  • Roger’s Navigator for Android

Hey Canadian’s, depressed you can’t find a great turn-by-turn app because Google Navigation isn’t available yet? Rogers has just announced Rogers Navigator(TM) for Android. Rogers also recently announced Rogers Navigator(TM) for iPhone which was a re-branded version of the Telenav app and is also the same thing for the Android. With many years of experience and well known to many Canadians this application is a no-brainer if you are looking for turn-by-turn navigation with must-have and useful features such as 2D/3D maps, real-time traffic updates, one-touch reroute, business search, day and night modes, and pre-planned trips. As a premium application this service will cost you $4.99 per month on top of your regular wireless charges. The application is said to be on the market now, but as of yet I am unable to see it myself.

  • OnStar + Google = Volt 2.0

Andy never looked so good rolling in a Chevrolet Volt! General Motors and OnStar have just announced the impending release of their latest Volt app which will be available across a wide variety of smartphones. Using the power and functionality of the Android platform Chevrolet has created an application that takes advantage of Google Maps, Voice Recognition, and direct communication with the car via text message or email. When you hear that Android is taking over you may have thought they meant they are outselling a company that is named after a fruit, but not the case as we now see. Android is now the best invention since the universal remote with everything it can do these days.

OnStar with GM will be showing off what they have been working on at the upcoming 2010 Google I/O Conference. The features you will see being demoed are as follows.

    • Charge status display – plugged in or not and voltage (120V or 240V)
    • Flexibility to “Charge Now” or schedule charge timing
    • Display percentage of battery charge level, electric and total ranges
    • Ability to manually set grid-friendly charge mode for off-peak times when electricity rates are lowest
    • Send text or email notifications for charge reminders, interruptions and full charge
    • Display miles per gallon, electric only miles, and odometer readings
    • Shows miles per gallon, EV miles and miles driven for last trip and lifetime
    • Remotely start the vehicle to pre-condition the interior temperature
    • Use Google Maps to send directions to the Volt so it can be pre-loaded before you even arrive in the drivers seat
    • Have the choice of using either OnStar Navigation or Google turn-by-turn Navigation
    • View your cars current location via GPS at all times

A real slick car with some real slick features. The app is currently available for Motorola Droid, Blackberry Storm, and iPhone. Check out this video of it on the Motorola Droid:

  • Rogers Social View – What’s In A Name

Most recent Canadian Mobile news has rumoured a new service called Social View from Rogers Wireless. Up until now, no one could figure out what it was, although we all could safely assume it had something to do with amalgamation of social networking services. Here is the official description:

a built-in feature of these exclusive smartphones that brings together, in real-time, your contacts’ updates from popular social networks like Facebook, Twitter and MySpace. It also includes a display of recent traditional communications such as texts, calls and instant messages from your contacts. Right in the contact list!

Here’s the breakdown. Social View is a feature that Android devices already have, it now just has a name. Social View is different on all devices and in the future will not be limited to Android devices. For example on the LG Eve, social view is LinkBook, on the HTC Magic, it’s Sense UI’s phonebook app, and on The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, it’s TimeScape. While this may seem very trivial that they are deciding to give a name to a type of app, I think it will not only peek people’s curiosity, it will also give Android a competitive edge over the iPhone. Why? Because the iPhone can not do this!

The phones that this functionality is currently built into are the LG Eve, HTC Magic, Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, and both the soon to be released Motorola Quench and Acer Liquid E. It should also be noted that because each phone has a different Social View experience, they will not all support every social networking service.

Along with this announcement of Social View comes 3 new plans that nicely compliment it. These new plans are based around social networking and are not for all devices. The first of these plans is the “Unlimited Social Addict Plan” which is directed towards Social View phones, although it is available for other smartphones excluding Blackberry. The second is the “Unlimited Socialite Plan” for feature phones and is an entry level plan. Last is the “Unlimited Social Master Plan” which also is directed at feature phones and sits right above the Socialite Plan. Unfortunately no pricing or other details have been given about these plans as of yet. It is assumed that once Rogers makes the official release and announcement of Social View these new plans will be riding it’s coat tails.

What do you think of this move by Rogers? Do you already use these types of apps on your device?

  • Acer Liquid E Confirmed On Rogers – Coming Soon

Announced months back, it now looks like Rogers will soon be releasing the Acer Liquid E. There is no exact release date known yet but we will be sure to let you know as soon as we do! It isn’t the prettiest Android phone, but we have seen that with Android it’s usually the less eye-appealing ones that get all the brains and brawn. The phone packs the following:

    • 3.5 inch touchscreen
    • 768MHz Snapdragon processor
    • 5MP camera
    • 7.2 Mbps 3G and WiFi
    • Standard Android 2.1

Pictured above is Roger’s set-up instructions for Facebook on the Acer Liquid E. Rogers has recently announced a built-in feature called Social View, which is just a name for phones that sync social networking data to the device’s standard contact book for easy access. The Acer Liquid E will include this Social View ability.

  • Sony X10 The GutReactionReview(TM)

    By: Michael Schmidt

Okay, I’ve had the X10 since 8:30pm last night now (but I had to sleep some) so here is my initial GutReactionReview™. This will be quick, and mostly point form. It’s possible that any “problems” I list might have solutions, but the whole point is what the reaction of a first-time smart-phone buyer might be, especially if they aren’t too savvy, or know how/where to solve these things on their own.

    • Formfactor: The X10 is a “big” phone in your hand. It’s larger than the Magic for sure, but comparable to the iPhone. It “feels” big in my hand, a lot closer to the feel of the Palm TX PDA I used to use. Some people won’t like this, and it is taking some getting used to, but I like having a lot of screen real-estate. Despite its size, however, it’s surprisingly light! The Xperia X10 looks like a nice phone. while aesthetics are subjective (like art and music) I think most people will like having and showing off this phone. It has very nice lines, a beautiful big screen, and classy/modern-looking silver/steel highlights. The back cover has a nice slightly “rubberized” (is that the best word?) feel to it. It’s a little odd having the volume button on the right side, but probably only because the volume rocker is on the left side of my Magic, and I’m used to it. So, really this is my problem, and not the X10.

    • Screen: Did I mention the screen is nice and BIG! Great for watching video and looking at photos. If you look close though you can see that the icons aren’t actually “sharp”. They look just the slightest bit “fuzzy” around the edges, but only if you look close. However, I did notice it, so others might as well.

    • Power Button: The power button, at the top, is used not only to power the phone on and off, but to bring it out of sleep mode. I am used to hitting the Menu button on my Magic to do this, and it feels kind of awkward to me. The way you hold these phones when you are using them for anything other than making calls, it seems more intuitive to press one of the hard buttons on the front of the phone.

    • User Experience: This is sort of a catch all area. The X10 comes with some widgets preloaded on the screen (only 3 home screens. C’mon guys, give us more!) including a widget for TimeScape™, and a very nice digital clock widget. Personally I find the “unlock’ sliding graphic kinda of lame, but some people like it. Just a personal thing, I prefer pressing the hard button on my phone to unlock, but I can see how an actual software on-screen onlock can actually be more secure since you can’t accidentally unlock it. There are some minor annoyances throughout, but I will cover them all at a later date.

    • Keyboard: The X10’s on-screen keyboard is HORRIBLE!!! Trying to figure it out was driving me crazy, especially to get special characters. The keys are smaller then the keys on the Magic’s onscreen keyboard but just enough to make it even harder to see what you are pressing, and to type quickly. To get certain characters, like a comma or exclamation mark, you have to double-tap the period or question mark keys, and if you don’t do it just right, you get two periods or question marks. Unlike the Magic keyboard, there is no key to “clear” the keyboard from the screen. Instead you have to press the Back button on the phone. I had to figure this out on my own. Also, when you are typing the phone suggests so many different words as you type (some which have NO resemblance to the word you are typing) that it is unnecessarily overwhelming. Also hard to see, since they are little grey rectangles with small black font. Strangely, there are settings available for the default Android keyboard in the phone settings, but I could not find anywhere to actually disable the X10’s keyboard in favour of the default Android keyboard! Lame!

    • Camera: It’s 8 MP, and has a flash. Except, just don’t rely too much on the flash. I haven’t tested the flash myself yet, but Puleen tried it on his demo unit last night, and it didn’t seem very useful. Also, rather un-intuitively, to take a photo you depress the “camera button” (on the side) half-way to focus, and the rest of the way to take the photo. The problem is, when you have pressed it half-way, it feels like you’ve pressed it as far as you can go. It can actually be pressed farther in (harder) but it’s not easy to realize. I gave the phone to two “common users” (both of whom have iPhones), and even after I told them about pressing the shutter button harder to actually take a photo they kept saying “I have, it won’t go farther”. They had to press it really far in to get it to work, and were surprised by it. If you didn’t figure it out, you’d think the camera wasn’t working. I haven’t had time to do any indepth testing yet, but I will put the camera through its paces and post some of the photos I get.

    • TimeScape™: An interesting feature. TimeScape is a visual display of your Facebook, Twitter, Email (but not Gmail?!), Photos, Missed Calls, Music, and text Messages. Each one has its own screen (swipe left and right to get at them) and each is represented in a “tower” of floating “card” that you can swipe up or down. You set up your Twitter and FB accounts, and then set the frequency that they will refresh. Kind of annoying… it doesn’t seem there is a way to send a Tweet or an FB post from TimeScape directly. Instead you tap on the individual “card” to which you want to respond and it will open the browser and load the mobile page for twitter or FB. I wish I could tweet directly from TimeScape. TimeScape can also be set as your default “Home” screen (or skin, if you will) so that those floating Twitter, FB, or other feed towers are always on screen. This can be cool for people who are all about the social media thing, but that’s not me. Also, the images used in the Twitter and FB tower feeds seem rather “low-res” and not very impressive.

    • MediaScape™: MediaScape is very smooth, very slick, and very cool. It’s not even a contest between MediaScape and the default HTC gallery or music player (I don’t have Sense UI, so I can’t compare to that). This is something I would enjoy showing other people when pulling out this phone! Two thumbs up. More on MediaScape when I have time. (For those who don’t know, MediaScape is a photo gallery, music app, video viewer all rolled in to one, and supports adding online services directly. For example in the photo gallery you can directly add support for FB or Picasa, but apparently not Flickr. What!?! Right?!)

    • The Rogers Stuff: Less of the Rogers stuff that was on the Magic and Dream, but still… Rogers stuff. The Rogers logo shows on bootup (but that doesn’t really bother me). There is an icon for the Rogers MyAccount app, but the app is not actually pre-installed! instead it links to the app in the marketplace. You still have to install it. This replaced the pre-installed icon. There is also a pre-installed “Shop” icon, that goes to the usual Rogers sites in the browser. Attention Rogers… I will never use this! Why bother? Rogers also pre-installs an app called UrMusic. It is a music player, but a horrible one. Those of you with the HTC Magic and Dream… this music player looks worse than that. It’s also pretty pointless since the X10 comes with the MediaScape player that pretty much rolls over UrMusic without even noticing it hit something. I can only assume this app was rushed to be on the X10 in time for launch, but who knows. It seems the only real reason it is there is because you can use it to buy music  online (from Rogers?) but it only seems to work when you have a 3G/Data signal so that Rogers can “verify” your device. I was able to connect last night with data on, I assumed my phone was “verified” but now that I don’t have data, it doesn’t let me in. Seems you have to buy your music using your data, and not WiFi, I guess so Rogers can make more money when you go over your limit? Maybe Rogers can clarify for us.

That’s it for my quick GutReactionReview™. So far I like the phone in general, but there are some irritants (but don’t all phones have those?). I will write a more in depth review after more use. Leave questions in the comments, and I’ll try to answer them.

Please visit IWMOPS for original review. You can follow Michael Schmidt on twitter as well.

  • Rogers urMusic – Don’t Waste Your Time

Just released a couple days ago, urMusic is a media player and mobile box office. The only issue is that it’s not that great. I applaud Rogers Wireless taking a particular interest in Android but it definitely could have been done a lot better. It is quite clear they took an application from their regular java-enabled feature phones and stuck it on Android.  It doesn’t take advantage of the Android OS in any way. The first thing that enticed me into downloading it was the market description as follows:

Rogers urMusic turns your phone into the ultimate music player allowing you to import and sideload your existing music to your phone for FREE. Discover, browse and preview new music. Download songs and albums. Create your own playlists. Plus, get access to hot concert tickets with zero service charges!

My favourite part? ” import and sideload your existing music to your phone for FREE”, NO WAY! I love sideloading music I own for free! Getting serious though, the application does the basic functionality of letting you search your library, play music, and shuffle. In addition to the simple media player the application forwards you to a mobile optimized site that lets you buy and download music as well as purchase concert tickets. As you saw in the description there is no service charges on all concert tickets but I can’t say that will drive me to use a basic media player that forwards me to my phone’s browser. I really think the app is more of an advertisement for people to start using the urMusic service to purchase concert tickets and to also increase sales for overpriced music from Rogers. So as I said in the title, don’t waste your time, and rather go straight to the urMusic website to save on service charges.

  • Android Advocacy: We Try Harder

No one will contradict me when I say that when it comes to application stores, Apple has it down and Google is the unfortunate underdog. With only a couple years in the game, this is no surprise to anyone and could have been very much expected. Although it’s days like today that we learn about a story about how Google tries harder than anyone else and gains even more respect of the public. We have recently learned that Google and many other Android enthusiasts have been trying to persuade developers of the opposing team to make applications for Android. It should be noted that no one is trying to steal developers from the other team, but rather have them port the same applications they build for other platforms for Android as well. The following is just such a story.

“I’m the developer of the Texts From Last Night app for the iPhone. Anyway, I received an e-mail yesterday from someone at Google claiming to be in their Android Advocacy Group. He basically said that he wanted to open a line of communication with me in case I chose to port the app to Android, and he offered to ship me a free Nexus One to play around with.

“It shows that Google is actively recruiting developers to their platform, using the enticements of free hardware and open communication.

“Contrast with Apple’s approach: it took us about three months of resubmitting our app to Apple before they stopped rejecting it for inappropriate content. And even now (after we peaked at the No. 7 paid app), we still have no relationship with anyone there. Huge difference in approaches between the two companies.”

To be honest we would never have seen the type of growth in the Android Market that we have seen recently had it not been for iPhone apps being ported over. I think it’s great that this kind of sharing is going on because all dark/light side arguments aside, we should all have access to the same software and apps, no matter what platform we choose.

  • “Sloof Lirpa” Source Code Released

On April Fool’s Day we released an app on the Android Market that claimed to be a World War 2 First Person Shooter which ended up actually being a humorous self-destruct button. While it was a dirty mean trick we have released the source code of our April Fool’s Day app after we got questions from aspiring developers asking if they could see the inner workings of such a simple app. It is not a tutorial but rather a chance for new developers to see some important features of Android in action. The source code is available in our Downloads section on the AndroidGuys Projects Website in the form of a zip file. While the app has now been taken off the Android Market now seeing as April Fool’s is now over, it is still available for download as in our Downloads section. The key features that developers can look out for in the well-commented code are as follows:

    • Use of SoundFX using the Android SoundPool Class.
    • Use of threads to make a timer.
    • Simple Animation using XML animation files.
    • Use of a device’s Vibrator
    • and many other simple things such as intent, OnClickListener interfaces, and runnables.

As I am still a fairly new developer, some of the code you see may not be “best-practice”,  but in the end I always come out with an app that works exactly as I had originally imagined. I hope the source code is helpful to many new and aspiring developers as my personal source of education has primarily been from examining other developers code.

    Thanks and Happy Coding!

  • Official Digg App Released!

For those who are avid “Diggers” out there, you will be pleased to know that the official Digg application for Android (and iPhone) has now been released. I was quite surprised to receive an email from Digg today. The email went as follows.

We realize that many Diggers are often on the go and want to take Digg along for the ride, so we’re excited to announce not one, but TWO new apps for your mobile devices. Whether you’re in Boston or Bangladesh, Digg is now always at your fingertips.

    Digg Android App

For those of you using Android devices, we’ve got something for you too! We just launched the Digg Android app that also gives you the power of Digg even when you’re away from your computer. Just like the iPhone app, you can Digg and bury stories, read the top comments, and unique to Android phones, it also supports landscape mode. Because it works with an in-app browser, you can easily pan around and zoom in and out of content.
    Download the Android App

These are just a few of the things we’re working on in the mobile space. If you don’t have an iPhone or Android device, you can always use our current mobile site – m.digg.com – which is optimized to work on any mobile browser. We’re also making quite a few improvements and iterations to both the iPhone and Android apps in the coming weeks, many drawing off some of the changes we’re working on for Digg.com, so stay tuned and be sure to let us know what you think!

    Thanks,

    The Digg Team

The app is simple, elegant, and packs all the features you need for a full experience. The application has three tabs which show Top, Recent, and Upcoming stories. To be able to dig stories you must do a quick security check with Digg.com like the ones we’ve seen quite often for twitter applications and clients. Clicking on articles will bring you to the link, photo, video, etc. using an in-application browser. Other features available include viewing comments and related stories. The one key function it is missing which I will assume will come in a later release is the ability to search. At the present moment you can only view stories in the three categories previously stated. Definitely a keeper!

  • Mystique – Android’s Most Horrifying Puzzle

Mystique is a 3D RPG puzzle game that is available in 3 versions on the Android Market. I have seen this game in the Featured Apps section hundreds of times and only today was I curious enough to want to download it. On my brand new Nexus One this game blew me away. The 3D graphics and textures were amazing that I actually felt like I was the character in the game, even though I was playing on a 3.7 inch screen. The game is reminiscent of “Silent Hill 4: The Room” if you’ve ever played. The first installment of the series entitled “Foetus”, is somewhat of an intro to the series and quite short, depending on how quickly you can figure out how to get out of the “DAMN” room as I have coined it after the frustration it will cause you. When I say frustration, it’s the kind of frustration that makes you want to keep going and prove yourself to the game.

Just to give you a little taste into what this horrifying game is about here is what I have found out about the back story of the character’s epic adventure. In chapter 1 you start off locked in a bathroom where you must use anything and everything you find to get out of a room. A room that seems to be filled with ghosts of frightening children who look like they’ve been hit in the face with death. Chapter 2 “The Child” adds more to the story of where you actually are. From what I have gathered by the different rooms you explore is that you are in a sick and twisted mental hospital composed of surgery, torture, and padded rooms. Still only stuck on one floor of the building you must now find a way out. I have not started chapter 3 “Obitus” but I have it downloaded and installed ready to go when my phone cools down. I played straight through for approximately 4 hours trying to finish chapter 2 and now it feels like I’ve microwaved my new N1. Please don’t repeat my mistakes and take a break every once in a while from the game for your phone’s sake, if not for your own sanity!

I have tested the game on an LG Eve and a Nexus One and while the graphics are very similar, the overall smoothness of gameplay takes a hit on lower end phones. Even if I did not own a Nexus One I would still buy the game though because it is such an exciting and horrifying adventure. Trust me though, this game is not for the light-hearted as the game can be quite graphic sometimes. At a price of free for Chapter 1 and $1.99 for Chapters 2 and 3 this game is a steal, there is no reason to not buy this game.

See below for trailers of Chapters 2 and 3.

  • Android Isn’t The Most Popular… Yet.

No matter when you got into Android, whether it was since the beginning of time (November 5, 2007) or since a week ago, you have seen Android grow in some way. The latest growth we hear about is from Canalys, a research firm, that says Android will have a growth rate of 169.2% this year. While that is a huge jump Android is still running behind the current leaders RIM and Apple.

This rise in Android has a lot to do with the availability across multiple carriers and price point for consumers who are buying smartphones. These lower priced Android phones will rocket Android’s market share from 9.7% to 18.9% this year. Both RIM Blackberry and Apple iPhone are to see a significant drop in market share due to Android’s rise.

One more thing I assume we will see is a large drop in the amount of people giving confused looks when you talk about Android!

  • Dell Aero – Android Never Looked So Good

Besides the status bar, you wouldn’t know this was Android. This in my opinion could be the best looking Android UI we have seen since HTC Sense. The phone I talk about is soon to be released by AT&T called the Dell Aero; a version of the Dell Mini 3i. I can not say much about functionality as the phone has not been released but first impressions like this make me all warm and fuzzy inside. As for what we’ve heard about the specifications it has a 5MP camera, 640×360 touchscreen, and other features seen in the Mini 3i. The screen size is an unusual one for Android that we don’t see often; halfway between a G1 and a Nexus One.

This phone is announced along side the first pair of GSM webOS smartphones, Palm Pre and Palm Pixi, to make it to the United States.  It also marks the second Android phone to come to AT&T since the Motorola Backflip. We can only hope that the Dell Aero does not follow in the Backflip’s disastrous footsteps. No release date known yet.

  • Verizon Advertises The HTC Desire, But Not Really.

Verizon was just caught by an anonymous tipster advertising the Droid Eris as having an HTC Desire in the box! Everyone, get to Verizon Wireless and demand your Droid Eris with a side of HTC Desire! Ok… So obviously this is a mistake and actually one with a valid reason. In the past HTC has used the the “Desire” name as an internal codename for many other HTC phones including the Droid Eris. It could be assumed that this typo has gone unnoticed for months. Don’t worry folks, I’m sure we’ll get our hands on a Desire soon! Until then we can laugh about this typo.

  • Gesture Search: An Open Letter To Google

By now many of you have discovered that Gesture Search is available to all Android 1.6+ devices from the Market. Now question is… is it useful? Most people I have spoken to have given me something along the lines of, “Sort of, but it’s not as accessible as I’d like”. So while this is a Google Labs product, meaning it’s in the famous “BETA” stage, I have something for Google to take into consideration.

The issue here is that the gesture search is just not quick enough to access. While many have told me to put it on my homescreen, it’s still not any more useful than using the universal Google Search widget. So now all of the enlightened people are thinking well maybe Google should build it into apps like the contact list, GMail, or even in a homescreen widget. That might be all fine and dandy but let’s go back to what Android is all about. Android is all about collaboration and improvement as can be seen from the Open Handset Alliance’s initiatives. So why not make Google Gesture Search a developer tool? Gestures have long since been available to developers since Android 1.6, but think of all the uses developers could get out of universal search within their applications? Today, Android developers have an abundance of tools at their fingertips to improve all aspects of applications. AdMob to improve profitability, JTwitter to make twitter clients, Google Maps integration, and even GUI design via DroidDraw. All of these tools distributed for free so that developer’s can take them and make applications that are better than those on any other mobile platform.

I imagine being in a twitter client and searching my followers by drawing their name so that I can send them a direct message. How about being  in the Android Guys App and searching articles with gesture search? So why not make gesture search open and let developers run with it. Let us integrate it into applications, widgets, and more. Give the people what they want!

    Sincerely,

    The Android Community

  • Rogers MyAccount for Android

Rogers has shown their devotion to Android and that they see it as a serious competitor in the mobile industry. How? Approximately a week ago Rogers released a much awaited application for Rogers users that allows one to natively access some of the most used account information. Up until a week ago the only way to access this information was to check MyAccount through the web interface.

Features available in this app are:

    • View current Voice, Data, and Messaging use for the month so far
    • Check account balance, billing cycle, and last payment
    • Make a payment directly within application
    • Common help and support issues
    • Available in English and French languages
    • Feedback form

This application has been available on iPhone since November with availability coming to more devices such as Blackberry and other smartphones in the near future. I have already found the app a great help in informing me when I’m getting close to exceeding my voice usage, a common problem! I assume that this app will become a standard application that is released with all Rogers Android devices from now on. This application comes amidst a plethora of other great Android news many of you have already hear about this week. This other good news includes the availability of paid apps and the new Nexus One that is compatible with Rogers. Download the MyAccount app from the Android Market because it is one you can’t do without.
