  • Kid’s names (names for kids)

My girlfriend and I have been having ‘lighthearted’ chats recently about what names we would give to any of our potential progeny (:shifty:).

She’s been winding me up by coming up with joke names and pretending she’s deathly serious (Digory!?) and I’ve countered by being deathly serious about wanting to call a girl Jet (which she refuses to do – point blank).

The other day we both agreed that we like the name Lorelei, but perhaps we’re being a bit silly.

Both of our sets of parents were hippies so she has a slightly daft hippie name and I have a utterly ludicrous hippie name which I’ve suffered with my entire life (I used to get people to call me David or Steve when I was a kid) so we don’t want to traumatise our kids by revisiting upon them the ‘sins of the father’, but we also don’t want give them boring names.

What are your thoughts on children’s names.

Do you know any mad ones?

Are you happy with yours, or not?

Do you sometimes look at your parents and think "you bastards"? (I do). 🙂

  • Sexy or ardor stunting accents/languages

Personally I’ve been very lucky with girlfriends having sexy voices (Brazilian, Scottish, French, Somerset, etc) but I wondered if anybody has a preference – or an accent that makes your ardor shrivel.

For me, I absolutely adore a Scottish accent on a woman.

  • Camouflage

I’ve never visited The Barracks before, let alone started a thread, but I thought I’d start one about about camouflage – one of my personal favourite things.

Ever since I was a kid I’ve been fascinated by it and what’s more have found it aesthetically very pleasing.

What kinds of Camo do you all like or dislike; what kinds are effective and which are useless and how do you think various kinds of camouflage reflect the cultural nuances of the countries that produce them?

Anyway this is my all time favourite type of camouflage – ‘lozenge’ camouflage for WWI German aircraft. 🙂

  • The Ray Harryhausen appreciation thread.

I noticed on from the Clash of the Titans remake thread that Ray Harryhausen was getting much love from the denizens of SSC.

He was one of idols as a child and I’d say that before Star Wars came along his movies were my absolute favourites.

To this day when one of them comes on TV I’m glued to the box, reliving the exact same childhood thrill.

This was on TV the other week and was an absolute cracker.

The fight with Kali is probably my No.1 Harryhausen moment.

    The man’s a bloody legend! 🙂

  • Products you swear by and products you swear at.

What products (consumer items) do you think really live up to the hype and/or that you just couldn’t live without and which ones are just plain useless despite their reputation and/or hype?

What are the old classics that have simply never been bettered and which ones are inexplicably still hanging around – which products are the ‘New Kids on the Block’ and which are the ‘Johnny Come Latelys’?

Name for fame and name and shame!

  • Worst ads ever!

Inspired by this abomination from webuyanycar.com I thought I’d start a thread devoted to the fine ‘art’ of shite peddling.

  • Where’s Willie?

    Well? Where is he?

I don’t know the guy at all, but he’s the Admiral Akbar leader and only moral compass of SSC to me, so…

  • Did you know?

Post all your strange, esoteric, useful and indeed utterly useless facts here. 🙂

I’ll ‘kick off’ with this one:

American Jazz poet (most famous for his classic 1970 song "The Revolution will not be Televised") and black radical Gil Scott-Heron’s Dad Giles "Gil" Heron played as a centre forward for Celtic in the early 1950s.

He was Celtic’s 1st ever black player and was nicknamed the "Black Arrow" or the "Black Flash" – he scored on his debut.

He played for Celtic for two seasons before moving to Third Lanark, Kidderminster Harriers and finally back to America to the Detroit Corinthians.
