  • ARTICLE: Google working with Sony and Intel for Google TV

From the desktop, to the smartphone, and into your living room, Google is quickly finding its way into every aspect of your life.  This time, however, Google is joining forces with Intel and Sony to bring you a platform called Google TV.  Google TV is based on Android and is intended to bring web content either directly to your television or through a set-top box.  According to the New York Times, “The partners envision technology that will make it as easy for TV users to navigate Web applications, like the Twitter social network and the Picasa photo site, as it is to change the channel.”

In the coming months, Google is expected to release the SDK for Google TV in hopes that developers will take to it like they did Android.  Presumably, because it’s based on Android OS, it should be easy for experienced developers to pick up quickly.  Opening the platform to developers to create apps of their choosing could bring new meaning to the term ‘surfing the channels.’

In addition to Intel and Sony, Google has called upon Logitech to craft a special remote control with a small keyboard, for the project.  Google’s intentions in TVLand are (not surprisingly) the same as they are in any other industry, to generate revenue through advertisements.  According to an NYTimes informant with knowledge of the project, “Google wants to be everywhere the Internet is so they can put ads there.”

I’m not sure I’m sold on Google TV (or any other webTV variant for that matter).  What do you think?  Leave your comments below.

  • ARTICLE: BIS 3.0 update arrives March 28th?

    BIS 3.0

If you’re a Gmail-using BlackBerry fanatic with a device sporting OS 4.5 or higher, here’s some news that should brighten your day!  According to CrackBerry, Research in Motion will be taking down BlackBerry Internet Service for four hours (assuming there’s no hiccups) to upgrade from the current v2.8 to BIS version 3.0.  All this is expected to take place during the early morning hours of March 28, so as not to disturb “normal” usage.  The upgrade is said to create an outage that will affect 100% of BIS users across North America (that’s a lot of folks…).

According to CrackBerry’s information, the outage will take place “between 0100 CT / 0200 EDT on March 28th and 0500 CT / 0600 EDT on March 28th.”  Don’t worry, though, the benefits will probably outweigh the costs (eventually).  Some features that you’ll see immediately enhanced are “increased attachment compatibility” for OpenOffice files and Windows Media Audio files, as well as other features that get more into the technical nitty gritty.  Additionally, we can expect to see features such as two-way sync between read, unread, and sent mail between your BlackBerry and Gmail inbox (you’ve probably noticed that the current version is one-way only), as well as the ability to create and delete labels directly from your BlackBerry.  These features are expected to “be added throughout the Spring 2010 by region.”

I know I’ll be going to bed at a reasonable hour this Saturday evening, and hope to wake up to some fun surprises on my BlackBerry.  What about you?  Sound off in the comments section below!

  • ARTICLE: AT&T’s OTHER tablet: OpenPeak OpenTablet 7

AT&T’s got that iPad thingy to start supporting when Apple’s 3G-enabled tablet computers start shipping in a month or so, but in the meantime they’ve signed up another tablet computer to bring into the fold. Meet the OpenPeak OpenTablet 7, a 7″ touchscreen tablet computer with VoIP and multimedia features that will be available with AT&T 3G support later this year.

Company brass showed a prototype of the device at a media luncheon today at CTIA in Las Vegas, and they made a point of not calling it an Apple competitor. Instead, OpenTablet is positioned as a unique device with a unique audience that’s separate of or perhaps complimentary to iPad’s likely user base. But, you know, it’s a brand new tablet computer with lots of multimedia features. So by default it’s an iPad competitor.

I haven’t gotten anywhere near an OpenTablet in the flesh, but on paper – and from across the room where the prototype was held up on stage – it looks pretty interesting. The device is powered by an Intel Atom chip and, according to OpenPeak’s website, is a mere 15mm thick. Product photos show a familiar grid of icons UI, and the icons themselves include YouTube, Google Talk, Pandora, Facebook, Weather, and an Energy consumption monitoring app. The website also mentions goodies like HD camera, HDMI video out, multitouch display, WiFi, bluetooth, and a charging dock.

No pricing or specific release date information for OpenTablet has been released yet, but the device looks very intriguing to say the least.
