  • Amanda Bynes Arrested For Weed, Taken to Hospital

Former child actress and Nickelodeon star Amanda Bynes has been arrested on marijuana-related charges.

According to an Associated Press report, Bynes was arrested in her Manhattan apartment on Thursday evening on charges of reckless endangerment, tampering with evidence, and possession of marijuana. The actress was reportedly smoking marijuana in the lobby of her building when the doorman called police. Bynes retreated to her apartment when police arrived, where she allegedly threw a bong out of a window.

New York’s NBC 4 is also reporting that police took Bynes to Roosevelt Hospital to undergo psychiatric evaluation before taking her in for processing. She is expected to appear in court on Friday. Bynes is currently on probation for driving on a suspended license.

Since last year, Bynes has been exhibiting bizarre behavior, starting with a string of driving-related arrests that included a hit-and-run incident involving a police officer’s car. After losing her driver’s license, the actress moved to New York City and began using her Twitter account to chronicle strange experiments with makeup and nudity. Just this week, Bynes threatened to sue InTouch magazine for publishing photos of her with what appears to be drugs in her apartment.

  • Amanda Bynes Threatens Lawsuit For “Fake” Drug Pics

Earlier this week it was reported that Amanda Bynes was turned away from boarding a private flight from New York to Los Angeles for refusing to provide proper identification. The former child actor’s driver’s licence was revoked last year after several driving charges, including a hit-and-run accident involving a police cruiser.

Now, Bynes has once again taken to her Twitter account to rail against the tabloid press she fells is involved in a conspiracy to smear her good name. Since losing her representation, Bynes has been using her Twitter account to document her experiments with makeup, hair, and nudity.

This week, Bynes’ ire was focused on a new InTouch magazine feature which seemed to show pictures of marijuana her apartment. The actress claims that the pictures are faked, but doesn’t mention the drug use. From Bynes’ TwitPlus post:

That’s not my bed! Those aren’t my toes! My toes are pedicured! I just did an exclusive interview with intouch last week, now they bought fake altered photos by that ugly black man in the photo or someone who knows him! They used an old shot of me on the cover with a bad angle of my old nose before I had surgery to reshape my profile and to remove the webbing from my eyes. I have to sue because that’s not my apartment, those aren’t my clothes! They morphed photos of my face onto someone’s body to ruin my life! I have to make a big deal of this and sue because that’s not me! I care about my appearance so I have to defend myself! I look like a different person now that I had surgery! Why did they put an old shot of me on the cover? I don’t look like that anymore! I only want photos of my gorgeous new nose on the cover of tabloids and real magazines! The photos in this issue are fake and mocked up! I don’t care enough to keep talking about it. Just assume that I fucked the boyfriend of the editor of intouch because they fucking hate me!

  • ‘Colored’ Comment Apology Offered by Golf CEO

On Thursday, the head of the European golf tour, George O’Grady, used the word “colored” to refer to minorities during a live television interview. O’Grady was commenting on a recent remark golfer Sergio Garcia made in reference to fellow golfer Tiger Woods. When asked if he would have Woods over for dinner, Garcia said, “We’ll have him ’round every night. We will serve fried chicken.”

In a live Sky Sports interview, O’Grady stated that the European tour had accepted Garcia’s apology and that the “fried chicken” remark was a poor attempt at humor.

“We were convinced that he was trying to be funny,” said O’Grady. “We know the connotation in the United States. We accept all races on the European tour. We take it very strongly. Most of Sergio’s friends happen to be very, uh, colored athletes in the United States.”

Today, O’Grady has issued a formal apology to Tiger Woods and anyone else offended by the word he used.

“I deeply regret using an inappropriate word in a live interview for Sky Sports for which I unreservedly apologize,” said O’Grady.

Garcia has also apologized for his “fried chicken” remark.

“Most importantly, I want to apologise to Tiger and anybody that I could have offended by the comment I made and, you know, just say that I feel sick about it,” said Garcia. “I am truly, truly sorry and, you know, I hope that, you know, we can kinda settle down and hopefully move on.”

  • Warehouse Captive Rescued by NYPD

Earlier this week, the Queens County District Attorney announced that three men have been charged with kidnapping and unlawful imprisonment in connection with the bold kidnapping of an Ecuadorian businessman. The men are alleged to have kidnapped Pedro Portugal from a Queens street in broad daylight and kept him in a Long Island City warehouse for over a month in a plot to ransom him for $3 million.

Now, new details on how New York City Police detectives saved Portugal are coming to light.

According to a Reuters report, NYPD detectives traced Portugal’s possible location by cross-referencing addresses associated with criminals who recently traveled to Ecuador. On May 20, detectives from the NYPD’s Major Case Squad posed as building inspectors and entered the warehouse. Portugal was found with his hands bound with cloth and duct tape and with a cap covering his eyes.

An NYPD deputy inspector told Reuters that Portugal addressed the detectives by shouting “I’ve been kidnapped!” Meanwhile, one of the suspects in the kidnapping attempted to flee through a warehouse window. The kidnapper, later identified as Christian Acuna of Queens, was caught and arrested by one of the detectives.

Portugal was reportedly beaten and had one of his hands burned with acid during his month-long ordeal. The kidnappers forced him to call his mother in Ecuador and demand $3 million in ransom money. The men now each face 25 years in prison.

  • 3 Arrests Made For $3 Million Ransom Plot

Three men on Wednesday were charged in a New York kidnapping and ransom plot.

According to a statement from Queens County District Attorney Richard Brown, the three men, Christian Acuna, Dennis Alves, and Eduardo Moncayo, have all been charged with kidnapping and unlawful iprisonment. They each face up to 25 years in prison.

The men allegedly kidnapped an Ecuadoran man named Pedro Portugal off of a Queens street on April 18. At least one of them is alleged to have posed as a police officer before Portugal was shoved into the back of an SUV and beaten as a mask was placed over his head. Portugal was then held in a Long Island City warehouse for over one month. The kidnappers also allegedly contacted Portugal’s mother in Ecuador and demanded a $3 million ransom.

“This is a terrifying story of a businessman allegedly being forcibly abducted off the streets of Queens County in broad daylight and being beaten and held against his will for more than a month while his alleged kidnappers demanded $3 million from relatives in Ecuador for his safe return,” said Brown. “In the process, the victim allegedly suffered physical injuries and has been deeply traumatized by the ordeal. The case warrants vigorous prosecution.”

An NYPD detective found Portugal in the warehouse on May 20. Portugal’s hands were reportedly bound with cloth and duct tape. Another detective was able to chase down Acuna, who fled the scene when police entered.

  • Katherine Webb Reportedly Eats Only 1,120 Calories Per Day

After sports commentators oogled her at a college football game, Katherine Webb, the current Miss Alabama, found fame on social media. Since that time, Webb’s modeling career has taken off and she has starred in the ABC reality TV show Splash. Webb quit Splash, a televised high-dive competition, last month after suffering a minor injury.

All of this success is heavily based on Webb’s good looks, which it turns out she is very disciplined about maintaining. Webb this week told People magazine that she has been “eating healthy for about six or seven years.” This means, according to People, that she eats only about 1,120 calories a day. “It’s all about self-control,” the 5 foot, 11 inch tall Webb told the magazine.

As for what those 1,120 calories consist of, Webb mentioned smoothies, salad, fruit, chicken fingers, and sweet potato fries. Not on the menu are any sweets, such as as cake and cookies, as well as any type of bread.

Though 1,120 calories may not seem exorbitantly low, Webb is also reported to work out (with a focus on cardio) at least three times per week. With that in mind, People has also quoted a nutritionist as stating Webb could easily bump her daily calories to around 1,700.

Though the People report quotes Webb, the beauty queen has now used her Twitter account to contradict the story, stating that she loves chocolate too much to eat so few calories per day:

  • Paris Hilton to Release New Hip Hop Album

Reality TV star and amateur porn star Paris Hilton has confirmed to Showbiz 411 that she will be releasing a new house music album. This will be Hilton’s second music album, after the release of her first album, Paris, in 2006.

In addition to cutting a new album, Hilton is also reportedly set to launch a new perfume and will soon be taking on tan extended role as a DJ. She will reportedly be DJ-ing this summer at a club in Ibiza, Spain. Hilton debuted her DJ skills last year at a club in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where she was reportedly heckled and booed.

The new album will be released through Cash Money Records, and will be produced by Dutch DJ Afrojack. The release date of Hilton’s album has not yet been revealed, though Cash Money Records co-founder Birdman has tweeted that it will be “soon.”

  • 15-Year Old Arrested For Two Dead Utah Brothers

The bodies of two West Point, Utah children, ages 4 and 10, were found in their home Wednesday night. According to a Davis County Sheriff’s Office statement, the brothers died from what appear to be knife wounds. The suspect in the murders is the victims’ 15-year-old brother.

The children’s mother found the the body of the 4-year-old on Wednesday evening. She called 911, and a police sweep of the home found the body of the 10-year-old. An hours-long search for the missing 15-year-old was then conducted. The boy was eventually found around midnight and taken to a local hospital.

On Thursday morning, “as a result of the emerging details,” the 15-year-old was arrested and taken to a juvenile detention center. Police suspect that the boy acted alone, but have released no further details on the crime, which they are investigating as a homicide. The cause of the 4-year-old’s and 10-year-old’s death will be officially determined by medical examiners.

  • Eva Longoria Graduates From College, Posts Pics to Twitter

Actress Eva Longoria is best-known for her roles in The Young and the Restless and Desperate Housewives, as well as for her good looks. What her fans might not know, however, is that the star has been attending graduate school at Cal State Northridge.

The 38-year-old Longoria graduated this week with a Master’s degree in Chicano Studies. She attended the graduation in full cap and gown, flaunting the costume for the paparazzi. Longoria also uploaded her own photos to Twitter, depicting her with everyone from her mother and father to her fellow classmates. She started out the day with encouraging words to those who might think about going back to school:

Big day today!!! Very excited to graduate for my Master’s degree in Chicano Studies! You’re never too old or too busy to continue your education!

  • NYC Ghetto Tours Stopped Due to Public Backlash

Earlier this month, the New York Post published a story on a New York City tour company called Real Bronx Tours. One of the tours offered by the company took tourists on a trip through the poorer areas of the city, showing them housing projects, food banks, and dangerous parks. The so-called ghetto tours have now provoked a backlash from Bronx residents.

Once word of the tour reached Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr., he and New York City Council member Melissa Mark-Viverito sent the tour company a letter, stating that they are “sickened” by the borough’s “despicable” portrayal in the tours. The letter urged Real Bronx Tours to modify the way the tour is marketed and presented. From the letter:

We are more than happy to welcome tours to our community that celebrate the rich culture and history of our neighborhoods, treat Bronx residents with dignity and encourage visits to our wonderful landmarks and beautiful parks. However, using the Bronx to sell a so-called “ghetto” experience to tourists is completely unacceptable and the highest insult to the communities we represent.

Now, Real Bronx Tours has caved to public pressure, and will no longer offer the ghetto tours. The company’s website has now disappeared, though the company has not issued a statement.

“I am happy to hear that Real Bronx Tours has decided to end its inaccurate and disrespectful tours of our beautiful borough,” said Diaz. “The Bronx has come a long way in the past few years, and we will not accept such a despicable and irresponsible depiction of our borough.”

  • Mayor Terry Buckle Rams Car Into Store

According to a report from the East Anglian Daily Times, Bury St Edmunds Mayor Terry Buckle drove his car through the front of a Tesco Express on Tuesday. The 73-year-old Buckle had only been mayor of the town for five days when the incident occurred. Bury St Edmunds is a small town located in Suffolk, England.

Buckle reportedly drove the care from a parking spot into the front door of a Tesco Express shop. Buckle was uninjured, but was taken to a nearby hospital as a precaution, and had X-rays taken of his neck. Though sore from the accident, he was then taken home to rest. No other serious injuries were reported.

Despite the nature of the accident, the damage caused was reportedly minimal. The side mirrors on Buckle’s car were damaged, and the doors and security equipment near the entrance to the Tesco were also damaged.

  • Michelle Obama to Vacation in Martha’s Vineyard With Daughters [RUMOR]

It’s been a tough month for the Obama administration. With house Republicans still attempting to turn the Benghazi attacks into a full-fledged scandal, two real scandals have popped up in recent weeks. One involves the IRS targeting new tax-exempt groups aligned politically with the Tea Party movement for extra scrutiny. The other involves the Justice Department seizing months of phone records from Associated Press reporters as part of an investigation into internal leaks. Now, the massive tornado that hit Oklahoma this week has resulted in billions of dollars worth of damage, though the death toll from the storm is not as high as previously feared.

It’s enough to make someone want to get away for a while, and that’s exactly what First Lady Michelle Obama is rumored to be doing.

According to a report in the Boston Globe, the Obamas and their daughters, Sasha and Malia, are looking to vacation this summer in Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. Michelle Obama and the girls will reportedly stay on the island for an “extended period” with the President joining them on “occasional weekends” throughout the summer, and two weeks in August.

The Globe report states that, in the past, the first family has vacationed at a farm on the island that has now been bought for almost $22 million. The Obamas are now rumored to be looking at a house in a secluded part of the island called Farm Neck as their summer vacation destination.

  • Chuck Norris Writes Ode to Tim Tebow

Actor and martial arts star Chuck Norris is, in jokes, capable of amazing feats. Counting to infinity, for example. What action movie fans might not know, however, is that Norris is a staunch conservative and a Christian.

Last fall, Norris and his wife released a video that tacitly endorsed Mitt Romney for U.S. President. In the video, he speaks of the U.S. being at a “tipping point” and quotes President Ronad Reagan, warning of “1,000 years of darkness” if America doesn’t “change direction.”

Now, Norris has penned an essay about why Tim Tebow is his favorite NFL quarterback. Writing on conservative news website WorldNetDaily, Norris recalls Tebow’s short professional career before stating he has “never seen a more determined and inspiring athlete play the game of football.” From the essay:

I’ve heard the so-called critics say Tebow has poor technical skills, but the truth is that Tim is a natural-born leader, an amazingly gifted football player, an inspiration to his team and the possessor of intense determination and strategy to bring any team to victory – no matter what the odds. One can improve technique, but leadership is innate. That is why I believe Tebow could be a super star and legend in the NFL.

Norris’ op-ed comes as Tebow is currently a free agent with no apparent prospects other than offers from arena league football teams. NFL teams such as the Miami Dolphins have not shown intrest in the quarterback, though his fans have even petitioned President Obama to intervene on his behalf.

  • Ricky Naputi: 900 lb. Man Gets New TLC Show

It’s well-known that a large number of Americans are overweight, and predictions seem to indicate that the issue will only get worse as time goes on. What isn’t as well-known is that the U.S. territory of Guam may be even worse.

This week, cable TV channel TLC aired a documentary highlighting one man’s weight difficulties on the island of Guam. Titled 900 Pound Man: The Race Against Time, the documentary chronicles Ricky Naputi’s struggle with his size, the troubles he encounters in finding help, and the difficulty he has sticking to doctors’ recommendations.

Naputi is, for the most part, bedridden and has not been able to go out of the house or shower for “years.” The documentary follows him and his wife as they seek out specialists and try to arrange for a flight to the U.S. mainland, where Naputi could receive life-saving surgery.

Though Naputi’s weight is disabling, he’s nowhere near the heaviest person ever recorded. The record for world’s heaviest man currently belongs to a U.S. man named Jon Minnoch, who weighed around 1,400 lb. at his peak. He also holds the record for weight loss, after he shed 920 lb. Minnoch died in 1983 at the age of 41 weighing nearly 800 lb.

  • Tesla: $465 Million Palin-Criticized Loan Paid Off

In 2010, the U.S. Department of Energy issued a $465 million loan to Tesla Motors, the California-based electric car manufacturer founded in 2003. The loan was a part of the Department of Energy’s Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing (ATVM) program, and was used as a political talking point last month by former conservative Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin. Palin had used the loan as an example of “crony capitalism” by the Obama administration and called Tesla a “loser,” despite the fact that the loan program had been signed into law by former Republican President George W. Bush.

Now it appears that Sarah Palin will have to eat crow, as Tesla has repaid the entire government loan nine years early.

Tesla today announced that it has paid off the loan with one final, huge payment of $451.8 million. The funds were paid out of nearly $1 billion in funding that was raised in Tesla common stock and convertible senior note offerings this month. The company now employs more than 3,000 U.S. citizens.

“When you’re talking about cutting-edge clean energy technologies, not every investment will succeed – but today’s repayment is the latest indication that the Energy Department’s portfolio of more than 30 loans is delivering big results for the American economy while costing far less than anticipated,” said U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz.

The loan repayment is yet more good news for Tesla investors. Earlier this month, the car company’s Tesla Model S car was given a 99 out of 100 score in Consumer Reports – the highest rating the publication has ever given a car.

“I would like to thank the Department of Energy and the members of Congress and their staffs that worked hard to create the ATVM program, and particularly the American taxpayer from whom these funds originate,” said Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla. “I hope we did you proud.”

  • Drone Strikes Killed 4 Americans in Last 4 Years

As drones have become more advanced, the American public has become more aware of the devices. The unmanned flying machines could soon be used by private companies (to deliver pizza, for example) and are already heavily used by the military and some U.S. police forces. With the proliferation of this new technology has come a new public scrutiny.

Today, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder confirmed that at least four U.S. citizens have been killed in military drone strikes since 2009. According to an Associated Press report, the admission was made in a letter Holder sent to Patrick Leahy, the chairman of the senate judiciary committee.

The strikes occurred in Pakistan and Yemen. One of the drone strikes was targeted to kill Anwar al-Awlaki, an American and Yemeni imam who is alleged to have been a recruiter for al-Qaeda. The three other U.S. citizens killed in drone strikes were not specifically targeted. Al-Awlaki’s son, Abdulrahman, was also killed in the attack, which occurred in Yemen in 2011. An American named Samir Khan was also killed in the drone strike that killed al-Awlaki. Another American named Jude kenan Mohammed was reportedly killed in a drone strike in Pakistan.

  • Heinrich Rohrer Dies; Physicist Was 79

Nobel Prize-winning physicist Heinrich Rohrer has died at the age of 79.

According to a New York Times obituary, Rohrer died last Thursday night or Friday morning in Wollerau, Switzerland. His family has stated that he died of natural causes.

Rohrer studied physics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology during the 1950s, where he studied superconductors. In 1963 he joined IBM, where he began working out of the company’s research laboratory in Rüschlikon, Switzerland.

In 1981 Rohrer and his colleague Gerd Binning unveiled the first-ever scanning tunneling microscope at an IBM research facility in Zürich. The technology enabled physicists to image individual atoms and other structures at the atomic level. For their discovery, Rohrer and Binning were awarded the 1986 Nobel Prize in Physics, which they shared with German physicist Ernst Ruska, who designed the first electron microscope.

The scanning tunneling microscope has since been used for the study viruses, creating silicon chips, and many other applications. Its design has also been improved upon, allowing scientists to manipulate atoms and atomic structures. In addition to a large portion of modern atomic science, things such as IBM’s recently released “World’s Smallest Movie” would not have been possible without the invention of the scanning tunneling microscope.

  • Best, Worst Airlines of 2013 Ranked by Consumer Reports

Flying can be one of the most unpleasant experiences in life. Even if passengers’ eardrums aren’t bombarded by crying babies or some woman singing Whitney Houston songs, the prices, accommodations, and service can often leave a lot to be desired.

This week, Consumer Reports has shed some light on the variations of the flying experience that can be found on different airlines. The publication has ranked U.S. airlines from best to worst in its latest issue of Consumer Reports magazine. The rankings are based on a survey of 16,000 people conducted in February. The survey included questions about comfort, baggage handling, check-in service, fees, and in-flight entertainment.

The top-ranked airlines will come as no surprise for frequent flyers. Virgin America topped the list due to its leather seat cushions and free bag checking. Jet Blue and SouthWest also placed highly for their baggage handling and service, though Jet Blue scored higher than SouthWest for cleanliness and comfort.

On the other side of the list, Spirit Airlines scored what Consumer Reports says is one of the lowest overall scores it has ever given. Though Spirit charges much lower airfare than almost any other airline, the company makes up for its low ticket prices by charging flyers for nearly everything they can. This includes fees for flight booking, carry-on bags, checked bags, in-flight snacks, and having a ticket agent print a boarding pass,

  • Massachusetts Lt. Governor Tim Murray Resigning

Massachusetts Lieutenant Governor Tim Murray today announced that he will be resigning his position in government. Murray has been the state’s lieutenant governor since 2007. Before that, he served as the Mayor of Worcester, Massachusetts.

Murray announced his resignation today in a joint press conference with Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick. Murray stated that he is leaving his position to take on the role of president and CEO of the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce.

“This unique, new opportunity will allow me to continue to work on the economic and community development initiatives and ideas that I have worked on over 15 years in elective office,” said Murray.

Murray had announced in January that he did not intend to run for governor after Patrick’s term ended. Even so, he made it clear today that he had planned to serve out his term as lieutenant governor and that he initially rejected the Worcester offer “because the timing was too immediate.” He then reconsidered, and now believes that he can build “economic growth, job creation, and community development” in Massachusetts through the private sector.

Murray has posted his statement to his Facebook page, where he is receiving mostly well-wishes for his decision:

    Tim Murray

    Dear Friends,

This post represents both an ending and a beginning.

I wanted to tell you directly about my decision to accept a new opportunity that will allow me to continue striving for the economic and community development ideals I have worked for over the past 15 years in public service. This unique new opportunity, however, means I must end my service as Lieutenant Governor of this great state.

In January, I wrote about the decision I made with my wife not to run for public office in 2014. I said at that time the next chapter of my life needed to be focused primarily on family. My wife Tammy and I are blessed with two active and beautiful daughters, Helen and Kati, who recently turned 8 and 7 years old. We wanted to take advantage of this moment in our lives, since childhood passes quickly, and this is an important time for our family.

When I made that decision, I expected to finish my term as Lieutenant Governor, working closely with Governor Patrick on the priorities we have established to help Massachusetts. Of course, I did begin to think about what the future would bring when my state service was over, however I was not pursuing any employment opportunities. Then, I was approached by the leadership of the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce with an intriguing idea.

The chamber’s long-time capable President, Dick Kennedy, is retiring and the executive committee asked if I would be interested in leading the chamber, growing its mission and economic impact. This was not a post I had sought, and at first I dismissed the idea because the timing was too immediate. Then, as I gave the matter more thought and discussed it in depth with Tammy, I became increasingly interested about the unique opportunity it presents.

So much of what we have accomplished across the Commonwealth in the past six-plus years has been through public-private partnerships. I have always said that government can’t, and shouldn’t do it all, but through strategic public investments, directed by enlightened public and private leadership, we can foster the economic growth, job creation and community development that Massachusetts deserves. In my new role as President and CEO of the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce, I will work for these same goals, on the private sector side of the equation.

The city of Worcester is the economic anchor of one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas of the country, not only Massachusetts. With nearly a million residents, 30,000 college students and a diversified economy, the greater Worcester region contributes enormously to the economic and cultural vitality of the Commonwealth and central New England. I look forward to helping the chamber, its membership, and the entire region build a brighter future.

This has been a very difficult, yet empowering decision. You and I have worked together in so many ways that have improved the quality of life in this Commonwealth. It has been an honor to serve as your Lieutenant Governor. At the same time, however, I know that change is the nature of life. And as I imagine how best to keep working on the issues that I am passionate about, while being close to home and more present in the lives of my wife and children, the chamber post is the perfect fit. So I intend to submit my resignation as Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts, effective at the end of the day on June 2, and will begin my new role as President and CEO of the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce on June 3.

As I begin to close this chapter in my career, I especially want to thank my staff, past and present, who have worked alongside me to accomplish so many substantive economic policy and development initiatives across Massachusetts. The Bay State is a special place. I have loved learning about its history, its traditions, and meeting so many great people in every corner of this state while working on their behalf.

Most importantly I want to thank Governor Patrick. He has been a friend, mentor and partner. He has led the Commonwealth of Massachusetts through some of its most tumultuous moments in modern times. Whether it was dealing with the Great Recession, the many challenges thrown at us by Mother Nature or most recently the marathon bombing, the people of Massachusetts have a captain who is steady during the storm and is leading state through to better days.

Finally, to all my friends, I will be forever grateful for the support you have shown me over the years. I know that we will stay in touch and find ways to work together on important issues and initiatives for many years to come.

    With my best regards,

    Tim

  • Hollister, A&F Clothing Stores Unfriendly to Disabled, Says Judge

Earlier this month, Abercrombie & Fitch caught heat for comments its CEO made in the past about the company’s marketing strategy. Mike Jefferies was quoted in a new book, saying that Abercrombie & Fitch markets to “cool and popular kids” and “good-looking people,” which is why its stores do not stock extra-large female clothing.

The comments sparked a backlash online that reached evening news programs and even actress Kirstie Alley. A campaign to counter Abercrombie & Fitch’s message has also begun, with activists urged to clothe the homeless in Abercrimbie & Fitch clothing.

Now, Abercrombie & Fitch is facing legal trouble over the layout of its stores. According to an Associated Press report, a federal judge in Denver, Colorado has ruled that Abercrombie & Fitch and Hollister stores are “unfriendly” to disabled persons. Abercrombie & Fitch is the parent company of Hollister. The judge is now considering an injunction against the company.

The lawsuit was filed by disabled Colorado consumers who claim to have had trouble getting into the stores through side doors and have complained that countertops in the stores are too high. The lawyer representing the disabled in the court case compared the use of side doors, rather than some type of access to the stores’ main entrance, with racial segregation. Lawyers for Abercrombie & Fitch have called this comparison “inflammatory” and have stated that the stores were constructed to standards in place at the time they were built.
