  • Sarah Palin in Peoria

  • Obama and Goldman Sachs: backgrounder

WASHINGTON–The Securities and Exchange Commission sued Goldman Sachs and one of its vice presidents for allegedly misstating and omitting key facts about a financal instrument called a collateralized debt obligation.

Here’s what I wrote on Oct. 8, 2008 about a 2007 private dinner then Sen. Barack Obama had with Goldman Sachs executives with Tom Brokaw:

WASHINGTON–On May 3, 2007, Barack Obama attended an event at the Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan that was not on his public schedule and is only now surfacing–a private dinner for Goldman Sachs traders with a discussion on issues moderated for the Wall Street firm by NBC’s Tom Brokaw.

Brokaw is the moderator of Tuesday’s second presidential debate between Obama and John McCain at Belmont University in Nashville, Tenn.

The dinner was not a fund-raiser for Obama, then in the early stages of his Democratic primary campaign launched February, 2007. Brokaw interviewed Obama for about 45 minutes on mostly international issues. Brokaw received an honorarium, donated to charity. The Obama campaign called the event a “moderated conversation” when I inquired on Monday.

Brokaw’s appearance was arranged through Goldman Sachs–not the Obama campaign. It was the only session Brokaw did for Goldman. Brokaw’s honorarium was given to a charity.

The employees of Goldman Sachs collectively would go on to become the top contributors to the Obama campaign.

Statement by Press Secretary Robert Gibbs

On Thursday, President Obama will travel to New York City where he will deliver remarks at Cooper Union on Wall Street reform. Almost two years after the crisis hit and almost one year after the Administration first laid out a detailed plan for holding Wall Street accountable and protecting consumers, he will call for swift Senate action. The crisis has already wiped out trillions of dollars in family wealth and cost over 8 million jobs. The President will also remind Americans what is at stake if we do not move forward with changing the rules of the road as a part of a strong Wall Street reform package.

More details will be announced when they become available.

  • Mexico’s youth “movers and shakers” meeet with Michelle Obama

MEXICO CITY — “These are the movers and shakers here in Mexico,” first lady Michelle Obama said as she sat down Thursday morning with a dozen student leaders from all parts of the nation at a former colonial-era hacienda here.
Most of the group had some extraordinary accomplishment in helping the underserved or the unfortunate, whether in education, health or the environment.

Billed as a roundtable discussion, there was no cross talk as Mrs. Obama worked her way around the rectangular table as the six men and six women each explained their special projects. Mrs. Obama’s offering for the group was her recounting of how, when she was coming up, during meetings, she would often find herself as the only African American at the table.

Maritza Aurora Morales Casanova — an environmental educator — told Mrs. Obama how hard it was to get attention for environmental issues and commented on gender roles.

“Behind a great man, there’s a great woman. I don’t believe that, I believe beside every great man there is a great woman,” she said.

“What would have happened to Diego Rivera without Frida Kahlo?” she asked, speaking of the famous Mexican artists. Or Pierre Currie without Marie, she said of the French physicists. Or, turning to the U.S., Bill Clinton “without Hillary?”

Mrs. Obama seemed touched. “What you have to know is you are the voices of inspiration,” she said. “You don’t need Bill Gates or Michelle Obama, although that’s nice sometimes. Young people in your communities are relating to you.”

This was Mrs. Obama’s last public event of her first solo official international swing that started Tuesday with her stop in Haiti. Mrs. Obama lifted off from Mexico City at noon en route to San Diego.

    Pool report by Lynn Sweet

MEXICO CITY–First Lady Michelle Obama wrapped up her first solo international official trip on Thursday, with wheels up from Benito Juarez International Airport at 12:01 p.m. local time, en route to San Diego, Calif.

Mrs. Obama’s motocade zipped from La Hacienda de los Morales to the airport on empty highways, arriving at 11:30 a.m. and proceeding to the Presidential Hangar.

A few minutes later, at 11:36 a.m., Mrs. Obama emerged from the terminal, accompanied by a Mexican protocol deputy, to be serenaded by a waiting group of boys and girls. She was wearing the same white pants and ivory jacket she had on during her morning roundtable with a group of a dozen Mexican youth leaders. She listened with cupped hands and clapped when the kids were done with two songs, in English and Spanish.

The songsters waving U.S. and Mexican flags were members of the Christel House choir, called the Polyphonic Chorus, a U.S. Embassy official told your pooler. The adorable children wore uniforms–blue jumpers and tan shirts for girls, blue sleeveless sweaters, blue pants and tan shirts for boys. Christel House was founded to help impoverished children.

Mrs. Obama’s departure greeters met her at the foot of the stairs to her aircraft: those identified by your pooler: U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Carlos Pascual; Ambassador Julian Ventura, Undersecretary for North America; Mexican Ambassador to the U.S. Arturo Sarukhan and his wife, Veronica Valencia-Sarukhan.

She climbed the stairs alone. At the top of the stairway she paused, looked back and entered the plane.

Today, the President released his 2009 federal income and gift tax returns. He and the First Lady filed their income tax return jointly and reported an adjusted gross income of $ 5,505,409. The vast majority of the family’s 2009 income is the proceeds from the sale of the President’s books. The Obamas paid $1,792,414 in federal income tax. The President and First Lady also reported donating $329,100 to 40 different charities. The largest reported gifts to charity were $50,000 contributions to CARE and the United Negro College Fund. In addition, the President donated his $1.4 million Nobel Prize funds to 10 charities. The President and First Lady also released their Illinois income tax return and reported paying $163,303 in state income taxes.

The President and First Lady’s federal and state tax returns
The Internal Revenue Code provides that if the recipient of the Nobel Prize directs the Nobel Committee to donate the prize income directly to charity, as the President did, the recipient does not have to recognize the prize as income on his federal income tax return. The President is not permitted to take a charitable deduction on the value of the prize since it is not included in his income.

The Vice President and Dr. Jill Biden also released their 2009 federal income tax returns, as well as state income tax returns for both Delaware and Virginia. They filed joint federal and Delaware income tax returns. Dr. Biden filed a separate non-resident tax return for the state of Virginia. Together, they reported an adjusted gross income of $333,182. The Bidens paid $71,147 in federal income taxes for 2009. They paid $12,420 in Delaware income taxes and $1,477 in Virginia income taxes. The Bidens contributed $4,820 to charity, in both monetary and in-kind donations.

  • Michelle Obama meets young Mexican social activists; lessons in passion and patience

michelle mex 8.JPG (photo by Lynn Sweet)

MEXICO CITY–First Lady Michelle Obama on Thursday morning hosted a roundtable discussion with a dozen young Mexicans from around the country, each telling their own personal, passionate story about how they are trying to help their communities.

Mrs. Obama was seated around a long table at the historic La Hacienda de los Morales, a restaurant and event venue dating back to the Spanish here in the 16th century. A U.S. State Department translator perched next to Mrs. Obama translated as the “stories” were told in Spanish. The press was provided simul-cast translations via a woman sitting at a table in a glass booth; transmitted via wireless devices with ear phones.

Said Mrs. Obama, who seemed taken with the personal stories: There is “power in their voices,” she told the group. The U.S. Embassy in Mexico assembled the panel.

The don’t need Bill Gates, they don’t need Michelle Obama, Mrs. Obama said in praise.

Mrs. Obama, who flew from Washington to Haiti on Tuesday in her first solo international swing to tour the destruction from the Jan. 12 earthquake, said her parting thought to young people: learn the virtue of patience.

“When I went to Haiti, the only thing that happens in an instant is destruction.”

Mrs. Obama is wrapping up her Mexico stay–she landed her Tuesday night–doing interviews with Telemundo and Univision. From there, her motorcade zips to the airport to fly to San Diego, where she shifts back to her signature domestic program, combating childhood obesity in the California event.

From East Wing guidance: First Lady Michelle Obama will visit a community farm that is supported by the California Endowment’s Building Healthy Communities Initiative.

The Building Healthy Communities Initiative is targeting 14 geographically diverse areas across the state with significant, strategic, and sustained investments to transform these underserved communities into healthy communities.

The First Lady will meet with community farmers and volunteers, tour the garden, and give remarks.

She is expected to return to Washington Thursday night.

  • In Mexico, Michelle Obama debuts “youth engagement” agenda

MEXICO CITY–First Lady Michelle Obama debuted on Wednesday her international “youth engagement” agenda during a speech to college and high school students here. In an interview with six print reporters–counting me–Mrs. Obama said she wasn’t sure how her youth agenda will develop. Read my column on Mrs. Obama’s appeal to Mexico’s youth here.

  • Michelle Obama, in Mexico reflects on Pilsen, Little Village and Goldblatts!

MEXICO CITY — On her first trip to Mexico, first lady Michelle Obama on Wednesday talked about Chicago’s Mexican-American communities in Pilsen, Little Village and the Southeast Side.

“Growing up in Chicago on the South Side, I lived next to one of the largest Mexican-American communities in the city,” Mrs. Obama said in a session with six print journalists following her in Mexico.

We’re on the campus of Universidad Iberoamericana, and Mrs. Obama just delivered a speech to college and high school students to inspire them to help others. She ended her address with the rousing battle cry of President Obama’s 2008 presidential quest — “Si, se puede — Yes we can” — but the crowd did not light up the way a U.S. audience would because I just don’t think they got the reference to either the campaign or to the phrase, originated by Cesar Chavez, the labor leader.

Mrs. Obama did not mention in her speech the cross-border drug problem that leaders in Mexico and the United States are grappling with. In Mexico, drug violence affects people under 30 the most.

She did discuss programs and strategies to reduce drug use in a morning private meeting with Mexican first lady Margarita Zavala, held in Los Pinos, the Mexican presidential residence.

Asked to comment on the drug war, Mrs. Obama, raised at 7436 S. Euclid, mentioned her South Side roots and seemed to want to throw the spotlight off the explosion of murders on the Mexican side of the border with the United States, blamed on feuding drug cartels.

“Drug violence exists on the South Side of Chicago, in L.A., you name any urban and rural environment,” she said.

Mrs. Obama was asked about her favorite Mexican neighborhood in Chicago, and the question spurred Mrs. Obama — in Mexico at this point less than 24 hours — to compare and contrast her impressions so far.

“Well, Pilsen, Little Village, is one of the favorites because that’s where you feel like you’re in a different neighborhood,” Mrs. Obama said.

Mrs. Obama was referring to two different Chicago communities, Pilsen, along 18th Street on the Near West Side, and Little Village, in South Lawndale.

In any case, a Mexican neighborhood in Chicago is not the same as Mexico City.

“It is very different from being here in Mexico City because this is where … the full culture of Mexico is on display. … The architecture in this city is bold, it’s modern, it’s colorful in ways that can’t be expressed in just a neighborhood; you know, one of, you know, 72 community areas in Chicago,” she said.

FOOTNOTE: I asked Mrs. Obama to clarify where on the Southeast Side of Chicago she was talking about — 91st and Commercial, she said.

“Ninety-first, where Goldblatt’s used to be,” she said, laughing. “We used to shop there.”

Said Mrs. Obama, “That was like the big shopping trip.”

MEXICO CITY–At a university here, First Lady Michelle Obama on Wednesday urged a group of Mexican students to “ensure that other young people have the opportunities they deserve,” a variation of a theme that is a standard in most of her speeches.

She spoke at the Universidad Iberamericana in the Santa Fe area of the city, near high rises housing corporate headquarters, condos and a U.S-style shopping mall. About 2,000 invited students–from a variety of high schools and other universities– crowded into courtyard at the Jesuit School, decorated with giant Mexican and U.S. flags.
