetes, if this is the path I’m on, I’m afraid a lack of an official diagnosis will limit my ability to obtain vigorous treatment or insurance coverage for test strips, etc.

So, from the perspective of experience, what do y’all think?
