I'm the tall one, Matts the short one.

“Oh Scotty,” you say… “why do you harass us constantly about tuning into the AndroidGuys Thursday Night DROIDcast every week?” My response is pretty simple; “because we have a great time and we give away free stuff.”

What more could you possibly want? Oh, you want news? Check. A rotating panel of interesting guests? Check. What about special guests from the Android community? Ya, we have that too. The only reason why you wouldn’t tune into the AndroidGuys Thursday Night DROIDcast would be if you were in the hospital in a coma. And even then hopefully your family would bring a laptop into your room and play the DROIDcast live (some say listening to my voice has medicinal value… I dunno).

So, have you gotten the point? Let me share with you what’s going on this week:

    • The AndroidGals are joining me and Matt on our panel. Hear a female’s perspective on our topics!
    • Latest AdMob numbers and what they mean.
    • No Nexus One for Verizon, Google tells us to get an Incredible.
    • Sirius/XM coming to Android?
    • Android Market hits 50,000 apps.

So why wouldn’t you tune in? There’s no reason not to! You will get the best experience by listening live, just ask any of the dozens of people that got Swype beta invites from last weeks special guest Mike McSherry, CEO of Swype Inc.

Since we’ll have the AndroidGals on the panel tomorrow, there’s a very very good chance that we will be giving away some AndroidGals shirts and decals courtesy of the dudes at AndroidSwag.com!

  • Adobe AIR on the Android Platform

By Andy Rubin, Google VP of Engineering, Android

Partnerships have been at the very heart of Android, the first truly open and comprehensive mobile platform, since we first introduced it with the Open Handset Alliance. Through close relationships with carriers, device manufacturers, developers, and others, Google is working to enable an open ecosystem for the mobile world by creating a standard, open mobile software platform. Today we’re excited that, working with Adobe, we will be able to bring both AIR and Flash to Android.

Google believes that developers should have their choice of tools and technologies to create applications. By supporting Adobe AIR on Android we hope that millions of creative designers and developers will be able to express themselves more freely when they create applications for Android devices. More broadly, AIR will foster rapid and continuous innovation across the mobile ecosystem.

Google is happy to be partnering with Adobe to bring the full web, great applications, and developer choice to the Android platform. Our engineering teams have been working closely to bring both AIR and Flash Player to Google’s mobile operating system and devices. The Android platform is enjoying spectacular adoption, and we expect our work with Adobe will help that growth continue.

We also look forward to all the innovative content and applications created for Android and Flash. Join us at Google I/O in May to learn more about our work together with Adobe to open up the world of Flash on mobile devices.

  • Would You Like To Introduce The Thursday Night Podcast?

    Podcast you say??

So, if you’ve had an opportunity to listen to our Thursday Night Podcast you know that we do things a bit differently. Well, in order to get our audience a bit more involved with the podcast we’ve come up with what we think is a pretty good idea to do just that!

What we’d like to do is this: send us an .mp3 intro of your voice introducing the show, we’ll mix it with some audio, and feature it as the intro for our Thursday Night AndroidGuys Podcast. Feel free to spice it up however you’d like but please keep it family friendly. I’m sure I’ll get multiple entries, so I’ll choose one that sounds good and mix it. I won’t announce who I’m using, so you’ll have to listen in to see if I used you that week.

The following info MUST be included in the intro for it to be considered:

    • Your first and last name.
    • The city/state/country you are hailing from.
    • “Android Guys Thursday Night Podcast hosted by Scotty Brown”

Again, feel free to use any type of inflection, voice, or accent that you’d like… as long as it is your voice and it includes the items above, you should be good. Obviously higher quality audio is required, and you’re much more likely to have your clip used if it’s entertaining. I’ve got a great sense of humor, and value individuality and creativity. Grab my attention, you’re likely to be used.

Send your submissions to [email protected] with the subject: Podcast Intro and I’ll confirm receipt of it.

If you have any questions, post them below and I’ll answer there.

Good luck, and I look forward to your creativity!

  • Droid Incredible Pre-Order: April 19th!

The gang over at Phandroid just broke that the Droid (HTC) Incredible will be available for pre-order in just a few days! Over the last week or so there have been brief glimpses of the Incredible being leaked to Verizon and maybe even T-Mobile!

    From the Phandroid website:

We got our hands on a section of the official Launch Package recently that goes in-depth with the phone’s specs, features, and even what you’ll be getting inside the box. The contents aren’t too exciting, but at least we can confirm that you won’t be getting a microSD card with the phone itself (you can thank the whopping 8 gigs of internal storage for that one).

Version numbers, SKU numbers, and all types of numbers galore! They make me happy and they should make you happy. Keep your eyes peeled to Verizon’s site Monday, April 19th where we should see the pre-order form for this thing open for business. The only downside is that those 10 days leading up to the launch of the phone will feel slower than they’ve ever felt.

Be sure to head over to the Official HTC Incredible thread over at AndroidForums.com to thank Anonimac and the entire community for constantly bringing us Phanjoy!

  • Nexus One Car Dock On Its Way!

    Nexus One Car Dock

    Hope It Sticks!

We have heard several stories over the last couple of weeks about new things appearing on theGoogle phone store, but each time the page is quickly returned to normal.

Today one of our readers spotted the highly anticipated official car dock listed for $55, but he was unable to order it because the item was listed as temporarily unavailable. He did manage to grab the link to the Car Dock help page so it appears this item is coming soon.

The car dock uses bluetooth to communicate with the Nexus One and automatically establishes a connection when the phone is inserted. The Car Home application is then launched with allows the user easy access to Maps and Navigation, Contacts, and Voice Search. Built-in speakers provide music playback and calls using the speakerphone.

From Google:  The Nexus One Car Dock is the perfect place to put your phone when you’re in the car. In addition to holding your Nexus One, the car dock also charges your phone’s battery, lets you use your phone handsfree, and provides easier access to voice and navigation apps.

The dock’s built-in speakers and volume controls also enhance the in-car music and media experience. And the Car Home app, which loads automatically, makes it easy to access Maps and Navigation, Voice Search, Contacts, and Music.

You can mount the dock on the windshield or dashboard, and it ships with an adhesive disc that lets you attach it to a textured surface as well. The dock comes with a charger to fit into your car’s 12V utility socket, and the holder can rotate for flexible orientation.

  • Engadget: Android-Based ICD Gemini is Most Feature-Complete Tablet Yet

Built around the 1GHz Tegra 2 SOC, the 11.2-inch ICD Gemini should provide comparable endurance to Apple’s A4-sporting iPad, while besting it in the grunt stakes with its glorious ability to chew through 1080p video when required. If that wasn’t enough, the rest of this thing’s spec sheet reads like a wishlist. Headlined by a 3G connection that allows cellular voice calls (crazy, we know!), it also includes a user-replaceable 40Wh battery, an SD card reader, FM radio, GPS, 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth, MicroUSB connectivity to PCs and USB peripherals, stereo speakers, and dual webcams — a 2 megapixel front-facing unit and a 5 megapixel autofocusing snapper on the back.

Multitouch displays will be available in both resistive and capacitive flavors, with the 1,366 x 768 resolution being filled by Google’s snappy Android OS. Oh, and did we mention it will run Flash? Because it will. Full specs and a comparison to its direct competitors await after the break, though we’ve yet to find out when this JooJoo killer will be making its arrival or at what price.

  • Breaking News! Steve Jobs to Apple Shareholders: “iPhone is a bust, Android FTW!!!”

Can I borrow a different shirt, please?

Thursday, April 1st 2010 – Cupertino, California – Early this morning in an unprecedented email to Apple Shareholders, Apple CEO Steve Jobs shares vital information regarding the iPhone and it’s future. In an AndroidGuys exclusive, our source has forwarded us the following email which we believe is authentic:

    From: “Steve Jobs <[email protected]>”

    To: “Shareholders Group <[email protected]>”

Subject:  LOL! Nexus One FTW! ROFLBBQ!

So, I got my Nexus One from Eric the other day when we were out for coffee… and I’ve gotta say, this thing kicks ass. I’ve got myself one of those new 32GB cards LOADED with all of those “inappropriate type” apps that we turned away from the App Store, and I got them all for free! As a matter of fact, I’m sending this email from my Nexus right now… LOL! So, get out while you can. I’m a fan and as of this moment we’re going to stop work on the iPhone software and port Android over to the new iPhone 3D. Oh, and we’re gonna sell it unlocked to.

I’ve decided that instead of being a ruthless dictator I’m going to let our customers do whatever they want with the products that they buy from us. There’s just no way we can compete by overcharging for a sub standard experience when there is a totally open source product out there that is just so much better!

OK, I’m going to use the navigation on this thing for the first time to find myself the nearest tattoo joint and have that cute little green android inked onto my right butt cheek, right next to Sergey’s signature.

    PEACE!!!

That’s right, folks! You read it here first. What does this mean for the Apple Fanboys? Where will the hipsters turn to next to get the latest and greatest fashion accessory? Reply with your ideas in the comments!

Hmm… what if the hokey pokey really IS what it's all about?

  • ThickButtons For Thick Fingers!

    Foo!

    OMG, I'm gonna fat-finger this again…

I’m a big dude. I’ve got big hands. There are times I miss my G1 and it’s hard keyboard (not bad enough to ditch the Nexus though). But, thanks to ThickButtons typing has just got a bit easier for those of us who are “less than delicate”. I’ve been switching back and forth between this keyboard and the beta Swype keyboard for the last few days.

I prefer to type with two hands in horizontal mode myself, but I can recognize that there is a time and place to type one handed. Like, say you’re busy winning a Guinness World Record for texting speed.

ThickButtons varies the size of the keys as you type, using predictive text to make keys you’re likely to use next larger. So instead of the software trying to guess what the entire word is, it is only predicting what the next letter is likely to be based upon the letter pressed. For example, if you start a word with the letter “Q”, the odds of the next letter being “U” are very high and it will make that key proportionately larger than the others.

Is it better than Swype? I don’t think so. Swype is starting to grow on me the more I use it. But, for those that simply can’t get themselves to drag their fingers around the screen ThickButtons is a great alternative.

Pick it up in the Android Market (QR below) for free and give it a shot. Who knows, maybe you’ll like it?

  • You Might Be An Android Fanboy If…

Ha Ha! You suck, I rock!

It’s no secret that I’m a huge Android fanboy. Heck, my first story on AndroidGuys was about me being exactly that, and I’ve even shared my doll memorabilia collection with you guys.

In last weeks poll we asked you to complete the following sentence, “You might be an Android fanboy if…”

Judging from the turnout, the Android community has a pretty decent sense of humor (unlike some other fruity fanboys)… While we had a couple hundred responses, I’m just going to post a few here. Some funny, some… well, let’s just say that there were definitely a few that weren’t appropriate (SICK! Some of you guys are SICK!) for posting here. Those have been omitted (I never imagined fruity fanboys being able to do THAT!) here.

So, without further ado, I bring you, You Might Be An Android Fanboy If…

    • You find yourself pressing on the TV screen trying to add a widget.
    • You use Layers to find your second story bathroom.
    • You get into west side story style dance fights with iphone users.
    • You ask a woman what apps she comes with.
    • You have an android fan fiction involving a cross over with the smurfs and Steve jobs as Garagmel.
    • You own an Android T-shirt for each day of the week.
    • When asked your favorite celebrity, you say Cyanogen.

    • You never had to jailbreak your phone just to make a phone call.
    • Your first time turning on your Nexus One was booting into the bootloader.
    • You think trix are for green robots.
    • You’re an electirc sheep. (I like this one, good job. –Scotty)
    • You still willingly use a G1.
    • You read the android guys app more than you work.
    • You check AndroidGuys every day.
    • You bought an Android Pillow.
    • You can’t wait to get up every morning to go to the market and update apps.
    • You’re always showing your iPhone friends things they can’t do, and follow by saying,”But the iphone’s good too!” so they dont feel bad.
    • You fantasize about floating widgets in the air.
    • You laugh when an iPhone user drops their precious.
    • You find that anything “Apple” irritates you.
    • You refuse to buy a product because the company has an iPhone app but not an Android app!
    • You pull out your android whenever you go near or in apple store
    • The first thing you touch in the morning an the last thing in the night isn’t your girlfriend
    • You own more android phones than you do lines of service.
    • You have a bluetooth bud in one ear, an ear bud in the other and Google Maps running while driving down the road.
    • You just bought a cliq a month ago and you’re still gonna buy a Nexus One.
    • You bleed green.
    • You wear your charger as a belt.
    • Fake G1 sciphones make your blood boil and send you into a DROIDRAGE!!!

  • My Addiction For Android Continues With This…

In my (never ending) quest to inundate my life with all things Android I run across some of the most bizarre and sometimes awesome things. Fortunately, my family tolerates my craving for more (usually, until I brought my Nexus One to bed with me… ya that was some great advice). I did find something recently that I had to fight my kids over though, and even standing at 6’4″ tall and 240 lbs, I almost lost it to them.

Say hello to my new desk companion:

    Android

    It's Not A Doll!!

I love this little dude. Handcrafted by a lovely young lady named Nicole Aaron at A Plus Amigurumi, he’s just too adorable. Yes, a 33 year old grown man just said “adorable.” You can find Nicole Aaron and her awesome creations, including the stuffed Android (it’s NOT a doll!) at her Etsy Store. Price is only $15 and $4.95 to cover shipping anywhere in the United States. If you live outside of the States, Nicole Aaron will ship it to you for only $7.

Since she makes every single one of these by hand, it does take a while to get to you (mine arrived three weeks after I placed the order). But, it’s well worth the wait to be the envy of your other Android-loving friends. Even if you are a 33 year old man that still plays with dolls collects memorabilia.

  • What Does The Google Apps Marketplace Mean For Android?

Just a few hours ago, Google launched their Google App Marketplace with over 50 vendors ready to serve up a host of applications that integrate directly with Google services. A bold move for sure, but one that may have a larger impact on Android than at first glance.

Obviously the App Marketplace targets the small to medium sized business model. These are the same businesses that often times will have people wearing multiple hats in the workplace. Your outside sales manager may also be heading up your marketing team. Your IT guy? Perhaps he’s the janitor. These types of people are usually issued company handsets and are kept within the working environment regardless of where they are. For so long, RIM’s Blackberry has dominated this market (and larger business as well), but is Google setting Android up to change that? By introducing the Apps Marketplace, Google has thrown the doors wide open for Android to successfully compete in this arena.

Google Docs has been around for awhile, and while some businesses have successfully made the switch from Microsoft Office, the critical element of a mobile integration has been missing. With the launch of Apps Marketplace, Google has showed that they are serious about being involved within the B2B market. Suddenly, the switch to Android handsets for business seems much more logical than any other mobile OS. A handful of new apps for business that tightly merge Android into the business world and meeting the needs of this new demographic at a reasonable cost may be the kind of combination that has more decision makers taking an interest.

In what ways can Android benefit from this? Simple… exposure. I believe that more people don’t have Android devices because they don’t know about them. Apple doesn’t sell (read: market) iPhone OS, they sell the iPhone hardware and experience. RIM doesn’t sell the Blackberry OS, they sell the business integration. What does Android sell? None of it. With five different flavors of Android on the market across dozens of devices, how can it be sold? Again, the answer is simple… Google Apps Marketplace offering integration with a mobile OS for businesses.

Next, toss in Chromium OS and Google will have an entire suite of solutions (with literally thousands of partners) to customize a solution for any business.
