Sony Ericsson after nearly four months gave Satio a new software update, R2AK006. Satio which was cramped with bugs when it was launched, after the previous update, most of the bugs where solved. The latest update from Sony Ericsson not only solved the remaining bugs but also gave some goodies for the users..

Here is the change log given by Sony Ericsson at their product blog.

• Support for WVGA video recording – The already great video recording will be enhanced to fit the wide screen format and hence resolution is also slightly increased to 864 * 480 pixles. (the preset size will still be VGA, user has to change to get WVGA)
• Upload of pictures to Facebook – It will be possible to upload pictures directly from the picture menu you have on the home screen or from the Media UI.
• Youtube video uploading – It will be possible to upload videos to Youtube directly from the Media UI.
• Conversational messaging – “Conversations” will be nicely integrated in the messaging menu in order to easily find and inspire to more conversations with your friends.
• DLNA support – The new software will support DLNA media server for easy transfer of audio and still pictures. (Note that video is not supported)
• UI improvements – On top of above, several minor UI improvements have been done in order to optimize the user experience.
• The Facebook application that is now available on PlayNow for free download will be included in the software.

After the update, Satio is lot more faster. Sony Ericsson is finally working on making their customers satisfied. But one thing which was missing was kinetic scrolling. Hope it will be added in the next update.

After unveiling three new quality handsets at the MWC in Barcelona, Sony Ericsson’s President Bert Nordberg told a Swedish publication Sydsvenskan a spicy news, that Sony Ericsson was offered before HTC to make Google’s phone now known as Nexus One. But Sony Ericsson declined that offer.

I was wondering why this was not told during the press conference held recently at Barcelona, during MWC? This is a news which will make everyone react in ‘awe’. So, the big question is why did Sony Ericsson did so? Mr. Bert Nordberg explains that Sony Ericsson will use their own hardware to make their own device, and not for any third party on contract.

Keeping in mind the present state of Sony Ericsson, who is now on the path of recovery from the darkest two years of their lifetime. This opportunity could have proved helpful for them, seeing the popularity HTC got from the deal with Google.

However, this proves the appreciation of Sony Ericsson as a quality brand from Google. I am sure after seeing the popularity HTC got from the Nexus One, Sony Ericsson must be regretting its denial on that deal. And the exposure of this news so late, proves the regret of Sony Ericsson.

Today, Microsoft at their press conference at Barcelona, unveiled the Windows Phone 7 series OS. The new Windows Phone 7 OS, is very different from what we have seen from Microsoft all these years. The UI has nice animations and the transitions in the UI is also very smooth.

Along with the change in OS, Microsoft also made changes on the buttons of the phone. From now Windows Phone will have three buttons on the front- start, search and back. The start screen of the new Windows Phone 7 will have tiles.

In these tiles, we can add applications, playlist etc. These tiles will be like an online widget, taking an example of facebook, if your friend updates its status it will be reflected on the tiles. The first thing that Microsoft showed was the calendar. The calendar was very refreshing with views like days, agenda. The calendar detects the phone numbers and address in the browser, in email and messages, so we don’t have to copy paste them.

The next thing was the maps. Zooming is done by pinch and transition is smooth. Windows Phone 7 supports multi touch gestures. The local search engine will be Bing.

Microsoft called the Integrated services of the Windows Phone 7 series as Hubs. There are five Hubs altogether. The first is People, which means contacts. Microsoft tried to bring all the info and updates of a particular contact at one place, like info in one pane, latest update on social networking site on the next pane.

The second Hub is Pictures. The layout is simple with options like albums, all, favorites. Some new panel will be there like recently synced items, which contains the update of the social networking sites and friends. Pictures on the phone can be directly uploaded to facebook, thanks to the integrated application.

The third Hub is the Office. Office opens with options for new pages and recently created items. The middle panel shows the created documents. The right panel is the SharePoint panel. There were no pictures or video shown of the UI. It will roll out soon.

The fourth Hub is the music and video. Microsoft said that the Windows Phone 7 will be a Zune. Those who are familiar with Zune will find no problem to recognize this. The options under Zune where music, video, podcast, radio and market.

The fifth and final Hub is for games. the game Hub will feature Xbox LIVE as an inbuilt part of Windows Phone 7. There were no demos shown of a game.

The new OS by Microsoft looks very promising. We will soon update about the first handset to have a Windows Phone 7 and its release date. Stay tuned.

Today, at the press conference of Nokia in Barcelona, Intel was supposed to join them. Everyone was wondering what is the reason behind this. Nokia and Intel have merged their respective OS i.e. Maemo and Moblin to a new OS called MeeGo.

So what does this mean? This means that the two companies will now run MeeGo OS on their phones. Applications of Moblin and Maemo will be supported on MeeGo. The first MeeGo handset is supposed to be released in Q2 this year.

MeeGo will coexist with Symbian, is said by Nokia. MeeGo will be open source OS. During the Q/A, Nokia was asked that, why would manufactures select MeeGo? Nokia replied that “This is truly open — we really are inviting everybody.” We will see in future how this new OS performs. But there is still quite a long time left, before the first MeeGo device hits the market.

Android has been the recent choice for most of the mobile handset manufacturers. So it will be interesting to see, how this new joint OS from Nokia and Intel performs in the market. This is it from Nokia and Intel for now. Stay tuned for the Nokia press conference.
