  • Halo concept vehicle designed for extreme energy efficiency

    halo concept vehicle

Nicholas Womeldorff, an industrial designer, defines the future of mobility in terms of his Halo concept vehicle. The two-wheel concept vehicle has been shaped to provide maximum efficiency by considering aerodynamics and frictional force. It is a front-wheel drive vehicle that utilizes an intense magnetic field generated by the large loop passing through the front wheel. The field spins the wheel for forward and reverse movement as well as rotates the axis in order to steer. The use of a magnetic field cuts down on friction, making it an extremely energy-efficient vehicle.

  • Peregrine Falcon electric concept bike for urban commuters

    peregrine falcon electric bike_4

Designer Gabriel Tam has tried to deviate from the conventional bike designs in his electric bike concept, the Peregrine Falcon, of course, named after its inspiration. We don’t have much to comment about the efficiency of bike and its technical specifications. However, Gabriel has synthesized his interpretation of the classic cafe racer from the ’60s and a sense of modernism into his design.

  • Heliotropis – A solar powered kinetic sculpture

    heliotropis

The environmentalists and scientists from all over the world are busy researching to develop methods to avoid the energy crisis as well as to fight the problem of gradually growing carbon emissions. However, there is one more aspect that is an integral part of human life – aesthetics. To preserve this very aspect in a green way, Beth Deutch and Larry Rubin in Rumson have designed a charming solar powered kinetic sculpture that they hope to complete in 2010.

  • Plan for the longest ethanol pipeline across eastern U.S. unveiled

    ethanol pipeline

POET Ethanol Products, based in South Dakota, and Magellan Midstream Partners in Texas has proposed a 1,800-mile-long pipeline project. Running across Indiana and north of Indianapolis, the pipeline will carry ethanol to the markets to be used as fuel. This $4 billion project will be the longest ever built in U.S. and will carry 3.6 billion gallons a year. The fuel will be produced in the Midwest from corn and cellulose products. This project will not only provide green fuel in the market, but also provide employment to thousands of workers. It is expected that the grand project will require about 80,000 jobs in construction only.

  • Soybean Genome Analysis to improve production of biodiesel

    soybeangenom

A team of researchers has achieved a milestone in soybean research that could enhance its use for the production of biodiesel. Soybean, which is considered one of the most important sources of protein and oil, has now become the first legume species with a published complete draft genome sequence. As of now, researcher have determined the genetic code, they can expand their reference to more than 20,000 legume species and could access the evolutionary innovation of nitrogen-fixing bacteria.

  • Alpha Energy completes largest solar carport in the US

    solar carport_2

A massive 1MV grid-connected solar power system is ready to supply power to the auction facility in Bordentown, NJ. The system is said to be the largest solar powered carport structure in the United States. Constructed in an area of 13,000 square meters, this carport includes 5,880 solar panels of 170W capacity. The whole panel structure is connected through 11 separate inverters to ensure that removing a single solar array does not disturb the entire energy supply. This means even in situations when one of the solar arrays is unable to supply electricity, the rest of the system can supply 90% of the total energy to the carport.

  • New Li-ion Battery Cell for PHEVs from Hitachi

    li ion battery cell

Hitachi and Hitachi Vehicle Energy Ltd. is expected to ship the samples of their newly developed lithium-ion battery to automobile manufacturers in Japan and overseas in the spring of 2010. This new product has more energy and output density as compared to others of its genre. Up to now, batteries manufactured from the same manufacturer were less efficient in output. Now, with the development of this new battery the capacity has been increased up to 25 Ah, which is 4-5 times more than the earlier ones. It boasts Energy density of 120 Wh/kg and power density of 2,400 W/kg. To prevent the internal short circuit, a heat-resistant has been incorporated. It provides safety, especially when these batteries are being used in automotive applications.

  • Artificial leaf to generate hydrogen

    leaf

Scientists have once again turned towards nature for inspiration to enhance their technologies. Now they are trying to learn the way leaves harness and utilize sun’s energy. Scientists have created an artificial leaf which they said can split the water to generate hydrogen. This is not the first time that such an attempt has been made. However, this experiment differs due the fact that it tries to mimic photosynthesis by copying the elaborate architectures of green leaves instead of modifying or mimicking the molecules directly involved in splitting hydrogen. Scientists assume this method to be more efficient in their efforts to reduce carbon emissions and it will be possible to create a miniature hydrogen factory by using this technology.
