AMD today unveiled two new processors featuring six cores for the general consumer. The two new processors – Phenom II 1055T and the Phenom II X6 1090T – run at 2.8Ghz and 3.2Ghz respectively. Both the processors have 3MB of L2 cache, and 6Mb of L3 cache. The TDP of both the processors is rated at 125W. The processors will work on motherboards with either AM2+ or AM3 socket, having proper BIOS support.

“With AMD Phenom II X6 processors, discerning customers can build an incredible, immersive entertainment system and content creation powerhouse. AMD is answering the call for elite desktop PC performance and features at an affordable price.”- said Bob Grim, Director of Client Platform Marketing at AMD.

The processors also feature AMD’s “Turbo CORE” technology, which can automatically overclock up to 3 cores. This will allow an increase in performance for single threaded applications. Both the processors have been built on the 45nm fabrication process. The processors contain 904 million transistors and have a die size of 346mm2. AMD also launched the 890FX chipset. The 890FX chipset is more or less identical to its predecessor – the 790FX.

The new chipset is built on the 65nm fabrication process. The main difference is the new SB850 Southbridge. The new chipset has support for 14 USB 2.0 ports, and 6 SATA ports but has no USB 3.0 ports. AMD calls the 890FX chipset, a Dx11 based ATI graphics card and a Thuban based six core processor combination – Leo – the successor to the “Dragon” platform.

The MSRP for the Phenom II X6 1090T is 285$ while that of Phenom II X6 1050T is 199$. At this price point the AMD Phenom II X6 processors, seem a much more valuable option compared to the six core i7-980X CPU from Intel, which cost 1000$.

AMD launched its 5xxx series of graphics card for consumers in September, last year. The 5xxx series of graphics card featured many new technological improvements including ATI’s Eyefinity. ATI Eyefinity technology allows users to attach and use up to 3 monitors simultaneously, excluding the ATI 5870 Eyefinity edition. The ATI 5870 Eyefinity edition features 6 DisplayPorts, so users can hook up to 6 monitors and use them simultaneously.

Now AMD has unveiled its FirePro line-up of graphics card for professionals. At the beginning of this month, AMD had announced the ATI FirePro V8800 graphics card. AMD had described the card as “the industry’s most powerful professional graphics card ever created.” The ATI V8800 features 1600 stream processors, and 2GB of GDDR5 memory and costs 1,499$.

The cards which AMD announced today are – specification wise – placed below the ATI FirePro V8800. The ATI V7800 has 1440 stream processors, along with 2Gb of GDDR5 memory. The card also features a dual DisplayPort, and a single dual-link DVI output. AMD describes the FirePro V8800 as “ultra-fast.” Next in line is the “true workhorse” V5800. At 800 stream processors, the V5800 has 640 stream processors less than the V7800. The graphics memory has also been halved at 1Gb.

The “entry-level” cards – the V4800 and the V3800 – have 400 stream processors. The V4800 has 1Gb of GDDR5 memory while the V3800 has 512Mb of GDDR3 memory. The FirePro V4800 is equipped with two DisplayPort and one dual-link DVI port. The ATI FirePro V3800 has one display port and one dual-link DVI port. AMD did not mention the pricing or the release dates of these cards.

If you guys thought that Floppy Disks are already extinct – Hold you breath – Sony managed to sell 12 million 3.5 inch floppy disks in Japan last year. Yes, thats 12 Million! Seriously, I wonder why did people purchase a floppy disk in this age and time? Well even with such an impressive sales figure, the days of 3.5 inch floppy disks are numbered.

Sony today announced that it will stop the production of 3.5 inch floppy disks by March 2011. Sony is one of the major manufacturers of the oldest data storage medium – the floppy disk – which started its journey in 1981. Sony had already stopped the production of floppy disk drives all over the world, except for Japan. Now, by March 2011, the company will cease the production of floppy disks in Japan as well. This will effectively be the end of the road for floppy disks.

The Playstation 3 from Sony is arguably the best console – hardware wise – in the market currently. The PS3 has a Nvidia RSX GPU with 256MB of GDDR3 memory and, a Cell Microprocessor designed by IBM. With the launch of the PS3 Slim Model, the Cell CPU of PS3 moved to a 45nm manufacturing process. This led to a decrease in power consumption, lower temperatures, and reduction in the cost of production.

Now Playstation University reports that the new PS3 Slim RSX GPU will be based on the 40nm fabrication process.  At the time of its launch, the PS3 RSX GPU used the 65nm fabrication process. The shift to a lower fabrication process has many advantages including the reduction of the Yellow Light Of Death on the PS3s. Thanks to the shift in lower fabrication process, the cooling unit of the new PS3 Slim has also been redesigned. It is now less complex compared to its predecessor.

It is reported that the drop in power consumption is around 15%. The power supply has also seen a weight reduction, and now weighs in at 412g. The original PS3 power adapter used to weigh 815g. Quite a few chips have also been removed from around the Nvidia RSX GPU, leading to a lower cost of production.

The main benefit of the shift to 40nm fabrication process is the lower cost of production. The new PS3 Slim, even though cheaper by 100$, will allow Sony to earn profit on every console sold. Until now, Sony has been incurring losses on every PS3 they have sold.

Apart from Intel and AMD, VIA technologies are also one of the x86-64 processor manufacturers in the market. VIA CPUs might not be as popular as their Intel and AMD counterparts, but the company still has some market share. Today, VIA unveiled their Nano E-series of processors. The Nano-E series of CPUs have native 64 bit software support and virtualization support.

At the time of their launch, the Nano-E CPUs will be available in speeds ranging from 800MHz to 1.8Ghz. The CPUs will also feature VIA’s integrated media system processors and various other codec’s including HD video playback and 3D graphics acceleration. VIA have guaranteed that these processors will have a longevity of seven years. The Nano-E series processors from VIA have many other top-end features so as to support the upcoming Windows Embedded Standard 7.

The Windows Embedded Standard 7 states that every CPU should double the amount of data it can process per clock cycle. But according to VIA, virtual software deployment could revolutionize the embedded market. VIA said that it expects to “become the norm, not the exception for upcoming embedded system developers”.

After Apple made the move to x86 processors in 2006, Intel has been their lone CPU supplier. The shift to Intel processors was appreciated by many as it brought faster performance across the whole line-up. Thanks to the shift to the Intel processors, Apple now refreshes its various product line-up every year with better CPUs. But now it seems like Apple is interested in using AMD processors in its products as well. AppleInsider reports that Apple is in serious discussions with various representatives from AMD about adopting their CPUs.

Engadget reports that Dell will soon be announcing the Dell Streak 7 inch and 10 inch tablets. The rumored launch date of the 7 inch Dell Streak is late 2010, while that of the 10 inch one is early 2011. It is possible that the device may initially be launched under the AT&T network. Engadget also reports that Dell’s Aero – the lightest Android handset to be ever announced – will be released in June, this year.

No other details about Dell’s Streak series of tablet devices are known. When the folks at Engadget contacted Dell regarding the Streak series of tablets, they got a very “insightful” reply :

“Dell continually develops and tests new products that extend the mobile experience. We have not made any product announcements and do not comment on speculation, rumor or unannounced products.”

It will be interesting to see whether the Dell Streak series of tablets run on Android OS or Windows 7. As of now, no further information about the specifications of Dell Streak tablets are available. The processor, amount of RAM, and the hard disk capacity, all remain a mystery. Since Android OS now supports the Intel Atom processor, it might very well be possible that the Dell Streak tablets use the new Atom Sandy bridge processors.

Just yesterday, Apple released the new MacBook Pros with Core i5 and i7 Processors. Along with the new Macbook Pros, Apple also released a software update for the new Macbook Pros. The MacBook Pro Software Update 1.3 weighs in at 258Mb. Apple says that update “is recommended for all 15-inch and 17-inch MacBook Pro mid-2010 models and contains improvements for graphics stability for high-performance video and gaming applications as well as various bug fixes.”

The new 15” and 17” Macbook Pros feature an Intel Core i5 or a Core i7 CPU. The 13” Macbook Pro still uses the Intel Core 2 Duo processor, though the processor now runs at 2.66Ghz. 4Gb of DDR3 RAM is now standard across all the Macbook Pros now. Apple also updated its implementation of the Mini DisplayPort. It can now simultaneously transfer video as well as audio signals. This mean users can now enjoy both audio and video signals when they connect their MacBook Pro to a HDTV using a miniDP to HDMI adapter. Apple sells one such converter from Griffin on their online shop. The 24” Apple Cinema LED Display still relies on USB connection for audio signals, even when connected to the newer MacBook Pros.

Microsoft will be killing the Xbox live service for the original Xbox tonight. Microsoft had launched the original Xbox live service, along with the original Xbox gaming console way back in 2002. Xbox live was the first major successful online gaming service. Obviously, the Xbox 360 will still be supported. Though the games which were supported at the launch of the service in 2002, won’t be supported from now.  This move is definitely a step forward. After the Xbox live service on the original Xbox will be phased out, the 100 friends cap will be removed from the service.

Support for classic multi-player games like Battlefront 2, Crimson Skies, and the highly popular Halo 2 will be ceased as well. Owners of the original Xbox gaming console can still play games in the offline (single player) mode. Though, they will definitely be missing the fun of playing multi-player games online like Halo 2 etcetera. This move will allow Microsoft to add new features in the Xbox live, which the older Xbox could not support.

The Apple iPad has met with astounding success in the U.S. market. Apple claimed that it managed to sold 300,000 iPads on its launch day. When Steve Jobs announced the iPhone OS 4.0, he said that in the first week more than 450,000 iPads were sold. Thanks to the heavy demand in the U.S. market, Apple has decided to push back the international release date of the iPad by a month.

“Faced with this surprisingly strong U.S. demand, we have made the difficult decision to postpone the international launch of iPad by one month, until the end of May. We will announce international pricing and begin taking online pre-orders on Monday, May 10,” said Apple in a press release.

Typical of Apple, the company also boasted about the strong sales of its product in the press release. “We know that many international customers waiting to buy an iPad will be disappointed by this news, but we hope they will be pleased to learn the reason—the iPad is a runaway success in the U.S. thus far.” As of now, there is virtually no competition for the iPad. Things will however change soon, with the launch of Meizu’s Mbook and few other Android based tablet devices. HP will also be soon launching its tablet device a.k.a Slate, which will run Windows 7.

Apple did not comment on the iPads overheating and Wi-Fi connectivity issue, which we had reported earlier.

Today, HP unveiled the worlds first plug and play laser printer. Now users can plug in the new HP LaserJet printer’s to a computer/netbook/notebook and start printing their documents. HP have ditched the traditional method of installing the software via a CD. A user-friendly as well as an eco-friendly move. HP also states that the HP LaserJet Pro P1100 Printer series is “the most energy efficient laser printer on the planet.”

HP also introduced its first mobile scanner – the HP Scanjet Professional 1000 Mobile Scanner. This portable scanner can scan documents on the go, without the need of AA batteries or an AC adapter.

“Our customers demand easy printing and we’re giving it to them – no clumsy CD-ROMs to install, no drivers to download. HP Smart Install offers the future of printing, today,” said Ron Coughlin, senior vice president, LaserJet and Enterprise Solutions, Imaging and Printing Group, HP.

The new printers from HP features a new Auto-On/Off technology. The printer automatically detects a print command when send to the printer and, switches the device to “on” mode from the “off” mode. HP says that the Auto-On/Off technology makes the new HP LaserJet P1100 Printer series up to 72% more efficient. The HP LaserJet Pro P1100 printer series is the cheapest laser printer ever announced by HP. The HP LaserJet Pro P1100 series also feature wireless connectivity and its price ranges from $129 to $149.

Just a few days ago, we had reported that Apple is soon going to refresh their Macbook Pro line-up and the day has finally come. Apple today unveiled the new 15″ and 17″ Macbook Pro’s which uses the Core i5 and Core i7 processors. Sadly the 13″ Macbook Pro still uses the Core 2 Duo processor. Though, the speed of the Core 2 Duo processor has been bumped up to 2.4Ghz and 2.66Ghz.

The newer Macbook Pro(s) uses the Nvidia GT330M graphics card, while the 13″ Macbook Pro uses the Nvidia GT320M with 256Mb of Memory. The 15″ and 17″ Macbook Pro’s also have “automatic graphics switching technology” a.k.a Nvidia Optimus technology. All the new machines come with 4Gb of DDR3 RAM. Users can select between a 320Gb or a 500Gb hard disk for their storage needs. Users can also equip their 15″ and 17″ Macbook Pros with a 512Gb SSD, for only $1300.

Users who are interested in the 15″ Macbook Pro can select between a 15.4″ 1440*900 “glossy” screen or a 1680*1050 glossy screen for $50 more. Apple claims that the newer 13″ Macbook Pro can provide a battery backup of up to 10 hours. The 15″ and 17″ Macbook Pro’s provide a battery backup of 8 hours, thanks to Nvidia Optimus technology.

The newer 13″ Macbook Pro costs $1,119, while the 17″ Macbook Pro now costs $2,299. The newer 15″ Macbook Pro is now dearer by $100, at $1799. The newer Macbook Pros can already be  online from the Apple Store.

Sony today announced the A845 OLED Walkman player. The Mp3 player is a mere 7.2mm thick and has an AMOLED screen. The size of the screen is 2.8 inches and has a resolution of 240*400 (WQVGA). The device has a storage capacity of 16Gb. Sadly the player is available only in England as of now.

One unique feature of the A845 Walkman player is that it is compatible with BBC iPlayer. The player can provide continuous audio playback of 29 hours and video playback of 8 hours. The device weighs in a mere 62g. Amazon.co.uk lists the Sony A845 OLED Walkman player at 149.90 Pound.

Sony also announced the W250 MP3 player and the B150 MP3 player. The W250 is a water-resistant and wearable MP3 player, made for rough use. The player has a storage capacity of 2Gb and the battery life is rated at 11 hours. The B150 series has increased bass which is mostly preferred by school and college going students. The B150 MP3 player features a dedicated Bass Boost button along ‘with flashing red LEDs.’ The B150 also has a 2Gb storage capacity.

The pricing of Sony B150 and Sony W250 is still unknown though. All the three MP3 players are expected to release all over the world by June, this year.

Meizu, a Chinese company, is soon going to release an Apple iPad competitor. The device will be named Mbook and will feature a 8.4 inch screen. The touchscreen is a capacitive one and has resolution of 1024*768. The battery life of the Mbook is rated at around 12 hours. The Mbook will feature a 1.5Ghz processor and will be capable of playing 1080p videos via a HDMI cable.

Meizu’s Mbook will also feature 3G, GPS and Wi-Fi. The Mbook will apparently be running Google’s Android OS. The Mbook does look like a worthy competitor to the iPad. If the device is priced right, it could very well eat into iPad’s market share. Also, it is not yet known whether the applications currently present in the Android market will work on the Mbook or not.

The higher screen resolution of the Mbook compared to other Android devices present in the market, might pose a problem. The Mbook does have impressive hardware under the hood and a phenomenal battery life. As of now, no details are available about the release date and pricing of the device.

At the beginning of this year, all the laptop manufacturers updated their notebook line-up to use the new mobile Intel Core i5 and/or Core i7 processors. Only Apple’s Macbook Pro line-up still uses the older generation Core 2 Duo processors. Many people have been criticizing Apple for taking such a long time to update their Macbook Pro line-up. Apple is known to charge a premium for its products. So why will someone pay a premium for something which uses an older generation processor?

The Apple “iPhone OS 4.0” event is going to start in just a few minutes now. As usual the expectations are high from this event. Many iPhone users are hoping that the new version of iPhone OS will support multi-tasking and bring in battery life enhancements as well. Apple had recently released the Apple iPad which has got ravishing reviews all over the net. Apple said that they have managed to sell 300k iPad in the first couple of days.

It is not confirmed but users are also expecting Apple to release iPhone HD or iPhone 4G. Rumors also say that Apple will launch a refreshed line-up of the Macbook series.

10:01AM – 10:10AM : Steve Jobs before introducing us to the iPhone OS 4.0, tells us about the enormous success of the iPad. Steve said that over 250k books have been downloaded from the iBook store until date. He also said that Apple has managed to sell 450k iPad within a few days of its release. Steve also says that currently the App Store has 3.5k apps for the iPad and the number is increasing at a tremendous rate.

10:12 AM : Steve finally announces the iPhone OS 4.0. He says that the OS will ship this summer and a preview version for developers will be released today.

The Apple iPad has joined the list of Apple products which have some hardware issues. Engadget recently took a poll on how many users are facing Wi-Fi related issues with their brand new iPad and a lot of people reported Wi-Fi related issues. Apple today acknowledged that the iPad does have Wi-Fi connectivity issues but they also mentioned that its not a problem with their device. Apple said that these issues are common with some 3rd party dual-band WiFi routers.

Apple says that the iPad drops the Wi-Fi connectivity if multiple networks use the same name or different security settings. Apple suggested that users should use different names for different Wi-Fi networks and same security settings. Many users reported success after trying the remedy suggested by Apple. Aside from the Wi-Fi connectivity problem, some users are even reporting that their iPad heats up and gives a warning message “iPad needs to cool down before you can use it.” This problem was even faced by PC World Editor, Zach Honig. Apple has not yet commented about this issue.

On a serious note, Apple seriously needs to improve the testing standard and quality of its devices. All of Apple’s product that have been released in the last couple of years has had some sort of issues. The newer iMacs launched by Apple had an issue of display flickering, the refreshed line-up of Mac book Pro had poor hard disk drive performance issue etcetera.

The iPhone OS 4.0 Apple event is going to be held at the Infinite Loop campus in Cupertino. The event is scheduled to start from 10:00AM PT (-8 UTC) on April 8th 2010. Though we don’t have an invitation for the event, we will be covering the event live here at Techie Buzz.

In addition to that, Apple might also release a newer version of the iPhone, which could either be the iPhone 4G or iPhone HD, however, nothing has been confirmed as of yet.

Asus Republic Of Gamers line-up of graphics card are quite popular for their highly modified PCB’s, and cooling solutions. They are also popular for their comparatively high clock speeds than prescribed by the Graphics card maker. The latest card in Asus ROG (Republic Of Gamers) line-up is the ATi HD 5870. The card features a custom cooler – which according to Asus is made of special materials – thus achieving a 13% improvement in cooling than the reference cooler.

The core of the graphics card is clocked at 894Mhz. The card features 2Gb of GDDR5 memory clocked at 4.8Ghz on a 256 bit memory bandwith.  Asus has also incorporated their Super Hybrid Engine and iTracker 2 engine in the graphics card. The Super Hybrid Engine (SHE) automatically reduces the clock speed of the graphics card to low levels during normal operations, thus reducing power consumption. While under heavy load, it increases the speed of the card so as to deliver high performance. The iTracker 2 engine allows overclocker to safely adjust the memory timings of the graphics card.

Asus did not mention anything about the price of the card, but we expect it to cost at least 60 USD$ more than a normal ATi HD 5870.

Today, Microsoft has officially confirmed the existence of Zune HD with 64Gb storage capacity. It was just yesterday we had reported that Microsoft will soon be announcing a 64Gb version of Zune HD. Microsoft has set the release date of the media player to April 12. Along with the announcement of Zune HD 64Gb, Microsoft also reduced the price of 16Gb and 32Gb Zune HD by 20 USD$.

Yesterday Microsoft had also announced that they will soon be releasing a new firmware update for Zune HD. The new firmware update brings with it native XviD codec support, Smart DJ application and few other features. The price of Zune HD 64Gb edition will be 349.99 USD$. The competitor of Zune HD 64Gb – iPod Touch 64Gb – costs 399.99 USD$.
