The Internet is the most popular source of news after television, and reading the news is becoming increasingly social, according to a new report by the Pew Internet & American Life Project examining how people consume news.
The Internet now outranks print newspapers and radio in popularity as a source of news. Sixty-one percent of Americans said they read news online, while 54 percent said they listen to news on the radio, 50 percent read a local newspaper and just 17 percent read a national newspaper. One-third of cellphone owners read the news on their phones.

The San Jose Mercury News reports that a survey of 200 students found that about a third worried about becoming iPhone addicts and more than a third heard concerns that they used their iPhones too much. About 75 percent of those surveyed said owning an iPhone made them happier.

The new application will keep students engaged with campus events, news, courses and up-to-date contact information from their smart phone, while universities are provided with a mechanism for delivering course related materials through joule. It will support multiple mobile platforms, including Apple iPhone, RIM Blackberry, Android, Symbian and Windows for Mobile.

Tufts University this year has become the first selective college in the nation to encourage applicants to submit videos about themselves. More than 1,000 high school seniors have included one-minute video essays in their bids for a spot in the Class of 2014, and the videos, posted to YouTube, have generated a surprise following among Tufts students and alumni, who are posting comments campaigning for their favorites.
Some of the videos have developed a YouTube following. The popular favorite is probably Amelia Downs, with more than 6,000 views for her video, combining “two of my favorite things: being a nerd and dancing,” have earned her a moniker, “math dance girl.’’
