  • Even more polarizing Nissan Juke crossover revealed

Quoted price tag is between 5.5-7 lakh rupees in today’s exchange rates.

    Article from carscoop:

Arousing or polarizing; duke or puke (sorry, we just had to play with the name); refreshing or controversial; whatever the case, one thing is for sure: there’s no way the all-new Nissan Juke will go by unnoticed when it hits the road in Europe and North America this fall.
Roughly sized between a Fiesta and a Focus, the production version of the Qazana concept blends design elements from numerous cars including the Murano and Qashqai as well as from the 370Z and even the Cube with a busy face that looks like it evolved from the unforgettable Pontiac Aztec.

Despite the playful color options inside, the Juke’s interior is far less provocative from a design standpoint. The dashboard is dominated by a centre console design that is said to have been inspired by a motorcycle fuel tank, while several parts are finished in high gloss colors.

Beneath the modernized sheetmetal lies an evolution of the Renault Nissan Alliance ‘B-Platform’ that’s used on the Clio and Micra superminis.

The Juke measures 4,135mm in length, 1,765mm in width, 1,570mm in height and has a wheelbase length of 2,530mm.

In European guise, the Juke will be available with three different engines, one diesel and two petrol units.

Sitting at the top of the range is a new 1.6-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with direct injection generating 190PS and 240 Nm or 177 lb-ft of peak torque.

The second petrol engine is a newly developed version of Nissan’s naturally aspirated 1.6-liter gasoline unit that develops 117 horsepower, while the diesel range is limited to Renault’s 1.5-liter dCi with 110HP and 240Nm of torque.

In terms of transmissions, the two-wheel drive turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol engine is available with a six speed manual, while a CVT transmission with a six-speed manual mode will be available on the range-topping all-wheel drive version.

The naturally aspirated 1.6-litre petrol is available either with a 5-speed manual or the updated XTRONIC CVT and the 1.5-litre diesel engine is available with a 6-speed manual.

For the time being, only the 1.6-liter Turbo with the CVT is offered with all-wheel drive, with the rest of the range keeping the basic front-wheel drive layout.

Nissan claims that the ALL-Mode 4×4-i electronic all-wheel drive system has been enhanced with torque vectoring technology to further enhance agility and reduce understeer when cornering.

Surprisingly, on front-wheel drive versions, the Juke gets MacPherson struts at the front with a torsion beam at the back, while four-wheel drive models are equipped with a multi-link rear suspension modelled on the system found on Qashqai.

The Juke will have its world premiere at next month’s Geneva Motor Show. The European market models will be manufactured at Nissan’s UK plant in Sunderland.

  • New 2nd gen VW Toureag revealed

Today VW unveiled what it is calling the most technically innovative VW in the brandÂ’s existence. VW attributes this claim to the new range of more fuel efficient engines, as well as its lower weight and a myriad of new occupant assistance and safety systems.
The outgoing VW Touareg was often referred to as a hulking brute because of its sheer size and (some would say) excessive weight. Coupled with the outgoing modelÂ’s V10, the Touareg was everything a hulking brute of an SUV could be.

Lighter, more aerodynamic and more fuel efficient

For 2011 VW had a different vision for the off-road capable SUV – VW envisioned a more modern vehicle that made use of lighter weight, more aerodynamic and fuel efficient design. To achieve this, VW shaved 208 kilograms off of the base version, while increasing torsional rigidity by 5 percent – maintaining its spot as a class leader. To achieve the fuel economy numbers customers are demanding, VW put them gave special attention to the Cd value of the vehicle, and reduced its aerodynamic drag. VW also lowered the stance slightly, which also improves fuel economy and road handling. The final step was to make an eight-speed automatic transmission standard with all engines – a market segment first.
The base engine for the new Touareg will be a 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel resulting in 238 horsepower and 405 lb-ft of torque. Thanks to the new eight-speed automatic transmission, VW says this will achieve a very respectable 38.1 mpg on the European cycle (Imperial gallons).
Next in line is a 4.2-liter V8 TDi with a healthy 337 hp and a whopping 590 lb-ft of torque – still achieving 31 mpg on the combined cycle. This engine replaces the now discontinued V10 that previously was the range-topping engine. Although no V10, this V8 is no slouch either – reporting a zero-to-62 sprint in just six seconds flat, and capable of 155 mph computer-governed top speed.
VW will also be offering a hybrid offering that makes use of a supercharged 3.3-liter V6 that produces 329 hp, mated to a 46 hp electric motor. Peak output is 375 hp and 428 lb-ft of torque, with zero-to-62 in just 6.5 seconds while still offering 34.4 mpg. VW says this SUV will be capable of accelerating to 30 mph without any gasoline in pure EV mode.

    VW keeps off-roaders in mind

With the switch to fuel efficient eight-speed transmissions and a lower stance, off-road enthusiasts may be feeling left out. To address this concern, VW is offering a “Terrain Tech Packet” which swaps the eight-speed for a lower geared six-speed automatic mated to a 3.0-liter TDi. This model, known as the “Escape,” has a more rugged transfer case designed for off-roading, and front and rear 100 percent locking differentials known as 4XMOTION. Driver’s retain a rotary control to switch between “On-Road,” “Off-Road,” and “Low” settings depending on the terrain being conquered.

    VW press release via netcarshow.com

Volkswagen is unveiling the completely redeveloped Volkswagen Touareg as a world premiere. It is the most technically innovative "VW" since the brand has been in existence. This Volkswagen Touareg is reinterpreting the fascinating multipurpose SUV idea in a contemporary way – thanks to a range of engines that are nearly 20 percent more fuel efficient and a large variety of new assistance and safety systems. The VW Touareg will also be the first and only off-roader in Europe by a German car maker to be available in a hybrid version too. It sets standards among fully off-road capable SUVs with petrol engines that have a fuel consumption value of just 8.2 litres fuel per 100 kilometres. The Volkswagen Touareg Hybrid can be driven up to 50 km/h in purely electric mode – emissions-free. Among the diesel engines, the Volkswagen Touareg V6 TDI with 7.4 litre combined fuel consumption now posts the best value in the segment of genuine SUVs. Both versions, the VW Touareg Hybrid and V6 TDI, are the most fuel efficient petrol and diesel SUVs ever built in Europe in this large vehicle class.

New era SUV – lighter, more aerodynamic and fuel efficient
As has already been accomplished on the globally successful, smaller Tiguan, Volkswagen is systematically striving for sustainability on the new Touareg too. The first precondition was met: The SUV was lightened by 208 kilograms in the base version! A quantum leap. Yet, the body has five percent greater torsional rigidity, which makes it the leader in its competitive class. A second precondition was met as well: Designers attained a significantly improved Cd value. Along with aerodynamic refinement efforts, another factor at work here is that this Volkswagen Touareg is built lower to the ground than the previous model. Together with front end styling based on the new Volkswagen design DNA, this results in a smaller frontal area. The third precondition: All engines, now offered with a standard 8-speed automatic transmission – a first in this market segment – demonstrate significant fuel economy advantages over the previous model; in some cases the advantage is far greater than two litres per 100 kilometres.

SUV for all trails – All-wheel drive in two versions
Also modified in pursuit of reduced fuel consumption was the standard all-wheel drive. In the base version ("4Motion"), all new generation VW Touaregs have all-wheel drive with Torsen limited-slip differential (4MOTION; climbing ability: 31 degrees). Like the Tiguan Track & Field, the VW Touareg also has an "Off-road driving programme", which – at the press of a button – tunes the ABS, EDS and ASR for off-road duty, activates Hill Descent Assist and adjusts the automatic gearshift points.
Instead of a Torsen differential, the V6 TDI can be ordered with an optional "Terrain Tech Packet" that has an even more rugged transfer case designed for off-road duty. It includes reduction gearing and centre and rear differentials, each with up to 100 percent locking (4XMOTION; climbing ability: 45 degrees). Similar to the first generation Volkswagen Touareg, this version also has a rotary switch the driver now uses to adapt the car to specific duty conditions over five levels: 1. "On-Road"; 2. "Off-Road" (like "Off-road driving programme" plus automatic control of the mechanical locks); 3. Low (like "Off-road" plus activation of reduced gearing, higher shift points, no automatic upshift in manual mode); 4. Addition of centre differential lock; 5. Addition of rear differential lock. Equipped like this, the Volkswagen Touareg can conquer any terrain on Earth.

SUV for everyday driving – more space, more innovations
Volkswagen has not only made the new VW Touareg lighter, more fuel efficient and an agile performer; it has also made it into an even more versatile, all-round vehicle. The new interior was made more functional, the seats more comfortable and leg room in the rear is larger. Now the rear bench seat has 160 millimetres in longitudinal adjustment, and the backrest angle can be adjusted. Electrically unlatched at the press of a button as an option, it folds down in seconds and frees up 1,642 litres of cargo space. Already standard equipment in the base version is a radio-CD and info system, which is intuitively controlled over a 6.5-inch touch-screen.
The parking brake is now activated by pushbutton. The engine (V6 versions) automatically shuts off at traffic lights and restarts as soon as the driver releases the brake pedal (Stop-Start system). As an option, the tailgate can be opened and closed by a RF remote control unit integrated in the car key. The largest panoramic sunroof of all SUVs provides for light even on overcast days. The innovative "Area View" utilises four cameras to detect the Volkswagen Touareg’s surroundings and this enhances safety. Also offering protection are up to nine airbags. Lane Assist ensures that the vehicle does not stray from the right path; meanwhile, Side Assist warns of vehicles approaching from the rear when changing lanes. Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with integrated Front Assist can brake to a stop in an emergency and tension the seatbelts as a precautionary measure. Bi-Xenon headlights with Dynamic Light Assist perceive oncoming traffic and adjust the light beam to eliminate unwanted glare, and adaptive roll compensation ensures that the Volkswagen Touareg sits solidly on the street. For the first time, there will be special features on the new Touareg under the new "Exclusive" badge from Volkswagen Individual. Options that can be ordered include 19-inch alloy wheels ("Girona" type), fine wood inserts ("Olive Ash") and a leather interior ("Nappa") in the two-colour combinations "Dark Burgundy / Titan Black" or "Pepper Beige / Titan Black".

Volkswagen Touareg – the best of two worlds
About 500,000 car drivers chose to buy the first generation of the SUV. It is a luxury sport utility vehicle that offers a high level of comfort, sporty driving properties, avant-garde styling, excellent quality and unlimited expedition capabilities – essentially the best of the passenger car and off-road worlds unified in one concept. This is now being followed up by the new VW Touareg – a high-end and versatile all-round vehicle that brings these two worlds together even more perfectly. The Volkswagen Touareg will already be available at dealers in April 2010.

  • Porsche unveils 530 bhp 911 Turbo S

    From worldcarfans

    Press release from Porsche

Porsche 911 Turbo S: Even More Dynamic, Top Equipment all Standard
World Debut in Geneva: New Top Model in the 911 Series

Stuttgart. The engineers at Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, have developed a new top-of-the-range sports car for the customer who will only settle for the very best in terms of power, performance and driving dynamics: the 911 Turbo S.

The heart of this most exclusive high-performance athlete is of course a six-cylinder boxer boosted by two exhaust gas turbochargers with variable turbine geometry, with an increase in power over the 911 Turbo by 30 to 530 bhp (390 kW). Maximum torque is a most impressive 700 Newton-metres (516 lb-ft). At the same time this new top model comes as standard with all high-tech components available only as options on the "regular" 911 Turbo.
Despite its significant increase in power and dynamic performance, the new 911 Turbo S, at 11.4 litres/100 kilometres (equal to 24.8 mpg imp), does not consume any more fuel than the Porsche 911 Turbo, making it by far the most efficient sports car in its performance class.
The 911 Turbo S comes exclusively with seven-speed Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) (Porsche’s Double-Clutch Gearbox) conveying drive power to Porsche Traction Management (PTM) all-wheel drive. Driving safety optimised to an even higher standard is ensured by Dynamic Engine Mounts and Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) including a mechanical differential lock on the rear axle. In conjunction with Launch Control on the Sport Chrono Package Turbo likewise featured as standard, 911 Turbo S accelerates from a standstill to 100 km/h in 3.3 seconds and reaches 200 km/h in 10.8 seconds
Top speed is 315 km/h or 195 mph. Extra-light and fading-resistant Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB) provide the same outstanding performance in terms of stopping power and controlled application of the brakes.
The supreme level of standard equipment including Dynamic Bending Lights, 19-inch wheels in RS Spyder design with central locking, a three-spoke sports steering wheel with gearshift paddles, adaptive sports seats, cruise control, a CD/DVD changer and exclusive twin-tone leather upholstery in Black/Crema or Black/Titanium Blue additionally underlines the outstanding class and calibre of this first Turbo S in five years.
The new Porsche 911 Turbo S will be at the dealership as both a Coupé and Cabriolet as of May 2010. The German market price of the Turbo S Coupé is Euro 173,241 including 19 per cent value-added tax and local equipment in the market (the Euro base price is Euro 145,400). The Cabriolet retails in the German market at Euro 184.546, again including 19 per cent VAT and local equipment/specifications (base price Euro 154,900).

  • A tribute – Mahindra Scorpio

    Nothing else will do

Back in 1992, at a tender age of 7, I was watching Chamatker in a Cinema Hall at Raipur, MP (Now CG).

While I couldn’t recall the film’s name again, a song definitely became my cult favorite-Yeh Bichu mujhe kaat khayega, being shot inside a train with the then new to Bollywood Shar Rukh Khan and Urmila Matondkar.

I asked my mom-is aadmi ka naam kya hai? SRK ya phir bichu? My mom told yeh sabse khatarnak bichu hai jo ladkiyon ko Chedta hai…

    1996.

While we owned a 1994 Premier Padmini DX BU F/S (second Fiat after selling off a 1982 model), my dad, who used to look at sales at most of the army canteens (CSD-Canteen Stores Department) of Nestle India (he worked for Nestle from 1968 to 2006, before retiring gracefully at age 62) at various North Indian states like Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, and most of the time-UP and Rajasthan, had met with an accident driving a Jonga Jeep which he tried to drift somewhere in Jaipur and it toppled.

He came home, shaken but not stirred and I asked if everything was OK? He said yes. Out of a 30-day month, I only used to see him in the last 5 days because he was on tour covering all these areas and then came home, used to prepare reports etc. Those were the happiest days in my life. Those last 5 days of every month.

While the Padmini was driven very less, dad used to commute frequently to Rajasthan in a company provided Mahindra CL 550 and then an Armada, which he used to make a complete workhorse out of it by driving here, there, and at every possible road or terrain he could. And those "civilised beasts" never let him down.

Fall 1996, I decided to go with my dad to Rajasthan and since my mom declined to go with him (she preferred to stay back in Delhi) we decided to have a gala time. We had a month long Christmas vacation, and I was hitting sixes by scoring below than average marks in 6th grade, so we decided to pack bags and go in a Mahindra Armada, which was parked in front of my house. It’s colour was white, but that day it turned brown thanks to lot of off-roading 3 days before….

7 AM, morning, December mid, 1996. We leave for Rajasthan trip, and a planned desert safari in an armada 4WD and I tell my dad, "zara sambhalkar chalana." Ye ek civilised rakshas hai. Iska koi Bharosa nahi hai.

It starts, leaving a trail of noise and smoke behind to wake up my padosis.

We cruise down NH 24 in time to catch NH 8 via gurgaon on the way to Jaipur and on reaching, I am amazed to see Mahindra Jeeps here, there and everywhere. The mountain goats mesmerized me and my dad told that these are based on old gen Willys chassis, and its stretched platform is also shared with the armada.

While staying on a hotel, our jeep develops a snag and refuses to start. So we are provided with a replacement vehicle, a marshal in blue colour, much crude looking but yet, its yet another jeep, as dismissed by me that time.

What made me a big fan of mahindra jeep brand in 1997 was when we embarked upon a desert safari in a CL 550 2 door soft top jeep which we hired from the base. 4WD engaged, it simply smothered whatever terrain, sand or any kind of obstacles that came in our path. My dad drove like a professional and thankfully I was not scared. I was sitting at the back, with the soft top chopped off, enjoying the dusty weather and on returning back after 5 hours of grueling safari, my whole body was full of dust that the hotel owner suggested his son to blow air from a vacuum cleaner!!!!!

With all the dust taken off from my body, I went for an evening bath. On sleeping, I was recalling that day again and again and beginning to wonder ki yeh jeep kya cheez hai, waah bhai waah!

While my dad was off to work in Udaipur, a Nestle distributer took me to a dealership of Mahindra and there I got a glance of some of the company’s legendary jeeps-marshal, CL 550, MM 540 DP, armada, armada grand and a gleaming red classic was on display and when coming back in the evening, I asked my dad, when will we buy this classic jeep?

Dad lightly kicked my butt, and told me, pehle studies mein concentrate karo phir yeh gaadi kharidne ki baat karna mujhse. Case closed, point noted.

Cable TV was installed and in 1998 I was watching a game show, Surf Wheels of Fortune, on one of the channels, where the host Mohan Kapoor displayed a red Mahindra classic as a jackpot and even than I asked my mom to go and participate. Again, case closed…

Countless films showed Mahindra jeeps being used by police in catching the criminals and the more I saw, the more I liked it.

    Fast Forward, Sometime in 1999.

An automobile magazine, cannot recall the name, carries out the first spy shots of a new Mahindra vehicle completely camouflaged. That time Mahindra heavily advertises its new vehicles-the New Generation NG armada grand, and commander hard top in typical Dharmendra style dialogue which catch my attention, thinking that something based on these may be under testing…

But its not. It something that started as a secret project in 1996 and is unlike this company has ever done in its glorious 50 year history.

It wants to celebrate its 50 years in 2002 by launching its first all new, all indigenous "modern" product ever in history, one that promises to change the image of the company.

A new flagship, it promises to be a game changer not only for that company, but its success story will change the dynamics of the Indian automobile market for years to come.

When we decided to see the complications associated against making cars, we decided not to make a car.

We wanted to make a product that would not only be benchmarked against competition in India, but also globally.

For this, we developed a completely new team, new design process, supplier driven developmental cycle and from conceptual stage to millions of kilometeres of testing, in July 2002, just in time of our 50th year celebration, we came out with our most modern and the most technically advanced product ever.

Because we believe in doing something different.

Follow me in a series of write ups live here on team-bhp as we pay tribute to one of the biggest success stories of a nameplate that changed the perception of this company forever.

From the beginning of the idea in 1996, till the present stage in 2010, I will take you to the entire story of this modern legend.

    Because, NOTHING ELSE WILL DO.

  • India’s ultimate sleeper cars currently in production

This thread is dedicated to "sleeper cars" (can be any category) which are currently in production and sold in our country within a reasonable price band.

A sleeper is a car that has high performance and an unassuming exterior. Sleeper cars are termed such because their exterior looks little or no different from a standard or economy-class car.

In some cases the car appears worse due to seeming neglect on the owner’s part, typically referred to as "all go and no show". While appearing to be a standard or neglected car, internally they are modified to perform at higher performance levels.

    In India, my list is:

    • Hyundai Verna 1.5 CRDi
    • Skoda Laura 1.8 TSi
    • Honda Accord 3.5 V6

Any more can be listed here with a proper description.

  • Honda Jazz and City to be recalled in India and other countries-potential fire hazard

Source: BBC News – Honda recalls cars in fire danger

Honda has announced the recall of 646,000 cars globally to fix a switch defect that could cause a fire.
The recall includes Jazz models, also known as Fit in some countries, built in Japan, China, Brazil, Thailand, Malaysia and India, Honda said.
Three cases of fires due to the defect have so far been reported – two in the US and one in South Africa.
In September, two-year-old Vanilla Nurse was killed in Cape Town when the car she was sleeping in caught fire.
The total number of recalls includes 619,000 Jazz, or Fit, models globally and 27,000 City models in Asia.
In the US, 140,000 vehicles are being recalled. Just over 171,000 Jazz cars in Britain will be recalled in March.
In a statement, Honda said a defective master switch could cause water to enter the power window switch and could, in some cases, cause a fire.
On Thursday, carmaker Toyota announced the recall of vehicles in the US, Europe and China over concerns about accelerator pedals getting stuck on floor mats.

Owners kindly get in touch with Honda and its dealers and kindly update here, in case any letter is received.
Lets see if my parents’ jazz is also involved or not.

  • Undetectable starting problem in santro

I got a call from my brother that the santro is developing a starting problem, in the morning cold.

Description, as experianced by me when I went to see myself:

    • It takes about 5-6 cranks to start, and the engine makes a slight "bhut bhut" noise before it has to be forced to start.
    • when it comes to life, the motor has to be revved to get on going.
    • after that, the car runs absolutely normally and cranks at first stroke.
    • recently, the ignition coil was replaced along with new spark plug wires, yet the problem is persistent, even Hyundai service is unable to diagnose. They say to leave the car at night and they will see in the morning.
    • I have made a video and showed to them, yet of no avail.
    • I thought weather to be a problem, but our locality has 3 similar santros, all e-rlx, 2 of them have even covered more than my car and yet they do not face any problem like our car.
    • battery is perfectly fine.
    • throttle body was cleaned, yet of no avail. yesterday the motor was idling at high rpm.

What could be that hidden fault?

( I will be uploading the video in about 45 mins.)
